It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Mesut Ozil leads the field with 20% of the vote this Gameweek, having delivered two goals and nine assists in his last eight outings. In the absence of Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla, more emphasis will be on the 9.3-priced German to exert his influence during Arsenal’s home tie against Sunderland. The Gunners’ attacking unit will be emboldened in the knowledge that no team has conceded more away goals (18) than the Black Cats.

Romelu Lukaku has netted five goals in four league ties and graced the scoresheet in Everton’s midweek League Cup clash, encouraging 16% of voters to hand him the captain’s armband. The Toffees’ home tie against Crystal Palace looks favourable on paper, yet the Eagles boast the second-best defensive record away from home (five goals conceded).

City’s Kevin De Bruyne attracted an 9% backing by virtue of three goals and as many assists in his last two outings across all competitions – this afternoon’s news that Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of the trip to the Britannia will strengthen the Belgian’s appeal for some.

Notwithstanding his six consecutive blanks, Eden Hazard (8%) still finds a place in our top five. The former Lille winger turned out solid performances in his previous two league starts and now enjoys a home encounter against Bournemouth. Although the Cherries have offered more attacking threat of late, no team has surrendered more big chances (22) in road fixtures.

Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo (5%) go stride for stride in the Captain Poll. Pitted against a Swansea City defence that conceded eight goals in their last four home ties, Vardy could well extend his scoring streak to 12 matches. As for Ighalo, he’ll look to profit from a Norwich City back line that ranks top for shots inside the box conceded (85) in road fixtures. Harry Kane (4%) was unable to breach Chelsea’s resilient defence last time out but should have more joy against West Bromwich Albion, given that they chart top for home goals conceded (13).

Doubtless Philippe Coutinho – who scooped 4% of the vote – would place higher in our Captain Poll if he hadn’t been nursing a hamstring injury over the last week or so. The ex-Inter Milan starlet recorded four goals and one assist in his last three starts but looks likely to miss the Newcastle encounter, judging by Jurgen Klopp’s comments this afternoon.

If Hazard's going to start scoring it'll be these next 4 fixtures. I'll keep telling myself that until I'm convinced.

      WBA 1-0 TOT
Not buying that "WBA conceded 3 four times at home" crap. 2 of those were before Evans arrived. The other 2 were to Leicester and Everton, both in form. Pulis will keep Spurs out.

    Team for this weekend: Thoughts?

A XI ruined recently by injuries. Personally I think it's the weakest XI I've ever played, however, if Norwich manage a CS I'll be in the money.

    Ruddy

    Bellerin, Sagna, Bennet

    KDB, Ozil, Barkley, Mahrez, Stanislas

    Lukaku (c), Kane

    BENCH- Aguero, Rojo, Richards.

    1. Mr Alex
      10 years, 11 months ago

      + Butland on the bench.

          Butland vs City?

I kinda wanna take a punt on Norwich duo. If it works it will prove to be a cracking differential.

    2. Marauders
      10 years, 11 months ago

Butland. And it's Watford who keep clean sheets, not Norwich :p I'd always back Norwich to concede. Get rid of their players.
Maybe buy Moreno instead of Rojo for now.
I'd sell Aguero btw. Vardy is much MUCH better right now.

Sell sanchez for Hazard could be even better than coutinho (now 25% chance of playing)

  12. Niemi
    10 years, 11 months ago

What to I do with Aguero?

    a) Sell for a -4
    b) Bench for Gosling (che)
    c) Bench for Evans (TOT, yellow flag)
    d) Bench for Simpson (swa)

Currently on b). God I regret not getting Stanislas over Gosling on my wildcard.

Would Aguero > Martial be dumb? Thinking United have to start scoring goals and no Rooney (yes!) is the perfect start. Thoughts?

Or go with one of Sturridge/Deeney...?

Me too! I can only field 9 players this GW, lol. And that is with already doing my FT Sanchez -> Ozil. Now I need to take 2 hits just to field 11 players!!! (Aguero-> Kane, Rojo-> Toby/Dier/Rose/Zouma, not sure yet)

-4 or wild card? When else will I use it ? Open it on Christmas day?

    Cech
    Toby Bellerin Kolarov
    Mahrez Ozil KDB Barkley
    Vardy Ighalo Lukaku

First week I have struggled with captain choice
    order of preference is :
    Ighalo Ozil Lukaku KDB
    stressing on this one

  25. Marauders
    10 years, 11 months ago

I captained Ozil last time. Not getting the same feeling. Just like Wenger can't beat Pulis, he finds it tough against Big Sam. Esp with half his team (and Coquelin) out, Arsenal will be more concerned with not losing.

    I'm captaining Hazard this time.

    1. HammersFan
      10 years, 11 months ago

When Big Sam was at the hammers these were our results vs Arsenal.

      0-3, 1-3, 1-5, 1-3, 1-3, 1-2, 0-3

So thats Arsenal 7 - Big Sam 0 if you look at his time at Westham. Also lots of goals shipped in that time aswell.

      1. Marauders
        10 years, 11 months ago

Well that's a lot of facts! hahaha

I still maintain that Sunderland will get something. Arsenal don't Coquelin and Sanchez and that'll make a huge difference.
