It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Mesut Ozil leads the field with 20% of the vote this Gameweek, having delivered two goals and nine assists in his last eight outings. In the absence of Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla, more emphasis will be on the 9.3-priced German to exert his influence during Arsenal’s home tie against Sunderland. The Gunners’ attacking unit will be emboldened in the knowledge that no team has conceded more away goals (18) than the Black Cats.

Romelu Lukaku has netted five goals in four league ties and graced the scoresheet in Everton’s midweek League Cup clash, encouraging 16% of voters to hand him the captain’s armband. The Toffees’ home tie against Crystal Palace looks favourable on paper, yet the Eagles boast the second-best defensive record away from home (five goals conceded).

City’s Kevin De Bruyne attracted an 9% backing by virtue of three goals and as many assists in his last two outings across all competitions – this afternoon’s news that Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of the trip to the Britannia will strengthen the Belgian’s appeal for some.

Notwithstanding his six consecutive blanks, Eden Hazard (8%) still finds a place in our top five. The former Lille winger turned out solid performances in his previous two league starts and now enjoys a home encounter against Bournemouth. Although the Cherries have offered more attacking threat of late, no team has surrendered more big chances (22) in road fixtures.

Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo (5%) go stride for stride in the Captain Poll. Pitted against a Swansea City defence that conceded eight goals in their last four home ties, Vardy could well extend his scoring streak to 12 matches. As for Ighalo, he’ll look to profit from a Norwich City back line that ranks top for shots inside the box conceded (85) in road fixtures. Harry Kane (4%) was unable to breach Chelsea’s resilient defence last time out but should have more joy against West Bromwich Albion, given that they chart top for home goals conceded (13).

Doubtless Philippe Coutinho – who scooped 4% of the vote – would place higher in our Captain Poll if he hadn’t been nursing a hamstring injury over the last week or so. The ex-Inter Milan starlet recorded four goals and one assist in his last three starts but looks likely to miss the Newcastle encounter, judging by Jurgen Klopp’s comments this afternoon.

I think we should all have a "manager classification" next to our username. This will give the person receiving advice some context of where it is coming from - along the lines of:

(to be narrated in the voice of Sir David Attenborough...)

    Dullard

The manager often with the fewest number of transfers in their mini-league, the Dullard considers a player as a season long partnership. Like a courtship in the wild, the frigid Dullard has to be convinced of the incoming player's calibre and potential for returns. But once smitten, the Dullard remains ever loyal in the face of bandwagon whims and the fickleness of form.

Thought to have an excellent memory, wise Dullards return to the mating grounds of seasons past to re-establish fruitful relationships. Such is the bond, the more extreme Dullards have been known to nurse players in their squad long after a season ending injury.

    Sheep

The Sheep is an insecure creature. Reassured by the fantasy flock they move quickly to stay in touching distance of their mini-league neighbours. Their eye sight is limited and a mild panic can ensue if they start to become separated from the herd. The mass migration of Sheep is one of the wonders of the world; starting the week as a slow trickle, once word gets out of a new bandwagon, Sheep can gather in numbers and show a surprising turn of speed.

Due to their vast numbers, the weak and slow to respond fall to the back of the herd and are often left with slim pickings. Tragically, some Sheep find the bandwagon at its most bare and must face up to enduring the rest of the season having discarded valuable points.

    Punter

The Punter is the lone wolf of the fantasy world. Feeding little and often, Punters must learn quickly to find their next source of points. Curiously, success has come when these creatures work co-operatively in small packs. Perched high on vantage points, they scan the season ticker for juicy pickings often willing to chase difficult prey in the hope of a bonanza.

You're likely to hear a Punter before you see one. Following a successful excursion, boisterous Punters will crow about how they were the first to identify the bandwagon. Paradoxically, at the first sign of Sheep they will vacate their windfall in search for the next one.

This is a dangerous time for a Punter. An ill-timed move can have far reaching consequences on the player's season. Immature Punters have been known to wander aimlessly, their confidence shattered, a shadow of their former selves.

I was considering taking a 4 point hit get Lukaka or Kane in to replace Ageuro.

My bench consists of Drinkwater, Evans and Francis.

    Stupid move?

If not, who to go for out of Kane and Lukaku?

Kompany, Rooney, Coutinho, Yaya, Sanchez, Shaw, Wilson...and on and on...All high ownership and all blowing a hole in 23,000 teams.

The more I look at it, the more I like it.

    2FT

    Rojo > Toby A
    Sanchez > Silva
    Ihhalo > Sturridge

    -4

    Butland
    Azpi, Toby, Sagna
    KDB, Mahrez, Silva, Ozil
    Lukaku, Vardy, Sturridge

      Mané

      - Scored a hattrick last year on the same fixture.
      - Seems to be coming back into form (assist v MCI and scored v LIV).
      - AVL are even worse than last year.
      - AVL have no choice but to attack leaving them open.
      - SOU will make up for their 6 - 1 loss v LIV in C1C

    A) Do we really expect Sturridge to start this weekend or a bench appearance? Latter seems likely to me.

Realistically the -4 hit will mean either Aguero has to go, or Westwood. Don't wanna get rid of Aguero, but trading Westwood with 0.4 ITB means I can only get a Bournemouth cheapo (who are playing Chelsea). That's my issue.

    Right defensive benching problems...

Bench VvD, Moreno, Bellerin or Rose?

    I'm leaning towards rose myself

Would you start Coutinho or just get Cedric off the bench against Villa (H)?

    Hi.
Got Alderweireld and Coutinho(at a -4) at the start of the week once Sanchez was injured, and now Coutinho might not play, his midfield backup being Wanyama.

    Current team:
    Myhill
    Stones Bellerin Alderweireld
Barkley KdB Mahrez Coutinho(probably won't play so will get subbed)
    Vardy Giroud Lukaku

    Subs: Nyom, Wanyama, Wollschied

On a -4 right now and the Coutinho looks like a waste this week 🙁 (Damn you Klopp ;-;)

Stick with the team or take another hit? Subs don't look like they can get any more than 2 points.
Or hope Wanyama does well and move him ahead of Nyom?

    Thanks

Sturridge is 50/50, you may as well go for Giroud or Kane
