It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Fresh from his best score (14 points) of the campaign so far, Mesut Ozil boasts a commanding lead (47%) at the summit of the Captain Poll ahead of Arsenal’s home tie against Newcastle United. Aside from a blank against Southampton in Gameweek 18, the Germany international hasn’t failed to produce attacking returns since Gameweek 6, recording six 10+-point hauls in the process. The fact that the Magpies have already suffered two heavy defeats on the road this term (Man City: 6-1; Palace: 5-1) ensures that Olivier Giroud (4%) and Theo Walcott (2%) also place among the top 10 captaincy favourites.

Riyad Mahrez (20%) claims second spot by a clear margin prior to Leicester City’s home encounter against Bournemouth. The Algerian drew blanks against Man City and Liverpool in recent weeks but demonstrated his capacity for explosive returns with six goals in three starts from Gameweek 15. Similarly, Jamie Vardy (4%) hasn’t scored in three but will fancy his chances against a Cherries defence that’s carded just two shut-outs since Gameweek 7.

Sergio Aguero hasn’t lasted beyond the 65-minute mark since his return from injury, but his unrivalled ability to deliver huge Fantasy returns earns him a 4% backing. Although the Sky Blues are matched up against a Watford outfit that conceded just two goals in their previous trio of home clashes, Aguero’s 13% ownership will reason that fixture difficulty is extraneous if their man can discover his groove.

Harry Kane (4%) sits just outside the top five as Tottenham Hotspur prepare for a trip to Everton. The Toffees will doubtless cause Spurs a myriad of problems on the offensive end, but their defence has proved their undoing of late, shipping seven goals in two home match-ups. Furthermore, Roberto Martinez’s men lay claim to just two clean sheets in the last 14 Gameweeks, bolstering Kane’s Fantasy prospects.

Everton will hope that Romelu Lukaku (3%) emerges victorious as two of the league’s form marksmen duel at Goodison Park. The 9.3-priced frontman racked up 10 goals in nine starts but faces off against a Spurs side that ranks bottom for goals conceded (15) and secured two shut-outs in their previous trio of league ties.

Marko Arnautovic and Christian Benteke have been tipped by 2% of FFScout’s readership. The former tallied four goals and one assist in his last five starts, rendering him an enticing route into Stoke City’s effervescent attack ahead of a trip to West Bromwich Albion. The latter has netted in consecutive starts and locks horns with a West Ham team that’s registered just two clean sheets on home turf.

    Beware of Stoke

Just a word of warning, Stoke have 5 away fixtures (possibly 6 and a replay) over the next month. Along with Liverpool, Man City and Everton they are one of four teams that can end up playing a maximum of 9 games over the month of January.

We can expect to see a lot of rotation, especially surrounding Marko Arnautovic given Hughes recent comments.
    http://www.stokecityfc.com/news/article/hughes-inclined-to-make-changes-2876498.aspx
The big question remains; how effective will Stoke's attack be if rotation is in full effect? Will tired legs begin to show at the front and back?

Saturday 2nd Jan: West Brom v Stoke
Tuesday 5th Jan: Liverpool v Stoke
    Saturday 9th Jan: Doncaster v Stoke **
Wednesday 13th Jan: Stoke v Norwich
Sunday 17th Jan: Stoke v Arsenal
Saturday 23rd Jan: Leicester v Stoke
Tuesday 26th Jan: Stoke v Liverpool
Sunday 31st Jan: FA Cup 4th Round (if they beat Doncaster)
Tuesday 2nd Feb: Man United v Stoke

** If a draw this might be rescheduled for Wed 20th Jan, between the Arsenal and Leicester games

Don't have any stats to back this up apart from actually just watching the games but I think Liverpool are a lot more defensively solid without Skittle in the team. He seems to get a lot of praise but I really don't rate him as a defender. We need more of a leader and someone who can command the area better. Sakho is a best and is getting better. Hopefully we sign someone to pair him with who is better than Skittle and Lovren but I actually think Lovren/Sakho are a better pairing than one of them and Skittle.

I don't agree, I think his passing is very good and he doesn't panic the way Skrtel and Lovern do. He just looks so awkward the way he kicks the ball, I think it's the way his legs move or something!

I used to think Sakho is very good. But watching him last 2 weeks, he has been the worst in that defence. Worse even than Lovren and that takes some doing. He might regain his form but the last few matches he has been horrible on the ball. His passing is almost non-existent.

you claimed he had a bad game so I don't get why it matters who the opposition is. you said last 2 weeks he has been the worst in the defence, a defence that kept 2/2 clean sheets, one at home to top of the table and a team that had failed to score in a game yet and one away to a team struggling for relegation in desperate need of points.

There is a lot to the game apart from goals and Sturridge is better at every aspect. Ali Dia gives an excellent example of RVP. If there is a chance , why not try?

Its not his fault that he keeps on getting injured. Even he admits his body is finished but you have to admit Sturridge is class and if there is even a small chance of him returning to full fitness , he will be a big asset for Liverpool. We can sit here and laugh/criticize Daniel all we want but is it really his fault?

See above. Ighalo or somebody else would also be a big asset for them Liverpool have fallen into a mindset trap....Just because Sturridge is a good player when he's fit it doesn't mean everybody else isn't....

He's a waste of a wage and a squad place most of the time.

Its just the possibility of him making a come back makes me strongly disagree with you. The market is short on top class strikers and I am sure United/Arsenal will play millions for a fit Sturridge. In today's day and world , medical science has come a long way and even if there is a remote chance to bring back the 100% fit Sturridge , I would keep hold of him.

Personally , I would love to have Sturridge at Chelsea

            Let's play a game.

Let's imagine you are Klopp and your football career at Liverpool relies upon your players and their ability to play and play well. You can't make excuses to the board, you have to deliver CL football at least and better still a title challenge.

So it's down to you...Do you keep Sturridge ?...or do you look elsewhere?

I know what I'd be doing.

I would keep Sturridge. Why? His market value is very low atm. No point in selling to buy another. What I would do is buy another striker WISELY . Not Benteke , who does not suit Liverpool . Maybe try Firmino permanently as striker or target someone like Ighalo/Vardy

    Arnautovic has West Brom away.
Pulis has an awesome record against former clubs.
Do we still think Arnautovic will do well?

Stoke have got 2 massive results, do but do we think it's likely to continue?

Oh yeah, just saw you're post. Makes me sceptical to bring him in...but who else for Coutinho, who has frustrated me to death.

Ramsey? Wally? Payet (and bench him) Mane?

What would you do with this team considering I have 2 FT (and 1.4m in the bank):

          Butland - McCarthy
          Bellerín - Dawson - Moreno - VvD - Ward
          Ramsey - Özil - KdB - Mahrez - Coutinho
          Vardy - Lukaku - Kane

I am considering just going Coutinho --> Stanislas to get a decent and cheap 5th midfielder, and to get more cash now that Sánchez is on his way back, and to also be able to get Agüero in after the cup-matches.

          Thoughts?

          Butland
          Bellerin, Moreno, Evans
Özil (c), Mahrez, DeBruyne, Walcott (vc)
          Lukaku, Ighalo, Aguero

          McCarthy, Stanislas, Simpson, Ward.

            Benching Simpson?

Bournemouth's away form isn't great and Leicester have tightened up, I think West Ham will score v Liverpool with all of their players coming back

It's a marginal call that one for me.

Moreno gives me a lot more creativity and threat.

I'm not sure how tight Leicester really are tbh I think in terms of cs the chances are roughly the same with Moreno shading it for attacking points potential.
