It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Fresh from his best score (14 points) of the campaign so far, Mesut Ozil boasts a commanding lead (47%) at the summit of the Captain Poll ahead of Arsenal’s home tie against Newcastle United. Aside from a blank against Southampton in Gameweek 18, the Germany international hasn’t failed to produce attacking returns since Gameweek 6, recording six 10+-point hauls in the process. The fact that the Magpies have already suffered two heavy defeats on the road this term (Man City: 6-1; Palace: 5-1) ensures that Olivier Giroud (4%) and Theo Walcott (2%) also place among the top 10 captaincy favourites.

Riyad Mahrez (20%) claims second spot by a clear margin prior to Leicester City’s home encounter against Bournemouth. The Algerian drew blanks against Man City and Liverpool in recent weeks but demonstrated his capacity for explosive returns with six goals in three starts from Gameweek 15. Similarly, Jamie Vardy (4%) hasn’t scored in three but will fancy his chances against a Cherries defence that’s carded just two shut-outs since Gameweek 7.

Sergio Aguero hasn’t lasted beyond the 65-minute mark since his return from injury, but his unrivalled ability to deliver huge Fantasy returns earns him a 4% backing. Although the Sky Blues are matched up against a Watford outfit that conceded just two goals in their previous trio of home clashes, Aguero’s 13% ownership will reason that fixture difficulty is extraneous if their man can discover his groove.

Harry Kane (4%) sits just outside the top five as Tottenham Hotspur prepare for a trip to Everton. The Toffees will doubtless cause Spurs a myriad of problems on the offensive end, but their defence has proved their undoing of late, shipping seven goals in two home match-ups. Furthermore, Roberto Martinez’s men lay claim to just two clean sheets in the last 14 Gameweeks, bolstering Kane’s Fantasy prospects.

Everton will hope that Romelu Lukaku (3%) emerges victorious as two of the league’s form marksmen duel at Goodison Park. The 9.3-priced frontman racked up 10 goals in nine starts but faces off against a Spurs side that ranks bottom for goals conceded (15) and secured two shut-outs in their previous trio of league ties.

Marko Arnautovic and Christian Benteke have been tipped by 2% of FFScout’s readership. The former tallied four goals and one assist in his last five starts, rendering him an enticing route into Stoke City’s effervescent attack ahead of a trip to West Bromwich Albion. The latter has netted in consecutive starts and locks horns with a West Ham team that’s registered just two clean sheets on home turf.

    Start 3:

    Dier (eve)

    Moreno (whu)
    Soaure (CHE)

Probably need to fix my defence this week, could be hit hard by rotation. A little stumped as to options this week though - nothing really obvious. Would appreciate some suggestions?

    DDG (Rudd)
    Kolarov Bellerin Dawson (Coloccini Naughton*)
    Ozil Silva Walcott Mahrez (Surman)
    Lukaku Kane Vardy

    2.6m banked.

I do too. Looking for a small differential in defence...alot above me in ML have Moreno. Might just get him in any case...thought I could start shedding some budget from defence though. Lost enough on Naughton already. Naughton > Simpson was an option I considered but would leave me pretty light in def.

Good point. Only nine forwards have 6+ in the first half of the season, but several more have 5. Could end up on 20-21 pretty easily, but I am not confident that he can do much more for a whole season.

He has the 3rd most transfers out this week for a forward, but also the 4th most transfers in, and the transfers in exceed the transfers the transfers out.

Perhaps someone is trying to confuse the system by messing about with multiple transfers on their wildcard.

    Best plan for Jan

    - Look at the fixtures ahead; how many fixtures do the clubs in your FPL team have coming up?
    - Look at your players; are they important to their team, are they relatively safe to start in the league?
    - Look at the form; is there some sort of form in the players/ club you have in your FPL team?

I think with all of these fixtures coming up, having safe players (not necessarily punts) will benefit us most. Makes picking a captain a lot easier too.

Not this week. Arnautovic is a doubt because of the Cip semi-final on Tuesday and his tight hamstrings. He may well start on the weekend but do not be surprised if he is rested.

Give me a compelling argument not to captain Mahrez over Ozil?

I'm fairly template so a considered third option gratefully accepted...

de Bruyne, Özil, Ramsey, Mahrez / Gosling
    Lukaku, Kane, Aguero

    1 FT, 0.0 ITB

KDB for bench this week? Since it's an away game and he rarely delivers in away games

If they want to change this trend they'll need to play their best creative players imo

I don't think he's bad in away games, he scored in his first. City are just poor away from home. He could have easy got 2 assists in the last match if not for Kun missing from a yard or so and keeper making a good save from a corner.

But I can't find a way to put him in the XI

        Butland
        Moreno, Bellerin, Ward
        Alli, Mahrez, Ozil, Barkley
        Kane, Vardy, Lukaku

        Subs: DDG, Toby, Wolls, KDB

Ozil and Mahrez are definitely starting, it's either Barkley or Alli who are both risky to drop

    DDG
    Monreal, Moreno, Wollschied
    Mahrez, KDB, Arnautovic, Barkley
    Aguero, Ighalo, Lukaku

    Butland, Dier, Williams, Alli

    G2g?

Reason for NOT having Ozil, is that everyone else in the mini league
    have him.
