Sergio Aguero’s return to form has Fantasy managers scrambling for his services. Riyad Mahrez’ spot-kick duties could be in question, Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum delivers at home once again, whilst a quartet of left-backs are all jostling for our attention in our lunchtime assessment of the weekend’s action.

Aguero’s chilling reminder is just a warning…
Neck and neck with Harry Kane in last week’s Captain Poll, the City striker served a timely reminder that you get what you pay for by racking up a 16-point haul at home to Palace. Whilst Kane still managed a healthy 10 points at home to Sunderland, those who placed the armband on Aguero were rewarded emphatically as he delivered two goals, an assist and the maximum bonus against the Eagles. Eased back into action by Manuel Pellegrini, Aguero finally looks back to full match sharpness and his weekend showing has already seen his price jump to 13.3, with over three times the number of new owners than any other forward as the bandwagon picks up momentum.

….as is Pellegrini’s decision to rest Toure….
City’s hectic schedule continues to have a significant effect on Pellegrini’s team sheet. With the club still battling for silverware on four fronts, the Chilean’s decision to rest Yaya Toure to the bench raised a few eyebrows, given that the Ivorian – who had netted in three of his previous five appearances – has mainly been rotation-proof during his tenure. In midweek, Aleksandar Kolarov dropped to the bench and this time round it was Bacary Sagna’s turn, as Pellegrini looks to utilise the depth of his squad over a tricky winter period.

Mahrez may have taken his last spot-kick…
A 1-1 draw at Villa dented the Foxes’ claim for a top-four finish, with just two goals scored in the last five Gameweeks highlighting their stuttering attack. Riyad Mahrez’ owners were again left frustrated after the Algerian fluffed his lines from the spot for the second time in three league matches, having also missed a penalty in a goalless home draw with Bournemouth. Claudio Ranieri has admitted he’s set to hold talks with the winger over his penalty duties and with Jamie Vardy having scored all three of his top-flight spot-kicks this season, the latter’s owners will be hoping he’s handed the next opportunity as he looks to improve a record that’s seen him score just once in the last eight Gameweeks.

Hennessey is on the brink…
Culpable for Villa’s midweek winner, the Welshman was again at fault on Saturday after allowing Fabian Delph’s long-range attempt to open the scoring in Palace’s Etihad hammering. Alan Pardew has been quick to criticise Hennessey but went on to suggest that, for now at least, the Welshman is still his number one. Another costly error over the next few fixtures, though, and the 4.1-priced stopper could be on bench-warming duties, depriving Fantasy managers of a cut-price option between the sticks.

…and Myhill is teetering too…
It’s a single clean sheet in 12 Gameweeks now for the Baggies, as they continue to look uncharacteristically porous under Tony Pulis. A 3-0 loss at St Mary’s continued a series of dire defensive displays that will surely have the West Brom boss reconsidering his options sometime soon. Myhill has played from start to finish in every league outing so far but with Ben Foster now fit and pushing for a return, it looks only a matter of time before last season’s number one is handed his chance between the posts.

Baines has blinked on the radar at the right time…
With his season curtailed by injury until last month, the Everton left-back has been far from Fantasy managers’ thoughts. Baines’ pair of assists at Stamford Bridge – allied with two clean sheets in his last four appearances – arrives at a time where the schedule smiles very kindly for the Toffees. Roberto Martinez’ men now have three very favourable home fixtures in four (SWA, NEW, WBA) and with a double Gameweek potentially on the horizon, depending on Capital One Cup results, the 3%-owned Baines is shaping up to be the handiest of differentials for the remainder of the campaign.

Daniels is a Cherry worth picking…
Bournemouth’s penalty-taking left-back staked a major claim for our consideration last weekend, courtesy of an 18-point home haul against Norwich. Daniels has now racked up two converted spot-kicks, an assist and three clean sheets in the last six Gameweeks alone, yet despite his budget-friendly price tag of 4.5, still remains in just 1% of FPL sides. With clashes against Sunderland, Palace, Stoke and Watford in the next five, though, the Daniels bandwagon is picking up pace: he leads the way for transfers in amongst defenders since the weekend, with over 23,000 FPL managers acquiring his services.

Targett could yet be a handy enabler…
Drafted in from the cold last midweek, the Southampton defender has more than vindicated Ronald Koeman’s decision to hand him a recall by serving up an assist in each of his subsequent two appearances. Now down to a mere 3.7 in FPL, Targett’s potential has been helped by an out-of-position berth – with Ryan Bertrand stationed at centre-half, the youngster has been utilised as a left wing-back in the Saints’ new 3-5-2 system. After serving up 12 and 11 points over those two fixtures, his performances have certainly strengthened his chances of retaining that starting berth under Koeman, thus handing us a very handy option for our five-man defences.

Van Aanholt has us considering a Sunderland defender…
The Dutchman delivered the attacking points once more last weekend and emerged from White Hart Lane with his Fantasy reputation enhanced, despite a 4-1 drubbing. Van Aanholt’s early strike against Mauricio Pochettino’s troops means he has now scored in three successive league outings, with an assist also thrown in during the midweek win over Swansea. Having served up just seven points in the opening ten Gameweeks, the 4.6-priced Van Aanholt has averaged five points per appearance under Big Sam – that’s despite earning just two clean sheets in his 11 outings with the new man in charge.

We need Wijnaldum for Gameweek 25…
Yet again, the Newcastle midfielder plundered the points in front of his own fans with a goal and assist in the weekend win over West Ham. Wijnaldum has now netted nine home goals – at least four more than any other midfielder – and has proven the man for the big occasion, with strikes against the likes of Southampton, Chelsea, Liverpool and United at St James’. Whilst back-to-back road trips may curtail his appeal – given he’s yet to score on the road – many will be pencilling him in for Gameweek 25, as Steven McClaren’s side welcome West Brom to Tyneside. Elsewhere for the Magpies, Aleksandar Mitrovic failed to get amongst the goals, yet the underlying stats suggest the Serbian remains one to watch. Although he’s scored just once over the last six Gameweeks, the summer signing has produced more shots inside the box (20) than any other player and looks equally crucial to their survival bid.

    Butland / Hennessey
    Ward / Simpson / Alderweireld / Bellerin / Moreno
    Payet / KDB / Ozil / Alli / Mahrez
    Kane / Lukaku / Aguero

    2 FT 0.1 ITB

    A) Ward --> Daniels
    B) Ward --> Olsson and Bellerin --> Baines
    C) Any other defensive transfer options

Have almost the exact same team so interested in the answers! Only difference is that I have McCarthy rather than Hennessey so kind of hoping he will be dropped.....sorry.

Ward and Simpson rotate nicely make great backups, but potentially Ward to Daniels could be worth doing. I would keep Aldy and Bellerin as they are good options. Moreno is a worry but with a potential DGW and good games coming up I am not sure on dropping him. Bellerin to Baines is a flair move but don't think Everton defense or Baines himself is really worth the money.

Attack is great so nothing to change there for the time being. May want to get some funds ready for moving KDB to Sanchez though.

      1. MaxiRobriguez
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 16 days ago

I've done Ward to Daniels already in expectation of his price going up later tonight.

        Reasoning was:
        1) I got Hennessey in net if I really do want to play a Palace defender.
        2) Palace/Stoke rotate well so playing Hennessey will probably be at home so won't mind dropping Butland as much
        3) I won't ever double up with Palace because they're conceding goals.
        4) Daniels fixtures are nicer.
        5) Daniels on Pens.

Easy choice. Deference is Butland, Hennessey, Toby, Moreno, Evans, Simpson and now Daniels. Didn't edge out Moreno despite him being useless because of potential DGW. Kept Evans for now cos of fixtures but will probably move him to Targett if needed to free up funds for potential Sanchez move. Even then if Targett gets dropped I got 4 playing defenders across 4 different teams, all of which are different teams to my keepers too.

Ward -> Daniels was an obvious one for me.

Was thinking exactly this myself. Giroud most likely won't change as his net transfers seem to be around 0. Lukaku however may drop again so I would wait until Saturday morning to see if you can get him 0.1 cheaper. Boggles my mind to see people shipping Lukaku, his next games are SWA NEW sto WBA liv AVL whu and SUN. Also there is the (albeit smalll) possibilty of Giroud getting rotated when Sanchez returns.

Is there anyway you can have both on 1 team? After the ighalo plays newcastle im shipping Jim out for Giroud so I Hve Lukaku Giroud and agüero one one team. Giroud is an amazing differential for someone who scores basically every 2 games. It's only cos he misses so much, were put off by it. I'd make the move but expect Giroud to get returns when U ship him. But I can't argue with the lukaku move but it's risky in terms of that U might miss out on if u let Giroud go but lukaku is in line for returns too so it's 50/50. For immediate success, make the move. Long term, keep Giroud

Faced with another benching dilemma this week. One to bench:

    A) Alli (Cry)
    B) Ozil (CHE)
    C) Payet (MCI)
    D) Mahrez (STO)
    E) KDB (Whu)

Hahaha it's another really tough one, once again I can see reasons to bench any of them. Benched Ozil this week and got away with it, none of them really in sparkling form but all capable of big hauls.

i ended up benching lukaku. fat lot of good that did me when ozil was ruled out...

We have the same midfield and this decision will drive me nuts all week

A seems obvious (more so because of the pricetag) but I can't see many goals in the ARS-CHE game or in the LEI-STK game leading me to believe that B or D will score the lowest this week

Only 2 I would play 100% is Alli as Palace are in a slide, and Payet as City concede without kompany. Hammers play well against top teams.

          Ozil coming back from injury,
Mahrez off form against tough Stoke D
          Kdb playing away

One of those 3 to bench tbh

Alli and Payet have to play

Alli is better away and has convincing stats - so he should play
Payet at home to Kompany less City defence which almost conceded twice in the beginning of the game against CPL West Ham is a real threat from set play.

Mahrez - we have to monitor the situation as he play replay against TOT i midweek (if he plays I would bench him against Stoke ) unless he finds him mojo 🙂 and scores a brace.
          Ozil - should be fine

so my choice is between KDB who play really bad away or Mahrez

Howe is big on Full Backs getting forward, you expect more assists from full backs than penalties, with that in mind Francis at 4.2m is good value, just unfortunate, he was playing CB when Bournemouth has defensive issues, or we'd have seen more attacking points from him.

He is very frustrating to own. Gets attacking returns like no one else when he's playing, but rotates with Davies all the time. But it could be interesting to see who (if any) nails down the spot now that the fixtures clear up.

The Alli v Mahrez debate is interesting for the next 6 games.

        Alli:
        -better fixtures
        -better form
        -more clean sheet points

        Mahrez:
        - higher points potential.
        - plays for a team that score more goals

I might stick with Mahrez due to him being undroppable up until now. Never thought I'd be in this situation after his early season form. Talk of Leicester losing steam is a bit premature for me as they are still joint top and are just having a slight blip, like Arsenal. The plan was to make life easier for myself by getting Payet in for Mahrez, but that seems too much of a sideways move and I would rather get rid of Barkley for Payet once I know whether he has a DGW.

SHOULD. When looking at their fixtures I have my doubts

Spurs scored 4 in their last game

          Leicester have scored 2 in 5 🙂

I assume that Mahrez will lose penalties to Vardy now?

I'm really tempted to drop him for Alli too, but his ownership is still so high it'll cost big if he gets a haul. Probably will hold Mahrez for the next GW or two to see if he can get his mojo back and go from there.

But if he continues to blank while Alli collects points then you can gain an advantage of all the people to afraid to drop Mahrez 😉

It's all hypothetical at this stage. Noone has much clue over who will score more points over the next 6. Both could explode but you have to drop a mid.

Have enough to do Lukaku and Kolarov to Aguero and a 5.8 defender, was thinking (2 FT):

        A. Stones
        B. VVD
        C. Moreno
        D. Another?

Other defenders are Morgan, Toby, Bellerin and Delaney.

Which 3 defenders to play from:

        Evans (AVL)
        Daniels (sun)
        Dier (cry)
        Simpson (STK)

Which would you do? Both for free

        A Hennessey->Elliot
        B Dann + G Johnson > Baines + Ward

Thinking A this week then B next if Everton or Pool make the cup final

Wc team attempt 2. Pretty happy, thoughts?

        Butland Elliot
        Alderweireld Baines PvA Simpson Targett
        Sanchez Firmino Payet Wijnaldum Alli
        Aguero Lukaku Rooney

Good mix of cover over the top teams. Reason being I dilike doubling up on city/Arsenal for the times when they blank. Sad to lose kane but prefer Lukaku for fixtures and Rooney as something a bit different!

Wouldn't get Wijn and Firmino but thats just me.

          Defence looks bit dodgy.

Yea I can see why although Wij is great at home, Firmino is a bit of a strange one, depends if he can hold down that false 9 position or if Benteke will come back in.

Lack of other mid options though, dont really want to double up on Arsenal. Kun is all I want for city as to much rotation in the mids.

Barkley, Arnie, yaya, mata, mane, willian, ayew....not a fan of any of these personally.

Also defence, With cleanies so hard to predict. Gone for more attacking players in Baines and PvA. Simpson has been a handy 4th all season. Targett frees up cash and if hes rotated no big deal.

He will be rotated, as will Rose. Toby, Vert or Dier your best bets for Spurs defensive cover.

Gents - some help on my defence appreciated. Got 2FTs but think I'll let one roll over

        Currently got:

        Lloris - Hennesey
        Kolarov - Bellerin - Bertrand - Nyom - Wollsheid

        Kolarov out for

        A. Baines
        B. Jags (and save some cash)
        C. Daniels

Not convinced by Aguero away to West Ham this week. Not convinced by Kane either. Usually not a big fan but am looking at a one week punt to replace Kane then shift for Kun gw24 for their Sunderland clash. On my radar is Rooney, Mitrovic and Giroud.

        Any thought? Better suggestions?

I have both right now but if I didn't I'd go Aguero. He's worth it. Giroud is a good alternative too
