We make our way to the Weekly Shop this Wednesday evening, as we assess the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our own weekly squads.

As always, the player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re once again scanning the player lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

Manchester United picked up an eleventh clean sheet of the campaign at Anfield, maintaining the best defensive record in the division. David de Gea (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.1m) made four saves and picked up two bonus points against the Reds and now welcomes Southampton to Old Trafford this weekend. United have conceded just four times in 10 matches in front of their own fans, whilst for all their recent improvement, the Saints continue to toil on their travels and have scored just twice in the previous four away matches.

Everton’s 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge exhibited both their strengths and weaknesses last weekend. Only City have scored more goals this term, though on the other hand, the Toffees record of 32 goals against is better than just six other sides. Given that weekend visitors Swansea have scored just twice in their last five road trips, though, Roberto Martinez’ men will be optimistic of a third clean sheet in six. Leighton Baines (FantasyBet 6m, Premier Punt 6.5m) offers a relatively cut-price route into the defence and served up two assists against the Blues, reminding us of past glories and his ability to produce returns at both ends of the pitch.

Given that the Swans have kept just a single clean sheet away from the Liberty, Everton’s attacking assets are also worth considering. Ross Barkley (FantasyBet 7m, Premier Punt 10.4m) has been quiet in recent weeks but has already notched six goals and eight assists and is a viable midfield option, having recorded nine attempts over the last four league matches. Striker Romelu Lukaku (FantasyBet 9m, Premier Punt 12.3m) is also likely to be a hugely popular pick this week, having scored or assisted in each of his last six home appearances.

After a lay-off with injury, Roberto Firmino (FantasyBet 8m, Premier Punt 10.6m Forward) has featured more regularly for Liverpool and had growing influence over the last 12 Gameweeks. The increased pitch time has seen the Brazilian record a 50% involvement in the Reds’ goals over that period, picking up three goals and four assists, including double-figure hauls against Man City and Arsenal. Up against a Norwich with three clean sheets to their name all season, Firmino looks the man most likely for the Merseysiders.

Poundstretchers

Watford’s home encounter with Newcastle offers the Hornets a chance to bounce back after chalking up a fourth straight loss at Swansea last Monday evening. Quique Sanchez Flores’ men have kept six clean sheets in ten in front of their own fans and with the Magpies drawing blanks in their last two away matches, Heurelho Gomes (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 6.9m) looks an ideal option between the sticks. The Brazilian remains third on points in the overall goalkeeper leaderboard and with new arrival Costel Pantilimon waiting in the wings, should be eager to put in a performance here.

We’re also backing Watford’s budget frontman Odion Ighalo (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.1m) to end a three-match goal drought this weekend.. The Nigerian had netted nine times in as many matches prior to that run of blanks and Newcastle roll up having shipped 21 goals in their last ten away fixtures, conceding two or more in five of those ties.

Sam Allardyce’s pragmatic approach appears to have given Sunderland a fighting chance of survival – two wins and eight goals scored over the last three indicates a revival of fortunes on Wearside. Patrick Van Aanholt (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 7.6m) has been the unlikely source of three of those goals and even served up an assist against Swansea. The in-form left-back now welcomes a Bournemouth side that have drawn blanks in each of their last two on the road.

Jermaine Defoe (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 8.3m) has also been in fine form. The veteran striker netted five times in the two recent victories including a hat-trick against Swansea and could deliver great value against the Cherries.

If you’re looking for a cheap enabler in midfield this week, Jesse Lingard (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 5m) could help to fill a spot and provide funds to spend elsewhere. The Manchester United youngster is a bit of a risky pick, but, having started the last two and scored against Newcastle, the midfielder could be utilised once again for the visit of Southampton.

West Brom’s Craig Dawson (FantasyBet 5.0m, Premier Punt 7.6m) is another to consider. The right-back welcomes midlands rivals Villa to the Hawthorns and, as well as scoring twice this term, provided the assist for Salomon Rondon’s FA Cup winner over Bristol City last night. Remi Garde’s side have scored just three times in their last five road trips, suggesting a clean sheet could be on the cards for Tony Pulis’ defensive regulars.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into this week’s fixtures. I’ll bring you up to date on my progress in our partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt – in my articles next week, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

Hey DZ 🙂 For those interested in expected goals (xG) in FPL as a means of predictive analysis & as an accurate metric for gauging team form: (using Michael Caley's data)

So I've been tinkering & updating my expected goals & expected goals against ticker focusing on the last six matches for a few weeks now. Testing out the results week-by-week. There has been some strong correlation with both xG/xGA efficiency/inefficiency & teams subsequently scoring (& conceding) more or less. Still tinkering with some details, but I'll try to post the full results here tomorrow & do a full summary, along with all of teams' xG/xGA from these past 6 GW's.

Seeing as many are taking out Spurs' & West Brom defenders right now, it's worth pointing out that Spurs' have the best defense these last six conceding a total xGA value of only 3.4 (or 0.57 per game). They also have the second best xGA fixtures these next six & have an interesting efficiency of 1.18 suggesting they've been pretty unlucky to concede some flukey goals of late as they have put on some of the best defensive performances thus far.

Now West Brom are top of my xGA ticker with an outstanding outlier xGA value & have the fourth best form these last six. The Baggies also have a relatively high efficiency of 1.2 & like Spurs have done many right things in defense, keeping teams to very poor shot selection. Also worth nothing they've only conceded over 1.0 xGA twice, to Swansea & Chelsea respectively.

Chelsea's attack has been the best of the league these last six in xG nearly touching 10.0 xG (1.63 average), so that's an understandable fixture to concede in considering Pulis' defense are notorious flat-track bullies. The interesting result here in my view was the Swansea match, where they kept the Swans to only 5 shots in the box, four of them being from the outskirt edges which would have equated to roughly 0.4 xGA the whole match. They lost the CS due to the one big chance they conceded all game which was an uncontested tap-in & one of the highest xG values in the game for a shot.

So yeah, I definitely wouldn't be selling Spurs or West Brom defense 🙂 & the notion that Everton have as good a defense as Spurs because they only have one more CS is mind-blowing imo, but that's a different mata all together.

      Thanks for that.
That's why the Myhill conundrum is really becoming a problem. I have him, and don't want to miss out on WBA cover these upcoming fixtures. But surely if Foster is fully fit he comes back in.

I have the same problem, there really hasn't too much concrete evidence that he'll be popped back in the XI & just take Myhill out. At least Pulis' hasn't said as much if I recall, so a lot of this is just warranted speculation seeing as Foster's the traditional #1. Still not sure Myhill deserves the boot just like that, he hasn't been poor by any means imo.

I'm crossing the bridge when I get there as I still have a playing second GK, but it's definitely playing with fire if you have no back-up.

      1. Zasa
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 2 months ago

For these last six, Watford are third for form conceding only 4.9 xGA (0.82 per game) & they've been very solid. What stands out is their efficiency of 1.63, terribly bad & the biggest defensive outlier of all defenses. Though as it stands, they're only 13th on the ticker. I'll post a more accurate number tomorrow though for the next six matches as I'm still working on some stuff 🙂

Liverpool are 6th on the ticker, coming in with one of bottom three worst defenses these lat six. Conceding a total of 7.6 xGA & an efficiency of 1.18, could very well see their efficiency drop a bit more with the fixture at hand though

      1. Zasa

Cheers 🙂 In it's simplest form, it's just diving the total amount of goals (excluding PK's & OG's) by the total xG value from those matches. A number ranging closer to 1.0 is healthy, but there are conclusions to make for a defense with an efficiency of 0.55 for example like Leicester. It could be they're scraping by fluky performances & Schmeichel's putting in a clinic, or....

I would guess some of those Stoke clean sheets against top oppoonents (When I benched butland - Yes I'm bitter) yielded a very low "efficiency" score for Stoke? Maybe not the last one though - They limited Arsenal pretty well most of the match.

I'm not really sure here, Scored. I'd have to take a more in-depth look at their numbers vs quality opposition (I've done so for Leicester thus far though)

Vs Arsenal, neither team made many clear-cut opportunities, pretty stale attacks. Like you said, Stoke were actually the ones that had the better look at goal all game.

I'll explain Nick - Leicester in GW 27 play Norwich, and in GW 30 Leicester play Newcastle (both newcastle and Leicester are out of the FA cup - so no blank gw 30 for them)

Newcastle will have a blank GW 27 if City progress since they play city that week. I think this is highly likely to happen since I can see overcoming 1 goal deficit.

Is there a good site which shows a team with all of their fixtures?

It would seem likely that Rose and Davies will continue to swap about and with FA cup and Europa league will impact who plays. I reckon we should be able to have a reasonable idea of who is going to play

I'd suggest it will go like this
              Palace - Rose
              Norwich - Davies
              Colchester - Rose
              Watford - Rose
              Man city - Davies

Just my thinking but having seen the way Poch sets up in certain games I think it has a fair chance of going like this. Im probably wrong though lol

I'm a little bit put out, but his purchase is part of a several move transfer move (which never end up going to plan) to get Sanchez in while retaining all my other big hitters and three-way premium front-line. So, I was always gonna do it at some point.

At least I can stop looking at fplstatistics now... Well, I can, but I won't. I'll be watching to ensure my decision is vindicated.

Yeah, I know. And I made the move knowing full well that fplstatistics may have been misleading.

But it was the seconnd day they said he was rising, and Daniels rose at the second day of being predicted.

I imagine Targett is very much a WC pick if you're finding budget.

Not keen on any of those trades tbh esp losing Ramsay.

At least you have Dawson. I'd just boot Ward.

Not too keen on losing Ramsey either but I would like Barkley. Shame I can't afford a direct Mahrez => Barkley swap.

If you don't have Dawson, it counts for nothing.

This Dawson thing is incredible. He's going to score an OG or get a red card this week and we'll never see Jafalad again.

I would like to play bench boost in the following GW but its a question for me that Sagna will be the one who starts against WestHam or Zabaleta can be the first choice for Pellegrini for RB. I wanna get the maximum point what i can, if i play this chip, but if a player won't play then the whole plan can be meaningless.

So guys, what your prediction on this, it's just a special occasion last GW when Zabaleta starts over Sagna or it will usual for the next couple of games? In the other hand, maybe its time to sell Sagna?..

Why especially this week? Monthly prize in ML? What's the rest of your team?

I think its just a good idea in this gw coz i have pretty good bench and i see opportunities and chance to get some cleansheets and unexpected points what i dont want to leave on the bench.
        Here it is:

        Cech
        Walker - Alder - Sagna
        Barkley - Mahrez - Ozil - Firmino
        Giroud - Lukaku - Kane

        Butland - Payet - Darmian - Bertrand

Sounds like a risk too far for a bench boost. I'd save it for a DGW

I wouldn't unless you have Dawson.

Villa and Swansea at home are good fixtures, I'd stick short term but I wouldn't invest.
