John Obi Mikel grabs a crucial away strike as Chelsea lose 2-1 in Paris. Manuel Lanzini closes in on his West Ham comeback, Oumar Niasse could be in line for his Everton bow, whilst Big Sam is hopeful on the fitness of Jan Kirchhoff ahead of Gameweek 27.

Mikel nets in narrow Blues loss

John Obi Mikel netted a crucial away goal as Chelsea fell to a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain. Diego Costa supplied the assist and chalked up three shots on target throughout the 90 minutes. In the absence of John Terry – who didn’t travel to France due to a hamstring complaint – Branislav Ivanovic partnered Gary Cahill in central defence, with Baba Rahman playing at left-back and Cesar Azpilicueta shifting onto the opposite flank. Having recovered from a minor calf knock, Oscar made his entrance at the 71-minute mark.

The Scout Says: Although a goal eluded him at Parc des Princes, Costa has now delivered attacking returns (four goals and as many assists) in six of his last seven outings for Chelsea in all competitions. The Spain international is certainly thriving under the tutelage of Guus Hiddink, rendering him a strong selection in the high-priced bracket ahead of an agreeable trio of match-ups (sou, nor, STO). It’s worth noting, however, that if the Blues beat Manchester City in their upcoming FA Cup encounter, their trip to Liverpool in Gameweek 30 will have to be rescheduled, forcing any new Costa investors to bench the 10.6-priced asset. On the defensive end, Ivanovic’s 9% ownership will be paying close attention to Terry’s rehabilitation, considering that the former’s continued deployment in a central role would limit his potential for attacking returns.

Niasse nears Toffees debut

Having negotiated a fortnight of intensive training, Oumar Niasse believes he is ready to don the Everton strip for the first time this weekend:

“I think I am ready this weekend. Training has been physical. When I’ve played in Russia and Turkey and there have been battles on the pitch, the coaches stop the game and give fouls. But here, it is much more complicated because people can push you and sometimes people can make a hard tackle and the coach says: ‘Play, play’. So the training here is more physical.”

The Scout Says: Given that Romelu Lukaku is nailed-on up front for the Merseysiders, Niasse looks likely to be handed pitch time on the flank in Roberto Martinez’ default 4-2-3-1 set-up. Although Tom Cleverley (three assists in three) and Aaron Lennon (two goals and one assist in three) boast good form on either wing, the fact that the Toffees fired 33 unsuccessful attempts in last week’s 1-0 home loss to West Bromwich Albion could convince Martinez to deploy a more natural finisher that can shoulder a portion of Lukaku’s scoring burden. Ultimately, Niasse’s classification as a forward by the Fantasy Premier League greatly diminishes his appeal at the 7.0 mark, leaving Ross Barkley as the only secure route into the Toffees midfield.

Berahino escapes FA action

Saido Berahino will not receive a three-match ban after an FA panel failed to arrive at a unanimous decision regarding his purported stamp on Everton’s James McCarthy last weekend.

The Scout Says: Granted his first start since Gameweek 11 when the Baggies recorded a 1-0 win at Goodison Park, Berahino failed to exert his influence on the attacking front, mustering zero attempts and one key pass. His fellow forward, Salomon Rondon, is enjoying a decent run of late, though, managing two goals and four bonus points in his previous trio of starts. Nonetheless, few managers will be willing to invest in an offense that ranked bottom for attempts (33), shots on target (seven) and key passes (24) over the last four Gameweeks, and faces a challenging run through to Gameweek 30 (CRY, lei, MUN, ars).

Allardyce hopeful on Kirchhoff

Sam Allardyce remains optimistic that Jan Kirchhoff – who lasted just 15 minutes against Manchester United before succumbing to a hamstring injury – will be passed fit for Sunderland’s road encounter against West Ham United next Gameweek:

“[The new boys were] absolutely fantastic, apart from Jan who picked up the hamstring, but hopefully he’ll be fit in a couple of weeks. We have a couple of weeks now for all the injuries to recover for the trip down to West Ham United. It is a good break to recover as many players as we can and get them out on that field and try and continue where we’ve left off.”

The Scout Says: Priced at 4.3 in FPL, the defender has been stationed in the holding midfield role in Big Sam’s new 4-1-4-1 set-up. In terms of Sunderland backline options, Patrick van Aanholt – who ranks joint-top among defenders for goals (five) – is the standout option but is hindered by the Black Cats’ inability to card a clean sheet in 12 straight fixtures. Such a dire defensive record means that, for now, new boy Wahbi Khazri (6.0) is the only Sunderland recruit that courts our interest. Aside from recording one goal and two assists in his first two starts, against Liverpool and United for the Wearsiders, he charted joint-third among midfielders for attempts (five) last Gameweek and joint-second for key passes (eight) across the past two Gameweeks. Given his recent fixture-proof showing, the Tunisian international could well profit from a run that pits him against West Ham, Palace, Everton, Newcastle and West Brom over the next six Gameweeks.

Mixed news for Hammers

West Ham United co-chairman David Gold revealed that Manuel Lanzini could travel with the squad to face Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup this weekend. Meanwhile, Diafra Sakho is undergoing supplementary fitness sessions but has not yet been given the green light to return to action. Conversing with the Irons’ official website, the Senegalese frontman expressed his intent to score another 15 goals before the end of the season:

“Honestly, my recovery’s going very well. Even though it’s been a lot quicker than what I’d thought, I’m in a hurry to come back because I promised to score 20 goals and at the moment I’m only on five in all competitions. So that leaves 15. I’m going to try right until the end to keep to my word. Even if the fans say, ‘the whole season he only played 20 or so games’, I hope, in the games that I’m going to play, to respect my words. That’s very important to me. I want to play right now. I need to play right now, but Stijn says ‘No, no, I have to wait’. I’m working very hard with Stijn and with Eamon, and at home as well.”

The Scout Says: West Ham lined up in a 4-3-3 formation for their visit to Norwich last Gameweek but are likely to revert to a 4-2-3-1 set-up upon the return of Lanzini, leaving Victor Moses and Michail Antonio to duel for the second wing berth in the attacking quartet. The former has impressed since being handed a sustained run of starts – notching three goals and four assists in eight outings – but the latter turned out an impactful cameo at Carrow Road, scything through the Canaries’ midfield with ease and earning the assist for Dimitri Payet’s strike with his direct running. On that note, Payet – who placed third among midfielders for key passes (14) over the last three Gameweeks and racked up a 13-point haul at Carrow Road – represents the prime route into the Londoners’ offense before a tantalising home tie against Sunderland.

Grealish back in Villa training

Jack Grealish has shaken off an ankle injury and returned to full training, putting him in contention for Aston Villa’s trip to Stoke City next Gameweek.

The Scout Says: In the wake of Villa’s 6-0 mauling at the hands of Liverpool, one would expect Remi Garde to make significant changes ahead of their meeting with the Potters. That being said, it’s difficult to envision a scenario in which we’d be encouraged to source coverage from the West Midlanders, considering that they rank bottom for goals scored (20) and fourth for goals conceded (46) throughout the term. Indeed, Fantasy managers may well be more inclined to target players that are pitted against Garde’s out-of-sorts outfit, with some eyeing up Stoke midfield pair Marko Arnautovic (if fit) and Xherdan Shaqiri as short-term options ahead of back-to-back home encounters with Villa and Newcastle.

      Yep. Huge fan of Veratti.

Chelsea won't overly mind that result though, I fancy them to do the job at Stamford Bridge. I still think Courtois can't be conceding from that angle and position for Cavani's goal though

So as Barcelona are playing this afternoon, I never realised you could play league games on a Champions League night as long as they aren't at the same time.

Surely that won't happen for the future DGW's??

No fine as it doesn't clash time-wise I believe. Kick-off is at 5:30 so the match will finish at 7:20, just in time to watch Real in the CL.

The PL don't have precedent for doing this though. I won't rule it out, but I don't see us doing it.

I think you're right I couldn't imagine the PL doing the same, there would be hardly any fans because of work commitments. But my main thought was that Barca have avoided a fine because the times don't clash.

    Considering a huge risk:

With so many considering GW 27 to be an annoyance with teams possibly not even fielding 11 players, is it actually a proposal to consider a triple captain chip for the week (saving the bench boost for the DGW).

I see captains in many players and the differential for the week could come with a plus 80 - 100 score if its possible.

    Talk to me.

I see extra correlation between a blank GW and a triple captain than a regular GW and a triple captain.

This, I think BB in the bigger DGW and TC in the smaller one.

Although a triple captain on Vardy/Mahrez at home to Norwich is very appealing.

I dont see why it would be any more or less of a risk than playing it in any other sgw. Its about points at the end of the season.

The percentages will always say back a double, of course some people will get lucky on a single as over the 35+ single game weeks someone will likely score higher in a single week than the main contenders in a double game week.

Its the same reason you captain a double gamer over a single gamer during a double game week, even if the single gamer is aguero

Ah didn't realise it was on soccer AM 🙂

It was a form of heads and volleys, if you hit it wide (over doesn't count) then you go in goals, everyone shares the same count of goals, whoever's in nets when the 20th and final goal goes in (must be a header) then is getting a red arse.

Everyone else takes penalties on him, he tries to save them, whoever scores gets to kick the ball at the keeper's arse as hard as they can, and the majority of the time, miss him completely in an anticlimax 🙂

    NickOfOz and Djenzio..

Sorry for my lack of replies, in work so I only get to comment in bursts!

I agree that I may have been skewing my argument with hindsight, and I see both of your points that it's a risky strategy to have a good 5th mid as it does inevitably lead to benching points (benching Mahrez's 6 for Firmino's 18 for example).

I still, however, think that overall, this risk will pay off for the good players, and it will definitely lead to some frustrating weeks, but overall I think those that have had a good strong front 8 this season have benefitted.

So yeah, bitta both, but this season in isolation, I'd go with strong front 8, and it's a trend I see continuing on into future seasons unless they raise the price of premium options from "lesser" teams.

    1. djenzio
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

agreed! a bitta both is the way to go.

I can see the good in both ways though, and this season has been strange in that there are so many cheap players doing well so you no longer need that extra cash a bench fodder mid can give you, and on the other hand points have been a bit more unpredictable with lesser teams and players causing upsets.

    2. Ste Wilkinson
      • 11 Years

I think it's better to be able to potentially bench points, because it means you can change for front 8 depending on fixtures + form, rather than taking what you're given.

Yup, decent player, but he'd lost his place in Paris, and he only had 6 months left...

When Khedira and Kroos only had 6 months left on their contracts they left for a LOT less..

Even RVP joined ManU from Arsenal for like £20m and he was seen as one of the (if not THE best) strikers in the league at the time moving between rivals..

Lavezzi is good, but that's extortionate money..

Teixeria going to China is a lot more baffling as he is young and had the chance to go to EPL.

I feel that's his career down the toilet now and there is no benefit going to China at that age with so much potential. very very strange.

no benefit? Apart from financially, experiencing another culture, helping grow the league in another area, playing in different competitions, new places.

Why should he have any loyalty to Europe? He is from Argentina

I know they are trying to buy up lots of platers, but the quality is nowhere near what it is in Europe, there is nowhere near the same level of completion and training,

I might be naive but I can't see him progressing as a player as much as if he stayed in Europe where there would be greater challenging, better players to learn from, better training, better facilities....

and if you're argument that he should go to China is because he is from Argentina....well that makes no sense really.

everywhere has to start from somewhere. The English league used to be vastly inferior to other European leagues but with them getting more money they improved.

Not sure why you would say the level of training would be so much worse there, how on earth would you know?

I was making the point on loyalty, why should he stay in Europe? It's just a job at the end of the day.

^this. People don't seem to remember that in 90's English clubs didn't even make it to the CL before the format was changed to allow the English champion a direct entrance, and even then they performed poorly and it took a decade of pouring money on PL to actually make it a top-4 league.

P.S. I think he meant Teixeira, not Lavezzi, but that's quite irrelevant for your point.

They didn't pay £23.5m for him as a transfer fee, that includes his contract cost so that's quite misleading.

"The Argentine's contract in France was due to expire at the end of the season, and instead of winding it down before leaving on a Bosman deal, he has made a switch to the Chinese Super League valued around the €4 million mark, while the player is expected to earn a net salary of €10m per annum, plus a bonus up to €6m."

Not quite as big a long shot of that, but the chances of the top three games taking place are slim. Now the next FLP deadline is after R5 of the Cup, the sensible thing to do is wait and see what happens at the weekend.

Ruddys back playing now and need to keep the funds to allow iggy -> vardy later. Not much other keepers at that price. Ill be sticking with Butland for now.

I know I will have room to manoeuvre with 2FT and intend on downgrading Arnie after GW 30.

    Anything you would change here?

    Cech
    Dann Wolly Toby
    Payet Antonio Mahrez Alli Sanchez
    Kane Vardy

Bench ~ (Forster, VVD, Simpson, Aguero)

    ~ Already on -4
    ~ Bench order OK?

If you think Chelsea score then put VVD 3rd sub.

I guess that won't make a difference as Simpson is suspended and Kun has a blank.

Yep, good advice doesn't come easy nowadays... The folks here commented on everything else but what I asked for.

This is my first season and the folks around here seem to be very helpful (not).

For the record I am an equal opportunity wummer . I annoy everyone . Your team is grand form what I can see . Don't do anymore transfers there are F.A Cup games still to come . For future reference taking a - 4 before a full set of F.A Cup games is daft . You could end up in a right mess if your players get injured . Once again don't do anymore transfers

For all those considering a transfer.. I rage transferred Naismith out for Vardy...

Really wish I'd waited. Nervous two weeks.

I imagine everyone is considering a transfer...
You needed a vardy anyway, plus hes unlikely to get injured on holiday. Think you have little to be nervous about

You should be fine mate. Leicester don't have any games so the only way you'll be red faced is if he gets injured in training

I'm moreso nervous that Kun / Ighalo will end up with no game or an injury... as Naismith looks likely to have a game in GW30.

I do feel that for the last 2 years we've been spoilt with good promoted strikers, Austin, Ings, Ighalo, even Wilson whilst fit. I just wonder, looking at the championship atm, where next season's will come from and even if we'll get lucky again!

Sorry just taken in a lot of wood. Delivery day.
Spencer I went and saw The Room (2003).
Doolittle put me on to it. I'd watched it many times before going to see it in the cinema. It's best if you watch it first as the audience joins in so much. If you go and see it, it's Leicester Square, a Prince Charles Cinema. Be sure to take a load of plastic spoons with you, at least 100.
I'm going to go every time they show it, it was the greatest cinematic experience of my life.

Funny you should say that. Saw my friend on the weekend who said he saw it at Prince Charles and they did the spoon thing. Not heard of it before!

For some reason they have picture frames in the background of the house with spoons in. So the whole audience just goes mental every time they see one.
Waiting for the next date to be released. It's nice as the director comes down to meet everyone.
