John Obi Mikel grabs a crucial away strike as Chelsea lose 2-1 in Paris. Manuel Lanzini closes in on his West Ham comeback, Oumar Niasse could be in line for his Everton bow, whilst Big Sam is hopeful on the fitness of Jan Kirchhoff ahead of Gameweek 27.

Mikel nets in narrow Blues loss

John Obi Mikel netted a crucial away goal as Chelsea fell to a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain. Diego Costa supplied the assist and chalked up three shots on target throughout the 90 minutes. In the absence of John Terry – who didn’t travel to France due to a hamstring complaint – Branislav Ivanovic partnered Gary Cahill in central defence, with Baba Rahman playing at left-back and Cesar Azpilicueta shifting onto the opposite flank. Having recovered from a minor calf knock, Oscar made his entrance at the 71-minute mark.

The Scout Says: Although a goal eluded him at Parc des Princes, Costa has now delivered attacking returns (four goals and as many assists) in six of his last seven outings for Chelsea in all competitions. The Spain international is certainly thriving under the tutelage of Guus Hiddink, rendering him a strong selection in the high-priced bracket ahead of an agreeable trio of match-ups (sou, nor, STO). It’s worth noting, however, that if the Blues beat Manchester City in their upcoming FA Cup encounter, their trip to Liverpool in Gameweek 30 will have to be rescheduled, forcing any new Costa investors to bench the 10.6-priced asset. On the defensive end, Ivanovic’s 9% ownership will be paying close attention to Terry’s rehabilitation, considering that the former’s continued deployment in a central role would limit his potential for attacking returns.

Niasse nears Toffees debut

Having negotiated a fortnight of intensive training, Oumar Niasse believes he is ready to don the Everton strip for the first time this weekend:

“I think I am ready this weekend. Training has been physical. When I’ve played in Russia and Turkey and there have been battles on the pitch, the coaches stop the game and give fouls. But here, it is much more complicated because people can push you and sometimes people can make a hard tackle and the coach says: ‘Play, play’. So the training here is more physical.”

The Scout Says: Given that Romelu Lukaku is nailed-on up front for the Merseysiders, Niasse looks likely to be handed pitch time on the flank in Roberto Martinez’ default 4-2-3-1 set-up. Although Tom Cleverley (three assists in three) and Aaron Lennon (two goals and one assist in three) boast good form on either wing, the fact that the Toffees fired 33 unsuccessful attempts in last week’s 1-0 home loss to West Bromwich Albion could convince Martinez to deploy a more natural finisher that can shoulder a portion of Lukaku’s scoring burden. Ultimately, Niasse’s classification as a forward by the Fantasy Premier League greatly diminishes his appeal at the 7.0 mark, leaving Ross Barkley as the only secure route into the Toffees midfield.

Berahino escapes FA action

Saido Berahino will not receive a three-match ban after an FA panel failed to arrive at a unanimous decision regarding his purported stamp on Everton’s James McCarthy last weekend.

The Scout Says: Granted his first start since Gameweek 11 when the Baggies recorded a 1-0 win at Goodison Park, Berahino failed to exert his influence on the attacking front, mustering zero attempts and one key pass. His fellow forward, Salomon Rondon, is enjoying a decent run of late, though, managing two goals and four bonus points in his previous trio of starts. Nonetheless, few managers will be willing to invest in an offense that ranked bottom for attempts (33), shots on target (seven) and key passes (24) over the last four Gameweeks, and faces a challenging run through to Gameweek 30 (CRY, lei, MUN, ars).

Allardyce hopeful on Kirchhoff

Sam Allardyce remains optimistic that Jan Kirchhoff – who lasted just 15 minutes against Manchester United before succumbing to a hamstring injury – will be passed fit for Sunderland’s road encounter against West Ham United next Gameweek:

“[The new boys were] absolutely fantastic, apart from Jan who picked up the hamstring, but hopefully he’ll be fit in a couple of weeks. We have a couple of weeks now for all the injuries to recover for the trip down to West Ham United. It is a good break to recover as many players as we can and get them out on that field and try and continue where we’ve left off.”

The Scout Says: Priced at 4.3 in FPL, the defender has been stationed in the holding midfield role in Big Sam’s new 4-1-4-1 set-up. In terms of Sunderland backline options, Patrick van Aanholt – who ranks joint-top among defenders for goals (five) – is the standout option but is hindered by the Black Cats’ inability to card a clean sheet in 12 straight fixtures. Such a dire defensive record means that, for now, new boy Wahbi Khazri (6.0) is the only Sunderland recruit that courts our interest. Aside from recording one goal and two assists in his first two starts, against Liverpool and United for the Wearsiders, he charted joint-third among midfielders for attempts (five) last Gameweek and joint-second for key passes (eight) across the past two Gameweeks. Given his recent fixture-proof showing, the Tunisian international could well profit from a run that pits him against West Ham, Palace, Everton, Newcastle and West Brom over the next six Gameweeks.

Mixed news for Hammers

West Ham United co-chairman David Gold revealed that Manuel Lanzini could travel with the squad to face Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup this weekend. Meanwhile, Diafra Sakho is undergoing supplementary fitness sessions but has not yet been given the green light to return to action. Conversing with the Irons’ official website, the Senegalese frontman expressed his intent to score another 15 goals before the end of the season:

“Honestly, my recovery’s going very well. Even though it’s been a lot quicker than what I’d thought, I’m in a hurry to come back because I promised to score 20 goals and at the moment I’m only on five in all competitions. So that leaves 15. I’m going to try right until the end to keep to my word. Even if the fans say, ‘the whole season he only played 20 or so games’, I hope, in the games that I’m going to play, to respect my words. That’s very important to me. I want to play right now. I need to play right now, but Stijn says ‘No, no, I have to wait’. I’m working very hard with Stijn and with Eamon, and at home as well.”

The Scout Says: West Ham lined up in a 4-3-3 formation for their visit to Norwich last Gameweek but are likely to revert to a 4-2-3-1 set-up upon the return of Lanzini, leaving Victor Moses and Michail Antonio to duel for the second wing berth in the attacking quartet. The former has impressed since being handed a sustained run of starts – notching three goals and four assists in eight outings – but the latter turned out an impactful cameo at Carrow Road, scything through the Canaries’ midfield with ease and earning the assist for Dimitri Payet’s strike with his direct running. On that note, Payet – who placed third among midfielders for key passes (14) over the last three Gameweeks and racked up a 13-point haul at Carrow Road – represents the prime route into the Londoners’ offense before a tantalising home tie against Sunderland.

Grealish back in Villa training

Jack Grealish has shaken off an ankle injury and returned to full training, putting him in contention for Aston Villa’s trip to Stoke City next Gameweek.

The Scout Says: In the wake of Villa’s 6-0 mauling at the hands of Liverpool, one would expect Remi Garde to make significant changes ahead of their meeting with the Potters. That being said, it’s difficult to envision a scenario in which we’d be encouraged to source coverage from the West Midlanders, considering that they rank bottom for goals scored (20) and fourth for goals conceded (46) throughout the term. Indeed, Fantasy managers may well be more inclined to target players that are pitted against Garde’s out-of-sorts outfit, with some eyeing up Stoke midfield pair Marko Arnautovic (if fit) and Xherdan Shaqiri as short-term options ahead of back-to-back home encounters with Villa and Newcastle.

    How come Barcelona have a La Liga game tonight during Champions League ties? Since allowances can be made maybe the FA will be able to do it too if the FA Cup gets congested with replays.

            because Barcelona are playing at 18:30, with CL games on at 20:45.

            I just meant I doubt PL teams would schedule a game at 17:30 as many of their fans would get there in time.

      I think it is you can't screen a domestic game during champ league games
      Barca must have to show all their games so that's why it is early

    Sigh...

    Just cooking up a bit of dinner and listening to a discussion with Vanessa Phelps on the radio about domestic abuse.

    As somebody who managed to end up living with a total lunatic for a few months I can confirm that it is not only women who are the victims of abuse ...http://www.theguardian.com/society/2010/sep/05/men-victims-domestic-violence

    It hasn't been mentioned once....again.

        It was a piggin nightmare. Totally self obsessed violent psychopath. I was living in Bristol with her and ended up having to drive home from work and pack my bags. I left with just what I could fit in the car. Lunatic.

        It peeves me that DV of men never gets mentioned...and it's a big issue as the article says.

          Bloody hell. I was lucky in the respect that my ex showed her true colours just 9 months in and getting out wasnt too difficult.

          I agree, more should be done about this. It gets brushed under the carpet, but if it is DV of a woman its front page of the newpaper.

    Sanchez - Ozil - Alli - Payet - Mahrez

    Kane (c) - Ighalo (vc)

    McCarthy - Aguero - Simpson - Borthwick Jackson

    A. Save with 1 FT? Then I could do Sanchez + Ighalo ---> Costa + Willian next round without a hit.

    C. Transfer inn a defender for Reid.

        Better as in more precise, or higher? After all, this is a weighted average of the outcomes and should be the expected number.

        The certainty would help tremendously towards which trades to make though.

      • 12 Years
      9 years, 10 months ago

      Taking the expected value i.e. Sum(number x probability) is dangerous in this case as there are lots of conditional probabilities and you likely have a high variance and a non symmetric distribution. (I'm guessing that's how you got 7.6 at least.)

      I'm just going for my 90% confidence band and saying between 4 and 9 players.

        Of course, I'm not planning as if I had 7.6 secure starters 😉

        Thanks, for a very useful tool to illustrate the situation of our squads, by the way. Of course, planning anything based on it instead of waiting for the outcomes this weekend makes no sense, but hey; "plans are worthless, planning is everything".

          You'd be surprised, Diva and I have had the tool up for a couple of weeks and VVD, Fonte and Vardy have been 3 of his last 4 transfers in based on this and his team looks *set* now.

          I just didn't get round to the write up for sharing until the other night 😛

            Well, transferring in players from teams that are 100% certain to have a game in GW30 is slightly different from going for a City/Chelsea player based on 48% vs 52%...

            VVD, Vardy and Fuchs were my transfers in for GW25 and GW26, but that was based on knowing that Southampton and Leicester will both definitely have matches in GW30, and on them being players I wanted in my team anyway.

            They were replacing two players who had no match in GW27, and Sagna who had become both injured and subject to rotation, so I did not need to consider percentages for other players.

            Percentages might have been useful in GW24-26 if I had had a choice of players to replace who all had uncertain matches in GW30, but surely now we are past GW26 the only sensible strategy is to wait till this weekend's cup matches have been played before deciding on this week's transfers?

      I've set up an Atelti defence so I'm splitting my 12 into 4 mids and 8 strikers transfers.

      My strikers Look something like

      Hulk -> Lewa/Messi -> Aguero (x2) - > Messi
      Ibra -> Ronaldo (x2) -> Costa -> Lewa
      Jonas -> Benzema (x2) -> Griezmann

      I might add in a 9th and do Griezmann -> Neymar/Suarez too

      Mids are

      ADM -> Kums
      Willian -> Ozil/Pogba
      James -> D. Costa (x2)
      or Shatov -> D. Costa (x2)

        That looks very good to me. The Lewa/Messi decision is going to be tough next week, I am including Suarez in my thinking as well. Also tempted to get Griezmann in for their away leg but I have a feeling that could go wrong.

          • 12 Years

          Yeah Griezmann is tempting but I'm having trouble looking past Aguero, assuming I keep both Ronaldo and Benzema.

    short question from a newbie: if a team wouldnot have 11 players fit or even having a matchup are they getting 0 points for the whole team since they couldnot "start" with 10 or would that be points for the rest of the team...?

    1. Trigg ⭐️

      No, you get the points for the 10 players you play.

        • 12 Years

        this, the point is 11 players is better because, well its 2 more appearance points and an extra chance for goals/assists/cleanies etc.

        Say he has 8 non blankers in mid/fwd, and only 2 non-blankers in defense (+ a playing GK)

        He is asking if he gets the points for those he can play (10), or zero points for the whole team since he can't field 11

      Whatever players play get points mate. Let's say you can only field 9 you get points for those 9.

      You get points for the players who play, regardless of how many you have.

      What's your current defence and GK's?

      Leicester/Soton/Stoke defenders look the best bet at the moment.

    Im also strangely tempted by getting Ramsey in.

    Good differential and thought he could have grabbed a goal v Leicester.

      Is he still playing in the "double pivot"?

        He seems to get forward enough, regardless of position.

      Looking at the stats over the last two games though, doesn't look as good as some of the other midfielders. 🙁

            I'd get him in after the game. Think I'm selling Sanchez before the Utd game.

    Sanchez belongs on the bench as things stand, right? AoA-chip used.

    Alli (SWA) Mahrez (NOR) Payet (SUN) Özil (mun)

    Kane (SWA) Vardy (NOR) Ighalo (BOU)

        Crazy to bench Sanchez over Ig and Alli, but its a crazy season. Seems to make sense.

        Unneccessary risk looking at his form and ownership? Could be a punt tho

    Ezequiel Lavezzi joins Hebei Fortune. He'll be paid £23.5m after tax in two years. 5th highest paid footballer in the World 😯

    With regards to the earlier debate about the 5th mid strategy,

    Surely the failure of high priced players and abundance of options throughout the price structures is a great thing. It brings the game back to it's essence - testing the ability to identify the 'hot' players and rewarding the shrewd and intuitive.

    I fully count myself as exposed this season, being way down the ranks - whereas during the Suarez season I finished comfortably in the top 10k on the back of captaining Suarez, Hazard and Aguero at just the right times, and picking the right 'cheap' options.

    I think this trend will continue into the coming years as well, as more and more players get turned over by these clubs looking for instant success, with unlimited funds to try new players. As the years go on, this game will get harder and harder and will become less about luck and more about the core skills of the game.

    Are we all gonna be selling a bunch of player we don't want to sell very shortly, for the sake of GW30?

    I'm looking at my squad, and I see a lot of players with value tied up, who I wouldn't necessarily want to lose long term.

    Gonna hard to sort your GW30 squad without ruining it for the next few weeks afterwards. Suppose I plan WC into GW 33 (at this stage at least)

      Yep! I've already sold Aguero if it makes you feel better 🙂

      I might WC in week 31 if I trash my team too much.
