Fantasy managers are bracing themselves for the knock-on effect of this weekend’s FA Cup results, with a handful of Gameweek 30 fixtures currently at risk of postponement. We cast an eye over the previous two days’ press conferences this morning, assessing the latest injury news and the weekend plans of a number of top-flight managers:

Arsenal
In his usual Friday morning press conference, Arsene Wenger issued an update on a couple of Arsenal defenders ahead of this lunchtime’s cup encounter against Hull:

“Koscielny will be available. He has a test today but it will be positive…He (Gabriel) is running outside. He is out for Saturday. I believe one more week. He started running yesterday but one more week [is needed]. “

Koscielny limped out of the weekend win over Leicester with a leg problem, whilst Gabriel – who had started back-to-back league matches prior to the Foxes clash – missed out with a hamstring complaint, allowing Per Mertesacker to return to the starting XI. When quizzed on rotation, Wenger also went on to say he will play “a usual strong team” and admitted new boy Mohamed Elneny “has a chance” of starting in the centre of the park. Danny Welbeck could also be in line to start after netting the late winner against Leicester, though Petr Cech will be rested as David Ospina is Wenger’s chosen keeper in the FA Cup.

Bournemouth
Eddie Howe was somewhat reluctant to reveal his plans for Bournemouth’s home clash against Everton later today. Briefing the press first thing yesterday morning, the Cherries boss would only admit:

“We’d love to progress. I’ll leave the team selection as a surprise! I won’t tell you, but there will be some changes, we’ve got a good squad.”

Chelsea
John Terry remains sidelined for Chelsea’s clash against City at Stamford Bridge, Guus Hiddink has confirmed.

“John will not be fit for this weekend. I saw him this morning, he was with the physios. Yesterday he was training a bit on the pitch, but there are still too many problems for him to be fit for the weekend. It is still the same issues. We have another week and I hope he will be available for the next game (Southampton away on January 27). I can’t predict it, but we have to be a bit cautious with him as well because he likes to be there every day. We know him, you know him – he loves to play.”

The Blues’ new centre-half Matt Miazga could possibly feature for the first time if he can prove his fitness, though Hiddink is likely to field Branislav Ivanovic at the heart of defence alongside Gary Cahill, with Kurt Zouma out for the season.

Crystal Palace
Alan Pardew will make a last-minute decision on Yannick Bolasie and Bakary Sako as both step up their return to fitness following injury. Ahead of the cup encounter with Spurs, the Palace boss admitted:

”We have been cautious with him (Bolasie) in the last two weeks, so this week we have protected him and we’re not going to rush him back. That’s the same with Bakary, so they won’t be involved at Tottenham unless they’re 100 per cent fit, I can assure you that.”

Dwight Gayle and Joe Ledley could also be back in contention, then, with Pardew going on to say:

“The injury news for us is that the squad is healthier. We have no McArthur or Puncheon; they’re a little bit more long term. But everybody else is pretty close.”

Everton
Roberto Martinez conceded that Everton’s big-money signing Oumar Niasse is a big doubt for this evening’s trip to Bournemouth:

“We want to make sure Oumar is fully fit and ready. He had a little surgery on his wrist and that area has been causing him a bit of a problem. He is getting physically stronger with every session and his positive attitude is contagious. The next 48 hours will give us the final answer on whether or not Oumar will be available. He still has an outside chance but, if not, I feel very confident he will be fit and ready to be involved for the next game against Aston Villa.”

Given that there’s a fortnight until their next match, Niasse’s likely absence could allow Tom Cleverley and Aaron Lennon to retain the flank roles should Martinez opt against rotation out wide. Elsewhere, John Stones has stepped up his recovery from injury and is expected to be part of the squad, though Mo Besic is very likely to miss out again. The Toffees boss also confirmed that Joel Robles – who has now started the last five in all competitions – will continue in goal as he is the club’s designated keeper in cup matches this season.

A win for the Toffees would force their Gameweek 30 clash against Sunderland to be postponed and would have big repercussions for Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley owners, given that they are already without a fixture in Gameweek 27.

Manchester City
With a Champions League trip to Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday evening, Manuel Pellegrini has hinted at fielding a somewhat weakened line-up for City’s FA Cup clash against Chelsea on Sunday:

“Sagna worked today after ten days out. Mangala is injured, Nasri, De Bruyne and Bony are also out. Bony has started working on the pitch these last two days. He needs at least one week more. We have just 13 players available to play – we have to play Champions League on Wednesday – we’ll see the best team we can play on Sunday. We couldn’t play on the Saturday for some reason, so we put out the best team we can. “Young players have the option and they must take their chances. We normally have some young players in the cup – one or two maximum. I hope with the team we play against Chelsea, we hope they make the performance that we know they can. For me always the priority is the next game but we must make an exception now because of so many injuries. After that, we have to play a really important 180 minutes against Kiev.”

Given that City also face a Capital One Cup final against Liverpool the following week, Pellegrini’s team sheet will be eagerly anticipated this weekend. If City fall to defeat against Guus Hiddink’s side and therefore exit the FA Cup, their Gameweek 30 trip to Norwich would then take place. A win, however, would mean Sergio Aguero is without fixtures in Gameweek 27 and 30, with his owners potentially looking elsewhere for a short-term replacement.

A win for Chelsea, meanwhile, would result in the postponement of their home match with Liverpool in Gameweek 30. Bearing in mind the Reds also have a blank Gameweek 27 and clash with City in Gameweek 28, those holding the likes of Roberto Firmino will surely be reassessing their options.

Stoke
With just a week to go until their home clash with Villa, Stoke are nursing a number of backline concerns, with Erik Pieters and Philipp Wollscheid their only fully-fit defenders. Phil Bardsley is nursing a leg problem, Glenn Johnson is sidelined with knee ligament damage, whilst Marc Muniesa is hoping to overcome a hamstring complaint. Geoff Cameron is expected to miss out, though assistant manager Marc Bowen refused to rule out Ryan Shawcross:

“Ryan hasn’t joined in with the group yet. He’s just started line running and is working himself to a standstill. The ideal scenario is to get him home next week and ready to join in with the other lads, then he has the best part of a week to see if he can make the Villa game.”

A potential return for Shawcross would make a significant difference to how we assess the Potters’ defence ahead of back-to-back home encounters with Villa and Newcastle. Mark Hughes’ men have conceded 10 goals in the last four since their skipper limped off early at Leicester in Gameweek 23 –prior to that, they’d served up seven clean sheets in 12.

Tottenham
Tom Carroll is will be absent for “seven to 10 days” after being forced off with a cut Achilles in Tottenham’s Europa League draw at Fiorentina. Hugo Lloris remains out of the clash against Palace but has a chance of returning for Thursday’s home encounter against the Italians.

The likes of Harry Kane, Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier can expect to return to the starting line-up after being utilised as subs on Thursday night.

Watford
Watford duo Miguel Britos and Jose Manuel Jurado are back in training after missing out against Palace last weekend. The pair will be assessed ahead of the Hornets’ home clash with Leeds, whilst Costel Pantilimon is expected to get the nod between the sticks ahead of Heurelho Gomez.

West Brom
Tony Pulis has conceded that “at least four players, maybe five” will miss the Baggies’ cup encounter with Reading. James Morrison and Callum McManaman can account for two of those names, whilst Gareth McAuley remains a doubt despite stepping up his recovery from a hamstring problem by returning to training earlier in the week.

West Ham
Slaven Bilic rolled out an update on his players ahead of West Ham’s cup trip to Blackburn yesterday morning:

“Well, Andy Carroll is out and Enner Valencia also. Manuel Lanzini is back and Reidy should be OK for the Sunderland game. Diafra Sakho is hopefully going to start training with us on Monday or Tuesday. Joey O’Brien and James Tomkins are still out, with Sam Byram cup-tied, we are a little bit struggling with that position, but we are going to compensate that position.”

Lanzini’s comeback could see Bilic return to a 4-2-3-1 set-up at Ewood Park and with Dimitri Payet nailed-on, Michail Antonio will be hoping to remain ahead of Victor Moses in the pecking order out wide. Bilic admitted he will start cup keeper Darren Randolph at Ewood Park before going on to say he will play his “strongest team possible”.

If you take away replays you take away the opportunity for lower league clubs to make a bit of money, it would be yet another shot in the arm for the not so mighty.

      I'm sorry but that's nonsense.

The FA Cup should not be changed on the whim of FF players. The greatest cup competition in the world should stay as it is.

Replays is not what makes it the great cup that it is. Sure it's great, but changes CAN make it better you know.

It hasn't been a great competition since the 90s.

Anyway, having no replays would make it more exciting. They only exist so small clubs can try and get a second payday

          Why has it not?
and we wouldn't want small clubs to be able to earn a bit of extra money would we?

Just because many fans now have the attention span of May Flys.

Why not cut it to it essence and just have penalties from the start of each game.
So much more time for fireworks and Cheer leaders.

As a fan of a National League Club, replays are brilliant for the fans and the club. Huge revenue for smaller sides.

As for big clubs, if there's something wrong with anything, the old Arsene is the first to moan about it but he's happy for them to stay

brethren and sistren of fantasyshire, i bring to you a theory on my beloved club. the premier league club who wear yellow but don't get intoxicated tv chefs shouting on the pitch at half time.

the theory is simple and based on watching them all season. with 1 game every week they are a different (superior) side to when they have midweek games cramping the schedule.

weekend games after no midweek duties (caps = at home):

    everton 2-2 draw
    WEST BROM 0-0 draw
    SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 draw
    SWANSEA 1-0 win
    newcastle 1-2 win
    C PALACE 0-1 loss
    bournemouth 1-1 draw
    ARSENAL 0-3 loss
    stoke 0-2 win
    WEST HAM 2-0 win
leicester 2-1 loss (gomes' horror day)
    MAN UTD 2-1 loss
    aston villa 2-3 win
    NORWICH 2-0 win
    sunderland 0-1 win
    LIVERPOOL 3-0 win
    chelsea 2-2 draw
    MAN CITY 1-2 loss
    NEWCASTLE FA CUP 1-0 win
    NEWCASTLE 2-1 win
nottm forest fa cup 0-1 win
    c palace 1-2 win

played 22, won 12, drew 5, lost 5, failed to score in 4 of the 22 games.

midweek games/weekend game after midweek duties:

    preston league cup 1-0 loss
    man city 2-0 loss
    TOTTENHAM 2-1 loss
    southampton 2-0 loss
    swansea 1-0 loss
    CHELSEA 0-0 draw
    tottenham 1-0 loss

played 7, won 0, drew 1, lost 6, failed to score in 6 of the 7 games.

the theory is basically they play such an intense pressing and shape based game that even just 1% missing from the legs can mean being a couple of metres short, a couple of metres more open, an extra wrong choice due to a slightly more fatigued mind, one less attack forced, 1 more attack conceded etc etc.

2 of the non scoring games in the first list were in the opening month when flores was still trying to find ways of fitting ighalo and deeney in the team together without ighalo having to play out of position. the losses were against 4 of the current top 5 and palace. one thing to point out is they have had some tough fixtures in the second column, the manner of defeat in each though was the worry. southampton, swansea and the most recent tottenham game for example were complete no shows.

bournemouth in the first list should be mentioned too with the same opposition up next. that was probably the most disappointed i've been after one of the 'easier' fixtures this season. bournemouth were the better team, watford created almost nothing, boruc gave ighalo a goal, gomes saved a penalty. they really escaped with a draw

Wonderful little analysis, and I also agree with Doosra that the same applies to Leicester. They play similar styles that rely on squeezing 110% from every single player on the pitch.

I agree that there is some evidence in the theory, but look at those teams that they've played in the midweek/weekend game after midweek duties

City away- honest expecting a lot from this?
Spurs home- Spurs pushing for the title
Southampton away- St. Mary's is a tough away day regardless
Swansea away- Right in the middle of the new manager bounce if memory serves
Chelsea home- Guus' has picked Chelsea's away form right up
      Spurs away- see above

They are all tough games that realistically I would not be expecting great returns from my watford assets in.

they've definitely been tougher on average, and will get even more so with bournemouth at home next in the first list then leicester and man utd back to back '2nd list' games. was the performances in each. swansea, southmpton and spurs away would probably be 1, 2 and 3 in a countdown for worst performances of the season. the only positive in each was that they came away with 0 points rather than the minus points they probably deserved.

        From MacCauley:

Covenanters, driven mad by oppression, had lately murdered the Primate, had taken arms against the government, had obtained some advantages against the King's forces, and had not been put down till Monmouth, at the head of some troops from England, had routed them at Bothwell Bridge. These zealots were most numerous among the rustics of the western lowlands, who were vulgarly called Whigs. Thus the appellation of Whig was fastened on the Presbyterian zealots of Scotland, and was transferred to those English politicians who showed a disposition to oppose the court, and to treat Protestant Nonconformists with indulgence. The bogs of Ireland, at the same time, afforded a refuge to Popish outlaws, much resembling those who were afterwards known as Whiteboys. These men were then called Tories. The name of Tory was therefore given to Englishmen who refused to concur in excluding a Roman Catholic prince from the throne.

If you get the ball in a tight area raise your head look for the pass and if you get it with plenty of space go for the dribble. Wingers 101.

            Strong fixtures.

A fair chances the scouts won't have Eriksen because of Alli.

They may go a 3-5-2 this week in which case you'd imagine Arnautovic could get a side for them both not Deeney/Ighalo.

            Could be a nice diff.

Just reading the live commentary in various places for this match.

I don't understand Arsenal fans (some of) are they just hell bent on moaning continually season after season....because they do....They're a great team with some great players that just about every club in the land would swap places with.

      Moan, moan, moan....

Depends on how my season is going, actually. Given this season, when I am actually doing pretty well, I would not want major shakeups, and hence no DGWs....

But hey, DGWs are still fun!

So next season we should encourage everyone worldwide playing FPL to pick the exact same team and make the exact same transfers.

That way at the end of the season, we'd all be on the exact same points, same transfers etc.

FPL would have to front up 3.5m pairs of PL tickets 😎

Why?...The alternative is to leave the minority parties with all the power as they decide which way they will go.

nick Clegg buried all the PR nonsense as a good idea the day he shafted the students.

                  They express different voices.

No it doesn't. It leads to a ballots paper where you get to choose which person in your conscience you want to represent you based on their manifesto. The one that most people choose to represent them gets the seat whilst the rest get to go home and wonder why they lost.

If Clegg and the like want more than two party politics then it's very simple....Make sure more people want you to represent them.

                It's not rocket science.

Partisan politics is a good thing though, as long as there are clear debates and the politicians are for the people and not themselves.

The most important part of politics is the link and accountability of the manifesto and the voter. Anything other than FPTP opens the door to politicians doing exactly what they please based on their own interests (see Nick Clegg for more details).

The problem with PR and any form of coalition is how do you stop the minor PR parties having the lions share of power when it comes to straight forward votes in the HoC...

I understand all the arguments for and against but I can never accept the amount of power it hands over to a a minority party (potentially)

Clegg's move on tuition fees and how he stiched up his voters is all we ever need to know about PR or coalitions.

The effect was exactly the same.

Somebody asked earlier who voted the Tories in...well actually it was Nick Clegg and his desire for power in a coalition. No Libdem voted for that.

It has the same flaws as a H2H league in FPL. It *generally* evens out most things but FPTP is not the fairest representation of things. In 2015 my vote had no say in the general election as I was in a 92% conservative error. I voted anyway but it had no tangible meaning like you'd get in proportional rep.

Whilst you can divide up the number of seats by promotion you can never decide up the power by proportion under any form of PR.

It only leads to grubby back room deals and handshakes to win over the most minor of parties to the side of another party that may be totally at odds with the voters intention (see Nick Clegg).

This is my current assessment of what's going to happen to the Arsenal replay.

Most likely: Replay goes to GW30 and the FA Cup QF gets pushed back to Monday in gw32 or gw33, not affecting those PL games.
Alternative: Replay goes to March 8th (A CL night) and the FA takes a fine and the winner plays the QF in GW30 as per the FA Cup schedule.

In an exceptionally mild winter we should not be facing such rare fixture chaos. Why blame the domestic schedule when we have a bloated euro calendar with so many breaks for international friendlies? Can you tell which way I shall be voting on June 23?!!

the vote is on the eu. Not whether we are in Europe or not...

I worry about this country sometimes.

Agreed, but there is an analogy in terms of the degree to which our ability to schedule fixtures is subservient to UEFA's rules and whims (no prem matches in any week where there is a Champ League Match ffs!)

There is also an issue about understanding the rules.

There is nothing to stop us playing out games at anytime including at the same time as the CL. The only issue is whether the game is televised or not which is totally up to the deals done by the fa and premier league.

That is a bit ridiculous. If UEFA has a good product it shouldn't fear a rare bit of competition from FA Cup replays.

          Dear PL,

Friday night is a nice time to schedule matches.

          Sincerely you are welcome,

You'll still possibly have games spread over 4 days which will dilute the excitement.

I don't know about that but they should really go for it especially that BuLi and Serie A do so for teams playing midweek in CL

I can't access FFS or FPL at work so my team setting is done on Friday late night and Saturday.

Don't know if I will keep playing if Friday night matches become very regular.

Or I can just find another job!

That always annoyed my on Strike It Lucky - the question was "What is a Hot Spot not?", and the answer given was "Not a good spot" - the answer should have been "A good spot", as a Hot Spot was not a good spot, instead of not not a good spot (i.e. a good spot) which the given answer suggested.

Good news for Aston Villa fans out there. The club have now scrapped the former Goal of the Month competition in favour of a new initiative called the "Month of the Goal" competition.

What about 'Dribble of the Month' and give it to Adama Traore for his customary dribble in his 2 minute appearance in the match?
