We round off the day with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the midweek round of fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Manchester City’s penalty shoot-out win over Liverpool at Wembley has perhaps had an effect on your armband decisions this week. With Sergio Aguero playing 120 minutes on Sunday ahead of an Anfield re-match with the Reds, the Argentine is – for once – amongst the chasing pack behind Jamie Vardy.

With West Brom set to pay visit on Tuesday evening, the Foxes frontman tops our Captain Poll for the second successive Gameweek due to his outstanding home consistency – Vardy has scored or assisted in 11 of 13 appearances in front of his own supporters.

At the time of writing, Romelu Lukaku and Mesut Ozil tie for second spot with 14% each. After enjoying the weekend off, the Belgian now faces a trip to Villa – he bagged a brace in a 4-0 win over the Midlands outfit earlier this season and should be fully refreshed to take advantage of Remi Garde’s strugglers.

Meanwhile, Ozil delivered a goal and assist at Old Trafford and now looks for a third double-figure haul in four at home to a Swansea side with one clean sheet on their travels.

As for Aguero, he faces a Liverpool defence with just one clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks. The Argentine has already netted against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league and with the Reds sweating over the availability of a number of central defenders, he could be in line for returns at Anfield in a match that City surely have to win to remain in the title race.

There’s a handful of differentials lurking further down our poll for those willing to take a punt. Diego Costa is selected by just 7% for Chelsea’s trip to out-of-sorts Norwich, though there remains question marks over his minutes after Guus Hiddink admitted he could be rested for one of the next two matches with the Champions League clash against PSG in mind.

Marko Arnautovic will be looking to replicate his weekend 15-point return at home to a Newcastle outfit that have lost five road trips on the bounce. Riyad Mahrez, Alexis Sanchez and Ross Barkley offer viable alternatives to their aforementioned team-mates, whilst United’s man of the moment, Marcus Rashford, seeks a third successive brace at Old Trafford as Watford pay visit on Wednesday night.

Next up, we now delve into the data over the last four matches to shed further light on the situation and assess the validity of the current crop of poll results.

    2 FT and 2.8m ITB

    Butland
    Kosc, VVD, Simpson
    Ozil, Mahrez, Payet, Alli
    Kun, Kane, Vardy

    Hennessey, Stanislas, Cresswell, Williams

    What to do please?

    A) Stanislas -> Lingard
    B) Payet -> Silva
    C) Cresswell -> Kompany
    D) Something else

          You could play him this week and bench Alli who is a risk this gameweek. Then next week, perhaps bench him vs Chelsea away. Being on pens is tricky though as arguably you can't bench him.

    3 x FT's until GW30, and 3 transfers planned.

    Stage 1 - GW28 - Avoid the lure of Arnie and save a FT.
    Stage 2 - GW29 - Rage transfer Sanchez out for Silva and calmly do Payet to Siggy. Bask in points vs Villa and Norwich.
    Stage 3 - GW30 - Lukaku > Kane and triple up on Spurs vs Villa. 11 + 1 on the bench for safety.

    What could possibly go wrong 😕

          I was thinking Alli to Eriksen at some point (probably GW30) as well, but I'm just not convinced the extra outlay in funds is worth it. Alli could easily match Eriksen, I think.

                Thanks. I think it's the touches in the box and shots that keep me thinking that Alli will just keep getting sneaky goals here and there.

                I was admittedly late to Alli bandwagon, but I couldn't deny that he was kept getting forward consistently and getting (what to me were) more meaningful touches than Eriksen.

                I'll keep considering this.

    Morning everyone!

    Hart (liv)

    Fuchs / Smalling* / Wollscheid

    Alli* / Ozil (c) / Alexis / Mahrez

    Paloschi / Vardy (vc) / Kane

    (Hennessey/Sigurdsson/Moreno/Janmaat)

    Thinking of saving my FT here. Plan is to get Aguero and Silva in for Kane and Alexis next week. 3.4 million banked. Thoughts?

    Thank you in advance 🙂

    Forster
    VVD, Wolly, Daniels
    Mahrez, Payet, Willian, Ozil
    Vardy(C), Iggy, Kane

    Lloris, Alli, Otamendi, Dawson

    Question is Iggy to Kun for -4?
    I'm concerned about Kun's playing time and away at liverpool after 120 minutes Sunday.
    Equally concerned Kun getting a hat trick.
    Equally concerned Kun blanking and Iggy knocking in at least one against a dodgy United back line.

        That's a huge conundrum for me now. As someone who ditched Kun for Vardy in GW27, getting him back in for Villa and Norwich is a priority.

        Alli* / Ozil (c) / Alexis / Mahrez / Sigurdsson

        Paloschi / Vardy (vc) / Kane

        With this front 7 it's tough to find a way especially with the upcoming Swansea fixtures

    I want to hear Alli news to help my Payet/Alli benching decision so do I set my alarm for a half an hour/hour after Tottenham's presser has finished or do I wing it and make a call before I go to bed?

    2 FT and 2.8m ITB

    Butland
    Kosc, VVD, Simpson
    Ozil, Mahrez, Payet, Alli
    Kun, Kane, Vardy

    Hennessey, Stanislas, Cresswell, Williams

    All good for Stanislas -> Arnie?

    Would mean benching Alli this week, then Arnie next week, then playing both in GW30.

    Or is there a better transfer?

    B) Start Siggy or Ali?

    Sometimes in life you have to put your hands up and admit you made a mistake...

    Think its time I did a reverse transfer and do Sanchez --> Ozil

    Anyone think I should hold off a little longer or right move?

      Swansea conceded 19 shots in the box vs Spurs.

      I would do it. Made the same mistake. I had enough in the bank to do Payet -> Ozil so I'm keeping Sanchez for one more week but he's gone in 29 unless he hauls against Swansea.

    Hi All. Looking for some advice on which 4 of my Mids to play for GW28: Of these 5, which one would you bench?

    Mahrez
    Ozi
    Payet
    Alli
    Arnautovic

    I am leaning towards benching Alli given injury concern (could be less than 100% if he even plays 90 minutes, Curse of Dembele, etc.). Thanks

    Butland - McCarthy
    Alderweireld - Bellerin - Van Dijk - Ward - Simpson
    Sanchez - Ozil - Payet - Mahrez - Alli
    Aguero - Kane - Vardy

    2 FT and with no money in the bank, my hands are pretty tied.

    I was planning for Siggy in for Payet all along, but since I can't really make any OTHER moves due to the money problem I'm looking at Payet > Barkley(c) one week punt before doing Barkley > Siggy next week.

    I've never done a 1-week punt like this before so feels strange but since I already have 9 for GW30 I suppose I can risk it..

    Which one would you pick for the use of 1 FT?

    A: Dawson -> Ivan
    B: Payet -> Barkley
    C: Simpson -> Fuchs / Huth

    Note that I have 9 players for Gw30 now.
    Buying the player with blank on Gw30 should be ok.

        Hooked for Colback, well that's a damning indictment of either his play or Steve McLaren's managing.

      Newcastle were losing 3-0 at half time, and he was brought off for Colback for defensive solidity/to avoid humiliation

        Cheers TFF its funny how loss aversion still comes into play when a side's 3-0 down.

          Hahaha yeah. Away from home, Newcastle have been abysmal. McLaren has said they have worked on it though during their 18 day break. As someone who's rival owns Arnautovic, I'll be watching the game from behind the sofa!

    A) Wolly (home to Newcastle)
    B) Toby (West Ham away)

    Butland
    Ivanovic, Alderweireld, Simpson
    Sanchez, Ozil, Mahrez, Lingard
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

    De Gea, Alli, Targett, Wollscheid

    Good to go boys? Unsure if I've picked the right keeper and defence. Benching Wolly to spread the risk. Stoke double up burned me this weekend. I can see an argument for starting Targett over Toby but the last time I benched Toby he conceded as I expected but grabbed an assist and 3 baps.

    Swap Alli for Eriksen? Alli isn't far off a two match suspension and I think Eriksen is really heating up. I would consider both but I'm maxed on Spurs players.

        Obviously Eriksen is far more expensive, but I don't want Alli to just be sitting on the bench or taking up a spot that I'd rather play someone else.

      Needs 3 yellows. I'd keep Alli as he's better value for money and wouldn't worry about the suspension risk at all yet

        Yeah, I keep seeing different numbers, one thing I read said 8. 7 means there's a much better chance he could either make it through or be the last game or two of the season, which is too far out to plan for.

          Sky Sports put out an article that was wrong on nearly every player they mentioned. I put a comment at the bottom linking to the FA's suspensions page and my comment vanished pretty quick ....

    Does anybody else think Kante's absence forces a Leicester re-think? I'm not saying they'll crumble, more that Ranieri may tinker / set his team up differently. Will Mahrez stay further back, will Vardy get less chances because Kante's ball recovery ability isn't there. Etc.
