Friday afternoon continues with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s five fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Once again, Sergio Aguero is the clear leader in our poll. After bagging a brace in City’s 4-0 thrashing of Villa, the Argentine has collected over 56% of the votes cast ahead of a trip to a Norwich side that’s shipped 12 goals in their last four at Carrow Road.

Somewhat surprisingly, Harry Kane has been earmarked by just 20% for a trip to Villa. The Tottenham frontman has netted four times in his last quartet of road trips and is now up against a dire defence that’s conceded 15 times in four and have one foot in the Championship.

Below that duo, Riyad Mahrez (7%) and Jamie Vardy (5%) are shaping us as major armband differentials for Leicester’s home encounter with a Newcastle outfit that’s lost six on the bounce away from home. Whilst Vardy has struggled for returns of late, with a goal and assist in five, Mahrez has stepped up his consistency and produced points in five of the last seven Gameweeks, including an 11-point haul at Watford last time out.

Beyond them, the likes of Josh King, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Christian Eriksen, David Silva and Dele Alli are have the potential to spring a surprise, with 2% or less backing so far.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      10 years, 22 days ago

If the Newcastle vs City double gameweek is in 34 I want him in for that (SWA, MCI) and if it isn't I'll be wildcarding in week 33 so can cut my losses. If I do end up selling him on the WC in 33 then I've had three quite good fixtures from him with (lei, SUN, nor). So really from my PoV its limited downside if it doesn't work out but the move has quite a high ceiling if it does work out.

He's certainly not slow. I think the way he runs leads people to believe that. People used to say Berbatov was slow but he used to just glide across the ground. Plus kane''s all round play is excellent and he is more than just a goal scorer.

He drops deep to get involved in the build up which is frustrating from an FPL view, when Spurs are losing or chasing a win and as a Spurs fan I like that because he's not just waiting for someone to make something happen. He wants to make it happen himself.

Berbatov was slow. But his brain and his touch made up for it. One of my all time favorites.

When I say slow I mean like Mertesacker or Huddlestone.

Berba was brilliant in PL. An absolute joy to watch

He played less than 20 minutes when Spurs were 3-0 down v one of the best teams in Europe. Spurs barely had the ball to give it to him.

So City has CL on Tuesday 1-3 in the bag from Ukraine, the job seems pretty done i think. Spurs has EL on Thursday and they got destroyed in Germany (with Kane coming in as a sub), 3-0 and that game is not up for the grab in the 2nd leg imo.

Expected minutes in PL for Kun and Kane? Do we reckon that Spurs lis likely to jump back on the winning train again after 3 straight without victory and do so with a goals galore with Hurricane going mad? Or is this just a GW that you would go with the usual and put the armband on Kun?

I'm chasing 35p gap in ML and i think the leader is going Kun (C) and my Captain choice is leaning towards Kane now, too risky?

    Lloris
    Bertrand Morgan Rangel Dier
    Mahrez Sigurdsson
    Kane Aguero

    Valencia, Ozil, Payet, Lingard, Azpi

    2 FT, 4.0m in bank

Valencia > Vardy is pretty much a dead cert transfer...so

    A) Valencia + Azpi > Vardy + Kompany
    B) Valencia + Lingard > Vardy + King
    C) Valencia + Payet > Vardy + Sterling
    D) Valencia + Ozil > Vardy + Silva

    Appreciate it fellas.

Damn I worked so hard to get a starting XI out for this week and Yaya gets injured.
Worth taking a hit to get him out? Thinking of triple Spurs (buy Eriksen) or Silva.

Think I am going Eriksen over Silva as my Yaya replacement.

    Good move?

I think this article needs some tweaking. It needs to take into account previous fixtures as if one player has had four tough fixtures previously, compared to another who has four easy fixtures, obvious the stats will be skewed. Their needs to be some sort of weighting system.

Same as team defending/attacking stats. Should be weighted in a points system compared to the toughness attributed to each fixture on the season ticker. Doesn't have to be too complex.

      Kane 1 goal
      Alli 1 goal
      Eriksen 1 goal
      Lamela 1 goal

      Bonus - Kane ZERO 😉

Had been planning on bringing in Shaqiri but now Wijnaldum looks tempting...

Though I guess there's no guarantee of a new manager bounce, or an attacking player doing well under Benitez...
