With ten teams set for a pair of fixtures in the upcoming Gameweek, we turn to the members’ section and fire up some custom tables for your perusal.

In the first of a two-part series, we assess those players who have produced a minimum of four attempts on goal over their last four fixtures. In order to qualify for our assessment, the players must also have featured in at least three of their sides’ last seven league fixtures.

    Using BB:
    Darlow Robles
    Simpson Lovren Smalling Bellerin Sakho
    Coutinho Sanchez(c) Ozil KDB Lennon
    Rashford Lukaku Aguero

But I'm concerned about Rashford and KDB mins, so was thinking of KDB & Rashford -> Nasri & Martial for a -4 hit
Not sure if this is worse? Then again, I have issues with Lovren and Sakho as well

KDB is more nailed than Nasri

Would Coutinho & Rashford -> Martial & 5.2k Mid (such as Lanzini) be a better alternative.
Coutinho could also have playing time issues over the next 2/3 weeks due to EL

I like him as an option. Played well vs Leicester.

Martial, Sturridge or Welbeck for the DGW? (To partner Kane and Lukaku)

    Worth a -4 for Gabriel/Sakho to Smalling?

    1. Loðbrók
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

      Martial or Sturridge.
Sturridge play gw35 that can also be a factor.

Can you field 11 in 35 if you get in smalling?

      1. FantasyFooty1985
        • 10 Years

        Mignolet (Ruddy)
        Bellerin Sakho Smalling (Francis, Fuchs)
        Coutinho Sanchez Mahrez Payet (Alli)
        Kane Martial Lukaku

So GW35 FT could swap Martial for a GW 35 starter and play 11.

Concerned about Cout, Sakho and Sturridge minutes with EL though!

          Huth / Simpson 😉

If you can stretch to an Arsenal defender, then that.

I'd do the first for sure then wait and see on Sturridge. Presumably he'll start vs Dormund as it's such a big game, which could mean he'll start on the bench for their first game of the DGW if he's not fit enough to play twice so close together. With the derby coming up straight after, I don't think they'll want to risk him.

DGW34 bench-boosters; think this has been asked before a few days ago, but let's get another count.

If the BB chip didn't exist but you still had your current team, how would your bench look this GW?

Darlow (SWA, MCI), Alli (sto), Mahrez (WHU), Azpi (MCI) here.

    1. Irish Madridista ⭐
      • 15 Years

      Darlow - Mahrez - Coleman - Simpson.

Mornin' IM - at least the initials are the same 🙂

Not expecting much from my bench other than perhaps Alli vs Stoke, but I probably wouldn't have gone for as many DGW players if it wasn't for BB so it should still pay off... hopefully.

Still debating Kane -> Sturridge for free. Looks a decent captain option this GW if he stays fit, plus the added aesthetically pleasing bonus of having a full DGW 11 on the pitch.

        1. Irish Madridista ⭐
          • 15 Years
          9 years, 9 months ago

          Haha exactly! 😀

Kane -> Sturridge could be a genius move, I considered it myself, but ended up going with Martial instead as I needed the funds to upgrade Klose to Koscielny!

Sturridge is risky due to injury / rotation under Klopp but he is consistent as hell, if he plays both games I've no doubt he'll score well.

Disclaimer: I'll be getting Kane back in soon probably.. (as in.. next week)

I think Studge will start vs. Dortmund (has to, surely?), which may mean he'll be on the bench for the first 60 mins or so vs. Bournemouth in preparation for a start in the derby.

If I got him in for Kane, he'd likely be a season-keeper with another DGW coming up. That's the only thing putting me off at the moment - shifting Kane while he's going for Golden Boot is a big call!

Why do I see so many posts hoping that Lukaku does well tonight. Every man and his dog, casuals included will have Lukaku captain this week, so whatever he does has a nil effect on ranking. Ideally for FFS community as a whole it's probably best that the game is a goal fest both ways with Defenders (Dann, Coleman, Delaney) scoring and mids (Bloasie, Lennon, Barkley) assisting. Though Barkley is also so massively owned outside the FFS community that anything he does will probably affect many of us negatively.

I think someone (TM?) said the other day it was around 65 - 70 % of the top 10k have captained him.. EO of around 150%.

Only one other person in my ML has Lukaku so having captained him I will further my lead in it, I'd rather win £100 from that than nothing and finish with a decent OR, I've only started caring about my OR since I got in the top 20k

It has a huge effect on rankings. top10k has his captained and owned by 66% or so. For some its a huge upside. Who the hell wants his captain to blank?

    6. Pasqualinho
      • 16 Years

140% effective ownership - so still worth rooting for if you've captained him. Of course, if you don't have him then you'll want him to blank. If you have him but not captained him then you're a very rare breed and, to be honest, a little strange.

    In your opinion..

How much of FPL is just gambling? How much of it comes down to skill?

There's surely an aspect of gambling in it, are some just consistently lucky? Do those that regularly finish in the top 10k have better instincts? or attention? or better at reading stats/patterns?

    1. RustyBz
      • 10 Years

a lot of it. A lot of "good players" are doing poor this year. All you can do with the skill is try to maximise your luck by picking the best players/rotations/combinations etc but its always gonna come down to luck at the end of the day.

Ville Ronka is on for his 5th consecutive 5k finish or something like that I think though.. There are exceptions to the rule that do well every year and adapt to the different styles required to do well.

      70% skill, 30% luck

I think to win it though, you need a massive amount of luck with almost all of your 50/50 decision over the course of the season paying off.

I think skills is the wrong word. It should be doing homework like in school, you revise your schoolwork, do homework diligently, answer questions with logic to pass an exam - the same you analyze players and team strategies - so it's 'hard work' more than 'skills' involved here.

That said, I think you can get to top 10k with 'hard work' but to be high up at the top, you need lots of luck.

It is very akin to gambling. You try and put yourself in the best position of winning but have no control over what actually happens. I never agree with people referring to it as a 'skill' - it's not skilful at all. Dedication and planning are what gives each individual player and advantage - and luck tops it off.

        Yes, exactly my point above.

Being able to play a guitar is skill. What Ronaldo can do with a football is skill. Choosing a player who scored last week with a good fixture this week is not. It's just planning and diligence.

Dedication and planning are what gives each individual player an advantage... until that one lucky casual that triple captained Tadic for 70 points zooms past you to 1st in the ranks GW38.

I wouldn't say patience is a skill. Reading a fixture list and plotting a profitable course through it? Maybe. But there are so many tools (e.g. this site) that help you do that without too much effort that it's not (imo) correct to call this 'skilful'. I think it was Dod (a poster here but more regular on Triggerlips' site) who summed it up best for me when he said FPL was 80% luck and 20% luck management.

            • 12 Years
            9 years, 9 months ago

I'd flip the 80 and 20 but I get the sentiment. But in my eyes 'luck management' is synonymous with skill. It may not be a difficult skill to acquire with the right motivation (cash leagues etc) but its still there and shows up in the end results.

This topic comes up every year.

There has to be some luck involved of course but there's still a reason some players can finish consistently well.

Ville Ronka - never finished outside top 5k
Jonty has several finishes inside top 10k in a row now I think - will be harder this season now
Someone I follow on Twitter who used to post here also mostly finishes inside top 5k/10k

I think some of it is skill/attention to detail - not getting caught up in the bandwagons that are more for fun than anything else. Consistency is key I guess.

Zophar another who is high up in HoF was saying on Twitter a while back that he'll almost always choose a captain from the top 4 teams (obviously this year has been different in many ways) - doesn't matter how good other teams are being, the top 4 teams are such for a reason that they're consistent.

Whether that continues next season we'll see - if we get another season like this it'll be tough again for sure!

        • 12 Years
        9 years, 9 months ago

How quick/slow was Zophar to realise Leicester and Spurs were top 4 teams this year?

Looks like he captained Vardy in GW13, before that it was a lot of Man City players - KDB and even Bony.

After GW13 there was a mix of Lukaku/Kane too.

He's back in the top 10k again this year.

I've had three 8k finishes in the last three yrs & I barely play it, I spend maybe 30mins on it every wk deciding on transfers/captain & I occasionally check price rises/drops for TV, that's about it. I think there's skill in it but I'm not sure how much.

It's obviously not luck, otherwise you wouldn't get so many people who consistently finish top 10k.

There is probably a direct correlation between a players history and the % they put it down to luck.

This game isn't really that hard. It's just about playing the risk: reward %s in relation to the other people.

As others have said, the more planning and statistical analysis you do the better foundation those decisions will have.

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 16 Years

We get this 'consistently Top 10k' argument a lot. How could you explain those (like Mark, for instance) who have a 200k rank one year, then are placed 42nd the following year, and then down in the 100ks again this time round? These type of player histories are out there too.

Mine is a similarly lumpy history. There are a number of factors. E.g. sometimes you do not have the time to focus on fpl for an entire season as life gets in the way. Or, if you have seen success in a good final rank already then you might become less bothered about taking the low risk options and go for more risky options in pursuit of an even higher rank or more fun.

My point was that there is a level, be it 10k or whatever, that you can probably hit through sensible low risk play. AI will probably be able to do this soon, if not already. To get higher requires a few higher risk choices or ones that fewer people have made.

OK, so overall with my Wildcard I am very happy, just a few concerns with my defence.

    Bellerin - Clyne - Clichy - Darmian - Dann

Plan was to transfer out Dann and Darmian with 2 FTs in GW35, which would leave me with exactly 11 players with a game that week. However, I will now only have 1 FT (Probably Dann to Azpilicueta). With all the uncertainty over Darmian/Clichy, I am now considering getting a West Brom defender for -4 THIS GW, with the hope that he will score 4 points more than Darmian/Clichy and be playable next week.

So my question is, (A) should I do it, and if so (B) who should I transfer in for Darmian?

    BB GW34 team surgery.

I'm worried about rotation, what would you guys do with this:

    Ming/Robles
    Sakho/Darmian/Bell/Gab/Simpson

My mid and strikers are ok.

Worried about Darmian the most, then Gab. What would you guys do? I can't afford Smalling without shipping Ming out for Darlow and downgrading Sakho to Moreno so it would be a -8. Is Rojo a better option? or what else?
