Vincent Kompany picks up another injury as Man City stumble at the Champions League semi-final stage. Tottenham’s Mousa Dembele is charged with violent conduct by the FA for his clash with Diego Costa on Monday night, whilst Liverpool’s Divock Origi is still hopeful of returning from injury before the season is out.

Kompany limps out of City loss

A 1-0 loss in the Bernabeu saw City’s dreams of Champions League glory extinguished at the semi-final stage.

Having fielded a second-string outfit at Southampton on Sunday, Manuel Pellegrini made eight changes to last night’s starting line-up. The likes of Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne, Yaya Toure, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and Vincent Kompany were all named in the first XI, though the latter lasted just ten minutes against Madrid before being forced off with a hamstring problem.

After a hugely disappointing performance in which his team managed just a single shot on target – courtesy of De Bruyne – Pellegrini conceded that Kompany will be assessed today after yet another injury setback.

The Scout Says: With Europe no longer a distraction, Pellegrini can now turn his attentions to Sunday’s crucial home encounter with Arsenal. The City manager’s team sheets may have frustrated us in recent weeks – with De Bruyne starting just two of the last five, for example – but considering that they need three points to overtake the Gunners in third, it seems far more likely that the Chilean will roll out his strongest side this weekend. City’s need to go on the offensive to climb back into the automatic Champions League places could be good news for De Bruyne and Aguero owners, then, whilst at the back, Kompany’s potential absence might not be as much of a setback as anticipated – the Etihad side had conceded just two goals in the previous five league matches without their captain prior to the weekend loss at St Mary’s.

Dembele Charged by FA

Mousa Dembele has been retrospectively charged with violent conduct by the FA for an alleged incident with Diego Costa in Monday’s draw at Chelsea. The Spurs midfielder has until 6pm this evening to respond to the charge.

The FA also went on to suggest that, if found guilty, the Belgian could face an extended period on the sidelines:

“Further, it is alleged the player’s behaviour constituted violent conduct in circumstances where the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient.”

The Scout Says: Given the nature of the incident, it seems very likely that Dembele will play no further part in the remainder of the season. Already deprived of Dele Alli’s services due to suspension, Mauricio Pochettino could be set to face former club Southampton without two of his first-choice picks in the centre of the park. Should Dembele be handed the expected ban, our faith in Harry Kane could take a turn for the worse. Alarmingly, Spurs’ top scorer has netted just once in the nine league matches that the Belgian has failed to start this season, compared to 24 strikes in 27 outings with him in the first XI.

Origi hopeful of Reds’ return

Divock Origi has stepped up his recovery from the ankle injury that forced him off during last month’s Merseyside derby against Everton.

Discussing his fitness with the Reds’ official website, the Belgian refused to rule out a return to action before the end of the season:

“It’s progressing well. It’s been ten days now so I try and improve every day and make steps, we just try and [ensure that] I’m back as quick as possible. My goal is to come back as soon as possible and I just want to go back on the pitch. I think it’s possible but you never know.”

The Scout Says: Judging by his comments, it seems likely that Origi will miss the Reds’ upcoming double Gameweek home encounters against Watford and Chelsea. Whilst Liverpool’s team sheets remain impossible to second-guess right now, the Belgian’s continued absence could strengthen Daniel Sturridge’s chances of starts. Sturridge has been named in the starting XI in six of the last seven – scoring off the bench in the other fixture – and if he’s named amongst the subs against Villarreal later tonight, many may well be tempted to take a punt on a player with five goals and an assist in his last seven.

    The Europe League final is 18th of May. That is three days after gw38. No reason to think that Liverpool players should be rested over the two GW37 games?

    Two Ipswich players in the U17 squad for the Euro's (and another 2 on standby). Although the current team is boring and bang average, at least the future looks bright!

    England U17s: Jared Thompson (Chelsea), Ryan Sandford (Millwall), Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea), Edward Francis (Manchester City), Tolaji Bola (Arsenal), Dujon Sterling (Chelsea), Jaden Brown (Tottenham Hotspur), Morgan Feeney (Everton), Marcus McGuane (Arsenal), Andre Dozzell (Ipswich Town), Dennis Adeniran (Fulham), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham), Reiss Nelson (Arsenal), Ben Morris (Ipswich Town), Joshua Bohui (Brentford), Samuel Shashoua (Tottenham Hotspur), George Hirst (Sheffield Wednesday).

    If you took a hit to bring in HAzard and Carroll would you give one of them TC to almost guarantee making up the points from the hit?? It's on Defoe currently and I have no idea who will score more points but I believe Defoe will probably get 180 mins the other 2 I'm not so sure.

      Makes no difference, the only question is how many points you end up with. This logic doesn't change that

      Having said that, I think they're both better options than Defoe, and Carroll is a much better option than Hazard imo

      1. Cradders

        Yeah it doesn't make much difference really you just want to pick the player who will score highest. Sunderland need at least 4 points from the next 2 I prefer Defoe to Hazard but I'm a little torn between Carroll and Defoe

          I think their need for points and decent defensive prospects make a 1-0 type game more likely, though. And West Ham are just a much more attacking team, have more goals in them. But either could work, gotta go with your gut

    Current team: 1FT, 2.7 itb

    DDG Hart
    TFM Moreno Simpson Bellerin Sakho*
    Sanchez Mane' Iwobi Payet Coutinho
    Martial Lukaku Aguero

    Worth doing Kane + Iwobi + Sakho > Carrol + Hazard + Reid (-8)

    Hazard > Ozil GW38.

    DDG (robles)
    Moreno Cresswell Pva (Rose Gabriel)

    G2g? Take a hit to add a 10th Dgw?

    Currently on a -8 = Dier, Iwobi, Aguero > PVA, Hazard, Carroll, which will leave me with:

    DDG
    Smalling PVA
    Hazard Sanchez Payet (c) Firmino Townsend
    Caroll Defoe Kane

    Bench - Bellerin, Huth, Wollsch

    Do I scrap AOA & take a -12 to get in Cresswell?
    Only 8 DGWs currently too so he would take it to 9... Money no issue so could do Cresswell instead of PVA but seeing consensus on here is PVA is stand out pick...

    Any thoughts welcome!

      Save AOA for GW38 IMO, keep Iwobi he's likely to play against Villa I think. After tonights game decide on whether you can do Dier & Aguero to Sturridge and PvA

    Making changes for the upcoming DGW, and I have a little dilemma, so please help me out!
    a) Iwobi + Vardy --> Noble + Carroll (-8, but 2 DGW'ers)
    b) Kane --> Sturridge (-4)
    c) Iwobi + Kane --> Willian + Martial (-8)
    d) Vardy --> Martial/ Carroll (-4)
    Not afraid of taking a hit or two, I just want some points 🙂

      Would avoid Liverpool players as too much rotation risk - maybe see how they fair tonight...

      Leicester players have probably boozing for about 36 hours solid now - not sure how they will turn up against Everton! West Ham are a solid bet i think.

      Consider Defoe if dont have already.

        Thanks Forza (and AB), this is absolutely fantastic! 😀 This bit made me LOL in the office.

        "The racing stripe

        This approach can also be called the power stripe because that’s what it’s really about, showcasing power. When you have a big defender, midfielder and striker from the same team then why not line those bad-boys up? The royal blue racing stripe of John Terry, Hazard and Diego Costa for example was pretty devastating in gw18. One of the beauties of the racing stripe is that most formations accommodate it. You don’t even need to call it a stripe. For example one of my dreams is Wolves get promoted this season so next year I can make a fish finger sandwich out of Spurs, Wolves and Swansea players."

        Very few managers back what they see from the game. I love that.

      Oh, erm, I like to have a good right-back, good centre-half and good left back... then good right AM/winger and so on and so forth.
      This week is a bit of a problem, unless Toby is back and I bench Fuchs over Bellerin. The rest is okay as have 2 RAM/CM and 2 LAM/CM especially as the "middle" 2 are both blue and Kane is in line with Toby. Ideally...

      ------------------Robles-----------------
      Bellerin Alderweireld van Aanholt
      Townsend Mahrez Hazard Payet
      --------Aguero Kane Carroll---------

      I'm a rank junkie and have no shame in that.
      I do my own homework, MOTD mostly, I do believe in stats but you can't beat watching players, granted the sample is minute and sometimes I'm amazed at how many people forget to look at the players (scores) leaderboard.
      I tend to keep it simple, do the obvious get players in for their hot streaks and lose them when necessary eg Mahrez.
      I also believe like Mark did with Aguero that you can go without players for the whole year to a point, on paper he was right about Sergio-you just need to have the striker that is matching/Outscoring him at the time eg Ighalo, I've never once owned Toby this year and kept 'meaning to get him' you don't have to be Maverick, but you do need to get ahead of the curve at the right time-There's plenty of reward in a solid middle of the road style too.

        This. a lot.

        I went with Dier instead of Toby when I WCed in GW9 (both were similarly priced at that time) - it was a failed experiment but that's how I play the game.

        Special mention has to be given to Snake Juice - he's a big lover of MNF and one captained Bale just for that reason and got highly rewarded. Talk about some style of play.

    God, I'm struggling here....

    At the moment, I've got

    Robles/Migs

    Darmian/Delaney/Bellerin/Simpson/ Moreno

    Payet/ Ozil/ Sanchez/ Lingaard/ Firmino

    Aguero/ Kane/ Carroll

    The best I can come up with is:

    A) Aguero + Lingaard -----> Defoe + Hazard
    B) Aguero + Ozil -------------> Costa + Hazard
    C) Something better

    What do you think? Any help very very much appreciated.

      A)

      But given the choice I'd do Kane + Ozil > Defoe and Haz

    C) Lukaku ?

    Why was Lukaku benched last week..

    I'd be worried he's out of favour or itching to leave so won't get too much game time over the DGW.

    Thoughts?

      the game wasn't important so he decided to give the new striker a run out as he hasnt had much game time.

      I'd imagine Lukaku will start but be subbed off early around 60 mins both games

        I'd steer clear regardless though as Everton aren't playing well at the moment and Martinez is likely getting sacked
