With Asmir Begovic departing for Chelsea last summer, the 2015/16 campaign was always destined to be a breakthrough season for Stoke’s Jack Butland. The England international had long been earmarked as the Bosnian’s long-term replacement following a £3.5m move from Birmingham in January 2013, and established himself as one of the leading goalkeepers in the top flight this time around. Butland’s season was curtailed by an ankle injury suffered during England’s 3-2 victory over Germany in March, but such was the impression he made up to that point, he takes the goalkeeper spot in our Team of the Season with 33% of the vote.

The Statistics

A popular choice for many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses heading into the campaign due to a lowly 4.5 price tag, Butland struggled to live up to the pre-season hype, failing to register a clean sheet in his first seven matches.

Mark Hughes’ decision to call upon Philipp Wollscheid to help shore up the defence saw the Potters record consecutive shut-outs in away matches against Aston Villa and Swansea. The Stoke rearguard was then further boosted once captain Ryan Shawcross returned from a back injury, racking up a further six clean sheets between Gameweeks 11 and 18. By that stage, Butland’s price in FPL had already risen to 5.1, and peaked at 5.3 just a few weeks later. He only managed a further two clean sheets in his final 13 appearances, though, before injury struck in Berlin.

Butland ended the season with ten shut-outs from his 31 league appearances, with an equal split of five at home and five on the road. Up until he suffered that fractured ankle while on international duty, he led all goalkeepers for saves (102), which was a crucial element to his popularity this season – indeed, Butland earned at least one save point on 18 occasions. The Stoke stopper averaged 3.3 saves per game, which is on a par with Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, the highest scoring goalkeeper in FPL this season, and compares favourably to David de Gea (2.4), who finished second in our vote.

Perhaps the most telling statistic is that the Potters have failed to keep a clean sheet in the seven matches since Butland has been sidelined, conceding an average of 2.6 goals per game, compared to just 1.2 goals per game when Butland played.

With 14 bonus points also accrued, Butland served up 4.3 points per game in 2015/16 – put into perspective, Glen Johnson (3.7) was the only other Stoke defensive regular to average more than 3.0.

A total of 132 points placed the keeper second only to Marko Arnautovic (165) at the Britannia, despite missing the final seven league outings through injury.

The Prospects

Butland’s ankle complaint cruelly ruled him out of Euro 2016, but the Potters stopper has recently done away with his crutches, and has his eyes set on a return ahead of pre-season, tweeting:

“On the way back from seeing the surgeon, walked in with crutches, walked out without them… But all focus now on being fully fit for pre-season.”

That will be music to the ears of Mark Hughes, with confidence in the Stoke backline likely to be largely restored upon his return to action. The injury problems suffered by Shawcross may also mean that the Potters manager looks to enter the market for another centre-back, which could also further boost the prospects of Butland ahead of the new season.

The downside, though, is that Butland will surely be subject to a price hike from his original valuation of 4.5, with a likely shift to 5.0 in line with options such as West Ham’s Adrian and Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski. This will take him out of the budget bracket and lessens his appeal for those who prefer to select a pair of cheap rotation options between the sticks.

Ultimately, it’s debatable whether Butland will remain in the forefront of our Fantasy thinking as we look for alternative 4.5-priced options in goal. Stoke’s regular backline options all seem likely to start the following season at 5.0, though if they fail to up their resilience – only Everton and the bottom six shipped more – Hughes’ defence may struggle to offer us value for money in 2016/17, regardless of Butland’s exploits between the posts.

How many goals do we expect ManU to score? Of those, how many do you expect from Martial (assuming he plays)?

No crystal ball, but ManU hasn't been prolific.

You and I will experience a similar fate, so I wish you well. Very well.

I would have brought Defoe . He's had a great year at Sunderland , Rashford is under enough pressure at United already it feels like Walcott going to the 2006 World Cup rather than Rooney going to Euro 2004 tbh.

Not sure about that.. don't get me wrong Defoe is a top striker always has been but at his age he isn't the future.. this 5th striker position is going to be no more than an impact sub at best Rashford has shown a lot of potential so i can see the merits in taking him and giving him some time in the friendlies at least..

Wayne coming out and saying he wants to eventually play the Scholes role (that England seem to be crying out for).. along with Vardy / Kane having great seasons... helps Roy to make that big change imo.

                    Still, then you have
                    Sturridge / Vardy / Kane / Rashford

I'd personally bring Carroll instead of Rashford as a "secret weapon" type player but I get why Rashford was chosen.

Defoe could have been the most effective impact sub in a semi final though I think.. Especially on a high after keeping Sunderland up.

Like i said to Jarvish if you want to revert to desparation tactics and lump the ball up to the big man in the latter stages of a game then by all means bring big Andy.. a tactic that has been ridiculed this season after LVG using Fellaini that way on a number of occasions.. all of a sudden that's good enough for the English national team.. not for me

Haha yeah I getcha, BUT... I don't think the England side is as good as United's, even with LvG at the Manchester helm.

So if anything I think it's more acceptable for England to revert to it, as they don't have great options, the fact that it's a choice between:

                        A) Big lump (Carroll)
                        B) Old Veteran back from MLS (Defoe)
                        C) Unproven 18 year old brought into the United side due to other injuries (Rashford)

..shows the lack of quality imo.

Going with option C is just choosing a wildcard, which could work out if Rashford is a revelation on the big stage, but that can only happen if Roy follow's through and gives him gametime over the more established lads.

When you put it like that and that's pretty much spot on then it's c for me.. Rashford remains unproven but he has taken to premier league football like a duck to water not only knocking in a number of goals against top sides but playing in a team that creates very little.. and it's not tap ins he's scoring either he's making his own goals.. Defooe isn't doing anything Rashford isn't and Carroll simply can't do what Rashford can.. But it is what it is he may be relying on a an injury to get in the team

Not sure what to make of it tbh.. there's no doubting the kid has been a revelation since he broke onto the scene and there's nothing to suggest he won't take his chance at international level just like he has done at club level.. I fear it could be a case of naming him giving a couple of cameos and then dropping before the euros start which isn't good for anyone

Yeah you could say that about any team in 90% of the qual groups, to finish with an average of 0.3 goals against suggests to me they should be taken seriously.

The group was the worst one by a mile, didn't face a single team that has a decent attack. They did play 0-0 against Spain in a friendly so I'm monitoring them though.

Anyone have any insight into the whole James Rodriguez saga at Real Madrid? Zidane doesn't seem to like him and he hasn't been in great form even when he plays, but there's lots of talk (from the Star / Mirror / Trash etc) of Madrid selling him for 60ish million..

Can't find anything concrete as to why he's supposedly dropped so far..

    1. ★Kuntheman★

He seems like the sort of player Zidane would love. Maybe Zidane is the one with the ego.

Maybe.. Not sure why he's clashing with James though over Ronaldo / Ramos / Pepe / Kroos and other big egos floating about the club.

James has always been quiet enough for a "superstar"..

Really hope this isn't the case, I love James.. but yeah you could be right 🙁

Maybe he sees him as too much competition for Isco, Vasquez and Jese who are more home-grown, but I don't think I like that train of thought at all 🙁

Both playoff 2nd legs are likely to get Sheff. Wed and Hull to the playoff final.

Lot of people here have forgotten that DDG is a CS away from the Golden Glove and Lvg never rests his GK so he should be expected to start. Also Fosu-Mensah is injured so do not expect him to cover at cb. Smalling has a good chance of starting with Jones or it would be the other way around with Blind and Jones starting.

Yes agreed but Lvg is not the kind who would play all the reserve players. As a Utd fan I'm expecting something like this:-

        DDG
        Varela Jones Blind CBJ
        Carrick/Morgan Herrera
        Januzaj Lingard Depay
        Rashford/Martial

He never seems to play Perreira no matter how well he plays.

WORLD'S TOUGHEST FOOTBALL QUIZ! We think you'll find this pretty difficult . . . obviously: https://t.co/v35di1EQSv

2nd highest ever rank, around 11k, but expecting a drop tomorrow as I only have Smalling. First time in 5 years I haven't won my main ML (he brought in Giroud, there was nothing I could have done). Anyway, I won't be playing Fantasy Euros and as it stands I won't be playing FPL, maybe the summer will change my mind but i doubt it.

So this is, from me, at the very least, a see you later, in all likelihood, a very big adieu

You could have bought Giroud tbf 😉 . So many regular posters leaving it's not going to be half as much fun next year . Best of luck and I hope you will come back at some point.
