After kicking off our Euro 2016 team analysis coverage with a look at Albania yesterday, we focus our attentions on hosts France. Didier Deschamps’ side get the tournament up and running on Friday June 10 with a clash against Romania at 8pm before squaring up to Albania four days later at 8pm and concluding their Group A involvement by going up against Switzerland on June 19 at 8pm.

Recent Friendlies

The hosts approach the tournament in fine fettle, having won seven of their previous eight friendlies. Included in that run are triumphs over the likes of Portugal, Serbia, Germany, Holland and Russia, with a 2-0 loss at Wembley the only setback.

Deschamps’ side have found the net at least twice in six of those eight occasions, though have been less convincing at the back and mustered just three clean sheets, which includes a 4-0 win over minnows Armenia.

Most Appearances Raphael Varane, Antoine Griezmann (8), Blaise Matuidi, Olivier Giroud, Anthony Martial (7), Hugo Lloris, Bacary Sagna, Moussa Sissoko, Paul Pogba, Morgan Schneiderlin (6), Patrice Evra, Yohan Cabaye, Lassana Diarra (5), Laurent Koscielny, Andre Pierre Gignac (4)

Most goals Olivier Giroud (5), Blaise Matuidi (3), Andre Pierre Gignac, Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann (2)

Most assists Antoine Griezmann, Anthony Martial (4), Blaise Matuidi, Bacary Sagna (2)

The Key Targets

Given that Albania and Romania, in particular, have failed to impress in the final third, France will be confident of picking up a couple of clean sheets over the initial group stages.

As the only player to start each of his nation’s last eight friendlies, Raphael Varane is priced higher (6.5) than any of his defensive team-mates in the official Uefa game but the Real Madrid man’s thigh injury absence bring cheaper options to the fore. Whilst Laurent Koscielny (6.0) was expected to start regardless of Varane’s availability, the likes of Eliaquim Mangala (5.0) or Jeremy Mathieu (4.5) now have the chance to battle it out for the other central defensive berth.

Such a scenario diminishes the appeal of full-backs Patrice Evra and Bacary Sagna at 6.0 apiece, though the City man has chipped in with a couple of assists in recent outings.

Deschamps is expected to set his side up in a 4-3-3 set-up, with Blaise Matuidi and Paul Pogba nailed-on in the centre of the park. Priced at 7.0 in Uefa, the former produced three goals and two assists over those featured friendlies and his all-action style of play should help pick up the Draft Kings points for crosses and successful tackles.

Pogba, meanwhile, rolls up on the back of eight strikes and 12 assists for Juventus in 2015/16. Despite failing to play a part in any of France’s goals, he remains a very viable option at 8.5 in Uefa and still managed more attempts than Matuidi during the featured period.

Anthony Martial looks to have cemented a role on the left in recent matches. Listed as a midfielder in the Uefa game, he’s the priciest option in the centre of the park amongst Deschamps’ charges and sets you back 9.0 – the United man did provide four assists, though.

Antoine Griezmann is Deschamps’ preferred pick on the right flank, though his classification as a forward in the Uefa game is frustrating. Costing 10.0, he bagged two goals and four assists in the last eight and is also France’s main man for dead-ball duties, particularly when Dimitri Payet is not on the pitch.

Up top, Olivier Giroud (8.5 in Uefa) is favourite to be handed the lone striker berth in light of Karim Benzema’s enforced absence. The Arsenal frontman appeared in all seven of France’s recent friendlies and produced more goals (five) and attempts on goal than any team-mate.

The Long Shots

The France boss has a number of quality options at his disposal should he opt to chop and change his selections.

It seems odd to classify Dimitri Payet as a punt but with one start out of the last eight friendlies, the West Ham playmaker is far from a secure pick. Nonetheless, Payet still bagged a goal and assist in two recent appearances, whilst he’s also afforded a fair share of corners and free kicks when on the pitch. At 8.0, though, he’s perhaps too pricey a gamble for many.

Lassana Diarra and N’Golo Kante are likely to battle it out for the final central midfield berth. Although their Uefa prices (6.0 and 5.5 respectively) are relatively kind, the pair may offer more appeal in the Draft Kings game, which rewards defensive actions such as successful tackles and interceptions.

Bayern’s Kingsley Coman was a late addition to the fold. Handed his debut in November, the on-loan Juventus wide man may have to rely on minutes off the bench but is versatile enough to play on either flank and, at just 6.5, is joint-top for assists in this season’s Champions League. Coman’s pace and ability to draw fouls against tiring defences could boost his points potential in the Draft Kings game.

Andre Pierre Gignac is likely to play second fiddle to Giroud but should still earn minutes off the bench. Like Coman, he could feasibly start the last group match against the Swiss if France secure their passage to the knockout stages after the first two rounds of fixtures. Gignac has been named in the provisional squad but has yet to be added to the Uefa game.

Upcoming Friendlies

France versus Cameroon (May 30), France versus Scotland (June 4)

All thoughts on this EURO squad are appreciated 🙂 especially because of the lack of knowledge on my part

    Patricio (Mucha)
Dragovic - Alba - Schar (Hector, Denayer)
    Alaba - Alli - Mak - Perisic (R. Silva)
    Muller - Griezmann - Lewandowski

    Cheers from the US!

What do ye think of this lot? 🙂

    Patricio - Randolph
    Ramos - Hector - Schar - Dragovic - Denayer
    Siggy - Perisic - Alaba - Mak - RSanches
    Lewan - Muller - Janko

Starting to reconsider Ronaldo but it would realistically mean BIG downgrades in defence.

How so? Who needs to go for who?

        Not sure I trust Dier..

I know Schar is injured at the moment but he may be fit..

Matej could be a good enabler?

Nothing wrong with that defence. If Schar is out easy swap to Lichtsteiner.

whats your aim with that defence, clean sheets? Better options available than Randolph and denayer and cheaper ones than Ramos and schar.

I really don't like Denayer. Want to ship him but not sure who's a better option out of the 4.5m options, I've seen a few going for players from poor teams, and my knowledge of the defensive side of Eastern European football is lacking when it comes to clean sheets. Any suggestions?

Randolph is biased and staying put, had Sommer in originally but couldn't go without a single Irishman and we've been solid enough at the back under O'Neill.

Ramos WAS Alba, but I suppose if I'm going to downgrade Alba, I may as well downgrade him properly and not by just 0.5m.

I disagree regarding Schar, if he's fit he's in my squad.

      Limbersky-Kadlec-Sivok-Kadebarek

Suchy (CB) got a red card on their last qualifier so I assume he is suspended. Prochazka (another CB) played a lot in qualifying and is only 4.0 so might be worth watching. LB seems to be a bit uncertain, Gebre Selassie, Limbersky, Novak and Pudil have all played there recently.

yeah I reckon Nani could do well. has been very good for Portugal of late. This is only a draft anyway so open to changes of course.

midfield is solid to me, only issue is prob Alli but think for the price it's worth a risk

    2. Lucy.
      • 12 Years

I don't like Matuidi or Nani - see the latter's scoring record in qualifying. Bruno Alves is doubtful - could lose out to Carvalho (most likely) or Fonte.

      1. djenzio
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

I thought BA was nailed but he can easily become Carvalho. I doubt Fonte will start but hope he does at 4.5 would be a bargain!

I can see why people wouldn't like Nani but just have him there for now, will prob change him out once I see some more friendlies. Matuidi could be great, good value and gets some decent attacking returns, nailed on too.

    A) Ramos + Joao Mario
    B) Koscielny + Alli
    C) Pepe? + Grosicki (have Schar/Lichtsteiner and Hector at 5.5m)
    D) Dier + Hamsik (have Dragovic at 5m)

Basically, 12.5m for a defender and a mid 😀 Any advice appreciated - will take alternative suggestions at the same price points.

He has only recently got to the team and has only played two games on the right wing where we assume he is gonna play at. One assist in 135 minutes is not that bad considering those things.

I get my data from transfermkt and he's played plenty with 1 assist and yes I get your point about position change but he's STILL played more than 135 mins, why can't you admit you've made a mistake? We're all friends here!?!

You've misunderstood LWM - he's saying that Joao's played 135 mins at RW and got an assist, which he believes to be where he'll play at the Euros. He thus doesn't think the other minutes are statistically significant.

Well, Vrsaljko seems like a risk. Denayer should cover Kompany.
            Maybe:

I do, but it's close and tough to call. Mangala might be the very reason France struggle for CS's, or he could prove excellent value.

Alli vs Fabregas is a toss up. Cesc is the better player in a better team, but will he play every game? How will Alli fit into the England setup?

Sorry I'm not being very helpful.

What is your wildcard strategy and why?

Play on 2 gameweeks and wildcard before gw3?

Wildcard gw 5 and make room for the teams that have something to fight torwards?

After 1st game. Form over fixtures and I'll likely have picked people who were hopeless in the first game.

....and then give up on the team after your second picks also fail?

        That's my plan.

I'm hoping that form will be sustained over a short period, can't be arsed to look at this statisitically for Euros as I'm only in one £5 league.

Yup, I think this seems like a sensible plan 🙂 I don't think I'll hit on much gold with my first draft, and perfectly ready to rip it up, having hedged my bets with the manual subs in the first round.

No strategy for the 1st one.. Plan a team for the first half of the season and try not to use it. I never go into the season with a 1 week team or a 3 week team, I think it's madness.

2nd one, obviously always save for a DGW now.

          Haha, silly me.

I'll stick to my same answer of no strategy then.. Hopefully my team will all be perfect and save me until the knockouts and then I'll use it in the quarters or semis 😉

Regarding wc in the eurofantasy game. Does the below quote mean that wc will be activated automatically if we take a hit?

"The wildcard is played when confirming transfers that deduct points and can't be cancelled once played."

    1. GoonerByron
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 6 months ago

I don't think so, I think it means you can't play it until you've made transfers that cost at least 1 hit. You can't play your WC when you've only made 1 transfer and had a FT anyway.

They have a really funny way of writing their rules.

      1. Sebastes
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

This is what I assumed as well, but they really make their rules subject to interpretation...

Well, shouldn't really need to take a hit anyways

Anyone playing the Sun euro game? - first time playing it season just gone, noticed it seems more rewarding having the player who gets 'Starman' than someone who actually scores, Daley Blind got a stupid amount of points, any ideas what euro 2016 players could do well for stamen candidates? (no real idea what factors score well for the ratings, crossing?)

    cheers.

It's massively opinion based as per the reporter from their paper who's 'reporting' on that game. Their ratings are a mess a lot of the time, I remember Rooney being awful in a game early in the season and getting Star Man.. Also remember R Rod playing out of his skin + getting 2 assists in the last World Cup and he got a 6 when there were no assists in the game so he got a 0.

        • 16 Years

Yeah its awful, only playing it as the people at work have set up a cash league, defiantly seems they have there favourites who get rated whatever, Clyne was another one last season who would get rated a 7 where the rest of the back 4 would score 5's. I might go with the logic that Blind was taking corners and the reporter liked that?! - defenders who take corners at the euros anyone?

        Cheers.

It's actually OPTA based now and no longer down to the Sun reporter-

NEW THIS YEAR: Assists and Stats based Ratings. Yep, you read it right. Dream Team has rocketed into the 21st century and produced an OPTA stats based mechanism to measure a player’s performance and award them a rating out of 10 and Star Man. Sun Football reporters can put their feet up and you can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Blind bosses the stats and will be gold when he is listed as a defender in FPL next year (if Jose plays him).

Oh right? I did actually notice a report in the paper praising a player (forgot who), when the dream team rating went against him the evening before he got a 6 or something, so makes sense really - any idea who could boss the euros with these opta stats then?! haha

          cheers.

Hi guys, how risky would you rate the following picks:

De Gea (5.5) - surely Spain's first choice keeper now?
Juanfran (5.5) - competition from Carvajal?
Matel (4.0) - competition from Sapunaru?
Eliseu (5.0) - competition from Guerreiro?

Any you definitely wouldn't go with?

    1. JLAEST
      • 11 Years

Eliseu is a risk, but a small one. Even though Guerreiro is better, the national team coach seems oblivious to it. Depends on friendlies though.

    Lloris
    Mangala, Juanfran, Dier, Schar
    Fabregas, Perisic, Ozil
    Muller, Morata, Giroud

    Almer, Denayer, Alaba, Joao Mario

Going with De Gea and downgrading Dier to a 4.5 would enable Ozil > Reus, but I'm not sure that'd be better

    First draft finished. Opinions?

    Sommer/Patricio
    Dragovic/Hector/Mathieu/Smalling/Djorou
    Alaba/Dzsudzsak/Mak/Grosicki/Perisic
    Giroud/Muller/Ronaldo

A bit worried about the defence tho.
