Next up in our analysis of the Euro 2016 contenders is Iceland. Under the duel management of Lars Lagerback and Heimir Hallgrimsson, their tournament gets underway with a clash against Group F favourite Portugal on Tuesday June 14 at 8pm before they face Hungary four days later at 5pm and Austria on Wednesday June 22 at 5pm.

Road to Qualification

Iceland arrive in France as runners-up of qualifying Group A after finishing two points behind the Czech Republic. In a table that also included the likes of Turkey and Holland, the Scandinavians won six and drew two of their ten fixtures, beating the Dutch both home and away as they secured qualification with two matches to spare.

Despite a run of tricky opponents, they scored on 17 occasions and failed to find the net just twice. At the back, Iceland were impressively resilient – conceding only six times, they collected six clean sheets.

The Iceland managers are sticklers for a 4-4-2 formation and tend to rely on the same batch of tried and trusted regulars – they used just 20 players over qualifying, the joint-fewest tally of any team.

Since the turn of the year, however, their form over friendlies has been somewhat patchy, winning three – against Finland (1-0), Greece (3-2) and Lichtenstein (4-0 last night) and losing on four occasions. This saw them defeated by United Arab Emirates (1-2), United States (2-3), Denmark (1-2) and Norway (2-3), with just two clean sheets accrued in their last 11 fixtures.

Most Appearances Karl Arnason, Birkir Bjarnason, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, Ragnar Sigurdsson, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Ari Freyer Skulason (10), Jon Bodvarsson, Aron Gunnarsson, Hannes Halldorsson (9), Birkir Saeversson (8), Johann Gudmundsson, Emil Hallfresson (7)

Most goalsGylfi Sigurdsson (6), Kolbeinn Sigthorsson (3), Birkir Bjarnason, Aron Gunnarsson (2)

Most assists Ari Freyer Skulason (3), Birkir Bjarnason (2)

The Key Targets

With six strikes to his name over qualifying, Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson carries his nation’s main threat in the final third. The playmaker arrives off the back of 11 goals and four assists in the Premier League last term and leads the way for shots and efforts on target for Iceland. Priced at 8.0, Sigurdsson – who is number one for dead-ball duties – also created more chances than any team-mate despite earning just a single assist in qualifying. Stationed in a central midfield berth, he also led the way for successful tackles, which heightens his appeal in the DraftKings game. Sigurdsson currently sits in 4% of teams and is the only Iceland player with more than 1% ownership.

Striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson offers a secure option up front with a very respectable scoring record on the international stage. Although he scored just three times on the road to France, the Nantes frontman has netted 20 times in 39 appearances for Iceland, including a strike against Lichtenstein last night. At a price of 7.0, he fired more efforts inside the box than Sigurdsson over qualifying.

Birkir Bjarnason grabbed two goals and as many assists from his role on the left wing during the qualifiers. Priced at 6.5 in Uefa, he offers a reasonable dual threat and produced double-figures for both efforts on goal and chances created during his ten appearances in qualifying.

Left-back Ari Skulason looks the likeliest source of points at both ends of the pitch. Second to Sigurdsson for cross and chances created, he bagged more assists (three) than any Iceland player in qualifying and also fired more attempts on goal than any defensive team-mate. At a price of 5.5, though, some may find him a little pricey.

The Long Shots

Aron Gunnarsson (6.5) found the net on a couple of occasions and produced ten attempts on goal in qualifying – only three players manager more. The Cardiff midfielder could also be one to monitor for DraftKings – he sat in the top three for successful tackles and interceptions.

Alfred Finnbogason comes in at just 5.5 in Uefa after starting just one of the qualifiers. Having featured in the first XI in each of the last two friendlies, he’s picked up in form and bagged a goal and assist against Lichtenstein last night – given that Iceland have scored at least twice in four of their last five, he could appeal for those looking to take a punt on a budget striker.

At the back, a first clean sheet in six attempts coincided with the return of Hannes Halldorsson (5.0) between the posts on Tuesday. First-choice keeper during qualifying, he has now recovered from injury and his re-installment to the XI raises major question marks over the pitch time of cheaper (4.5) Ogmundur Kristinsson, who had started six straight friendly in Halldorsson’s absence. For those unwilling to gamble on the keeper situation, Sverrir Ingi Ingason sets you back 4.5 and has started the last three at centre-half, scoring on two of those occasions.

I'd love Bellerin to score - would spring loads of doubt and would worry every Juanfran picker!

I think the doubts over Juanfran being nailed on here is madness. Why wouldn't he be, Bellerin wasn't even supposed to be in the squad.

People will rave about how great he is when he wins epl in first

Reality is Big Sam can win the league with the team below

It looks stellar. Add a good defense, signing Laporte and maybe Bellerin or Rodriguez, and it's set for a great run.

Don't like Auba at LW, could see it being a 4-4-2 with KDB and Silva given freedom like how Nasri and Silva had under Mancini.

As much as I can't stand Pep, especially now when he's City's manager, he didn't make huge signings when he took care of Barca. In fact, he got rid of the likes of Deco, Ronaldinho, and promoted i.e. Busquets. At Bayern, he managed to get Lewandowski for free and Real Madrid alone probably spent 3 times as much money as Pep did at Bayern. He's one of the best in this job, so players want to join the party - simples.

I've read a few posts and comments lately (not just on this site) stating that clean sheets in the group stage of a tournament are rare to come by based on stats from Euro 2012 and WC 2014. And I feel like someone has to point out that for Euro 2012 particularly, there was 16 really good teams, whereas this time around, 24 teams has qualified, and amongst them are some teams that would have never been close to qualifying if there was to be 16 teams for this tournament aswell.

For example, I expect France and Switzerland to rack up clean sheets, as in a 16-team-tournament, both Romania and Albania would absolutely have been absent. Nor will I be surprised if Hungary, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Turkey and a couple of other teams struggle for goals aswell. The reason why matches such as France-Romania and Portugal-Hungary is taking place in a Euro tournament is only because there are 24 teams. Of course, with 16 teams and Germany and Portugal, France and England and Spain and Italy facing off in the group stage, clean sheets will be few and far between.

If so, that's an amazing signing...but I have no clue where he'll fit in. Expected a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3, now looking like a 4-4-2

Doubt it will be a 422. If there's one thing Pep is consistent with, it's with the desire to own the midfield.

My guess would be Aub on the left (like Villa and Henry) in a 433.

But what you get most from Pep, is tactics beyond convention. In the German cup final against BvB for example, he played a 3331!

Will be interesting viewing no doubt.

I'm thinking way too conventionally. Could see the Henry-Villa thing happening with Aubameyang. He actually could really replicate Henry at Barcelona, similar players. Either way we're all in for a ride 🙂

What, cause he was taken off at half time? So now Ramos isn't nailed aswell or what?

They're the only two in this starting lineup to have just come into the squad after the CL-final, and they're both taken off at half time. Juanfran is still nailed to me, the doubts surrounding him on here is absolutely crazy.

Bellerin is impressive to be fair

Just worrying taking a gamble on a 5.5m defender that should be the core of your defence. I don't think he's nailed but I guess he's still ahead of Bellerin unless something changes Del Bosque's mind from now until their 1st match

3000% nailed, Bellerin is no way near Juanfran. I though that Mario Gaspar would be picked over Bellerin as Carvajals replacement.

Are you a fan of a Premier League club and jealous of Arsenal's right back? Because that it is a ridiculous statement, with a strong hint of salt. 😛

Bellerin is an exceptional RB, and the reason questions are being asked is because he was very impressive in Spain's last two games. Before that, he wouldn't have had a chance, and even now, a start is extremely unlikely, but he is not far off Juanfran and he has shown enough quality to put him under a bit of pressure.

Do you only follow PL? i Rate both Juanfran, Carvajal AND Gaspar higher than Bellerin.

Yes, Bellerin is a great footballer, but he wasn't even supposed to be in the team for the Euros - a tournament Spain qualified to with Juanfran being the RB to play the most minutes by far. What we think of Bellerin is irrelevant when its Del Bosque picking the team, and I just see no real indication that Juanfran won't start ahead of Bellerin.

I wonder if the talks went something like

"Hi BVB, we'd like to talk about buying Aubameyang"
    "Right" BEEP
    "Hello, BVB.... Hello"

    Unlikely sadly

Sorry if this has already been asked:
Assuming both start, would it be wise to captain Giroud or Payet?

I'd just choose myself going with my gut, it's the first game, plenty of more opportunities if it doesn't work out.

no idea - I've decided it's only worth getting one captain-worthy player from each team to open up my captaincy options a bit. Got rid of Ozil to get Draxler because I already have Muller who I'll captain every day he plays. That's one reason why I only have one French attacker, who happens to be Payet. So I choose Payet. 😀

    Sommer / Patricio
    Dier / Hector / Juanfran / Rami / Fuchs
Alli / KdB / Fabregas / Junuzovic / Joao Mario
    Giroud / Muller / Shaqiri

    Good enough?

Maybe I'm biased, but the 2011/2012 season was my favorite season. City clawing back from an eight point deficit, Kompany's header in the derby, Agueroooo...what a story.

    Patricio - Kozacik
    Juanfran - Schar - Giaccherini - Dragovic - Denayer

Hey guys, just singed up after a few months of lurking. I created this team a couple of weeks ago and now realise I need to do something about my defence given how things are looking now.

    Team (no cash left):
    Almer, Sommer
    Dragovic, Eliseu, Juanfran, Denayer, Sapunaru
    Fabregas, Kroos, Matuidi, Perisic, Weiss
    Giroud, Lewandowski, Muller

With Eliseu's place in doubt I was considering switching him to Dier, in which case I might switch out Almer for Patricio to give me some Portuguese coverage in defence. Anyone care to give me some advice on those moves and any others worth considering at the back?

I'd be tempted to change Lewandowski for Milik to free up funds as could be much better value for money. I'd switch the keeper. Also look into Sommer as read somewhere he didn't start in last friendly so maybe consider Schar or Rodriguez for Swiss cover and attacking potential at the back? Unconvinced by Kroos with Germany's front 4 likely to share the points (punt on Draxler or the safer pick of Ozil?) Is Weiss worth more than Mak? Looks like your miissing coverage in French defence and Belgium attack. Don't know anything about Sapunaru.

Thanks, yeah I figured Lewandowski would have to go in order to improve elsewhere. A shame since I reckon he'll definitely get a couple of goals in the group stage. Thought Kroos might be a good shout for assists considering his stats for completed passes, but I suppose he might be sitting a bit too deep for that and just end up as the guy who assists the player getting the assist. Is Sommer's place really in doubt? Thought they were likely just giving their backup a run out in the last game.

I had the same situation with Lewandowski. I'm not sure with regards to Sommer but I were an international manager I would play my first choice keeper if possible on the eve of a major tourney. Probably why I'm not an international manager though. Just bought it up as a noteworthy point.

    Hopefully next season's City team:

    --------------------Hart----------------------
    Bellerin-Kompany-Laporte-Rodriguez
    Gundogan----Fernandinho----Kroos
    Aubameyang-Aguero-De Bruyne

I think 8 out of 11 of this lineup will be in the squad next season.

I know and it's the same story every season. Everyone expects their club almost everyone. But it doesn't turn out like that. Signing 3 good players in a transfer window is usually a success. Can't change the whole team. Plus isn't there a home grown players rule too for all of this to happen?

Yeah, suddenly plenty of strikers that looks really good options (Kane, Vardy @ Arsenal, Zlatan), with more doubts over the premium midfielders such as Sanchez and Hazard. KDB could be the way to go for City cover, but we may need two or even three next season..

Anyways, what the heck am I getting myself into, looong way to go!

Hi guys, I havn't posted since FPL finished but I have a question.

Paddypower have a promo for the euros where you back a Top Goalscorer for the tournament for £25 and every time they score you get a £5 free bet.

So, Who would you go for? Ronaldo, Muller, Griezman? Etc etc

Lots of responses would be awesome!

Koke hasn't been good since he came on though, and I think Thiago is too similar to Iniesta, so I'd say Cesc is in prime position.
