After rolling out the first instalment of our two-part series of members’ articles covering the last four friendlies, we cast an eye over another batch of standout performers. The Belgium and France midfields come under analysis after some stellar recent displays, whilst we also assess a number of in-form forwards ahead of tonight’s opening match of Euro 2016.

There are too many good strikers!

Pick 3 for GW1 - Lewandowski, Giroud, Morata, Muller

I am avoiding Ronaldo, for now...

      Lewandowski, Giroud and Muller.

      I'd have Ronaldo though 😀

If you want three captaincy options you can't have both Lewa and Muller.

    How does this look all?

    Kozacik, Patricio
    Dier, Juanfran, Rami, Hinteregger, Strinic
    Ozil, Matuidi, Stanclu, Fabregas, Perisic
    Muller, Giroud and Ronaldo?

I've considered Alaba for Fab but I dont want to have 4 last day players.

I'm going for 5 defenders playing in the first 3 days (and Alba), that can be subbed off easily, with Ronaldo, Mario and Fabregas to bring off the bench to cover having Mak and Stanciu that are going to inevitably blank!

Ok, interesting. I see what your plan is however if your cheapies are sat there on 4/5/6 points let's say and your big hitters are on the bench coach it might make your decisions tricky,

Anybody thinking of taking minutes played during the season into account when making bets and selecting players?

The top of minutes played looks like this:

    France 86115* (81156 club only**)
    Spain 83641 (79550 club only)
    Portugal 82655
    England 81139
    Germany 77701 (73103 club only)
    Belgium 75421 (69706 club only)
    Czechs 73828 (surprising, isn't it?)
    Poland 70449
    ...
    Austria 59094

Spain's collective minutes are reduced, however, by a couple of players who are not expected to play much (Bartra, Vazquez), so I suspect that the lineup has played about as much as that of France. Top nations always have the players playing most for teams that go far in cups, no surprise, and amongst them Germans generally play less minutes because they only have one cup and a 18 team league and are always more fresh for the tournament. Makes me reconsider that Spain bet. Maybe Germany after all.

In addition, we could see the individual players. Belgium's great advantage may be that Hazard is maybe at he's most fresh moment of the season. I don't have complete numbers for this, but according to BBC Smalling is the Euro player with the most minutes this season, Martial the second and way ahead other forwards (from other source, I recall Griezmann was the second, Ronaldo the third). Indeed, muscular fatigue has kept Martial sidelined during the French preparation. Risks of missing much of the tournament too, or at least lacking his explosiveness?

    *according to Evening Standard: http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/england-stars-have-played-less-minutes-than-france-spain-and-portugal-this-season-ahead-of-euro-2016-a3266776.html

I looked at this, because I have a memory of these big summer tournaments being often starred by _some_ players who were in side roles for their club, or played for a lesser club that didn't play much, while those most expected to shine after a great season disappoint. And after the tournament, these lesser club or lesser role players are much wanted assets because of their tournament success, and then flop the next season.

Fatigue certainly is not the only factor in that, but it could be an important one. Of course, some players do exceptionally well despite having played a long season, like Lahm 2010, but not everybody has Lahm's physic.

If Marko Arnautovic has anywhere near a good Euro campaign then i'd say he's probably leaving Stoke this summer. He has a £12.5m release clause whilst he's in the final year of his contract and Stoke seem unwilling to meet his wage demands. Very surprised there's not been rumours already, i'd say Leicester would be a good fit.

    Thoughts?
