England’s vital lunchtime meeting with Wales provides the highlight on Thursday’s menu as DraftKings managers prepare squads for another round of contests.

With Wales claiming three points with victory against Slovakia, England must push for a win having suffered frustration at the hands of Russia on Saturday. Beautifully poised, the clash presents a narrative that is likely to see Roy Hodgson’s side press, whilst battling to contain the threat of Gareth Bale on the break.

Meanwhile, over in Group C, Northern Ireland are left fighting for survival having suffered a first defeat to Poland. They will face a “six-pointer” against Ukraine who are also looking to get their first point on the board after their 2-0 reverse against Germany. Goals surely have to be on the agenda in Lyon, with both sides forced to seek the victory.

There are no such issues for Germany, who will now take on Poland in a two-way battle for Group C dominance. This one looks more difficult to predict but, given the wealth of attacking talent on show, there could yet be fireworks.

We’ve assessed all three fixtures and analysed past performances to come up with a recommended cast of assets for your DraftKings contests.

Kyle Walker – England, – $4800
The Spurs full-back impressed against the Russian’s, working effectively in tandem with the lively Adam Lallana. Walker looked more ambitious than Danny Rose on the opposite flank, drawing three fouls, winning two tackles and providing a single cross. We’d expect the same pattern to emerge against the Welsh, with improved output from Walker.

Ben Davies – Wales, – $3600
Chris Coleman seems likely to set his side up to soak up pressure and break on England. Should that be the case, Ben Davies is likely to be a key man in the Welsh three-man backline. Playing on the left of three centre-backs, Davies built on some impressive numbers during qualifying with a stand-out performance against Slovakia. He pulled off a vital goal line clearance from Marek Hamsik’s effort, made six interceptions and won two tackles. Davies will likely be kept busy again in Thursday’s encounter and could present a viable low-price enabler in the utility slot.

Vyacheslav Shevchuk – Ukraine, – $3900
The veteran campaigner pushed high up the pitch in the 2-0 defeat to Germany, despite Ukraine spending much of that match on the back foot. The 37-year-old was far more attacking from left-back than his team-mate Artem Fedetskiy on the right, producing two crossed balls and an attempt on goal. Given that Northern Ireland produced just three efforts on goal in their opener, Shevchuk could prove a canny DraftKings investment.

Andriy Yarmolenko – Ukraine, – $8100
We tipped Yevhen Konoplyanka in Ukraine’s opener and he duly delivered, producing 14 crosses – more than any other player in the first round of matches. In contrast, Yarmolenko was largely silenced by the Germans but, with Ukraine seeking a vital three points, we’re backing the Dynamo Kiev forward to take his turn to come to the fore. His pace and power was involved in 50% of Ukraine’s goals in qualifying, notching on six occasions.

Oliver Norwood – Northern Ireland, – $4600
Norwood played more minutes in qualifying than any other team-mate and topped their ranks for crossed balls and chances created. While he was restricted in attacking terms in the defeat to Poland, Norwood earned three fouls, won five of ten tackles made and claimed two interceptions. Michael O’Neill’s team are forced to attack against Ukraine and will look to Norwood to produce an all-action display that should result in strong returns for his DraftKings owners.

Arkadiusz Milik – Poland, – $8700
With attentions drawn to the considerable threat of Robert Lewandowski, it was Milik who emerged as match winner against Northern Ireland. The Ajax striker not only delivered the telling strike, he also produced some hugely impressive numbers that included five attempts on goal and seven crossed balls – including four corner kicks, having provided just three throughout qualifying. Milik takes form into the clash with Germany and is again a cheaper alternative to his illustrious strike partner.

Thomas Muller – Germany, – $10,200
The Bayern Munich man cut a peripheral figure against Ukraine, despite Germany’s dominance. Muller mustered just a single effort on goal and provided two crosses but he’ll be expected to improve on that given his contribution in qualifying. With nine goals in as many starts, Muller was involved in 58% of Germany’s goals which would suggest that Poland may now be on the receiving end as Germany look to claim the Group C top spot.

DraftKings contests for Thursday’s matches are now available, including a $3 entry “Striker” with a $10k prize pot.

DraftKings is available only to those aged 18 or over. Be sure to take note of their Terms and Conditions here.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Gotze or Muller captain?

Gotze bagged two last time they played Poland. Muller got goal and assist. Is this irrelevant?

This is just my opinion. Babacan is the best at making saves, apart from Patricio. Spain take a lot of shots, not all of them incisive. I would have a go with Barbican - and I am. My other goalie is Patricio, though.

The rumours around the club suggest that he attempted to use the Everton offer as leverage in contract negotiations and we weren't too impressed, given that he had already verbally agreed a deal before the Everton interest became serious.

If they wanted to keep him they should have matched what Everton offered

I wouldn't say to all the little company's customers and owners that I was going to stay at the little company if I wanted to move.

We shouldn't be held to ransom by him. We can't match Everton for money, why pretend we can?

When are people planning on using the WC?

My original plan was to use WC after first round, but I was pretty happy with my team with 1FT.
After the second round would be a good time for the WC, but it wil also be quite riske as many players are restet for the last match in the group stage.
After the group stage we get unlimited transfers, so no need for the WC here.
Before the Quarter-finals we "only" get 4FT. This will be my WC time I think.
6FT for semi-finals and the same for the final is enough for me if I play my cards right.

But I havent made up my mind yet.

Was planning for the next round due to teams playing each other, cards, rests but will see how it goes... good time to get some different player, later rounds everyone is on the same

I'd initially planned to use mine at the end of this round. But it really depends if enough players convince me I 'need' them. A lot of the strikers are yet to fully convince.

Same - at the moment I think I can have a pretty decent third round by using my 2FTs to swap Croatian for Italian.

Guess it all depends on how your team looks. WC before the quarter-finals could be a big advantage depending on which teams get knocked out in the last 16.

Definitely go for the group win.

And back to 4-3-3. I told you that 4-2-3-1with Matuidi-Kanté in double pivot hasn't worked and doesn't work.

No. Basically, France's attack in general is tons more functional in 4-3-3, so there will be more goals, and he's creating those chances they get in both formations. If you look at either of these two matches, the clear cut chances he assisted were in 4-3-3.

Or let me put it this way: they will not score goals anyway if they continue in 4-2-3-1. So I would avoid their attack altogether in that case.

100%, but if that was supposed to show players in order on the pitch, the correct order is of course Pogba-Kanté-Matuidi.

Or, "100%", I'm not Deschamps, I don't know. But it seems so.

In fact, as great and successful a manager as Deschamps is, to me it seems like he's lost the plot with France. He has started to make knee jerk decisions on basis of results. Like doing without his best players, and better functioning system, because of a goal coming out of nowhere. Maybe managing the NT doesn't suit him. He may need the constancy of games with the same squad that he gets in a club side.

So, with that same reasoning, now the 4-3-3 is back because he won after changing back to it. Except that this time that is also a well founded decision.

There is one more thing. As good as Payet is, he is really an old-fashioned inside forward, rather than a no. 10.

So he suits a 433 much better, unless he is allowed to play on the left of a 4231. That is why Lanzini is so important to us, and why we were so crap when Moses came on.

Hmm... to be honest, he has through his whole career been more effective when played centrally. In ASSE, Lille and Marseille alike. And he isn't really playing that much inside forward for France in 4-3-3, or in my opinion to West Ham, either, but he drops very deep in the midfield and roams over the whole width of the pitch. I think it's that what works well for him, playing in that role similar to what was given to Ribéry and Valbuena before him, formally starting on left, but moving over the width of the pitch as a sort of metronome of the team, providing an outlet for the short passes forward, and launching and organising attacks. A real inside forward would for me be somebody like Robben, or Martial when he plays on left.

Well, for us, all Season - although he has roamed, it is true - he has hung about mainly on the left, about ten metres from the box.

It must be embarrassing for Evra that the opponents clearly target him as the weakest link. That happens to young players often, but this is the most experienced player in the squad, one of its leaders. That can be a problem. Will Deschamps have the liathroidí to drop Evra? It's one thing to drop up and coming star players from the starting lineup for a match or two, and another to drop permanently a star player who is behaving like he was fathering the other players.

Exactly because of that. He's a champion, proud man, and with his experience he must realise that teams like Albania and Romania are targeting him. Which tells him that he's the weakest link of his team. And it's not because of lack of pace only. They would target Rami if that was the reason. In fact, just that they target him instead of Rami must sting a bit.

So who's going to win the tournament? 🙂

I think Italy are going to grind out a 2006-style win.

Italy not a bad call. With all big ones having problems, they have at least a top notch, reliable defence, sound tactics and a whole team playing well together.

Although that could have been said of them 2014 as well, and they didn't make out of their group. And back then they had Pirlo.

Italy also has a difficult route to the finals, if they win their group, and already a yellow card to almost every player in their defence. If Chellini and Bonucci take second yellows and are suspended from a match, that can be arrivederci Italia!

      Spain, still.
