The Euro 2016 quarter-finals get up and running this evening as Poland take on Portugal in the Stade Velodrome for a place in the last four.

Portugal may be slight favourites for the 8pm encounter but it’s fair to say they’ve yet to hit their stride.

Indeed, Fernando Santos’ side have failed to win any of their first four matches in regular time – after a trio of Group F draws against Iceland, Austria and Hungary, they defeated Croatia in extra-time thanks to Ricardo Quaresma’s late strike.

Poland have also flattered to deceive and scored just three times in four fixtures. Unbeaten in the group stages thanks to narrow 1-0 wins over Northern Ireland and Ukraine and a goalless encounter with Germany, they required penalties to see off Switzerland when their clash finished 1-1 after extra time.

A delve into the data certainly favours the Portuguese. They’ve registered more or less double the number of efforts on target (23 to 12) as their opponents and have conceded far less shots in the box (20 to 33), suggesting they could be on course to clinch a place against Belgium or Wales in the semi-finals.

2 assists so far but great stats.. Think he can be the man to crush the Welsh dream? 🙂 Surely he'll get at least one goal this tournament..

Hazard looked great last time out but this is a different opposition / formation..

I just think Belgium will have too much for the Welsh tonight, Kdb is safe and tbh he's due a goal and was robbed another assist by the 'soloist', having watched all Belgium games I've been very impressed with Eden and he's back on top form for me, I would have no hesitation in (c) him either if he starts.

Hazard feels a bit more explosive to me for some reason.. More selfish I suppose 😛 I'll have no problem changing to one of my 4 Italian defenders if it backfires 😎

@EH: Aye, I could see that playing out for sure. But I don't see how Oscar would fit in the holding DM or B2B role with the burden of defensive duty imo. Conte's shown that his system requires your Marchisio's & Vidals of this world, rather than the out-and-out playmakers. Considering Oscar's operated as a #10 all his career, I honestly don't see where he'd fit.

Also, I'm not sure Azpi's dynamic enough on the left in a Conte system tbh. Baba seems more tailored for the Asamoah role in my eyes, even though Mou wasn't nuts about his defensive abilities. Although Conte did run a combination of a traditional winger on one flank and one traditional FB on the other flank with Juve (Cuad/Evra or Lich/Sandro). I see William being a good match there as he's more then capable of holding his own on the flank, it's just Hazard who's in question really like we speculate.

You guys probably need to get at least 1 ball playing CB who's comfortable on the ball and 1 athletic box-to-box milf to mold into a proper Conte system imo.

I understand he'll have to make do with the squad as is & make less than ideal adjustments to his system accordingly like Klopp did. The gaping hole here is the lack of a box-to-box midfielder, guy makes the whole engine tick. Are you guys still in for Nainggolan?

I'm starting to think that unless you guys fix the CB & midfield dilemma that Conte may make some serious tweaks to the formation. When he started his managerial career at Bari then later Siena his favorite formation was the 442 (with the wingers pushed up to become a 424) which he admitted he wanted to use at Juventus but with the club bringing in Vidal and having average wingers he changed to a 352. Those ball-playing CB's are vital.

I love Oscar and I personally feel that a box to box CM role suits him really well. Even though he doesn't have the physicality of Vidal , he is a boss in midfield. He dominates T+I stats from the #10 position and he will thrive now in a CM role. He is a great presser , he involves everyone around him in possession and has the potential to be world class. Many Chelsea fans despise him but I am in the minority. Conte wanted him at Juve and even made a 40 million bid because of the above reasons. In fact , I think the CM role in Conte's 352 is a perfect fit form. Still a box to box mid is needed as backup if Oscar doesn't work. We are still linked with Radja , yes but his main strength is just running and running and I don't feel that he should be a starter for a team trying to win the league.

Coming to the CB situation , I think Terry and Zouma will be first choice CBs provided that they are fit enough (Terry is old and Zouma recovering from injury. Terry's ball playing skills are underrated but we need a top ball playing CB like Bonucci , yes and a decent-ish backup. I will be happy if we sign two of Stones , Bonucci and Koulibaly tbh.

Since Conte has signed Michy , I am pretty sure we will play 352 as it protects our regista - Fabregas - from being exposed. Re:WBs - Willian/Cuadrado will definitely be our RWB for reasons you mention. Also , following the template of the Italian team at the Euros , Willian/Cuadrado ~ Candreva/Florenzi. On the other side , I think we need a workhorse to cover for Hazard and Baba Rahman has disappointed in his first season. Obviously , Baba is very talented and fits the role perfectly but Azpi should be the first choice WB to start off the season and gradually Baba will be integrated into the team.

I'm not sure there tbh, EH. Have to say I disagree completely on Oscar's prospects as a b2b. I agree that he's a selfless player & good passer, but he's never been burdened with the bulk of defensive duties. Yes, he has a good work-rate & can press well but being in charge of dictating a midfield role & supporting the attack for 90 mins? I just can't see it working out tbh, Pogba fell under a similar thing last season when Pirlo/Vidal left Mach/Khedira were inured & he fell victim to the pressure & trying to do match. You're taking Oscar out of his range & I don't think we'd be seeing similar Oscar output here imo.

Naing & Kante live for those roles, physical enough to get the tackle, win the ball back on his half, link up with wing-back in midfield & go for the counter with ease the whole match. Not to say he hasn't done that, but I sincerely doubt he can do it for 90 minutes straight

Fair dos regarding Bonucci, that'd be a brilliant signing, mate. Hope you guys get that. Should definitely be in the top pecking order behind Naing, imo.

I feel confident about Oscar because Conte wanted him at Juve but you make a very valid point about Pogba and Oscar is not even comparable to his standard. Lets see what happens , I hope that Oscar proves me right.

Maybe , you are right about his contribution to attack but he takes a lot of shots from long distances which I hate to see in players. Kante did well for Leicester this season in terms of starting counter-attacks as well btw. 🙂

Oh he does for sure (I think most b2b's succumb to lousy shot taking) but his key passes are better & creative output is better in general. Averages more chances created per game fwie

We need DM and CB's sorted out extremely fast and also to get rid of deadweight on the bench. I think Oscar has to go and so does half of our midfield.
If we somehow get Radja it will be massive for us, but its unlikely it seems.

      1. Zasa
        • 12 Years

Radja would be great, that midfield is so awkward right now without an engine. I agree, Oscar just doesn't make sense in the 352, doesn't have the physicality to hold a proper midfield role. Much better options out there, don't see why he'd be shoehorned in.

You are quoting me on one misused word. What I meant that was he makes life hell for the opposition's midfield , not in an attacking sense. Btw , that match against Sunderland was one of his best matches (if not the best) from an attacking perspective in the league and he certainly bossed the game in that match.

He was outstandingly good in that game. The reason it was outstanding is that he has never played anything like as well for Chelsea before or since.

Not favoured by Mourinho towards the end despite Mourinho having sold KDB in order to give Oscar the #10 role. Not favoured by Hiddink either despite having chances initially. You have to ask yourself why.

Towards the end of Mourinho's tenure (and the entire season tbh) , everything had gone crazy and I don't think we should make any deductions based on this season.

in 14-15 tho , Oscar was brilliant to ensure the Matic-Fabregas midfield actually worked. As you say below -
'..and why Hiddink preferred Mikel'. Oscar , along with Costa and Willian made sure that Matic and Fabregas were protected. In fact , I think Oscar was dropped in the later stages of Mourinho's tenure and during Hiddink's stint because Matic was dropped and Chelsea did not 'need' Oscar.

Mourinho said this after our 2-0 win against Arsenal. (Oscar was brought back into the team - Matic and Fabregas played)

Blimey. You keep doing this. Quoting such-and-such stats and such-and-such comments after such-and-such games.

There is a reason that most Chelsea regulars consider Oscar to be surplus to requirements. And that is that he has generally been p!ss poor. As a #10 his passing is mediocre and lacks creativity. As a tackler he is lightweight. And he drifts out of games very often.

That's why the Sunderland game was outstanding. Most of us couldn't believe that was Oscar. But normal service was resumed pretty quickly thereafter.

I am ready to listen to other people and I understand your opinion. Oscar has been frustrating to watch but I see the potential in him , given his age. Not debating any further.

Mate, extrapolating some general encouraging comments about "attacking players" when Chelsea were struggling and the manager needed to encourage them into some kind of endorsement of Oscar is stretching things a bit. That's my point.

I am not forcing my view on you. I just think you are wrong. 🙂

I said I won't debate further but still , one last thing. IMO , Oscar contributes a lot in terms of defending from the front. I said that and then presented a quote said by Mourinho which indirectly backs it up. Yes - "extrapolating some general encouraging comments about "attacking players" when Chelsea were struggling and the manager needed to encourage them into some kind of endorsement of Oscar is stretching things a bit." - I am guilty of that but I also think that Mourinho meant Oscar which is obviously subjective. To end on a merry note - If I am wrong , Oscar doesn't change things in 16/17 but if I am correct , Chelsea will have a great season. 😉

                        India. 🙂

Kinda late to the party, but i do think Oscar is the second player i would like to see gone from midfield for us (Pedro takes the first spot by a mile) i just do not see him being valuable to the team at all. Sure, he can press, but those players are not actually physical enough to take that ball rather than just run to the person who controls it.

I really do not rate him high at all and would love to see him gone. On the other hand Radja is the player we desperately need.

He's a pure DM though, I meant more as b2b who's holding the midfield per-se. It's partly due to his form that I'd exclude him, but moreso because a traditional DM like Matic isn't ideal in Conte“s system in my view. He's always preferred a b2b set-up

Matic is not a "pure DM" if you mean like Makélélé. He doesn't just sit, that's partly the problem with him playing alongside Fabregas in CM (and why Hiddink preferred Mikel).

Good point, but nonetheless I don't he's equipped to fill the role of a Vidal here. There may be a hybrid available & he'll be molded into a similar role, but as it stands, a Niang/Kante would be much better options to compliment the diamond

Well, you assume that Conte plays his 3-5-2 at Chelsea. I don't. He has used variations of 4-4-2 in the past as well. The one constant seems to be that he likes to play with 2 strikers.

Yeah, he's definitely shone he'll adapt his tactics accordingly from team-to-team & with what's given to him. I think it's more likely that a 3-at-the-back is out of the equation once it's clear you guys won't sign a viable ball-playing CB this window though. The current trio you guys have isn't a good pairing nor does it make much sense as it stands

As HC said, JT is actually excellent on the ball. He's also excellent positionally and lacks pace (even more so now). Centre of a back-3 could actually suit him if the wingbacks do their job.

It is Azpilicueta that I fear for if we move to 3-5-2.

His positing made up for his lack of pace in spades in the 14/15 season, it was a great example of sheer experience thwarting pure athletic defense. He definitely has more shelf-life, still a decent age for a CB, I agree. It' the other ones that are concerning tbh, especially since they'll be on the flanks

Ideally we'd be seeing a similar shape to this when attacking: The Barza role in particular is where I'm not sure Zouma or Terry are capable of supporting efficiently. Maybe Ivan can

Another example here, Barza joins the regista on his left. Ideally it'd be Terry & Cahill(?) behind sitting for the counter. It's why the ball-playing CB is so crucial, & integral to the build-up. Genuinely curious how Ivan would do here

Ivan can't play as a CB imo. He is OK as a backup but he cannot/should not start imo. If we play 3 at the back , a new CB is needed , who is good with the ball on his feet.

The problems I have with Ivanovic in that kinda role

1)Never played before although he had to similar stuff as RB.
                        2)Not fast/mobile enough.
3)He cant be expected to start 30+ games at his age. Same as Terry , cant have 2 of such players imo.

He is not a pure DM. He was very good in 14-15 to help progress the ball from tight areas imo. Would work well as B2B too as he is sometimes too aggressive in his pressing , which is not required as a 'pure DM'.

Manchester City have signed Spain forward Nolito from Celta Vigo after meeting his £13.8m release clause.

The 29-year-old has signed a four-year contract to become City's third summer signing.

New manager Pep Guardiola has already brought in Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund for £20m, as well as Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy.

Navas / Sterling are indeed weak little fairy players..

Silva is a lot more aggressive and vicious on the pitch than most give him credit for, always racks up the fouls by throwing his small Spanish body into tackles. Aguero is more than capable of holding his own, albeit not to Costa/Drogba/Ibra levels.. and I can see Nolito fitting in very well in the PL, direct forward and not a complete pushover either 🙂

I wonder how Gundogan's fragile body will handle the PL 😐

Yea fair points by both esp on Sterling/Navas, I'm just wondering if we feel Pep could be underestimating the physicality of the EPL at times? Aguero is a power horse but if i were a fan I might be a little concerned that we need to beef it up a little also lets not forget Gundogan is out injured till Nov (possibly Jan) and Yaya probably sold.

I loved Italia 90, even despite the Argies trying to bore their way to victory. (it made the Germans the 'good guys' in the final -and thats something that doesnt happen often!). Euro 92 on the other hand was plain dull.

I wasn't alive for Italia 90 but this is definitely the worst I've watched.

Italia 90 was fantastic. the worst tournaments I've ever seen was the 94 World Cup - the one where Brazil turned into Stoke.

The Euros when Greece won was particularly painful too. Not trying to score became an art form in that tournament.

No, hated South Africa 2010. I don't think this has been that bad.

I dispute the claims of the recent article on Redmond. I believe it is far too early to assert that he is Mané's direct replacement.

If last season is anything to go by, we have often lost one player and replaced them with two, as a means of enriching the squad depth. So for example, we lost Schneiderlin and replaced him with Clasie and Romeu - a move that is yet to come good.

As we were linked to Redmond for over a year, long before Mané's move looked likely, I strongly suspect there will be another winger coming into the club. According to local Norfolk sources, we have joined the race for Robbie Brady - he would revert back to a winger at Saints I think, given Bertrand's solid performances. According to Midlands sources, we have also shown interest in Saido Berahino who is now expected to go for something close to £15-16m as his contract expires next summer. While we may not end up with either, such rumours suggest that we are far from finished in this market.

The upshot: Redmond may end up cheaper than the 7-7.5 projected but he also may be a much riskier pick than the 'Moving Target' article suggested.

Brady looks an excellent buy in an over priced/over inflated market-really hope ye/Leicester sign Robbie, he's a top lad.
