Wales defied even their own expectations to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016 at the expense of a Belgium side lacking the cohesion and opportunism of Chris Coleman’s team.

Wales 3 Belgium 1

A master class from Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey (7.6), and a moment of brilliance by free agent Hal Robson-Kanu (6.0), made all the difference as Wales won a pulsating quarter-final clash with Belgium.

Gareth Bale (10.5) has grabbed much of the attention in France, but it is Ramsey who is emerging as the team’s driving force and he consolidated that status with two assists in a match full of an attacking purpose noticeably lacking from the tournament as a whole.

Belgium can take a certain amount of credit for that, and it was they who opened the scoring when Radja Nainggolan smashed home a long range drive in the 13th minute from an Eden Hazard pass.

Marc Wilmots’ men failed to capitalise on their early dominance and were left to rue that profligacy when Ashley Williams (5.5) headed in an equaliser from a Ramsey corner.

That was one of a match-leading four attempts by the Welsh captain – equalled by his counterpart Hazard – as Belgium struggled to deal with Wales’ set-piece threat.

This prompted Wilmots to bring on Marouane Fellaini for Yannick Carrasco at half-time as Belgium switched from 4-2-3-1 to 4-5-1, with the full-backs far more advanced.

The decision ushered in a second period of dominance for Belgium, with right-back Thomas Meunier particularly influential, but their lack of an end product cost them dear when Robson-Kanu’s superb turn and cool finish gave the Welsh an unlikely 55th minute lead.

Ramsey supplied the final ball for the goal, one of six chances he created (to go with seven crosses for stellar DraftKings returns).

The match was superbly balanced throughout, with Wales edging the shot count 15-14 (7-4 on target), until substitute striker Sam Vokes (5.9) headed home against the run of play from a late Chris Gunter (5.0) cross to seal the deal.

It capped a glorious night for Wales, but also a bittersweet one – a needless yellow card for handball earlier ruling Ramsey out of the semi-final against Portugal.

That will hugely hurt Wales’ attacking threat – Ramsey has a tournament-leading four assists to his name – and hit the 20% of managers who own him in the official Uefa game particularly hard. Defender Ben Davies (5.0) will also be suspended.

That will likely see Andy King or Jonny Williams drafted into midfield, with West Ham’s James Collins set to get the nod in defence as Davies’ replacement.

Wales v Portugal will no doubt be hyped as a galactico battle between Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, but both sides have proved themselves to be rather more than their superstars.

The key, however, could well be the absence of Ramsey, and they will need the enterprise of Robson-Kanu to help take some of the attacking load off Bale’s shoulders for a Welsh side that might otherwise struggle to break down a resolute Portuguese outfit.

Iceland winning was not a surprise though.

England had an easier group otherwise they wouldn't have made it out of the group.

Really need Germany and France to do the business:

    Fab* / Lloris
    Meunier* / Umtiti / Gia / Hector / Cedric
    Haz* / KDB* / Grosicki* / Drax / Payet
    Gomez / Ronaldo / Griez

Anyone worse than this. Umtiti might also be out next round 🙁

We both have payet and griezmann so I think he'll put the armband on one of them.

Well done to the Welsh team. I've always rated Ramsey highly and it wouldn't surprise me if Barcelona start to show interest again. He's a talent and should be starting week in week out for Arsenal. He would flourish in a more attacking role alongside a more defensive midfielder.

As for England I don't think its fair to say they are overrated. They have good players and should be capable of getting to the semi finals much like how Wales has done. All they needed was a positive attitude, self belief and confidence. Unfortunately the weight of expectation has made them play only with fear.

Wenger wanted him as a box-to-box ideally. But his instincts are too attacking even for that role. Need an outstanding DM alongsidefor that to happen. But nit good enough as the CAM in my opinion. Loses the ball too much too.

Loses the ball yes , but his goal scoring , workrate and physicality are better than Ozil. If Ramsey were more consistent , I would go further and say that he is better but sadly , yesterday's performance was probably his 80th percentile game and more often than not , he is frustrating like most goal scoring AMs in the world. 🙁

That's why I said that Wenger has done injustice to Ramsey...exactly my point. Should have strengthened on positions which needed strengthening for years (CF , DM , CB - even GK at that time) instead of buying yet another AM....

I feel like people misrepresent the skill set needed to play as a 10. It's 90% game understanding, 10% technical quality. Ramsey is the typical British player in that he has technical and physical qualities, but lacks game understanding. He couldn't even play next to Coq because he doesn't know what to do there.

And I'm pretty sure Wenger spent £35m on Xhaka to bring the best out of Ramsey, and he has stuck with Ramsey through periods of form that no other manager would.

Ozil is a million times better than Ramsey ever will be as a 10, imo.

I wouldn't say he's a pure 10 either. Definitely an 8 though. The box to box role suits him well but perhaps its the 4231 formation which doesn't suit. I think he'd do well in a 433 with a proper DM behind him.

                        8 is now Ramsey's number! 😛

He'd certainly work in a 433 as a B2B, and 433 generally comprise of a pivot, a controller and a B2B (Alonso, Modric, ADM- Busquets, Iniesta, Rakitic- Alonso, Thiago, Vidal- Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Khedira in 2014, Motta, Verrati, Matuidi), but with Xhaka he should now to the job of both the pivot and the controller, so Ramsey can work in a 4231. It's why he worked well with Arteta, and why Wenger tried to replace Arteta with Cabaye, and thankfully Xhaka is better defensively than both.

You don't think it's fair maybe because you're from England. Yes they have some good players but compared to others they aren't good enough. Not even making it out of the group at the World Cup proved it.

Both Premier League and England are overrated as hell.

No I'm from NZ. A purely unbiased perspective from the other side of the world.

Most of the Welsh team play in the football league in england and many of them aren't in the top tier yet look how well they are doing.

No matter how popular or how brilliant the English players are in the English Premier League, they have simply failed to come together as a unit in the past two decades. To put things in perspective, England’s only wins in the knockout stages of an international competition in this millennium came against Denmark (2002) and Ecuador (2006).

The bottom line? High and mighty England – the founding fathers of modern association football and probably the only squad where the average fan knows each and every player thanks to the rise in popularity of the Premier League – are nothing but minnows who exceed expectations when they reach a quarter-final. A mediocre team with ridiculously overrated individuals whose collective popularity eclipses their less-than-average tactical intelligence.

I think you are being a bit over the top. No doubt the english media constantly build them up and then savagely tear them down when they don't at least make the quarter finals (and even if they did they'd still tear them down). The players have to play under these conditions and its simply not reasonable. I think the players are the realistic ones, its the public and the media who turn them into something they are not.

I would argue that the problem with England has always been management. I mean there was a time when Gerrard and Lampard actually started as CMs in a 4-4-2 formation!

I agree that its a team culture issue. Its not a talent issue imo. If they were to overcome their mental demons and build a solid team culture their fortunes can change. I would say they have underperformed in these international competitions because of the pressure, lack of team culture and unity. I think the English public has a lot to answer for too because that is where the pressure comes from.

Most teams have an identity, a style of play that has helped define their success on the international stage. Sadly, England is devoid of any style or tactical know-how. The Premier League is glorious thanks to its hustle-bustle nature and entertainment value. But when these players are up against organised sides with an effective gameplan in place, they are clueless.

English players are nowhere close to the individual skill of the Spaniards, the tactical intelligence of the Italians or the teamwork and efficiency of the Germans. The sooner they realise they are not entitled to winning trophies because of a single World Cup win 50 years ago, the better.

I agree. They aren't entitled to come 1st all the time and who is to blame for this unreasonable level of expectation? I certainly don't think its the players themselves.

If they wen't into a tournament with no pressure or expectation then I think they'd perform much better. Of course they'd also need strong management and a proper team culture with a bit of national pride thrown in. At the moment the english team is devoid of all that. Of course that does not mean they are not good enough as individuals. They can do it but it does require all these things to come together in order for it to happen.

The bravery and success of the Welsh team and how they've gone as far as they have should be their inspiration.

I agree with a lot of the above

However England played Russia, Wales, Slovakia & Iceland. You couldnt have handpicked better games.

Im not saying England deserve to win anything but they should have done better than they did.

I lay the majority of the blame on the shoulders of the FA, they repeatedly employ the wrong people, for short term fixes, we need a style of play, a formation, some tactics, but most of all we need leadership.

The more and more I think about it lack of leadership is the issue, from the FA, from the coaches and most importantly on the pitch

Belgium quadruple up didn't go so well. And those didn't include Hazard...

Expecting a tight game today - going with Hummels (C), Ozil and Kroos. That was a deliberate combination to try for a big differential score - think Germany will shut Italy out, and if Hummels scores, Ozil or Kroos should get the assist.

343 is such a fascinating formation. The NZ national team play with that formation and its certainly an odd one. 3 CB's, 2CM's, 2WB's, 2 inside forwards/wingers and a striker. I don't mind it actually.

        A bonus point for

        3 saves made (GK only)
        4 tackles won (All)
        60 completed passes (All)
        3 shots on target (All)

        and two bonus points for

        5 saves made (GK only)
        5 tackles won (All)
        70 completed passes (All)
        5 shots on target (All)

Which means that sharp shooting goal scorers, slick passes, tough tacklers and great goal keepers in front of dodgy defences look key.

Strategy wise there's a huge change around captains.

You get a captain for each matchday...and still score double for each. This is especially important in a season where Friday night football is added into the mix.

Mixed feelings about the changes to opta stats for scoring but the big no-no imo is the actual site interface.
Last season it was very easy to see everything on one screen but now you have to flit from page to page to see your team/fixtures/transfers etc.
Previously you could transfer players in and out simply by clicking on them on the team page but now you have to go to the transfer out screen and select a player, then go to the transfer in screen and select a player, then go to another screen to reselect your captain, and finally to yet another screen to confirm your changes!

There is a feedback link at the bottom of the home page.

I've sent feedback listing a number of issues that are far from satisfactory. I would guess if enough of us express our concerns they will probably do something about it. Plenty of time for them to improve the site before the season starts.

I'd play it 'safe' and stick with the Germans then. If Gomez/Kroos tears it up hopefully you will get some points from it. Presuming your rival will be captaining a German.

A bit too early to think about SF transfers but with 2 key players out for Wales is it a good idea to get Ronaldo in for SF. Already have Bale not getting rid of him of course. If Ronaldo comes in it'll be either for Giroud or Mueller.

They might. But I need Portugal Cover. They can also win. They might have not had a convincing victory but if CR7 has a good match it could be over for Wales without Ramsey & Davies.

Keep Hennessy for 3 or bring in Neuer?

There's a chance you might lose out on a whole point if things go wrong with Neuer.

Rumours that Germany could be playing 3 at the back, which would mean Hector playing wing-back - could be a great (C) option if so.

Only if he has learned how to cross a ball.

Those prices on the Sky game are ridiculous, I can't be expected to put a team together for £100M!

Flying out of Trinidad going to Paris for the France v Iceland game (and I guess a vacation). The Barbados tridents were also flying out for their next cpl game. Got to snap a pic with Ab de Villiers. He doesn't seem like a morning person though
