The first semi-final of Euro 2016 was decided by two quick second-half goals as Portugal shut down Wales with relative ease and a slice of luck.

Portugal 2 Wales 0

Those two goals in three minutes put paid to a passive Wales side desperately missing the energy and creativity of the suspended Aaron Ramsey.

After one of the dullest first halves of a less than free-wheeling tournament, Cristiano Ronaldo (12.0) broke the deadlock with a header from fit-again Raphael Guerreiro’s (4.0) cross.

The most popular pick in our daily Captain Poll, with 49.13% votes , the Real Madrid star then set up the killer second goal when his mishit shot fell to strike partner Nani (7.5), who steered it home.

The scoreline was a tad harsh on the Welsh, but they never looked like clawing back the deficit. Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio (5.0) was rarely troubled, with little more to do than see off speculative shots from Gareth Bale.

Bale and Ronaldo dominated the attacking stats for their teams, firing in five and nine attempts respectively, and the former also returned match-high figures for chances created (two) and crosses (six) for good DraftKings returns.

In terms of goal threat, the Welsh were out-shot by 18 attempts to nine by their opponents and did precious little with the 56.4% possession they were given by a deep-lying Portugal, who kept a clean sheet despite the absence of one of their best performers of Euro 2016, Pepe (5.5).

His replacement, Bruno Alves (5.0), was barely tested by Wales but still managed to pick up a yellow card. The 30% of official Uefa game managers with Pepe in their teams will hope he’s fit for Sunday’s final, while full-back Guerreiro and Cedric Soares (4.5) remain considerably more productive DraftKings selections.

Nani has proved an excellent budget option up front. He now has 27 points for the tournament – just five shy of Ronaldo – and has as many goals (three) as his illustrious team-mate from 24 fewer attempts.

Ronaldo offers a huge threat in the air but is no longer the all-round threat he once was, having completed just three successful dribbles all tournament – Bale managed 22.

Just over half of Uefa managers saw midfielder Renato Sanches show promise but little else against Wales, though as his opener against Poland showed last time out, the new Bayern man remains excellent value for a price of just 4.4.

Sorry guys my 3rd post. Trying to narrow down my captaincy choices. It's come down from 5 to 2. Chasing 16 points Rival captain Neur.

    A) In Form Payet against a tight German Defence.

    B) Not so in form Mueller probably playing CF against a shaky French defence.

I'm extremely intrigued to see which two of these are starters for Arsenal next season (injuries I know, just optimistic here).

Francis Coquelin. Santi Cazorla. Aaron Ramsey. Jack Wilshere. Granit Xhaka. Mohamed Elneny.

That's a lot of options, and really good ones too.

It worked well according to the #stats but shot conversion was a sorry 3.5% as a RW last season which will improve.

Personally , I would like Ozil to play as a false winger and Ramsey as the #10.

          1. Saniul
            • 13 Years

Ozil as false winger had the worst season in his career. He looked woefully out of place, and finally, Wenger came to his senses to move him back to #10 - Also, he is the best #10 in the world, Ramsey isn't.

Why would he make that mistake again?

Ozil has always averaged 2 assists every 3 games throughout his Arsenal career...injuries have stalled him , nothing else.

              Cos Ramsey #10 + Ozil RW > Ramsey RW + Ozil #10...

If rooney plays (which he will) i still think they front 4 is better than Arsenal. I think Giroud is too wasteful and Ramsey is a great player, but just isnt enough.

If somehow Mkhi goes cam and Rashford right, than its not even a competition in my eyes.

      Xhaka / Cazorla.

One of Coquelin / Eleny in for Xhaka for games where they need to be defensive. Cazorla needs to play every game he's fit for imo.

Ramsey might have to settle for playing out wide / further forward..

Not sure if there's any space for Wilshere anymore. Xhaka could directly replace him.

      1. Saniul
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

Well, Wilshere is an extremely good player when he's fit or around, so won't rule that out.

As for Cazorla playing every game, you have to look at his age and accept he won't be able to do that. Still our best ball-playing midfielder.

Personally, Xhaka and Ramsey is the pairing for me - assuming Xhaka is adept enough at defensive duties.

I disagree, Wilshere used to be an extremely good player. He's lost the short burst of acceleration he used to have before the injuries, and now he's a limited player. I really, really don't rate him.

Ah Cazorla is only 31.. He's got another 2 years in him before he follows Pirlo / Xavi into that realm 🙂

If Xhaka is willing to accept most of the defensive duties then himself and Ramsey could be lethal.

Exactly, look at the tackles he makes, the yellow and red cards he gets every season. He is a like a Coquelin who can also make a defence splitting pass towards Giroud - win-win for me!

I would be interested to see Xhaka and Elneny playing in the pivot. In terms of ball retention, passing, interceptions and tackles Elneny was excellent when he played last season - although it didn't always look like he was important to the team, he was. Xhaka is in some ways similar so I wonder whether they would clash or if we would just relentlessly control then break up possession.

      1. Saniul
        • 13 Years

Yes, I'm afraid Elneny could get lost in the shuffle. So can Wilshere.

Pretty sure, it will be one of Cazorla and Ramsey as Xhaka's partner initially, they are too good to be dropped when fit.

      Coq + Ramsey for me.

Not sure Xhaka offers anything better than the existing options. Coq or Elneny have to take up one of the positions imo, don't think Xhaka is defensive enough

Wenger will rotate, the only time he doesn't rotate is when he hasn't got the options, like with Sanchez, in midfield he has them therefore we will see all of them get playing time over the season with Xhaka most likely to see the most minutes imo.

Also, first time I've been on here since the change, is it this slow for everyone else?

@Slavic Madrista. I just had a look at the makeup of the Albanian side. They have 2 teams which don't have Greizmann at all which makes him a differential in our favour. If you want to captain him go ahead!

Many questions about how he recovers from injury as pace is one of his biggest strengths.

Many questions as he is competing with Sturridge and Origi for one spot and with no European football there's likely to be less rotation

      Surely behind Sturridge and Origi.

How about I start a rumour here that on the new FPL site, you cannot change your team name once you chose one at the time of registration?

Careful picking your team names this year when hunting for that low ID.. there's a rumour you have to stick with your initial choice and can't change team name..

Hi in a dilemma need advice please.

Need to bench 2 out of these 4, who would you recommend

    Boateng
    Hector
    Koscielny
    Draxler

    already have payet,pogba,greizmann from france
    From germany already have Neur,Ozil,Muller
Plus 3 portugal who im keeping.

Any advice which 2 to bench from the 4 please.

i would bench hector and koscielny and boatang , as hector has as much chance if nicking a goal as boatang and hector might get an assist and draxler as the french defence does not look that strong , i could do with some advice for my team i have a few tough decisions to make

      my side is

      henn ( 2 ) , boatang , fonte ( 6 ) , kos , Taylor ( 1 ) , Mario ( 3 ) , Payet Sanches ( 3 ) , Bale ( 1 ) , Griezmann and Ronaldo ( 16 C )

      Lloris , Hector , Kross , Ozil

any ideas on what i should do i think my best option is to go 442 and leave ozil on the bench i have 21 point lead in my league with my closest friend losing 1 points with changes if i make the changes i said iwould be 18 points ahead before kick off

I see, bench Koscielny & Boateng then. Hector & Draxler pose more attacking threat.

Master5hake are you telling me to bench hector, Koscielny and boateng? I need to choose 2 to bench.
    Should i play Drazler then.

Looking at your team i wouldn't bench Ozil he is a great assist king and might nick a goal here and there.
I would drop taylor for hector, and bale for Ozil

sorry sonic i ment keep hector and draxler , hector could get an assist and draxler could nick a goal , i would wait and look on bbc website for team news , it goes on there about 30-45 minutes before kick off , people have told me to swap bale for ozil but bale is a forward i dont know if im missing something loads are suggesting it

You are missing the auto-change in formation, so Bale>Ozil is fine.

Thank you but boateng could get a goal aswell, tough choice between boateng and hector.
Well ozil will get no less than 2 points i would say. I fancy the germans to win tonight.
