Next up in our series of members’ articles reviewing the numbers behind the 2015/16 campaign we put Crystal Palace under analysis.

We start by assessing their team data, comparing the Eagles to the rest of the top-flight, before focusing on their first-team squad and assessing the main goal threats and creative sources, in an attempt to gain insight on their prospects for 2016/17.

Having started the campaign with five wins in their first eight fixtures, Alan Pardew’s side looked like improving upon their tenth-placed finish in 2014/15 but Palace struggled to maintain momentum and won only six more matches in the remaining 30 Gameweeks, ending up just five points clear of the bottom three.

8 out of the 9 Man Utd's opening fixtures are all being shown live on TV

If they show the Stoke game it will be 9 out of 9

How many fodder players are we expecting to start off with to fund all the expensive boys? 🙂

Any you're keeping your eye on to hope they're 6m or less?

Gray is an interesting one if he nails down a place..
Gradel might sneak under the radar..
Feghouli could be priced nicely enough..

Will all of our fodder players be from the promoted teams?

      gk1, gk2
      def3, def4, def5
      mid5
      fwd3

is my usual template for cheapies.

        This.

Although with defense we usually go with

        6 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0

        to gain more flexibilty

          9 years, 5 months ago

          5.5 5.5 4.5 4.5 4.0 tops for me. Two seasons ago I went 5.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0, 4.0.

You one genius guy, or extremely lucky. 😉

Never been tempted with CHE or MCI or even ARS defenders? Not every year we're getting a Bellerin..

Two seasons ago we got Debuchy @ 5.5m and Chambers @ 4.5m and Naughton from Spurs @ 4.5m. After Naughton's red card I then got in Hutton and went to 5.5, 4.5, 4.0, 4.0, 4.0. I never overpay to get into a defence at the start of a season when money is tight.

You've made the right move there. CS are hard to predict and it's an added bonus if we get them from those cheapie lots.

Now what we need,is the likes of Hutton or Daniels to emerge. Hopefully we can resist the temptation to get a CHE or MUN defender early on.. although I assume they will only be super-tight at the back at the turn of the year..

Yep already pretty set on going very cheap in those 5 defensive spots you mentioned. Might be a struggle to find 3 decent cheap defenders at the start but they'll make themselves known no doubt!

Will you be rotating mid5 and fwd3 or will one be slightly more expensive than the other? All price-dependent obviously.

          • 12 Years
          9 years, 5 months ago

Decent doesn't really come into it on cheap defenders just get 3 that start and then hopefully they have some semblance of rotation. Mid5 £4.5m bench fodder and fwd3 playing with his price being a compromise between options for him and options for mid4.

This, although I suspect we might need to add a mid4 this year Balders.

Prices will probably only allow for 2 x big defs, 3 x big mids & 2 x big mids.

Will be delighted if we can squeeze a medium priced 4th mid, but somehow doubt it.

I reckon a 3rd decent def over 4th mid might be the way to go this year?

With attackers potentially tired after the Euros, are you expecting a slow start in terms of goals? A third defender vs a 4th midfielder could be an interesting choice, especially if defenders are a good deal cheaper again.

      I usually go

      4.5 / 4.5
2 cheapies (perhaps 1 bench fodder) then 3 higher priced def but not neccesarily premium
heavy hitting mid / mid price / mid price / mid price / bench fodder
Pricey forward / Pricey forward / cheap forward

      If it allows...

Seen Gradel's returns last season and his team, his price should be quite low indeed. At 5.0-5.5 he'd be very interesting.

Yep, I have him earmarked as my cheap mid. Looks a player and his rhythm must have been thrown off by that injury last season, could push on now with a good preseason and another year of Eddie Howe under his belt 🙂

Yeah, he's a good player, and a goal scorer. Could be one of the gems for this season, an enabler you end up not wanting to bench.

Does "cheap mid" mean your lowest cost 4th playing midfielder, or do you shy away from the 4.5M bench-fodder-mid approach?

            • 12 Years

Can be either. Personally, I usually only have that 4.5 midfielder if there's someone who actually plays and has an attacking enough role, or penalties or set pieces.

Yeah hard to pick one at the start of the season, and I feel it's even less likely it'll be possible to find a good one this year.

We only had Wanyama, Fletcher and Westwood last year. It was the first year I was convinced by the community to take the approach. We be doing so this year.

None of them appealed to me. I never have these Wanyama's and such. It has to be someone with chances to attacking returns rather than red cards. There was some Bournemouth lad who appeared early on that I found reasonably good. Don't remember who he was.

Defenders from Everton and Palace to start the season potentially promising.
Two fixtures against WBA, home to BOU then two against MID in the first five.
