Having already secured the services of Ron-Robert Zieler, Luis Hernandez, Raul Uche Rubio and Nampalys Mendy in this transfer window, Leicester City broke their club record transfer fee earlier this month to capture forward Ahmed Musa for a reported £16 million.

The 23-year-old joins the Foxes from Russian side CSKA Moscow, and has penned a four-year deal with the Premier League champions. Speaking to the club’s official website, Musa expressed his delight at securing a move to last season’s surprise package:

“I feel very happy joining Leicester City, for me it’s one of the best clubs and I feel very happy. I joined because it’s one of the best clubs in the Premier League and they are like a family. That’s why I joined Leicester City and I’m very excited. I look forward to seeing the fans in the new season and I will do my best to make them happy.”

The History

Born in Jos, Nigeria, Musa started out at GBS Football Academy, and spent loan spells at Nigerian sides JUTH FC and Kano Pillars between 2008 and 2010. During the second of those temporary stints, Musa scored 18 goals in 25 appearances, breaking a league record.

He moved to Dutch side VVV-Venlo is 2010, producing seven goals and nine assists in 27 matches during the 2010/11 campaign as Venlo avoided relegation from the Eredivisie via a play-off. The following season saw Musa bag three goals and as many assists in 14 league appearances before joining CSKA Moscow in January 2012.

Over the course of four-and-a-half years in Russia, Musa served up 42 goals and 23 assists over 125 league outings and won three league titles. He also gained valuable Champions League experience, playing 24 matches in total, scoring six goals and adding four assists.

The 23-year-old made his senior international debut against Madagascar in August 2010, before scoring his first goal in a friendly against Kenya in March 2011. He featured in both the 2013 African Cup of Nations and the 2013 Confederations Cup, while he notably scored twice in Nigeria’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2014 World Cup. Musa has netted 11 times in 58 appearances for his country.

The Prospects

With Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri having to juggle domestic matters with a Champions League campaign this season, the Italian clearly needed to add both quality and depth to his squad. Musa certainly helps tick both of those boxes, with the Nigerian capable of playing both out wide and up front.

Ranieri mainly favoured a 4-4-1-1 formations last term, so it could be the places of Marc Albrighton, on the left of midfield, and Shinji Okazaki, in the support striker role, that will be most at threat from the arrival of Musa. It’s worth remembering the heavy burden that was placed on both Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy last season, with the versatile Musa likely to allow Ranieri to ease the strain on his star duo, particularly towards the end of matches.

Musa’s main attribute is his searing pace, while he also has the ability to dribble past defenders and put dangerous crosses into the box. Like many young attackers, his delivery can be slightly inconsistent, but one strength of his game is an ability to hold onto the ball and retain possession for his side. Essentially, he looks an ideal fit for the Foxes, then, who are at their most dangerous when counter-attacking.

Delving into Musa’s underlying statistics from last season, he averaged a shot every 34.9 minutes, which was better than Mahrez (36.4), and also compared favourably to Jamie Vardy (28.6), who played as a central striker. Okazaki and Albrighton, meanwhile, only managed a goal attempt every 45.3 and 66.4 minutes respectively. In terms of key passes, Albrighton perhaps surprisingly led the way, registering a key pass every 44.7 minutes, compared to Mahrez (45), Vardy (65.4), Musa (67.2) and Okazaki (103.7).

Our opinion of Musa as a Fantasy prospect also depends on his classification in Fantasy games and likely position under Ranieri. Given that he started 16 league matches for CSKA as a central striker last term, there’s every chance he could be listed as a forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), which would limit his appeal if he claims the left wing berth from Albrighton, for example.

Ideally, he’d come in as a midfielder, then, with a price of around 7.5, thus offering what is likely to be a cheaper route into the Foxes’ attack if, as expected, Mahrez and Vardy are promoted to the premium price bracket as expected.

The Nigerian will need to acclimatise to life in England first, though, and may be eased into life in the top-flight off the bench. It won’t be easy to displace either Albrighton or Okazaki in Ranieri’s first-choice starting XI either, given the contributions the pair made last season.

Leicester’s opening fixtures are fairly favourable, with home matches against Swansea and Burnley and a trip to Hull on the opening day looking potentially profitable for Foxes attackers. The champions do also face Arsenal and Liverpool in the opening five Gameweeks, though, which may deter initial investment in a player just settling into his new surrounds.

Ultimately, whilst Musa’s arrival looks good news for the champions’ prospects, his acquisition certainly strengthens the notion that we may now see Ranieri revert to “Tinkerman” mode in order to cope with a busy schedule.

The worst was Doosra last season. Had him, decided he was out of form and not worth it, sold him. Kun gets 5. Doosra wildcards to get him back. Kun gets injured

His stats always look good, because he shoots a lot.

Obviously a good option, but I hate how every season this narrative gets banded about.

The year before, he didn't get over 1 goal in a game for about 2 months. At best he was a 6 point captain.

When he's going to be 13-14m, there is good reason to question putting him in.

With the site about to open tomorrow (Citation: Thursday) - I present once again the Hindu Monkey Rules of Fantasy Football:

    1. Never, EVER triple up on Arsenal unless it's a DGW
    2. Always take in a Jose/Pulis defender/keeper if they are currently managing in the league
    3. 3-5-2 - it looks pretty, but it doesn't really work does it
    4. Make sure the last two people on your bench are priced 4.5, 4
    5. Rotation Pairs. Dreadful, except for keepers. Pick 3-4 defenders you actually want
    6. If Aguero is at home to a bottom ten side you captain him. Always. Yes it's boring... but it's also the difference between making and breaking your season
    7. Don't stick with players who are bang out of form because they're due. Get rid. Identifying a player losing form quickly is one of the keys to the game
    8. In week two, if there's a bandwagon, jump on it - you're probably going to wildcard weeks 3-7 anyway
    9. Learn to spot the difference between a player who is playing for his mini league and one who is playing for overall rank
    10. Don't let your personal feelings (i.e. Terry is a plonker) get in the way of selection someone.
    11. Have fun.
    12. Please. It's just a game.

The problem with following 'rules' is that no season is the same. What works one season won't necessarily work in another season. We need to be proactive in adjusting.

agree every season is different - tail end of last season the dearth on strikers was a joke and the prices were so low across the board you could afford pretty much who you wanted (once KDB got injured)

I hope they make the midfielders more expensive this year - so many 7.5-8.5 mids last season who were very, very good

you never need that last defender - ever - they'll get subbed in maybe once all season and you'd transfer out somebody before then

last season my main rival had reece oxford from GW1 until GW34. He never, ever got on his pitch.

trust me, that is something that kills me every year.... oooh I'll have a 6m, 4.5, 4.5 on the bench just in case

        NO - 4.5, 4.5, 4

(agree largely on keeper comment, just think if you're going to rotate, rather keeper than defenders)

That is what I'm basically getting at above.

If the wildcard rules stay the same and there is a lot of market activity going into gw4 there's a fair chance we will all wildcard anyway lol

But you can still get that guy if you have a 4.5 defender. You could get a 4.0 pick, he drops then a 4.0 starter emerges and you don't have the cash to swap

Conversely your 4.0m defender punt could come off perfectly and be a solid starter not drop in price and not require a transfer.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

It's how I'll play the game save where I can to spend big where I can.

Wait till the prices come the week everyone will be trying to save every 0.5m they can.

A big striker would be a huge boost.

After that, I'd still think a right winger wouldn't go amiss. Striker is key though, could challenge for the title imo if one is signed.

To be fair i really think that UTD has the best strike force in the league now. I really do. I believe that Mkhi with Ibra is something that is not comparable to even KDB - Agu. But, thats just me tho.

Not so much sure on KDB, he has youth on his side but can be absolutely dreadful at times. Mkhitaryan will depend on how he does in the PL. I don't think I could say I'd rather one over the other right now.

I prefer Aguero as a player, his issue is injuries. Even then, a guy who regularly challenges for the golden boot despite lengthy layoffs is a real talent.

KDB is 2 years younger than Mkhi, not too significant.

Injuries is one of the reason i rate Ibra higher. But all valid points tho

Giroud managed to score 20+ goals twice in his career in a season in league. I think people generally put too much emphasize on PL proven or not. Ibra is just quality that is a blasphemy to put him in the same sentence as Giroud. In my book at least

Martial will score more goals this season than Sanchez imo.
Micky I also believe will out score tansy in points if not both goals and assists.
Giroud to be more effective than Zlatan is a possibility, but I think unlikely.

What's important here is 'team', Liverpool have made some good additions, their defense seems to have been strengthened, as had their midfield (though you could argue it lacks bite) and their offensive players look very good. But it has never been about having the best players, but rather the best team. And I don't highly rate United's squad right now.

  6. FPL Dullard XI - Early Thoughts

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Early Planning for a Dullard XI.

Ahead of the launch of FPL I thought I’d ask for some help for all us dullards out there to ensure we have the most boring, but effective team possible.

Obviously this is tricky without knowing prices so there’s no budget, but obviously we can assume that the likes of Aguero will be pricey and those from promoted teams will be among the more budget friendly picks.

Also feel free to let us dullards know the best strategy.

To get us started here’s a few names and tactics to consider.

3-4-3 has to be preferred. Tried, tested and safe - ideal for a dullard.

First name out of the hat – Yaya Toure. The king of dullards, who at least early in the season should get starts. Boring but annoyingly effective.

Elsewhere in midfield a player like Darren Fletcher looks ideal for the 4.5m slot. That’s hoping he is once again that price. A playing 4.5m midfielder strategy is the ultimate in dullardicity.

Another midfielder to consider is one from Liverpool. No, not those interesting ones that look flashy like Mane or Coutinho. Instead James Milner gets a place – those occasional assists and bonus points make him the stuff of legend down at Dullard City Central.

In attack it has to be Aguero and Ibrahamovic. Two reliable old stagers who a dullard can safely captain one of every week. This completely negates the need for interesting captain picks. Gray takes the third striker spot due to solid and boring Championship stats.

At the back a nice cheap goalie, who makes lots of saves. A top dullard will be keeping an eye on save points – which propels Burnley stopper Tom Heaton into my thinking.

Elsewhere in defence a top dullard will want consistency. Step forward Koscielny for those reliable clean sheets and occasional goals. West Ham and Southampton look great as a rotation pair. But even rotation is risky for a dullard – instead why not just hedge your dull bets and play both. Reid gets the nod over the far more exciting Cresswell for the Hammers, while Fonte’s BPS skills take precedence over the interesting forward runs and penalty possibility of Bertrand.

So here’s my Dullard XI so far, with one blank as I couldn’t think of another midfielder to rival those three for sheer dullness..

    Heaton
    Koscielny Reid Fonte
    YToure Milner Fletcher XXXX
    Aguero Ibrahamovic Gray

With that in mind who are your top dullard picks?

Hard to admit but Yaya seems to lose his 'dullard' label this couple of season when he become more of 'differential', moving towards to 'maverick' day by day.

Agreed....Toure is more than a bit maverick. Like I say below, midfield is a struggle for Dullards.

I'd say Sigurdsson and Alli fit the bill.

Yaya will never be a maverick. 🙂

He's perhaps there as a symbolic mascot of all the others can achieve in the pursuit of dullness. Perhaps Mark Noble could be an able Yaya deputy?

The midfield is tough for dullards. Far too many exciting options in there 😉

That forward line may just be the template from the off is the pricing allows for a decent enough midfield.

Surely a West Brom defender or keeper has to be in the dullard XI?

Would argue that with 20+ goals in the last 2 seasons and not knowing how Ibra will perform (although I'm hoping well) - Kane is more of a dullard pick.

Last season a few people were reluctant to jump on the Payet and De Bruyne train for whatever reason even though their stats for goals, assists and chances created was off the scale for both Marseille and Wolfsburg prior.

Likeiwse Mkhitaryan scored 20 odd goals and had 30 odd assists last season for Dortmund. Outrageous figures. The premier league is not as difficult as some believe and even if he produces half of those figures he will be an excellent pick.

Be interesting to see how he fairs.

This season could really turn out to be one of the best yet playing FPL. Three new managers making their teams even stronger - plenty of options.

Relies on people staying fit but with most looking towards Aguero and Ibrahimovic already that could leave plenty of big striker differentials - Kane, Sturridge, Costa, Batshuyai, (Arsenal striker).

After banging in 20+ goals in the last 2 seasons, imagine having Kane as your differential? Could be gold.

I'm very interested in Sturridge If he appears first choice.

      Don't fancy Vardy?

See - so many options I've completely missed one 🙂

Lukaku has to be up there too after last season - would hope he'd do better this season under Koeman. Barely seen him mentioned so far.

Bony could be an option too. Plenty of speculation that Koeman is insisting on his being part of any deal for Stones. If he loses some weight and rediscovers his form he could be good again

The thing is though is not everyone can do well. So I'd imagine somewhere along we'll find out who really are the contenders. But the midtable will certainly look interesting this year, the very top even more so.

Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Leicester, Everton

All these teams will be targeting Top 4. Half will miss out. I have no idea which 4 will make it, although I hope Man Utd are 1.
. But it should be a fascinating season

Everton won't challenge top4, WH have more of a chance.

I still think those teams with a new manager will take time to adapt and I think it will be a difficult season for City and Utd, so much pressure on them and a lot of problems in each of their squads that might not be addressed. Throwing money at a team doesn't always work.

Anyone think this team would be affordable?

    Mannone - 4m
    Azpi - Shaw - Dawson - Keane -4m
    KDB - Mkhi - Alli - 5.5m - 4.5m
Aguero - Sturridge - Benteke (at palace)

Also Shaw, nothing against him but he's just coming off a serious injury and players often get injured again after a long layoff, I'd pick someone else until you know he's up to speed.

Would lose Shaw for a 4.5 m def then.

But I'm hopeful after their poor shows last season. Mkhi could be 9m as well.

Yep, maybe Mané or Couts/Firmino would be an option over Mkhitaryan and look for someone else over Sturridge. Nothing based in fact but the potential rotation or just general not nailed on-ness of Sturridge and Origi might ward me off.

Keane might not start the season at Burnley. Everton & Leicester both interested, apparently turned down 15m for Leister who want him as competition for Huth & Morgan plus a European option.

If 20m is offered expect a sale but to somewhere he's not nailed on to start.

When I look at defenders I keep coming back to The Caulker Principle. Buying defenders for goal threat carries 2 risks.
If you rotate goalscoring defenders there's no guarantee you won't bench them the week they score which would be highly frustrating

Secondly, if they turn out to be in a poor defence you can fall into the trap of 'just one more week' in the hope they might score

Ayala, Kone, Dann, Dawson. All of these have that problem

    1. Licky

I'd only ever consider that factor as a bonus or a dealbreaker. Probably not the best to purchase mainly with that in mind.

It's frustrating, but you would think that if that player scored when benched, that you would have got a clean sheet from the player you started anyway, so the difference in theory won't be too much. Presuming the goalscorer also conceded in that game that is.

I chose defenders based on his team's CS potential and then pick one who has the highest points ceiling and is value for money.

That's quite hard to answer as it would depend on other factors - like the rest of my team.

I'd spend a little more for goal/assist threat if I could afford it though. 0.5m almost definitely. 1m would be a harder decision.

You have to buy a defender firstly for clean sheets and then with attacking potential on top. A great goal scoring defender would get say 5 goals a season. What are the chances of you having him at the right time? Clean sheets come first.

At the start I usually end up going with the cheaper options as I want to squeeze as much cash into my front 7 as possible. The more expensive defenders tend to come later when the attacking bargains emerge.

this - benched dawson for every goal last year I think - same with Huth

I plan to have a bench of 4.5 4.5. 4 filth this year and go with the three defenders I want every week, plus one cheap regular from a promoted one

let's be honest, if one of your main eleven gets injured you tend to transfer them out anyway - lesson I've learnt this season - keep your bench cheap as chips!

Pick defenders for the team they play for, not really the player itself.

What I mean is that if I will try to have the cheapest defender from the following teams: arsenal, man utd, man city, Chelsea. Perennial teams who don't concede as much as the rest.

For example, I plan to do

      Hart
Apzilicueta Shaw Monreal/Bellerin (depending on price) then cheap out the rest of my defence. I will ride out this idea for the whole season cos when it comes down to it, all U need is a CS from a defender, anything extra is a bonus. Can't rely on goal threat

      1. Morbius

Works unless a defender happens to be Baines who bombs down and crosses, and maybe on pens.
Sometimes - even picking the team rather than the player, you still need to weigh up who the player is, and who you could get alternatively.

I would like to go without Aguero due to price but Sunderland are such poor starters that Man City could get lots of goals. Maybe KDB and a city defender would be more sensible however so I can have a decent squad.

Last year Icardi had a 28% conversion rate, Higuain had just under 20%.

While Icardi may not have the totals of Higuain, it is absolutely understandable when you see the turgid football Inter play under Mancini.

I believe Icardi could absolutely come in and score 25 goals.

Higuain has years of experience scoring goals for one of the best teams around at the highest level plus 36 in 35 league games last season at Napoli.

Icardi has scored 9, 22 and 16 in his three Serie A seasons. Whilst he is younger and could improve I feel that we need a very un-Arsenal signing right now if we actually want to win the league.

But we have finite resources, so money spent now directly affects our ability to spend in the future.

And in his 2 seasons prior, Higuain scored 18 and 17 goals in a team that is both better, and more attacking.

Higuain is clearly better now, but the we have to accept where our club is financially, and spending that much on one player is insane. He's not as good as RvP was when we sold him, and look at how quickly he faded, and we're talking 4 times more expensive than RvP.

Icardi should cost less, we can keep Giroud, he'll only get better, and he'll have resale value or much longer at the club.

I mean imagine if Higuain needs an adjustment period, or if he gets an injury. It's a massive gamble.

Financially we are one of the healthiest clubs around. The whole narrative about finishing the Emirates stadium before we could make any world class signings is over and we have a lot in the bank. It's a question of whether we want to go for the league or are content with finishing 2nd/3rd/4th.

I would like to see Icardi at Arsenal and agree that him and giroud competing would be good but I don't think we would win the league within the next few years.

We're healthy financially, but in the modern market you still have to be careful, and we can't compete with Man U, Man City, and the top dogs of the world.

During the Emirates we had to fund buys by selling, and now we can buy without selling, but it doesn't mean we can go mental.

And while of course we want to compete for the league now, but I also want to compete for the league in 5 and 10 years time, so buying should should fulfil both the needs of the present and the future, and I think Icardi would do that.

I also think you might be underrating Icardi a bit, he is quality, and has attracted a lot of interest.

That being said, I think we'll probably start the season with Sanogo up front anyway. 😉 😀

It's an interesting dynamic, whether they should go and buy for the immediate present (still believe Arsenal would have won the PL last season with a top level striker) or the future. Your point is very valid with finances etc. but I wonder if Arsenal went out and splurged, won the title and had a good CL performance, perhaps that could attract more finance to the club in terms of sponsorships and global recognition and therefore in a convoluted way, be helping their future 😉

We've made the 3rd most expensive signing this summer. First 2 being Hulk (Shanghai) and Alex Teixiera (Jiangsu). Financially we're up there. I agree with what you said about Icardi, great player.

Higuain is 29, there is no way wenger or arsenal are stupid enough to spend £50m on a striker leaving his peak years

I would rather have higuain come in and get 20+ Pl goals from him. That would win us the league. Giroud isn't good enough. Ive watched him enough times. To win the league might cost U 50m but its bloody worth it and we have enough to splash that just for a season. The money shouldn't b an issue. We need something different. Tighter than a ____ Wenger is.

Casually checked Icardi's wikipedia page, a hopeful individual's already had time to change his current club to Arsenal. 😀

It's going to be so weird seeing leicester in the champs league this year... We also have friday night premier league matches, and all these new managers & mad signings for huge money... Roll on 13th aug!

P.s. I really hope FPL don't muck up the game by adding more gimmicks or dramatically changing the scoring or rules etc... If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I owned Wilson from the start last season and because he didn't do well straight away he lost value. I still got his haul but then he got injured shortly after. IIt does make it tricky to take on a relatively untested forward with reasonable ownership as they are probably more likely to lose value than many.

But he blanked for 2 games then loads of people wildcarded in GW30 and ditched him for Gomis. Then he went and scored a hattie

Yes he did. I was doing well at the beginning last season but I was losing value at the same time. It was strange
