Next up in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Manchester United.

First up, we cast an eye over the Red Devils team statistics and compare them to the rest of the Premier League in Louis van Gaal’s final season at the helm, before delving into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects under new manager, Jose Mourinho.

United ended the 2015/16 campaign in fifth position after racking up 66 points and were just nudged into the Europa League slots by rivals Man City on goal difference alone.

Whilst the Dutchman’s defence proved a handy source of Fantasy returns, the same can’t be said for United’s attack – they found the net on just 49 occasions, which was one more than Sunderland and down on their tally of 62 strikes in 2014/15.

Do we really think Zlatan can average almost a goal a game at United like he did at PSG?

PSG have a free ride in that league, and score when they want.

No because the PSG squad is better than the Man Utd one. If the PSG squad from last year played in the PL Zlatan would score at least on average a goal a game.

I truely believe that. Last year Man Utd were very lucky to have LvG keeping them tight at the back. Going forward they created next to nothing. If Zlatan doesnt do well it wont be down to him being older or the PL being 'tough' itll be because united arent creating chances for him.

I think Rooney could score 30+ goals in that league.

Apart from Silva, Matuidi, ADM(who failed at United), Lucas I wouldn't put anyone from that PSG in the United XI

I wouldnt say ADM failed at united but thats another discussion.

              Cavani, Veratti and Matuidi too.

Ibra will be a success if United play well.

Cavani is massively overrated. I said Matuidi, and Verratti is debatable.

Morgan, Herrera, Bastian aren't far off. Verratti is younger which is nice, but still not enough to make it that Zlatan could score 40+ goals a season with him in his side

Yes, he is, and has completely controlled games in the CL in England. Particularly against Chelsea, even when PSG had 10 men.

A lot of teams did that last season 😆

I see what you're saying and I stand corrected, but he's not world class or would "walk in" into that starting XI. He certainly isn't the reason Zlatan won't score 40 or whatever goals this season, which is what this post was all about

It wasn't last season though. 😆 I was talking about the season before (?) when they came back to win vs Chelsea after going down to 10 men.

They went out last season to City, Verratti didn't play because he was injured. They missed him, but that's already been pointed out.

25 goals is a great success! A goal a game? I don't care how good the team is he wouldn't do that in the Prem.

I'm pretty confident that Zlatan could not replicate the dominance that Suarez showed for Liverpool, and that was only 31 goals. And Suarez was in a (potentially) lesser team that year.

ADM didn't fail at United. He was their by far most creative attacking player, but was benched by LVG probably because he played too well.

Verratti, Rabiot and Aurier would walk in the ManU lineup. As would Pastore who can hardly make it on field at PSG. Motta would have last season too, but now age has caught him.

But it's not just the names of players. It's that that PSG lineup had perfected a style of play, it worked like a well oiled machine. The players found each other on the field easily which made every player that bit better.

You think Rabiot is better than Schneiderlin, Bastian or Herrera?

These are details now. My original point was Zlatan's incredible goal scoring record cant be sustained. And its not because his team mates aren't moving with him.

Firstly, City team is not "very below average". It's about the most dominant team in PL. Secondly, PSG were missing their whole midfield, which showed badly in their build up. That silently fluid passing game was nowhere to be seen, as players who had hardly ever played together were cutting the passing lines of each other and making bad passes. That's, literally and exactly, what cost them the win against City. They never got that game going that they had perfected before, because they missed the whole midfield that makes it work. In the 2nd City match, the only one who was up to that task was Rabiot.

That's where they ended, but only after not managing to win many matches that they dominated loudly. Luck is always a factor, but of course everything looks so neatly determined in hindsight. 🙄

No, of course not only luck. They had structural problems, and reliance on Yaya caught by age now. But to say they were below average is a joke. They still were really dominant in PL.

Mate, I meant below average for the standards of a top team. Which they should be with the money they spend.

Obviously not below average generally, otherwise they'd finish bottom half of the league. Thought that was obvious enough that it wouldn't need to be pointed out, but there we go.

Even below average for top teams. Where you draw that average line then? Between Bayern and Barcelona? In PL, there were three dominant teams, Arsenal, City, and Spurs. They were surprised by the lucky Leicester, and in the end Liverpool was probably the most dominant (but only for a very short part of the season), but that's it. If you say any of these three teams were very below average in terms of PL top teams, it's just stupid.

And ManU was a team who got extremely lucky to finish that high.

Breaking: Russia operated doping programme at Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014 - http://www.bbc.com/sport/36823453

'Russia operated a state-sponsored doping programme at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014, claims a new report.

The country's ministry of sport "directed, controlled and oversaw" the manipulation of urine samples provided by Russian athletes, an investigation commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency has found.'

That's of course if the ultras don't beat all other teams/fans before the final.

Not even surprised by this sort of stuff anymore Rups.....every sport is at it, to some degree or other.

Doping programmes are so sophisticated these days they can be masked from the tests, which are often underfunded and behind the science curve.

Looking further forward than Pokemon Go, they'll be releasing an Animal Crossing mobile game that should completely match the addictive mobile game with real money addon model + if the NX looks good..

Reposting my little 'article' if you can call it that from earlier today boys.....

As we all wait and wait and wait for the FPL site to go live I have spent the weekend having a look at certain key aspects which could be useful for a lot of us. Hope the below helps.

    1) Rotational Doubles

Every team has a rotational double which allows you to pair clubs to ensure you have 1 of the 2 players of that team playing at home each game week. Specifically for Gk/Defenders this could result in CS. Having looked at the fixtures over game week 1-10 i am highlighting below what to me seems to be potentially rewarding.

Southampton and West Ham would give you HOME games of:
    Watford-B'mouth-S'land-Watford-Swansea- Shampton-M'boro-Burnley-S'land.

Palace and S'land would give you HOME games of:
Wba-M'boro-B'mouth-Everton-Stoke-Palace-WBA-Wham for the 1st 8 Gw which for 2 budget Defenders/GK could be somewhat rewarding.

Leicter and M'boro would give you HOME games of:
Stoke-Arsenal-Swansea-Palace-Burnley-Spurs-Shampton-Watford-Palace-B'mouth which could again be budget combo to some points

Obviously the Premium rotational pair (although many are sceptical on City's defensive ability) is Man u and Man city, however this would give you a run of games which should allow some room for reward with HOME games of:
    S'land-Shampton-Wham-ManC- B'mouth-Leicter-Stoke-Everton-Shampton

2 Individual anchors (premium) which i have looked at are Chelsea and Everton only because of their run of Fixtures. Although they do not rotate if one refers to the ticker you will find a schedule which does favour both these teams in games both home and away. Obviously we await prices but there could be some reward in the likes of: Azpi,Coleman, Baines etc...

Other teams which rotate but not for all 38 games which have an immediate possible return in my opinion:
Arsenal and Everton/WBA 34 games rotational for those considering Bellerin/Kosc or even Cech.
Chelsea and W.ham rotate 30 games this season
Leicter and B'mouth/ rotate 30 games, although i do not like B'mouth schedule at the start of the season
Sunderland and Southampton/Leicter rotate 30 games this season which does appeal to me as i have been considering: PVA/Mannone

If you guys find this sort of thing useful let me know... i am doing my own internal stuff on other aspects which I'm happy to share such as: Stats on newly signed players, information about players from promoted teams/ players from each team to consider/ budget players etc....

    have a good day people!

oh and would love feedback on Who of the above has best run of games? and also who you would pick from each teams baring in mind budget!

    Something that's always bugged me...

Why isn't the pricing system on FPL just a case of "you can buy and sell a player at their current value".
It always seemed weird to me that if my players prices RISES by 0.1 then I don't see it reflected in my team value, but if it FALLS then I'm immediately impeded.

Why would it not be better to just always transact at current market value?

Seems to punish early adopters, those that anticipated a "bandwagon" before it started rolling, if you will. Meanwhile, it ruthlessly punishes the mistake of picking say, a player that you thought would get games but never actually gets any, thus causing loads of people to sell and for the players price to fall by 0.1 which is immediately reflected in your teams value.

    Hope that makes sense!

Helps even things out. Otherwise, the runaway early leaders will have insane affordability as well as a big points lead

There's fair less price variance between the bargain players and the premium players in Sky, for example. Something which I really don't like.

I thought that this would be the case.
I get it, but it's annoying.
What you've said basically translates as "To stop people who got it right early on, through knowledge and observation (and yes, some luck), from smashing it too hard. To allow people who got it horribly wrong in the first place to catch up with relative ease"

Yes, the early runaway leaders would have a massive points and budget advantage, and deservedly so in my opinion - they picked the right players and therefore deserve to have an advantage. (an advantage other than the points the bandwagon-attracting players have already scored for them, that is).

Gaining value on a player who is performing well enough to attract a bandwagon is NOT an advantage. Why would I want to take out say, Mahrez, to make use of his increased value, when he's scoring goals for fun?
Value is irrelevant unless you want to transfer your player out... which is where it becomes ridiculous...
It becomes a hindrance to early-adopters if said player gets a lengthy injury at some point. EVERYONE will have to take the player out of their team... but those that got him early-on have less funds to replace him with, compared to those that got said player just one GW ago.

I UNDERSTAND the arguments for this system, BUT I'm yet to hear one that explains why it wouldn't be better for it to just be "buy and sell at players current market value, end of discussion". This makes far more sense and reflects real life football management much better IMO. Newcastle purchased Sissoko for 1.5 million and are looking like they'll sell him for 20+... they saw how good the player is, and are set to receive a hefty profit because of it... NOT half of the difference between the price they purchased him for and the price they're selling him for, which is what happens in FPL.

Sorry for the essay but this really winds me up.

I love the rises. Big test of skill, those with little, tend to fall behind.
If you gain 0.2 in value, you still make profit.

Team Value, Player Form, Team Form, Fixtures, Captain Picks, Wildcarding,. All important nut not in that order. Adds to the game IMO.

      • 16 Years

Not for me. I like the way that a player has a different value to one fantasy manager than he does for another. It gives the early adopter more of a dilemma of whether to sell them or not based on the effect it has on their team value.

      1. nobwak
        • 10 Years

Thing is that I LOVE this game. The way I'm talking here sounds like I hate it! Just for the record - this pricing system is the only thing I'd change about it.

Take this example of a suspended player that's risen in price since the game began...
Guy that brought him in last week can sell at his current value, wait for suspension to be lifted, and bring him back in the following week.
Guy that had him in GW1 has to decide to either a) Keep him and sit on a suspension, or b) transfer him out, and then find a financial impossibility in bringing the player back a week later.

SURELY the band-wagon jumped in the above scenario has an advantage over the early adopter?!

The only thing wrong with Giroud is that he misses easy chances too much. He can more than cope with the PL. He does everything well until hes in front of the goal with the ball at his feet but U are right. Ruined a good point by mentioning Giroud.

Oh absolutely. Some players relish the competition and do well in it.

I just don't think Zlatan can achieve half what he managed at PSG. The ligue distorted his numbers

            1. pompeyfan

              9 years, 4 months ago

maybe, but look at his numbers elsewhere:

              Milan - 42 in 61
              Barca - 16 in 29
              Inter - 57 in 88
              Juve - 23 in 70
              Ajax - 35 in 74

If anything his record has got better with age, and with the bigger clubs.

agree. It's not the strongest of leagues but there have been lots of successful imports. Not sure that's because the PL is also not the strongest or because Ligue1 produces good players.

I'm not sure yet. Quite possible. I'll be leaving it a couple weeks before I decide so I know if I've got enough space to do one. I was surprised how quick I suddenly got to the maximum amount of 15 private leagues last year.

Hart Valdés/Heaton (assuming they'll be no more than 4.5, if not I'll get a nailed on 4.5)

    Monreal/Bellerin Shaw Azpilicueta 4.5 4.0

    Ozil/Silva KDB Mhkitaryan 5.5 4.5

    Aguero Sturridge/Berahino Gray

Good start. Monreal if Bellerin is 7.0. KDB over Silva if they're the same price. Wouldn't sign a Pulis striker, but would get Berahino if he leaves at anywhere up to 7.5.

      Taking quite conservative estimates:

      GK = 10

      FW = 27

if you could only take 1 of Mahrez/ Vardy and 1 of Kane/Alli and 1 of KDB/Kun and 1 of Miki/Zlatan (obviously price mattering) which do you take?

If you could pick 1 of Bailly/Azpi and 1 of Bellerin/Coleman and 1 of Bertrand/Creswell who would you take? (price not mattering here) but schedules...

So, Ibrahimovic will be 35 in a few weeks. That in itself tells me that he surely isn't quite as sprightly as he used to be (he's geriatric for a striker actually) and that he will not start quite a few games this season.

If I was a betting man I'd have 50p e/w on his career ending just as it started with Malmo in 2000. 26 games, 12 goals.

This is one of my worries with Mickey T. No doubt an excellent player, but his GW1 ownership may well be greatly inflated over what it should be - and if he Depays or Kagawas then his price will only go South. I'd rather not have to waste an early transfer taking part in this fire sale should it happen.

I think 6.5 will end up tops and Bellers and Toby will fit there IMO. The first 46 mil will become pretty template early on but the other choices will determine where the success lies.

With the change of manager and addition of Mkhitaryan and Zlatan, this article's numbers are hardly useful. 😉

No it's not. Of course I have not read the article, rarely do but this time I actually have a reason...
Just the LvG to Mou move made it quite redundant.
