Earlier this month, West Brom made QPR winger Matt Phillips their first summer signing, with the Scotland international joining the Baggies for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £6 million. Phillips has penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns.

Speaking to the club’s official website about what supporters can expect from him, Phillips is looking to make an immediate impact in the final third:

“My game is about pace and power and strength, looking to take people on, getting shots off and getting crosses in. Assists and goals – that’s what I will be counting on. I want to get my place in the starting XI and build from there. But I’m not the finished article by any means. I’m 25 and I still feel I can bring more to my game.”

The History

Born in Aylesbury, Phillips joined Wycombe Wanderers as an eight-year-old, and progressed all the way through to the first-team, making his professional debut at the age of 17 as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Notts County in April 2008.

In total, Phillips made 84 appearances for the Chairboys, scoring eight goals and registering six assists, before moving to then Premier League outfit Blackpool in August 2010 in a deal rising to £700,000.

He was quick to settle for the Seasiders, scoring on his Premier League debut as a late substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers. The Scotland international went on to make 27 appearances in the top flight in 2010/11, scoring twice and providing three assists.

Blackpool only lasted one year at the top table of English football, though, and while Phillips was linked with moves to other Premier League sides, he spent two more seasons with the club and, aside from a short loan spell at Sheffield United in 2011, produced 28 goals and 12 assists over 87 matches in all competitions.

Phillips finally moved on in the summer of 2013, joining QPR for a reported fee of £5 million. He played 22 matches for the Hoops in 2013/14, bagging three goals and two assists as they gained promotion back to the top flight. The following season was more impressive for Phillips given the step up in class, scoring three goals and laying on eight assists in 25 Premier League matches. QPR again suffered relegation back to the Championship, though, with Phillips showing flashes of his abilities last term, producing eight goals and five assists in 44 league appearances.

Despite representing England at Under 19 and Under 20 levels, Phillips chose to represent Scotland at international level due to his eligibility through his grandparents. He made his debut in a 5-1 defeat to USA in May 2012, but has only made three further appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that the Baggies scored just 34 times last term – a tally better only than relegated Aston Villa (27) – the need for more firepower in the final third is apparent. Indeed, with the Baggies ranked bottom for shots on target and second-bottom for total attempts, Tony Pulis will be hoping the addition of Phillips should help improve Albion’s cutting edge.

The 25-year-old has been utilised on the right wing in both pre-season friendlies so far, although recent comments from the club’s technical director Nick Hammond indicate he could also be utilised up top are worth keeping an eye on, particularly if Saido Berahino is sold before the end of the transfer window.

Phillips should bring a much-needed pace to West Brom’s attack and is likely to be competing against the likes of James Morrison, Jonathan Leko, Craig Gardner and Callum McManaman for a starting berth, with Pulis generally favouring a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 formation last season. James McClean looks the obvious candidate to start on the left wing, although most of Albion’s wide men have the ability to play on either flank.

During the 2014/15 season Phillips spent with QPR in the Premier League, he averaged a shot every 45.8 minutes, which was only bettered by McManaman (40.1) among Baggies midfielders last term. In terms of creativity, Phillips averaged a key pass every 53.6 minutes, which was again second only to McManaman (34.5) last term, though it’s worth noting the latter only made 12 appearances last season, slightly skewing his statistics.

Phillips has been priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this time around, potentially offering us a viable option from the West Brom midfield that was absent for so much of last season.

Looking at Albion’s opening fixtures (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM), there may certainly be a temptation among FPL bosses to consider a Baggies attacker in their initial drafts, with no matches against last season’s top five and three home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks.

Nonetheless, history suggests that owning an attacker from a Pulis side has never proved to be a particularly successful strategy for Fantasy managers, and given the number of options available in the same price bracket in midfield, it’ll take some eye-catching performances from Phillips during pre-season to force a change in outlook.

So, if Ings, Tekkers and Bony kindly would find new clubs in premiership.
I would have no problem havving a midfield of Miki, Haz, Silva, Özil and Firmino.....

I will definitely be having some Bentekkers if he moves! I'm not sure on Ozil from the start as Arsenal seem to have a few players out with injury/fatigue.

It was only an experiment to see what if...
As all 3 strikers are capable of 15+ goals if being the focal point in a club. Would be a tough decision to bench someone each week.
Not that fond of Özil either.

D'ya know, i actually see the appeal of people building their team for the first few GW's to gain the best start potentially possible, and then wildcarding after those few GW's and jumping on the likely 'must have's'.
Because let's face it, loads wildcard soon into the season anyway because they are disappointed with how their teams are etc.

Is this the way a lot of people are going or am i just going over old ground here? Seems i'll be going with this logic this season instead of building what i think is a mighty team, only for it to be torn apart anyway after a few GW's in anyway, if people are happy wildcarding early i see nothing wrong with this strategy.

I do it almost every year, between GW3 and 5. Never regret it and gives you an opportunity to get the high-risers early, build team value and keep up with the pack. It's the last 5-10 GWs that you can get strategic and pull yourself up the ranks with a large war chest at your disposal.

Totally agree. Especially with the new WCing rules brought in last year. A planned WC between GW 3 and 4 is what I'm looking at.

        I'm doing it too.

Sure, it's 'cool' to hang on. Use it late.

But I'd rather jump on early bandwagons. Truth is, we don't know what managers are really thinking until they show us Aug 13th. Until then, lots of speculation.

Plus, lots of new managers this year with the big clubs. Good to jump on trends early then tweak..

    3. George Sillett

I always intend to hold on to the first wildcard but usually it only takes 1 or 2 weeks to realise that I picked a bag of sh**e in the first place.

    4. Scratch
      • 16 Years

IF you get off to a flier then your players are scoring well, which means other managers will be buying the guys you have, which means you'll probably want to hold off from wildcarding...

    5. GW 1 = AOA
      GW 2 = WC

This way, you have carte blanche to build an AOA team specifically for GW1 only, and then use your WC to pick up all the price rises in the busiest transfer week of the year.

But, if you suggest this you get a lot of arrogant replies - probably from the same people who were swearing by the GW1 template last season, and that a GW36 WC would never work.

Last summer I suggested using AOA in GW1 could be a good idea but many on here dismissed it.

To be fair though, I too held it back in the end and got reasonable value from it later in the season. Nevertheless, I still like the idea of using AOA in GW1 and will explore the option again before the season starts.

Almost every season there is at least one low cost midfielder and forward the majority did not consider who starts tearing it up which you will want to transfer in. Often for a premium or mid price player who does not seem to be returning well which feed into the the ability to free up money for a heavy hitter who people who may think is too costly now but scores so well is unavoidable.

That's the pattern. If you can guess the Mahrez of this season though your off to a flying start.

Stats guys, you might want some of this crazy data from last season:

Expected goals (xG) maps, which shows you where a player scored/shot from last season, as well as which resulted in goals:

    https://public.tableau.com/profile/paul.riley#!/vizhome/PremierLeague201516xGMap/PremierLeague201516ShotonTargetxGDashboard

Expected goals table, which shows you numerically how many goals a player should score from both Open Play as well as in general, whilst also showing efficiency:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1daolRW_5ZVTgfg8HedD9fWUjP9odl_zFVHCwa0V8xUM/edit#gid=1575427859

Expected assists (xA) maps, which you can filter by player to see where they created their chances from and to:

    https://public.tableau.com/profile/paul.riley#!/vizhome/201516PremierLeagueKeyPasses/PremierLeagueKPnAssists

Expect assists table, which has this data in numeric form and can be filtered by Open Play or in General as well as showing which players are assisting above their expected rate(or should I say, the chances they create are being converted at a higher than average rate):

Rumours that we have made a bid for Dortmunds Ginter and are after a RB. Antonio has been poor there pre season and i think Bilic has come to his senses. So it looks like it could be Feghouli, Tore and Antonio fighting for one spot. The only good thing about Feghouli is there are quite a few decent 5.5 mids for a straight swap if needs be.

        No, certainly not.

Just pointing out that it looks tricky picking the premium defenders that you'd be most confident in getting a CS in the opening week or two.

        1. Tricky knowing who will play as well - I don't see many guaranteed starters in Man C and Man U defences.

Draft leagues are so different. Also depends on scoring model of course.
I would not pick Kun in a draft league for example, as he is so injury prone. Özil, Lukaku, Alexis all good picks as they don't really do injurys. Players without Europa is also nice as they have less games to get injured in.

I reckon you have to pick Kun in a draft. Such explosive potential. I agree re injuries and guaranteed starts around Europe etc. Think Hazard could be a good shout this year for that reason.

No you don't have to. I have opted to go without in draft leagues where I've had nr1 pick and yet won said league. Actually got Nacho instead last season in one, at a much later point to try and catch points the weeks Kun is injured. Can't remember how that worked out though.
But it is an alternative way to go and it will annoy the hell out of the one sitting with Kun when he is injured.

Just focus on players that rarely get injured.

Good luck if you think Koeman's gonna have everything fixed up just by pre-season. The Everton defence was a mess under Martinez. I'd sorta consider Baines for the attacking potential mixed with easy fixtures but sod banking on cleanies out of the gates.

I like some of what you're putting down, but I'd make changes to Gabriel, Wimmer (Both have established vets ahead of them).

Stones only if he goes to City.

I heard something about Mertesacker being captain, if that happens then Wenger needs a slap in the face. Gabriel should be the 2nd choice CB. Wimmer has the first 6 weeks to himself. Don't overlook the new Everton set up. Double up could hurt, more so IMO because of the lack of save points for DDG.

He hurt his ankle on July 1, says 6 weeks, so let's say mid Aug at best and maybe end of August at worst? -- that isn't 6 games 😉

But I hear you, I had Wimmer in a first draft myself--

If you're WCing early, I guess all of this matters much less of course.

There was a proper class divide last season in attacks and I expect Man U to jump across it this season but not Bournemouth. Sure you can get some players doing well in that bottom half, Ayew, Ighalo and Arnie just as example but they do the pulling rather than being the product of an attacking team.

Obviously I don't think Bournemouth can jump to 70 goals.

But can see them getting 50+ which is offensive for a team expected to finish bottom half

A bottom half side who get on the wrong end of end to end matches. Attacking intentions is step away from being a coherent attacking side.
