Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Lads, I'm looking at gameweeks 1-3 only. Will wildcard after gameweek 3 in the international break. Currently on this.

    ----------------Foster-------------------
    --------Terry VanDijk Souare--------
    Mahrez Ayew Mkhitaryan Hazard
    ---------Gray Aguero Wilson--------
    --------------------------------------------
    Jakupovic Capoue Ferndandez Kone

    * Foster plays all 3 games, WBA top of defence ticker 3 games)
    * Terry plays all 3, although I'm open to change him to Fuchs or Shaw
    * VVD and Ferndandez rotate to give ( WAT, BUR, SUN)
    * Souare and Kone rotate to give (WBA, MID, BOU)
    * The mid has a good mix of Leicester, United, Chelsea and Swansea who all have the best attacking fixtures. Mahrez also plays Hull first, who are a shambles. Ayew plays Hull gw2 and at oop is a genuine captain option. Same goes for Hazard playing (BUR) in gw3. Mkhitaryan is in there for the safe, cheapest United attack plus his stats are great.
    * The 2 cheapies alongside Aguero are both penalty takers and the big fishes in the small ponds for their teams. Gray has two homes in a row too.

    I'm open to suggestions for;

The best 5.5 defender to play all 3 games (currently Terry)
    The best 2x 6.5 forwards
Any other strategies that I may be overlooking.

Please bare in mind I'm wildcarding after gw3 so onl

Also if your a hammer, not sure why you arent thinking about the feg master!

You could go cheap with him and zaha/bolas/town say and play pal/whu/pal for pretty cheap rotation and prime fix for between 11-12 million, so save on the mar/cap 14 million if my head math is right

Id rank Shaw and Baines above Terry in the play all 3 games cause im worried Terry wouldnt play all 3

Sourare isnt offering much of anything, but i guess its short term and fix are decent, but dont over hope

Dont love Wilson to start, everyone else seems to love Long, so feel free to love him with everyone else

I really like teh ayew pick, never had him once last year and cant stay away this for some reason.

Do wonder if u can do better by dropping wilson and marez and swapping them around and having a prem striker and a cheap mid

      1. Jay_
        9 years, 11 months ago

Thanks for the detailed reply Sleno 🙂 Baines let Mirralas take a FK today which is a bad sign, Shaw I quite like but has 2 aways. Would love Dann over Souare but just can't find the 1m. I could swap Wilson and Mahrez to Vardy and a 6m mid but after seeing how Fresh Mahrez was today I'm hooked on him. Plus I don't really rate any the 6- mids to start well. Regarding Feg and West Ham, with City and Chelsea away I'm not considering any of our players until my wildcard. That is one of the main perks of a gw4 WC, West Ham and Arsenal fixture swing and Payet and Sanchez fit and firing by then.

Yeah for sure, Payet will be welcomed into my team gw4 for sure, im also a fixture man, so happy to sit on the Feg for just the 1 week where he will run rings around Bourn and hopefully in return net me a 0.1 or two when i upgrade him 🙂

Why won't Terry play all 3? Unless Conte lures Bonucci away from Italy I can't see that happening.

Any other strategies you might be overlooking: saving your wildcard? You get 3 chances to pick 15 players over the course of 38 weeks. Granted you'll have a lot of new information come week 3, but it still seems awfully short-sighted to me. Just my two cents

      1. Jay_
        9 years, 11 months ago

Thanks mate, every other season I've planned up until gw10 but always used the WC either in gw2 or gw3. By the time 3 weeks are up we should know so much more information, bargains, good defences, nailed on cheapies, form etc.

Agree completely. I usually try to plan for 6 weeks or so... if I get it right, great, if not, wildcard. But at least that leaves me with the option of saving it.

So i did the whole plan of WC after 3 last year, i was acutally doing pretty good, not sure where, but maybe 30k or so and a few people thought i was wasting my WC, by week 8, i was 14th OR, guess it worked out ok

      Keepers are fine. 1.0/1.5
Nice defence but I don't like Souare and Fernandez as stand alone options & Kone's fixtures poor. Although the rotations are fine. 1/2
Lovely midfield. 😀 3.5/3.5 - But is it hampering your team? I think a midpriced striker would do you fine along with Aguero and Wilson.
Light attack but this is a midfieler heavy team innit. 2/3

        Eden...what you think of the below geeza;

        Foster / Pickford

        Walker / Williams / Friend / Paredes / (5.5)

        Hazard / Ayew / Mkhit / Mahrez / (4.5)

        Aguero / Berahino / (6.5)

        1) Terry or Shaw
        2) Hojbjerg or Carrick
        3) Negrado or Long or Kone or Gomis - so difficult!!!!

          Shaw
          Hojbjerg
          Negredo

Nice team. Jakupovic will actually start , so him over Pickford. 0.75/1.5 on the keepers
          Nice defence. 2/2.5
No problems with that midfield! 3.5/3.5
Nah..no Beraino for me. That front 3 needs work IMO. Downgrade Mahrez/Hazard. 1/3

Beranio I'm hoping will get the move away to CP or STK. Think he'll start banging in & will then be nicely priced. If not will bring in Long?

      Not sure about the perfection. Midfield looking light to me...Solid up top though. Looks like you've had to take the hit here for your strike force. I'd consider downgrading one. There are some decently prices strikers out there to free up some cash for you...as per below;

      Foster / Pickford

      Aguero / Berahino / (6.5)

Not sure about Costa also. Negrado could be a great shout I'm also tempted.Højbjerg is a cheap MID. Also Carrick could become instrumental for UTD going forward this season

    Valdes
    Fuchs Francis Pieters
    De Bruyne Ozil Mahrez Payet
    Aguero Gray Rhodes

    Pickford Capoue Walsilewski Parades

Not too sure about Mahrez, will he have a good season? Too pricey? Also am I too heavily reliant on superstars (i.e midfield). Is it best to have a better balanced team?

Payet? West Ham have a really difficult opening three game weeks. I'd take Mkhitaryan?

Also not sure KDB is going to have a stormer. Feel like you've boxed off with Kun. Ayew or Tadic would free up some much needed cash to upgrade your strike or defence?

Keep chopping and changing...such a difficult one to nail down at the minute. Lots of new signings and probably more big moves to come. BUT, I've got this so far, think fairly good balance front to back and strong in MID

    Foster / Pickford

    Walker / Williams / Friend / Paredes / (5.5)

    Hazard / Ayew / Mkhit / Mahrez / (4.5)

    Aguero / Berahino / (6.5)

    1) Terry or Shaw
    2) Hojbjerg or Carrick
    3) Negrado or Long or Kone or Gomis - so difficult!!!!

      1) Shaw- higher attaching potential, also shouldn't miss too many games. Terry may be rested here and there due to his age.

      2) Probably Hojbjerg, more minutes.

      3) Some decent options there but what about Andre Gray or Callum Wilson, fancy they could score a fair few goals this season.

Hey guys, I've just made my first draft and have decided that I'll be playing a 3-5-2 (but 4-4-2 for GW1).

    Forster / (Jakupovic)

    Azpi / Shaw / Williams / Souare / (Wilson)

    Mahrez / Micky / Ayew / Bojan

    Aguero / Vardy / (Stuani)

    Any feedback is appreciated! 🙂

Would be better off going for two keepers of 4.5m that rotate well rather than Cech. Not sure Kante will do much more than pick up his 2pts and a point here and there for clean sheets.

Not sure Rhodes will be first choice at Boro either, Negredo could limit his pitch time, Gray or Wilson would be a better shout.

    RMT please!

    Mandanda, Foster

    Shaw, Friend, Tarkowski, Kone, Robertson

Payet, De Bruyne, Mahrez, Redmond, Townsend

    Aguero, Carroll, Gray

Into my 3rd season playing the BPL fantasy game, improved on my first season last year but want to get off to a good start as usually I start badly.

Should I make changes to my team? Like would it be a good idea to get one more premium defender, should I go for another premium striker? And get a mid range midfielder instead of one of the expensive ones I've got?

Also is it worth having Mkhitaryan or Ibrahimovic early on? Usually I prefer to see how new foreign signings settle...

More than happy to rate others teams too!

      Nice team,

I would put in another premium defender, slightly weak at the back

Townsend I don't feel is a guaranteed (Palace rotate wingers a lot) so maybe a cheaper replacement for the bench (5.5)

Nice strike-force, mine is the same without Carroll as injuries are an issue with him

      RMT?

      Mandanda / Heaton

      Alderweireld / Koscielny / Shaw / Friend / Parades

      Mkhitaryan / Firmino / Eriksen / Redmond / Snodgrass

      Aguero / Gray / Negredo

      - Friend will replace Koscielny in starting lineup for GW 1&2
      - Snodgrass is the sub in midfield (I believe he might be taking set-pieces for Hull)

Yeah another premium defender is a good shout, I might save on Redmond and get a cheaper one there, take your point on Townsend but I'm expecting him to be Palace's key attacker. Set pieces too possibly...

That is the problem with Carroll, hoping a full pre-season will be enough to keep him fit.

Solid team, defence and keeper very good, maybe Tarkowski instead of Paredes- who surely won't play much?

Firmino is a good shout, hard to know whether Mkhitaryan will fire straight away (new signing etc) I prefer tried and tested at the very start. Maybe Feghouli could be an option too for your midfield instead of Redmond or maybe Snodgrass (can't remember if he is 5m or 5.5m).

Also maybe Sigurdsson instead of Eriksen, very good opening two fixtures (Burnley and Hull) and under Guidolin he scored very frequently.

Good strike force, unsure on Negredo but he could be a risk worth taking...

Looks good! Keep an eye on pre-season selections for a few of those - Watmore and Long especially. And Cresswell's injury.

    RMT PLEASE

GK: FORSTER, ( Sub :NORDFELDT Not ideal but no budget)

MID: MAHREZ, HAZARD, TADIC( Subs: Capoue,Kante)
    FOR: AGUERO, LUKAKU, WILSON

I would love to get a stronger midfield and maybe accomodate for Zlatan but I am unsure on what to do.

    Also would you rather

Fairly decent! Like Bellerin as a pick, no Chelsea defence maybe a concern tho, and would upgrade a 4th mid to give an extra option.

Cresswell an injury to keep an eye on, and also think that palace, Southampton have better earlier fixtures than the hammers, and considering cresswell price would downgrade and upgrade Capoue or Kante.

      Hope that helps

I would get rid of Firmino, (not worth it IMO). Better priced options are Tadic, Lamela, Feghouli. Your attack is quite weak for me and I would downgrade Toby or Kos to someone like Dawson (wba) or n taylor who have preferable opening fixtures. Then you can upgrade in attack.

Capoue seems to have been given more licence to get forward by Materazzi in pre-season. He's already grabbed two goals, and for a 4.5 fifth mid I can't see anyone better. Who would you go over him? And yeah not 100% set on Austin, there are lots of options for forwards at 6.5m, but at the minute it's Austin. Thanks

Andre Gray will be 'big fish' for Burnley and was the top scorer in the Championship last season. I agree there aren't many 4.5m midfielders who are going to thrive however I would go for Hojberg or take a risk on a youngster like Leko from West Brom who has been awesome in pre-season.

I would rather have Long instead of Austin. And Swansea have Leicester, Chelsea, Southampton and City in the first 6 matches. You could replace ayew with Fabregas. He'll pick alot of bonus points with the new bonus system.

I just think Austin is more of a goalscorer, but will be monitoring. Initially I did go Long. To be honest, I actually envisage shipping Ayew in GW3, and Fabregas is definitely on my shortlist to replace him. I just want to operate a bit of a wait and see for Chelsea, and not too keen on the first 2 attacking wise. Thanks for the feedback

Yeh, it's hard with Chelsea becasue we aren't sure who is nailed on to start upfront and they certainly are not finished their business. I considered Willian.

    Think I've cracked it!

    Foster/Heaton

    Shaw, Stones, Azpi, Freind, Souare'

    KDB, Mahrez, Redmond, Townsend, Watson

Aguero, Lukaku, Negredo/Gray/Long (Decide nearer the time)

    Thoughts?

For me KDB is a questionable.
I would rather have Hazard or Miki myself.

Yours defence and goalkeepers are strong and you have selected your cheap mids well.

I would probably go for Long out of the three attackers.

    Thoughts on this
    Courtois (playing one all season)
    Stones (city) Shaw Terry
Ayew, Payet, De Bruyne, Mikatarian, Hobjerg
    Zlatan, Negredo

    Subs
Baines , Friend , hull keeper, Campbell
