Up next in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Tottenham.

We kick start our analysis by assessing the north London outfit’s team statistics in Mauricio Pochettino’s second season in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just three weeks’ time.

Pochettino’s side finished third last time around, 11 points behind champions Leicester and one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.

That fails to tell the full story, though, as Spurs were still in with a chance of winning the title right up until their Gameweek 36 trip to Chelsea, where a 2-2 draw at the Bridge, which saw the visitors pick up nine yellow cards, handed the crown to Claudio Ranieri’s men.

Subsequent losses to Southampton and relegated Newcastle – a 5-1 hammering at St James’ – meant their season ended in bitter disappointment, with the Gunners climbing above them to clinch the runners-up slot on the final day of 2015/16.

Going by past seasons what do ye reckon

    1. Buy at least 2 Mourinho players, he barely changes his squad and there's no CL distractions. FPL gold.
    2. Avoid getting too many Pep players for the same reason. Nobody attacking at Bayern was safe from rotation, including guys like Muller and Lewandowski.
    3. Trust Pardew players up until Christmas then hold a firesale.
    4. Don't trust Sunderland players until well after Christmas.
    5. Be wary of Hughes/Stoke players. He often neglects to mention key players have picked up niggles in his Friday pressers, then you're dumbfounded when Arnie / Shaqiri etc doesn't appear in the matchday squad.
    6. Trust Pulis/WBA and Swansea against the weaker teams, the ticker usually works well for them.
    7. Apart from the absolute whipping boys, the ticker is rarely useful for Liverpool.
    8. Jump on Everton and Arsenal while they're hot.

If his season starts poor, it could be his best chance into CL. Big if though, you'd assume he does well.

    Here's mine FWIW...

    1. Spend as little as possible on keepers - 8.5 - even if they don't get a CS they can get saves
    2. Early on, also, don't spend too much on defenders - CSs are difficult to predict especially early on so look for bargains, fixtures and rotations and be prepared to use a few transfers on them early on
    3. Pick your premium mids / fwds based on quality and early fixtures - 3-4 weeks especially. Form is not relevant yet.
    4. Try to have flexibility in your squad and in your thinking - can you change your players for similar but better options early on? Have you got players at various price points to facilitate this?
    5. Accept that you'll probably wildcard pretty early on - maybe after 4-6 weeks
    6. Don't be afraid to take a couple of hits to correct any mistakes or hop on bandwagons
    7. But don't panic if you have an ordinary start - it's a long season
    8. Aguero - get him, it's easier to lose him than it is to rearrange your whole team to get him afterwards
    9. Don't try to be too clever - 343 works
    10. Go for mainly tried and trusted options with just one or two punts

      Very good post!
      1. I think it's worth it to spend an additional 0.5 on GKs tho, in order to get two playing options rather than just one (yes I know Jaku is 4.0, but bad fixtures, and bad team)

      6. My best season ever I had like 65 transfers. Don't think about the -4 as for one GW only, ask yourself if the player you're transferring in will outscore your old player by 4 or more points over the next 3-4 GWs instead.

      7. Last year I had my worst start of the season ever, but from my experience GW1-3 or so seem to be a lot about luck, with new/bad FPL-players from my MLs getting enormous amounts of points. Once things have settled, the more experienced players seem to thrive however, and catch up.

      8. Aguero is a must-have from the start imo, with him looking like the best option for captain in GW1.

Is 424 some mythical formation? Did peeps make it up by playing FIFA? Can you really have a formation that's 'that' attacking? History seems to answer this with a resoundingly 'yes' vote.

Well, a prime example of a modern take on a 424 system is during Pep's stint at Barcelona. At times he'd use this experimental shape as his backup, like he did so vs Stuttgart in the first knock-out round of the CL in 2010. This is a good visual as to how the classic 442 with a rigid midfield deployed by Christian Gross's Stuttart, contrasts with Pep's more fluid, & adaptable 424 (with Barcelona's ideals heavily implemented of course).

    (courtesy of Michael Cox)
    http://www.zonalmarking.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/barcelona-4-0-stuttgart-tactics-lionel-messi.jpg

    http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/03/19/barcelona-4-2-4-formation-guardiola-messi/barca_average_positions_4-2-4/

The four forwards here are largely all operating on the same horizontal space in the final third. Wingers are pushed up way, way, way further forward unlike a 442 (or diamond 442). Apart from Iniesta's unique role here - playing a little bit deeper than the forward three as he'll be the playmaker & the one bringing the ball in from the left to make those diagonal runs thereby connecting the line with the forwards. This is very much a stark contrast to your traditional 4231 shapes which will have a clearly defined lone-striker up top, a central player behind him 'in the hole' usually & the two narrow wingers who will occupy the space differently in attack as opposed to a winger in the 424. So there's a clear line of three behind the striker pretty much.

No, 424 isn't a myth, & yes it's different to your stereotypical 442. There's various examples in international football of this 'fictitious' formation being utilized effectively. In the most basic sense without going into too much detail, they're both different systems that will utilize the wingers & forwards differently. Allowing for a more dynamic attack.

Another example of a top-team deploying the 424 shape was Brazil in the 1970 world cup (where coincidentally, they won). A more 'by-the-book' 424 if you will, & contrary to Pep's 424 which would play like an asymmetric 433 at times, Brazil's 424 would play as a 4231 when not in possession.

Both of them haven't been great for a couple of seasons now. Baines may get pens back, if not I'd put both on the watchlist rather than start with them. See how they pan out.

The first few games of the season with give a good indicator to this. Also if Stones is on his bike Funes Mori could be a viable cheaper option.

Hi guys . New to this site . Happy to become a member .

How does this look like ? Constructive criticism welcome .

            Foster / Boruc
            Shaw / Friend / McAuley / Williams / Souaré
Townsend / De Bruyne / Mkhitaryan / Hazard / Shaqiri
            Agüero / Long / Campbell

I know its light in defence and really heavy in Midfield but i plan to try and play all my 5 Mids every week and i think having a strong Mid is the way to go this season . Any comments most welcome .

Your defence is still £2.0 more than mine - not that cheap really. Strong midfield definitely the way to go though

Apart from Williams I like your defence .Midfield is strong , 2 of the forwards enable the midfield. Only issue I can see which will cause you problems is an injury to to a mid or Aguero or Long.
Quite like the gambling nature of it.
              Good luck.

            Hi all, repost;

How's this team looking? Rejigged my midfield by dropping Hazard > Siggy to get a decent 2nd striker. Any feedback appreciated!

            Heaton - Jaku

            Shaw - Friend - McAuley - Morgan - Francis

            KDB - Mkhi - Siggy - Townsend - Hojbjerg

Looks a lot like mine, so I like it a lot. 🙂
But here are the points that worry me about my own team:
              - I'm not sure about Shaw. If he is not a sure starter, then the defence is really thin.
              - I'm unconvinced of the clean sheet potential of those keepers.
              - Southampton's home fixtures are nice, but their away fixtures are dire (mun ars). Having two Saints attackers might not look so nice for gw2 and gw4

Every team on here has Shaw. Are we really sure that he will cement a starting spot?
There are reasons to belive othwise - just coming back from a major injury, new manager, new arrivals on defence. I don't think it as much of a sure thing as people seem to expect.

                No... but yes?

JM made a bid for Shaw at Chelsea.

Also, we rarely see JM rotate his backline.
Once we see the Utd's back 4 I believe we can feel comfortable that Shaw will have his place.

Finally, who outside of Smalling can we really feel certain about? So, Shaw's as safe as any at this point...

I agree that Mou tends to have a constant back 4. And the Community Shield may give us a decent idea of what that back 4 will be.
No sense in worrying about it. Plenty of time to come up with a plan B if needed.

Ok guys, my last draft before I leave on a holiday, thoughts? 😀

                Foster Jaku
                Azpi Shaw Williams Friend Wilson
                Mahrez Mhki Ayew Redmond Leko
                Aguero Lukaku Negredo

Switched back to a 3-4-3, planning on wildcarding gw3, Mahrez just there for gw 1 with 1.0 itb to make the switch to KDB/Hazard

                      No Arsenal either

But you can't have it all

Not really worried there since the heavy hitters might miss out on the first game, but indeed, can't have them all 😀 Dropped Townsend as well. WBA and Tottenham can be pretty tight in the back.

                          Agreed

I'm gonna go for Walker instead of Shaw. Not convinced with Mani defense for few weeks. I think they will take time to settle.

                Opinions on this lineup folks:

                Mandanda - Jakupovic
                Shaw - Terry - Stones - Taylor - Evans
                Mahrez - Firmino - Ayew - Townsend - Redmond
                Aguero - Lukaku - Rondon

I want to start with an Everton defender. Can only spend 5m.

Go with Jagielka as the safer option or punt on Funes Mori hoping that Stones leaves?

                I prefer Mori a lot.

I agree. If Stones moves, then Funes Mori is a lock in my team.

Evening all, can I round off my weekend with some questions?

                  Coutinho or Firmino and why?
                  Martial or MK and why?

Also, why has Luke Shaw got such a high percentage of ownership?

I really don't get the Shaw love either. So much better for 5.5 I believe.

Or 4.5s that are just as good and give you 1.0 to spend elsewhere

Anyone seriously considering using AOA in GW1 and then WC? Could be the best use of the AOA chip. This strategy effectively allows one to free up 3m from defence and upgrade the 4.5m fifth mid to a 7.5m one. Downside is you are committing to WC in GW2.

I've considered it. I did not even use the AOA chip all last year.
But I won't. I don't like to be locked in to the early WC.

Firminho- more of a goal scorer and may play further forward
                    MK- Martial not completely nailed

Really surprised at all the Lukaku love. Last season this site was filled with anger towards him.

3rd top scorer in the league playing for a team who were poor. He's a decent option, then check their first 7 fixtures

Lukaku is like a night on the lash. You know the aftermath is filled with pain but you still do it.

Is it ridiculous to go for two 6.5 forwards? I know it makes transfers more difficult but I like the midfield it lets me get.

KDB, Hazard, Payet (or Mik, Mahrez), Siggy (Capoue)
                    Aguero, Gray, Carroll
