Up next in our series of membersโ€™ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Tottenham.

We kick start our analysis by assessing the north London outfitโ€™s team statistics in Mauricio Pochettinoโ€™s second season in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just three weeksโ€™ time.

Pochettinoโ€™s side finished third last time around, 11 points behind champions Leicester and one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.

That fails to tell the full story, though, as Spurs were still in with a chance of winning the title right up until their Gameweek 36 trip to Chelsea, where a 2-2 draw at the Bridge, which saw the visitors pick up nine yellow cards, handed the crown to Claudio Ranieriโ€™s men.

Subsequent losses to Southampton and relegated Newcastle โ€“ a 5-1 hammering at St Jamesโ€™ โ€“ meant their season ended in bitter disappointment, with the Gunners climbing above them to clinch the runners-up slot on the final day of 2015/16.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Here's mine FWIW...

    1. Spend as little as possible on keepers - 8.5 - even if they don't get a CS they can get saves
    2. Early on, also, don't spend too much on defenders - CSs are difficult to predict especially early on so look for bargains, fixtures and rotations and be prepared to use a few transfers on them early on
    3. Pick your premium mids / fwds based on quality and early fixtures - 3-4 weeks especially. Form is not relevant yet.
    4. Try to have flexibility in your squad and in your thinking - can you change your players for similar but better options early on? Have you got players at various price points to facilitate this?
    5. Accept that you'll probably wildcard pretty early on - maybe after 4-6 weeks
    6. Don't be afraid to take a couple of hits to correct any mistakes or hop on bandwagons
    7. But don't panic if you have an ordinary start - it's a long season
    8. Aguero - get him, it's easier to lose him than it is to rearrange your whole team to get him afterwards
    9. Don't try to be too clever - 343 works
    10. Go for mainly tried and trusted options with just one or two punts

I actively went against Aguero many times for the armband last season and Kane took him out by the roots time and again.. Don't get me wrong i'm not talking about avoiding him altogether but with 100 mil budget it's too much imo.. i will pick my time when i decide to go that route

      Very good post!
      1. I think it's worth it to spend an additional 0.5 on GKs tho, in order to get two playing options rather than just one (yes I know Jaku is 4.0, but bad fixtures, and bad team)

      6. My best season ever I had like 65 transfers. Don't think about the -4 as for one GW only, ask yourself if the player you're transferring in will outscore your old player by 4 or more points over the next 3-4 GWs instead.

      7. Last year I had my worst start of the season ever, but from my experience GW1-3 or so seem to be a lot about luck, with new/bad FPL-players from my MLs getting enormous amounts of points. Once things have settled, the more experienced players seem to thrive however, and catch up.

      8. Aguero is a must-have from the start imo, with him looking like the best option for captain in GW1.

  5. Does 4-2-4 really exist?

Is 424 some mythical formation? Did peeps make it up by playing FIFA? Can you really have a formation that's 'that' attacking? History seems to answer this with a resoundingly 'yes' vote.

Well, a prime example of a modern take on a 424 system is during Pep's stint at Barcelona. At times he'd use this experimental shape as his backup, like he did so vs Stuttgart in the first knock-out round of the CL in 2010. This is a good visual as to how the classic 442 with a rigid midfield deployed by Christian Gross's Stuttart, contrasts with Pep's more fluid, & adaptable 424 (with Barcelona's ideals heavily implemented of course).

    (courtesy of Michael Cox)
    http://www.zonalmarking.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/barcelona-4-0-stuttgart-tactics-lionel-messi.jpg

    http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/03/19/barcelona-4-2-4-formation-guardiola-messi/barca_average_positions_4-2-4/

The four forwards here are largely all operating on the same horizontal space in the final third. Wingers are pushed up way, way, way further forward unlike a 442 (or diamond 442). Apart from Iniesta's unique role here - playing a little bit deeper than the forward three as he'll be the playmaker & the one bringing the ball in from the left to make those diagonal runs thereby connecting the line with the forwards. This is very much a stark contrast to your traditional 4231 shapes which will have a clearly defined lone-striker up top, a central player behind him 'in the hole' usually & the two narrow wingers who will occupy the space differently in attack as opposed to a winger in the 424. So there's a clear line of three behind the striker pretty much.

No, 424 isn't a myth, & yes it's different to your stereotypical 442. There's various examples in international football of this 'fictitious' formation being utilized effectively. In the most basic sense without going into too much detail, they're both different systems that will utilize the wingers & forwards differently. Allowing for a more dynamic attack.

Another example of a top-team deploying the 424 shape was Brazil in the 1970 world cup (where coincidentally, they won). A more 'by-the-book' 424 if you will, & contrary to Pep's 424 which would play like an asymmetric 433 at times, Brazil's 424 would play as a 4231 when not in possession.

During the Euros, this video was shared on here, showing Conte's system at Juventus as a 3-3-4, which is supposedly super defensive but does hold some similarities.

Trying to work out who I fancy from Liverpool... this is the squad as I see it:

    GK: Mignolet (Stewart)
    RB: Clyne (Flanagan)
    LB: Moreno (Gomez)
    CB: Lovren (Sakho)
    CB: Matip (Klavan)
    DCM: Henderson (Lucas)
    CM: Wijnaldum (Milner)
    ACM: Firmino (Grujic)
    RW: Mane (Ojo)
    LW: Coutinho (Lallana)
    ST: Sturridge (Origi)
    + Ings, Woodburn, 3rd GK
(The formation may augment, but the player roles should be the same)

With Coutino playing wide left, his style should require Moreno to move up the pitch to occupy the space he vacates when drifting inside. That sounds promising.
While Coutino is largely too far from the box, both Mane and Firmino seem equally placed to benefit - although Firmino is more central, Mane seems likelier to get beyond the main striker.
Really tough choice, but perhaps Mane's summer of rest sways me more to him.
Any thoughts to add to this welcomed.

Going by past seasons what do ye reckon

    1. Buy at least 2 Mourinho players, he barely changes his squad and there's no CL distractions. FPL gold.
    2. Avoid getting too many Pep players for the same reason. Nobody attacking at Bayern was safe from rotation, including guys like Muller and Lewandowski.
    3. Trust Pardew players up until Christmas then hold a firesale.
    4. Don't trust Sunderland players until well after Christmas.
    5. Be wary of Hughes/Stoke players. He often neglects to mention key players have picked up niggles in his Friday pressers, then you're dumbfounded when Arnie / Shaqiri etc doesn't appear in the matchday squad.
    6. Trust Pulis/WBA and Swansea against the weaker teams, the ticker usually works well for them.
    7. Apart from the absolute whipping boys, the ticker is rarely useful for Liverpool.
    8. Jump on Everton and Arsenal while they're hot.

I think you're doing well here. It's differential in structure, so as long as you're OK with an earlier than planned WC, then you could do quite well.

Cherry on the top could be downgrading Firmino, and then upgrading one of your GKs to Cech.

I like it. You'll also need to plan a contingency for your forward situation. For instance, if both Grabban+Campbell don't get any playing time, which Mid would you downgrade so that you can chase the next Ighalo, etc.

      1. adstomko
        • 9 Years

Thanks! Yeah I will be playing the WC early. There is no striker (apart from Sergio) who is guaranteed to score 20+, because many teams are beginning to play in a 4-4-2 formation, meaning goals will be shared.
I have chosen Firmino because he plays well against the top teams, and finished the last league season on a high.
As nobody knows the next bargain striker until a few weeks in, I'll be bringing that striker in and dropping a midfielder who is under performing

We can all look at the fixtures and prices and generally good (addicts) Fantasy managers will come up with similar or the same options.

I like it. Personally I think anything goes in GW 1 - whenever I've tried to fit in everyone who at the time was deemed essential, the results weren't great at all. I think I'll go with a casual, Aguero-less team for starters, too. Mkhitaryan over Zlatan for me I think:
      Hart (Mandanda)
      Koscielny, Shaw, Kolarov (Evans, Moreno)
      Mkhitaryan, DeBruyne, Payet, Snodgrass (Fletcher)
      Vardy, Wilson, Rondon

I never said there isn't a middle ground. I like going against the template as much as the next guy, I always go for calculated punts when there's an opportunity to expose certain weaknesses in the top10k template for example.

I've just noticed several people trying odd formations, rotating defensive-mids, etc, with a lack of reason to justify it or make it a viable strategy. Of course there's different ways to skin the FPL cat & playing a rigid 'no hits' sort of playstyle is just detrimental to your versatility as a manager. Yet, there's a certain pool of players that are viable in this game for a reason, go against the grain, sure ok I'm all for it, but at least realize why no one goes for Cattermole.

Speaking of which, I think it's entirely possible, and very plausible, to build your best team around Kun and Zlatan. Most disagree, which gets me a little excited (to your point). Wish you success.

I'm almost certain there is Slaughter, there's a plethora of value options in midfield & a good number of 4.5's to make that route viable. For the early WCers, Wasilewski could be a good one week enabler if you plan/rotate your defense accordingly for the next two or three GW's until you WC.

Going for Agüero & Zlatan is pretty low on the 'going against the grain' scale btw ๐Ÿ˜‰ , it's just not a-la-mode right now in here. Once he gets a game or two before the season starts, I'm sure he'll pick up steam & people will see what hes capable of.

No, those two probably not against the grain at all. Just seems so right now. Thx for the insight on Wasilewski. My D has been somewhat fluid, Stones pending/possible transfer always under front of mind. Triggerlips mentioned a nice rotation between Sunderland and Soto. I agree. Kone is one of my faves, I think he'll have a very productive fantasy season. So many mids with lots of value. First three weeks are gonna be fun.

The season before last Koeman had a good defence because they stopped all crosses, and in that article it specifically says Everton's weakness was letting crosses so that adds to it.

I think deuloeu and Lennon are right wingers and will share gametime. Miralles is more likely to play because he fits the left side so well. So miralles (he's going to be the next bojan isnt he? ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Have not read it yet, but groupthink is definitely a worry frequenting sites such as this.
At least there is healthy disagreement around here, though. And there are enough contrarians to make people question their assumptions.
It is like the media. If you only listen to opinions that reinforce your own, you end up being part of a self-reinforcing echo chamber.

Nicely said. Crowd mentality and psychological safety in numbers is an interesting thing and it's a gratifying feeling to break free of it and be proved right in doing so.

I hope you don't mind me being a grump by saying this but I think your articles would benefit from just one extra proof read, things like spaces before commas, uncapitalised i's, Capitals in the middle of sentences etc. I only say so because I think you write really well on the subject and good writing, persuasive or otherwise, holds itself to its small details.

Nice article, and I agree with most of it.
One thing to consider, though. Following the herd is a risk-mitigation strategy. Going against the herd is not just scary (to our animal brains) but it can be costly for those playing for overall rank.
If things go wrong following the herd, you do not fall behind. If things go wrong going against the herd, you are lost.
Yes, playing a defensive, risk-averse strategy may be boring, but part of the challenge of FPL is to know when to strike out on your own.

Byram can fill in at lb but remains to be seen if he is a long term option there, and Hendrie may still be too raw

Fixtures are not actually that bad, W Ham have a couple of easier fixtures in weeks where most of the usual suspects do not. That would make them useful in a rotation should a 4.5M left back roll into town

Thing with Bojan is he is a very talented footballer but no doubt, far too inconsient. Last season he scored a fair few 10 pointers, so que a few 13-15 pointers this season. Could be a nifty differential when the fixtures turn ripe.

        1. Dr Dream
          • 13 Years

He is for sure. I can't help think that his somewhat diminutive size is working against him.

If you recall when he first arrived at Stoke Hughes took him out for a few weeks to bulk him up a little. That just shows that Hughes is conscious of it perhaps being an issue sometimes. Whether he's right or wrong doesn't matter...but the missing minutes might do.
