Up next in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Tottenham.

We kick start our analysis by assessing the north London outfit’s team statistics in Mauricio Pochettino’s second season in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just three weeks’ time.

Pochettino’s side finished third last time around, 11 points behind champions Leicester and one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.

That fails to tell the full story, though, as Spurs were still in with a chance of winning the title right up until their Gameweek 36 trip to Chelsea, where a 2-2 draw at the Bridge, which saw the visitors pick up nine yellow cards, handed the crown to Claudio Ranieri’s men.

Subsequent losses to Southampton and relegated Newcastle – a 5-1 hammering at St James’ – meant their season ended in bitter disappointment, with the Gunners climbing above them to clinch the runners-up slot on the final day of 2015/16.

    With:
    Everton/Spurs
    Arsenal/Pool
    Chelsea/Hammers
Picking a week 1 points bonanza is going to be a little difficult. Human nature fixates on immediate returns and getting off to a good start is imminent. Preparing a WC Week 2 or 3 hampers this a little less so my question is:
Do you go for Man U, City, heavy week 1 for points and address the team imbalance week 2 by Wildcarding?
Do you ignore the fixtures and keep a decent balance for a later WC?
Interested in those old timer's answers.

Miralles was all over them at the start, he could've scored three in the first 15 minutes. Yeah, this is Koeman's formation at Southampton. i wouldn't go near the everton defence, koeman only kept cleansheets when they had a back 3

My bro who guessed mahrez last year has gone for nolito this year, and there is method to his madness. Also, Chelsea look interesting. With Kante in the middle there is loads of space for the wingers. Bats will do well with two up front as he's a poacher.

Me no. He played every game of euro2016 though. he was bought because he fits into pep's system and Balague says he will be rotated at some point. That's the one problem with him - rotation

The season before last Koeman had a good defence because they stopped all crosses, and in that article it specifically says Everton's weakness was letting crosses so that adds to it.

I think deuloeu and Lennon are right wingers and will share gametime. Miralles is more likely to play because he fits the left side so well. So miralles (he's going to be the next bojan isnt he? 😉 )

This is probably too cheap at the back, but I think the upside of the attacking 7 warrants it. Thoughts?

    Foster
    Friend, Soare, JEvans
    Mahrez, Eriksen, Tadic, Townsend
    Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

    Jaku, Kone, Capoue, Paredes

Happy to wait on United and Chelsea to see how they shape up, and the only attacker I'd ideally want in there is KDB, but that probably means sacrificing one of the front 3, which I'm not keen on. An extra 0.5 to upgrade Paredes would be great, but nothing obvious is standing out - any ideas?

CPL are looking for a new left back I think but they might not get one. You don't like mkhi? Or are you just starting with Mahrez because of the fixture?

I mainly like Mahrez because he's just such a great player. Also fancy LEI to do well away at a depleted HUL in GW1 and there's enough uncertainty over how the points will be shared at MUN (Ibra, Rooney, Martial, Mhki etc) and how quickly Mkhi will adapt to the PL for me to start with him. Could be wrong, but I think Mahrez is the safer pick to start with, and we all know he can be explosive.

Eriksen -> Ayew for the first couple of weeks to save 1m? Could then upgrade Paredes to a 4.5/5 that rotates well with the other 4. Mahrez -> Eriksen then an option in GW4.

Don't know much about ayew. Isn't alli better away from home? I don't thin you need to upgrade paredes. try the burnley defender at 4.0m he may be their first choice cb

Sounds like Ayew has a good chance of starting up front, and his opening 2 fixtures are bur, HUL, so could be a good 2 week gamble. Cheers re the BUR defender tip - what makes you think he's first choice?

      Cedric

Puel relies on very attacking fullbacks with his attackers more narrow for intricate build up play

He also relies on a solid defence and will have 3 mids who are defensively competent in front of a good back four

For Leicester, we may see huth start to fade which means luis Hernandez will have to fit in, who is yet to play in the prem and it also remains to be seen if mendy will be as good as Kante in terms of a defensive shield

Defence is weak but you already knew that. I am not sure about double WBA at the back. I think your midfielders and attackers are great prospects - with some differentials from the template team. I'd be tempted by Alli over Eriksen.

I this one more defender needs to be 5.0 and the 10.5 can be 10 or another 9.5, since you already have 13.0

      also with 2 6.5 forward, downgrade 7.5 and go for a 5.5m 5th mid

So undecided about my 6.5m forward. Austin, Negredo, Rhodes, Gray, Long, , Wickham, Rondon. Who have you guys gone for?

I would say Wilson is nailed for sure. He is their main man particular with Ritchie gone

His partner up top is not nailed and could be King, afobe, Grabban, mousset or potentially none with ibe and gradel on the wings

The main question mark over Wilson is with all his time out how long will it take for him to regain top form, but he has good fixtures on the horizon

Very nice but I would downgrade Bellerin to someone like Huth and then buy someone like Ibra/Kun instead of Kane.

Need an Arsenal defensive player. They usually give good amount of clean sheets.
Would have liked to have Kun. Too costly.
Preferred Kane over Ibra because of pens.

concerned about that midfield, would do bellerin and giroud to a 4.5/ 6.5 and upgrade fletcher

        Kaboul/Ozil/Rondon in
        Bellerin/Fletcher/Giroud out?

        How does that look?
Moyes should inspire more clean sheets?

Anyone else considering Antonio? has some very solid underlying stats and rotates decently with someone like a puncheon.

No at this stage as bilic is intent on his playing rb and he doesn't fit the model of intricate possession football bilic likes in the final third

Last season he only had 1 goal in 7 appearance as rb I believe and he doesn't get many assists

If during the season he starts playing further forward I will put him in for sure, but avoid for now

I think he's gonna be anchored in the back, and unless I see otherwise, I wouldn't bring him in.

Anyone want to rmt. Thanks in advance.

    Foster (Jaku)
    Azpi, Shaw, Friend (Naylor, Lenihan)
    KDB, Mahrez, Ayew, Townsend (Capoue)
    Aguero, Lukaku, Long

Giving the new guys like Mkhi time to settle. I was reading up on him & it took him time to settle at Dortmund so I imagine it will be the same in the epl.

Could probably swap Azpilicueta out for Terry to free a bit more money.

Use it on a fourth defender or a second keeper upgrade

Good team but no Arsenal/Spurs/Hammers players. Tough fixtures for Ayew, Mahrez after the 1st few Gameweeks.

Planning to wc in gw3 so that takes care of Ayew. Mahrez has hull, ARS, SWAN in 1st 3 & Arsenal may still be under strength in gw2. Not keen on any Ars, Spurs or Hammers early on as not keen on their fixtures & players could be rested re Euros. Cheers.
