Up next in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Tottenham.

We kick start our analysis by assessing the north London outfit’s team statistics in Mauricio Pochettino’s second season in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just three weeks’ time.

Pochettino’s side finished third last time around, 11 points behind champions Leicester and one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.

That fails to tell the full story, though, as Spurs were still in with a chance of winning the title right up until their Gameweek 36 trip to Chelsea, where a 2-2 draw at the Bridge, which saw the visitors pick up nine yellow cards, handed the crown to Claudio Ranieri’s men.

Subsequent losses to Southampton and relegated Newcastle – a 5-1 hammering at St James’ – meant their season ended in bitter disappointment, with the Gunners climbing above them to clinch the runners-up slot on the final day of 2015/16.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

The 4.5 GK rotation this year is a little complicated this year.

    - Boruc
    - Heaton
    - Hennessay/Mandanda > who will be no. 1?
    - Jakupovic > no manager!
    - Konstantopoulos/Valdes > who will be no. 1?
    - Mannone/Pickford > who will be no. 1?
    - Foster

    Why are people's thoughts?

Might chance Pickford as a back up 4.0 and cross my fingers.

Was considering this myself Tony. Currently on Jaku but will monitor to see who has the better chances of starting.

Sunderland fans seem to think they'll start with Mannone, but that might change now that Moyes is in charge.

Currently playing Foster every week and either Jaku/Pickford as a 4.0 who may start.

Mandanda/Valdes will be no. 1 IMO.

There's just no chance for Hennessey to start ahead of Mandanda, has been among the World's top keepers for years now, it's impressive how Palace got him.

"Maybe Guardiola’s teams play more beautiful football. But sometimes, to win, you have to play ugly. Mourinho knows that, he perfected that art in England."

How many times has Mou beaten Pep?

Just my preference. Costa is a liability and also close to YC/RC. I rate Bats as a better strike with better movement and more to his game. Just my opinion though. Doubts over if he starts but I think he will.

What do you make of bats chances of playing if Chelsea pull off the Lukaku signing or another striker? Conte seems pretty keen on another one doesn't he, or is that if Costa leaves?

                9 years, 11 months ago

no way, Bats is gonna take time to adjust, Ibra is more experienced and should adjust quicker.

Trying to work out who I fancy from Liverpool... this is the squad as I see it:

    GK: Mignolet (Stewart)
    RB: Clyne (Flanagan)
    LB: Moreno (Gomez)
    CB: Lovren (Sakho)
    CB: Matip (Klavan)
    DCM: Henderson (Lucas)
    CM: Wijnaldum (Milner)
    ACM: Firmino (Grujic)
    RW: Mane (Ojo)
    LW: Coutinho (Lallana)
    ST: Sturridge (Origi)
    + Ings, Woodburn, 3rd GK
(The formation may augment, but the player roles should be the same)

With Coutino playing wide left, his style should require Moreno to move up the pitch to occupy the space he vacates when drifting inside. That sounds promising.
While Coutino is largely too far from the box, both Mane and Firmino seem equally placed to benefit - although Firmino is more central, Mane seems likelier to get beyond the main striker.
Really tough choice, but perhaps Mane's summer of rest sways me more to him.
Any thoughts to add to this welcomed.

you forgot Karius who will be no.1 GK

      Hendo is not a DMC

Lallana usually plays on the right or central. Milner can also play on the right.

Mane cuts in to more central positions.

NO mention of Can who is one of our best players.

Sakho will be ahead of both Matip and Lovren in the pecking order

see my above post, you missed out on a lot of players and have Kevin Stewart, a defender, in as a sub GK.

also Woodburn is way down the pecking order

Just spotted Gomez, is more of a central defender but can cover on the left side

        1. AriseSirGiggsy
          • 15 Years

Yeah I meant to put Stewart in as reserve RB but got wrong slot

Gomez played LB until his injury last season.

          I'd hardly call it misleading.

Well, not much better, but better. I watched Man Utd games against Wigan and Dortmund. Mkhi is crazy, he moves so good, and is always looking for killer ball, i see a lot of assists from Mkhi this season. But, Shaw's movement upfront means that Martial will be closer to goal. It's close call, but i still think Mkhi is better option.

    Mkhitaryan/Firmino/Fabregas/Fisher/Ayew

    Lukaku/Austin/Ibrahimovic

I'm good to go. I can't get rid of Fisher. Southampton(Austin) will play away in gameweeks 2 and 4 against Arsenal and Man Utd, so i will need Fisher for five-men midfield in that gameweeks as he is playing against Sunderland and CP.

gray would be lucky to get 10 goals. it was between tadic and long whether i would go 352 or 343 and based on tactical projections, plus his set piece duties, tadic swayed it over to a 352 at long's expense.

Quite likeable. I'm not really convinced by the likes of Tadic, Cap, Zaha and Walker is a little excessive when you already have Shaw to rot around.

I'd downgrade Walker to Pieters/Wolls and try to improve Zaha.

Question for those going different than the standard 3-4-3 formation.

Why pay 6.5 for a 3rd striker and go 3-5-2 when you can just pick up one of the many 4.5 defender options and a 4.5 mid and go 4-4-2 with an extra big hitter in the front 6.
It's what I'm doing anyway. With a gw4 WC very much in mind.

Austin is a better finisher than Long. He has a lot better scoring record in PL. He should be ahead of long IMO ifnthey are playing 1 up top but they mat play 2 up top. I prefer Austin but will need to monitor.

    1. Pariße

GW1 is misleading, in fact the first 4 gameweeks can be misleading. That's why I don't fany early wildcards, it's also a waste, you just had a wildcard before GW1, gather information (this page is very good at that) and plan longterm.
