Up next in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Tottenham.

We kick start our analysis by assessing the north London outfit’s team statistics in Mauricio Pochettino’s second season in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just three weeks’ time.

Pochettino’s side finished third last time around, 11 points behind champions Leicester and one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.

That fails to tell the full story, though, as Spurs were still in with a chance of winning the title right up until their Gameweek 36 trip to Chelsea, where a 2-2 draw at the Bridge, which saw the visitors pick up nine yellow cards, handed the crown to Claudio Ranieri’s men.

Subsequent losses to Southampton and relegated Newcastle – a 5-1 hammering at St James’ – meant their season ended in bitter disappointment, with the Gunners climbing above them to clinch the runners-up slot on the final day of 2015/16.

I am almost settled on this. Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I am quite settled on 3-5-2.

    Foster Jaku

    Hazard Mkhi Shaqiri Ayew Mahrez

Defence a little weak. How about downgrading Shaqiri to Gradel and one of the defenders to a 4.0. Then you have 1.5 left to upgrade your defence

I agree def is awful. I like a bit more data before I pick though as cleanies can be a lottery. As long as they play in OK defences I don't mind too much.

Fair enough. Even if you keep Shaqiri I'd downgrade one defender andnupgrade one to a 5.0

Dont think so but you dont really need 5 playing defenders. Get a 5.0 that you feel comortable playing every week and rotate 3 others for the remaining 2 spots

I can see a bit of a change this season. Rather than the typical 3-4-3/3-5-2 approach, many defences will be strengthened because of new managers.
I may go for a 4-5-1 formation, as nobody knows which striker will be prolific. Aguero is likely to be the man, but most teams will play in a 4-4-2/4-2-4 except Man City, Swansea, Liverpool. So, my team (just a draft) will be a 4-5-1, as many of the midfielders below can play as a striker:

    Mandanda - Jakupovic
Stones - Terry - Morgan - Friend (Kone)
    Hazard - Mahrez - Mkhitaryan - Firmino - Ayew
    Aguero (Grabban - Campbell)

Nice idea and something I've thought about myself.

For 5.5 you can get top of the range defenders, for 7.5 you can get very strong midfielders, the strikers seem very expensive to have two or three of them.

      1. adstomko
        • 9 Years

Exactly, and the majority of those expensive strikers are likely to play in a 4-4-2

It's not so much that, it's the opening weekend they all have, only Aguero and Vardy jump out fixture wise.

Just don't think I'd captain him over Aguero in the first 3 so would rather spead the money about.

If he flops in the first two weeks he will probably drop in value as a lot own him, Bournmouth and Southampton both beat them last season so it won't be easy.

Anyone using their AOA in GW1 to get it out of the way while you can build a squad for it?

Unlike last season you may well need a 5th midfield enabler so might not get the chance to use it properly later on in the season.

GW1 seems like the perfect time due to many key men potentially missing and the big hitters with difficult fixtures (thinking Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool)

    Something like...

    GW1 AOA
    GW2/3 WC for Euro stars.

He could be worth a punt. A good creative player, who has goals in his game. I'm personally avoiding because of his proclivity for cautions, and I think the wings are where Pep will rotate most.

A for me. Think hazard is going to be essential this year.

Possibly, he has a decent record, although so does Tadic.

I'd guess at yes, given strikers' habit of wanting them.

Could again have a season like he had at QPR if given gametime from the start.

Could do, but I'd be worried about injuries and Long. I personally wouldn't risk starting with him, but he could be gold.

            RMT

            Hart (Jakupovic)
            Toby Shaw Bertrand (PVA, Friend)
            Mkhitaryan Ayew Mirallas Redmond (Fer)
            Aguero Costa Gray

Hart won't pick up many bonus points (will go to attackers instead), won't pick up many save points (he's not that good, plus City don't concede that many shots), though he could get a lot of clean sheets and weeks where he gets 6 points. Personally, to cover the City defence, i'd get someone who offers attacking potential as well. Sagna?

Sagna will be rotated on UCL weeks. Hart is more nailed. Cheers

Curious as to why you've chosen Hart over other keepers such as Cech and De Gea who are in my opinion clearly better players, available at the same price?

City have easier fixtures in the first games (WC in GW9). I am confident Pep for Clean Sheets

It's a punt. Everton can go better in PL with Koeman than the Palace (Townsend)
