The penultimate team in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are West Brom.

We get our analysis underway by assessing the Baggies team statistics and compare them to the rest of the Premier League and their previous league campaign. We then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just over two weeks’ time.

The Baggies finished in fourteenth position last time out – just six points clear of the drop zone – after a dire run of form saw them draw four and lose five of their final nine league fixtures.

Pulis’ side struggled for a cutting edge and managed to find the net on just 34 occasions – down on their 38 goals from 2014/15 and a tally superior only to basement-dwellers Villa.

Does anyone know anything about Fabregas? How do you think Conte will use him? More of an anchor or higher up the field? His prize is pretty tempting if he can repeat his form from the first season after coming back from Spain...

Just thinking about Leicester's run last year and how maverick Andy made had such a good start because he backed the team he supported.

Maybe that's an underrated asset when picking players for your FPL team. Compared to most people you're likely to see more of the team you support, hear more about background and off pitch factors and have a better idea of who will/won't/might feature and perform when they do.

Maybe that's something we should be more cognisant of? That we have an advantage over others when it comes to assessing the players from the teams we support, even compared to posters on a well informed site like this.

Goes both ways, if your team starts bad, you have more invested than others. Leicester was a big differential early on in attack last season.

Depends on how well you assess your team though? For example, as a United fan I avoided all United players like the plague last year bar Smalling around DGW time. I might argue that I had a better idea than most of how poor they could be before the season even kicked off, in which case I was still taking advantage of that extra knowledge.

I also avoided Depay as I saw an interview with one of the backroom team where they said he could struggle in his first season and that they were backing him to perform more in his second year. That saved me from falling into that particular trap.

it's like double emotional points, positive or negative.
i don't like when, inevitably, fantasy thoughts creep into my head during my team's match.
that said, i almost always carry 3 players from my team.

    Cech / Jakupovic

    Kos / 5.0 / Friend / Souare / Fernandez

    Mahrez / Mkhi / Ayew / Townsend / 4.5

    Aguero / Kane / Grabban

Also who would you pick as a 5.0 def and a 4.5 mid?

Would you do any changes to this team ?

    Foster, Jakupovic
    Shaw, Evans, Pieters, Souare, Friend
    Hazard, Alli, Tadic, Townsend, Capoue
    Aguero, Ibra, Wilson

    Total cost £100

This is a good team. I'd maybe find an alternative to Souare and there may not be too many clean sheets in that backline, but offensively strong. Personally, I'll be going for Ayew or Siggy in your Tadic slot, but close call. Also, once a strong 5.5M mid emerges, I'd consider downgrading Townsend and upgrading a defender or fifth midfielder e.g. Townsend to Gradel/ Fengouhli and Souare to Walker/Baines/Fuchs etc.

      1. SwissGuinness
        • 12 Years

Great feedback, thanks a lot !

I was actually struggling between Tadic and Siggy... As you say, close call. I absolutely agree on upgrading a defender or 5th midfielder once we know a bit more about the mid-price options!

What's your team like for the moment ?

No worries. I basically have two possible teams, one with and one without Ibrahimovic. The one with him is very similar to yours, except I've got Ayew instead of Tadic (though tempted by Fabregas) and Mahrez instead of Hazard, spending the extra 0.5M on Heaton so I have two definite starters between the sticks.

The version without is a bit more fun - Baines, Walker & Shaw at the back, for example. Mkhi & Mahrez in midfield with Lukaku up front with Aguero and Wilson.

Will be monitoring Hazard and Ibrahimovic very carefully over the next couple of weeks - if either explodes, they'll be instant "must haves".

          1. SwissGuinness
            • 12 Years

If Jakupovic is a sure starter, I think you should go with him and Hazard. Jakupovic rotates perfectly with Foster and I'm confident Hazard will be worth the extra 0.5 on Mahrez in the first five games.

I love your version without Ibra. It sounds really really great. I'm not sure Ibra will be a must have, honestly... But it will be easier to transfer him out after a few bad games than squeeze him in a team built expensive midfielders and defenders.

Who are your defenders for your "Ibra team" ?

    A) Azpilicueta & Lenihan

    or

    B) Walker & Evans

    Unsure whether; a premium defender + a cheapie or a semi-premium defender & a cheap,decent defender
