Our series of articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, comes to its conclusion with a look at West Ham.

First up, we cast an eye over the Hammers’ team statistics in Slaven Bilic’s first campaign in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League and the previous season. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources ahead of the season kick-off in just over two weeks’ time.

After finishing in twelfth place in 2014/15, the club parted company with Sam Allardyce and installed Bilic at the helm as they looked to cultivate a more attack-minded style of play in their final season at Upton Park.

It’s fair to say that the Croatian made an instant impact – away wins over Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City in the opening six Gameweeks set the trend for what was to follow, as the Hammers finished in seventh spot on 62 points, just four points behind fourth-placed Man City and 15 more than they managed in Big Sam’s final year.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

How nailed on is KDB to start? Seeing posts saying that he isn't back training or anything yet.

    2. Haz + Vardy

Can anyone get a better total than 325.95 for the opening 6 game weeks?

I think with some more time and mathematics I couls

Readjusting for just 3GWs would put it on 167.98.

Would have to change team based on gw1-3 value to do the same method.

        I'm guessing you're planning a WC?

Using a simple Solver setup in excel it seems like the maximum achievable score for gw 1-3 is 167.99 with the following squad:

      De Bruyne
      Payet
      Giroud
      Sigurdsson
      Alderweireld
      Lloris
      Wickham
      Coutinho
      Shaw
      Mane
      Foster
      Costa
      Monreal
      Fuchs
      Evans

      I probably wouldn't go with that 🙂

I like Sergio & Gray up front. My biggest problem is that 'middle striker'. Once I figure that out the rest of the team will fall in to place around what I have so far (the popular picks like Shaw etc.)

I'm currently on Costa but I'm not convinced. I'm really not sure about Lukaku. Vardy looks over priced, Kane and Ibra will affect my midfield too much and the other 6.5's leave it looking a bit short...

Any advice will be much appreciated

I'd start with Vardy. They play Hull to begin with. First choice and on pens. First couple of weeks will provide insight into how teams shape up. Vardy has scored throughout so not sure why last seasons top scorer is overpriced

I'm going to have a punt at the Arsenal line up vs Liverpool.

    ---------------------Cech-----------------------
    Bellerin - Chambers - Gabriel - Monreal
    -------Xhaka----------------Coquelin--------

Not surprising that as an Arsenal fan, I haven't got a single Gunner in my team currently.

I don't really have a team just yet, just searching out various solutions.

I do like this one but I'd like one 9.5m mid, I think. So downgrading Zlatan/Kane to a 9.0m fwd would still keep that great frontline but help make the mid a tad more flexible 🙂

A very strong forward line, and strong team. My only concern is the difficulty in buying a higher priced midfielder after the season begins if a pricey mid starts off really strong, and becomes a must-have. I guess you'd make a double swap.

Hmm after checking through Andy's rotation hot topic I've been looking at other options outside of Foster/Heaton in goal.

To my astonishment Cech was the highest scoring sub 6.0m defender last season! For all Toby A's, Bellerin's and Koscielny's attacking threat, clean sheet Cech has nearly done them all. If Ospina hadn't of pinched 20 points he would have been the highest scoring keeper/defender overall!

I might ditch that keeper rotation and go Cech/4.0..? Saves theinevitable hassle of picking Gabriel too.

Should we all just be going fire-and-forget with Cech?

If you really want to use last years performance as a guide, you could arguably save 0.5 and get Gomes from Watford instead of Cech. Gomes essentially had the same total (157 vs. 159)

after several seasons of frustrating rotations I'm going down the line of a premium keeper and just forget about it. with the premium keepers being cheaper I cant see how the rotation option is preferable this season. I'm between cech and courtois and then just leave them there and you can easily change to any of the other keepers if they start performing.

'pts per minute' is a dodgy form of measurement.

Say a player came on for 1 minute, he'd have 90 PpG because of the 1pt for playing. It's disproportionate.

PpP accounts for rotation, and bench proneness.

PPG doesn't account for matches where Rooney was dropped and he didn't come on in the second half.

            • 14 Years

We don't have a perfect solution but PpG is far more accurate than PpM imo.

It's just a little surprising stat that's all, considering the hate for Rooney, and all the talk of him playing DM last year.

        3. Camp No No
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

PpG is more important than PpM important in FPL because that is what we get: points from single games.

However, your argument only really is valid concerning players who actually have mostly played small minutes. When minutes are up at 2400 by season, we know this is not a case of 1 pointers from low minutes.

It is true though that Giroud featured in each and every match over the season, but seldom played a full match, so as you said the ppg correctly tells he was more prone to rotation (12 times featuring as a sub). Yet, it is easy to see that twice as many goals in just 10 more appearances is the real reason of him scoring more points: of the 38 points he scored more than Rooney, 36 came from goals alone.

    Hi, lads.
I would really appreciate your take on my current team, which is pretty much done. The final version of will be really similar to that one. 90% of the times I will be playing 3-4-3.

    GKs
Heat + Foster. They rotate pretty nicely and are cheap. I hate investing heavily in goalkeepers due to the limited points potential.

    Defenders
Stones – I expect him to sign for City. If not, he is still a viable option as he is one of the best defenders in the league. Also at 5.0m he is priced nicely.
Shaw – Sure starter at a reasonable price with potential for assist and even goals. I expected United to be CS machines under Mou.
Evans – Nice fixtures and sure starter at 4.5m. It is absolute fail not to own him.
The rest of the defenders will be two 4.0 defenders. As of now I am going with Amat and Paredes.

    Midfields
Mkhitaryan – Goals and assists machine. He will be the creative force for United. In my opinion he will also be highest scoring midfielder during the next season.
Kevin De Bruyne – The main man for City imo. If he manages to stay fit, he may be able to eclipse Mkhitaryan in terms of points.
Fàbregas - I am fully expecting to have a huge season. He will be involved in everything creative for Chelsea and will also take a lot of set-pieces. At 7.5m I recon he is really good bargain.
Eriksen – The main midfielder for Spurs. His price per points ratio is really good at 8.5m.
Barry – My 5th midfielder. He is sure starter and at 4.5m he is pretty wise option.

    Strikers
Ibrahimovic – First captain choice every week. In my opinion he will be the EPL scorer next season. Expensive but a sure captain material.
Costa – Captain material. I expect at least 20 goals from him next season.
Berahino – Good option at that price. If he signs a new contract his mind will be at the right place.

I expect this year the title to be decided between City, United and Chelsea, hence the lack of players of Arsenal and Liverpool.

Any thoughts on my team will be greatly appreciated.

Don't like that you have two 4.0s. I don't see Koeman immediately sorting out Everton's defensive issues. Little room for injuries/benching or the occasional sending off. Going without Kun is risky. Don't trust Pulis' attack, and even then, I think Rondon may offer better value. I like your mids.

I am not happy about the two 4.0 defendes too but my strategy has always been to invest in midfield and attack.

I am getting Stones mainly because I expect him to sign for City. Having a sure starter for 5.0m for a title contender team is too good to ignore.

Rondon is another good option I am currently toying with.

Don't like Barry as 5th mid. But nice rest of your midfield.

Lack of Aguero would worry me. Also I don't think Berahino's head can ever be in the right place while he remains at West Brom.

Also don't like the two 4m defenders, as they will be unlikely to play proper minutes which is the very least you want from at least 4 of your defenders (or from all players if I'm honest).

Like your other 3 defenders. Also keep an eye on Costa. I remain to be convinced by him for this season.

Any love for Carroll? Hadn't considered him really but didn't even realise he'd scored 9 goals (and was on the pitch about 13 games less than Payet), that seems pretty decent! Rondon for example, got about that many in 34 games in comparison. Worth a flutter?

If West Ham don't sign a striker, yes! Could bag 20 goals this season if he stays fit with that midfield behind him

Will have to keep an eye out and see if they sign anyone! One to watch for now maybe

If West Ham fail to sign a striker then looks a great punt.. likely that they will though

    Why no Payet's on RMTs?

Is he really going to miss Chelsea? West Ham's key player

He's probably missing the beginning of the season due to holiday.

He's going straight into my team on my GW4 wildcard. Fixtures turn good then and he'll hopefully be back to full fitness.

Solid team all around. Don't think Olsson is nailed though, I'd choose between Evans or McAuley. No Aguero is worrying.

        £1m ITB too.

I'll bottle and pick Aguero eventually.
