Having already drafted in talented young players such as Jordon Ibe, Lewis Cook and Lys Mousset in this transfer window, Bournemouth signed left-back Brad Smith from Liverpool on Wednesday. The 22-year-old arrives at Dean Court for a reported fee worth up to £6 million including add-ons.

After penning a four-year contract with the Cherries, the Australian international is determined to earn more pitch time after struggling to convince at Anfield:

“It all happened quite quickly. I knew there was a bit of interest and then they put the bid in, Liverpool accepted and it went from there. I flew to America (with Liverpool) and was there for about five days. Once I found out the bid had been accepted, I stopped training with the team to make sure everything went the right way. It’s a great stadium here and it’s a great opportunity for me to come and play in front of the fans. Hopefully I’ll do well, learn a lot and progress in my career”.

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Smith’s big break came when he was scouted as a teenager by Liverpool. He moved over to England at the age of 14, and progressed through the academy to make his first-team debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 2013.

That would be Smith’s only appearance of the 2013/14 season, though, and he would spend the opening months of the following campaign on loan at Swindon Town, where he played 10 matches in all competitions, registering one assist.

In September last year, Smith signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, but while he managed 10 first-team appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists, three of his four Premier League outings came when manager Jurgen Klopp rested many of his regular starters around the Europa League campaign.

Due to Smith’s parents being English, the defender was eligible to play for both England and Australia at international level. He featured for England at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, playing 16 times in total, before deciding to represent Australia. He made his senior debut for the Socceroos in September 2014 against Saudi Arabia, and currently has nine caps to his name. He has also played eight matches at Under 23 level for Australia, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

Costing a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Smith’s acquisition will obviously put us on alert to the prospect of a cut-price route into Bournemouth’s back-four.

The new boy was handed his first start against Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, less than 24-hours after Charlie Daniels was the preferred left-back against Reading.

It’s fair to say that Smith faces a tough task to nail down a starting berth for the beginning of the season. Given that Daniels racked up an impressive three goals and five assists last term, and ranked fifth among defenders for key passes, it seems like the left-back berth is his to lose at present.

So far, Daniels is currently owned by 5.9% of FPL managers, more than double any other Cherries defender.

There’s no doubt that Daniels’ price rise to 5.0 is off-putting, though, bearing in mind that Bournemouth conceded 67 times last term and served up just seven clean sheets.

Similarly, Steve Cook’s valuation has also climbed out of the budget bracket on the back of four goals and two assists last season – having carried a strong set-piece threat last season, finishing joint-fifth among defenders for shots in the box with 21, helping him claim four goals and two assists.

At 4.5, then, Simon Francis currently makes the most persuasive case for consideration as the Cherries prepare to face Palace, West Brom, Watford and Hull in the opening eight Gameweeks.

The new skipper produced just one key pass less than Daniels last season despite featuring at centre-half on numerous occasions and with Adam Smith only just returning from injury to earn 45 minutes against Cardiff on Saturday, the versatile Francis could start the season at right-back.

It’s worth noting, though, that Francis is looking to become a regular in central defence this term, which suggests that Adam Smith – also costing 4.5 – could also be one to monitor if he claims the right-back slot once his fitness is up to scratch.

Despite last season’s defensive record, it’s somewhat surprising to see that the Cherries were the fifth most resilient team in terms of minutes per shot conceded in 2015/16, while they ranked seventh for shots conceded inside the box.

Ultimately, there’s too much uncertainty over Brad Smith’s minutes to take unnecessary risks, in spite of such a budget-friendly price tag. His arrival now offers Howe two viable options at left-back, which, in turn, lessens the likelihood of Nathan Ake featuring there. The on-loan Chelsea man was utilised in this position whilst at Watford last year and is now determined to nail down a central midfield role for the Cherries. At 4.5 and listed as a defender, his situation is also clearly worth monitoring – Ake made his debut as a centre-half on Friday evening against Reading.

I'm always wary of paying top dollar for a player who was considered underpriced the previous year. Half the trick is knowing which player and his supporting cast are the real deal, and which may struggle in their second season. FPL Towers know that Aguero, Kane and Mahrez will be heavily sought after and so are priced accordingly. The key may well be to recognise and avoid the players and teams you consider to have over-performed, while finding the lower priced gems in underperforming teams on the up (new manager, summer signings, etc.).

If we take last season's pool of players that are still in the PL and look at their starting price, there's always a budget or mid-priced option that scores well. Last year, Alli and Mahrez made their 5m starting prices look ridiculous.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yStmjLuN-hpvHJdidwogZjt8jAQHBEnd8J8JIeHBfLk/pubchart?oid=784364096&format=image

The advice given by several stalwarts of FFS (and the HoF), is to pick an initial squad at prices that allows you flexibility. If you take a look at the link below, it gives the number of players at each price point and the average amount of points each price points returned. While the aforementioned Alli and Mahrez scored excellently, the mountain of other midfielders at 5m brought the average down.

Still, a reasonable tactic would be to ensure you have a number of price points covered in your squad. Taking this literally, based on the spread of players at each price, a 100m balanced squad would look like:

    5.0 - 4.5
    6.0 - 5.0 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5
    11.0 - 9.0 - 6.5 - 5.5 - 5.0
    13.0 - 9.0 - 6.5

This is considered defensive heavy and midfield light for most FPL managers as the majority of points are scored by premium midfielders, however this balance gives the most flexibility in switching from your pick to a rising star without the need to take point hits. You can see the actual numbers in the link below.

I tried to make the latter few points in a rambling post a page or two back, but this is much more digestible. Anyone planning an early wildcard should still take note when they are drafting their WC team. If you don't allow for this flexibility early on, you will pay for it in hits and could fall behind people who use WC later.

I just saw that 🙂 2 pages had passed me by in the time it took to write so didn't realise you'd posted along the same lines!

As for mid-priced options, I'm loving Mirallas, Deulofeu, Fischer, Gradel - so much so that I'm struggling to go any higher. The flip side of that means you can go top heavy with Aguero, Ibra and Batshuayi, for example. So difficult to pick premium defenders this year, until we know more under their new managers.

Yeah, i'm fine with breaking this mould early on, but then I plan to wildcard after GW3. After that point I will hopefully know enough about premium defenders and lower price midfielders to pick a team with the structure outlined above, or close to it.

That's an interesting one to be fair - this season there are 3 new managers at the (arguably) 3 top clubs, so it's going to take longer I think to determine which premium defenders are worthy of our investment. In seasons past, you could rely on Ivanovic under Mourinho for example, but there's a lot of flux at the start of this one.

I'm seeing value in the likes of Walker, Coleman, Baines, Shaw, who should comfortably outscore 5.5m midfielders and strikers.

A lot of the RMTs on here seem to miss that 5.5 defenders can easily outscore 5.5 mids this season. A lot of people are too set on having 343 or 352 to see that they may be better off with 4 at the back this season, and not a 5.5 mid playing every week.

True on the 5.5m mids, but if you play the fixtures with cheaper defenders and hit on a strong rotation, their average PPG can get you pretty close to the production of a premium defender you play every week.

All depends on hitting the right ones, but can't quite compare a defender to a midfielder because of the sunk cost of having to own five Defs while only needed to play three.

That linked table at the bottom is sensationally helpful. Extremely generous of your time and effort, cheers for this.

I do think your disclaimer about the premium mids being the highest points scorers is well taken, and something to consider as far as price points are concerned -- this year for example, the 9.5m mids seem to be quite a bit stronger than the 9.0s, while the 7.5m mids are abundant, as the table shows, and also allow you to downshift to whichever 6.5m explodes.

Regardless, really like the concept and the thinking behind it. Great post.

Thanks! I was tinkering with my squad and saw that there were lots of value in the 6.5m midfield and striker buckets, so got the idea to see just how much.

FPL have got the pricing this year spot on. In previous years when a player has been doing well and risen in price, it hasn't seemed that there are genuine alternatives. Carp Bowstring (sp?) listed around 8 midfielders under 7m earlier today that he wanted to try and squeeze in. Should make for much more dynamism in squads and RMT's.

I'm interested to see how other people would change the price structure here from one based purely on the data. On first glance I would do something like this:

      4.5 - 4.5 (rotating pair)
      6.0 - 5.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5
      10.0 - 9.5 - 7.5 - 6.5 - 4.5
      13.0 - 9.0 - 6.5

Playing in 343 with a rotating 4.5 GK pair based on fixtures, 4.5 rotating trio in defence on the same basis. I'm looking at Hazard for that 10 slot, Aguero for the 13 and lots of flexibility in the midfield picks, particularity the 9.5 slot.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 16 Years

Yes, exactly. It immediately doesn't feel right to have a 4.5m and 5m GK's when maximising a 100m budget. That's purely a result of the price spread for GKs based on the data, as you say. It means we can shave 0.5m here and there and allocate to where we want to prioritise.

I think this is brilliant. Thank buddy. If I could expand on this in a way.

We have to spend a bare minimum of 4.0 on every position. So the true expense at this stage is actually the excess on top of that.

Say we compare the average cost per points for the 7.0mil & 9.5mil Midfielders.

      7.0mil - 4 Players - Avg 90 points
The actual cost is 3.0million. If we break it down to the lowest denominator of 0.5mil then each 0.5mil is worth on average 15 points.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Isn't this twisted slightly by there being no regular starters at 4m (at least as yet)? I think we're looking at 4.5m for defenders and mids, and unless Diomande starts, it could be 5 or 5.5m as the minimum for a striker.

        1. Lebowski85
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

Yeah I agree.the average for the players in the budget price bracket suffers from those that don't play. I do agree the numbers aren't telling the whole truth, but it's an interesting idea no?

      2. Lebowski85
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

        Sorry.....I posted too early.

If we compare the 9.5mil Midfielders.
        9.5mil - 4 Players - Avg 188 points
The actual cost is 5.5million. If we break it down to the lowest denominator of 0.5mil then each 0.5mil is worth on average 17 points.

So....the 9.5 price bracket is technically worth more than the 7.0 on a points/price average, but at what expense for the rest of your team?

        1. Twisted Saltergater
          • 16 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

I see what you're saying - but that's retrospect. At the start of the season, those 4 players were not 9.5m. They're 9.5m this season as a result of their performance last season. Does that make sense? If we took a look at the players that started at 9.5m, they collectively would've earnt less than 17 points per 0.5m spend.

We need flexibility in our starting squads so that we can switch to the standout player(s) without taking points hits and/or leaving large amounts of money in the bank. It's very tough to look at a KdB, or Fermino, or Eriksen and downgrade to a 5m Mahrez, but if you had a 5m Routledge in there, you'd do it in a heartbeat.

That's a good point about the retrospect.

I actually agree with your main article, so I wasnt trying to disprove it or anything. Flexibility above all else is key in the beginning. Seeing as you collected that data though it just occurred to me to see how the points worked in relation to the value. Think I'll need to have a think and refine the logic a bit. Nice article though mate

You give the number of players in each position at each price point, and the average score for each position at each price point.

But I am more interested in the highest scoring players at each price point for each position, and then comparing various sets of players at different price points using VORP. This probably results in a slightly different price structure for an ideal squad. For example, 4.5-4.5 or 4.5-4.0 is almost certainly superior to 5.0-4.5 for the goalkeeper combination. I want the best player combination I can afford, not a set of average players chosen from the price points with the greatest numbers of players. And provided I start with a fairly sensible price structure, it is usually not too difficult to change it using 2 free transfers.

... I agree that 13.0 - 9.0 - 6.5 is an excellent structure for the forward line, but I think there are many other good alternatives for the midfield and defence.

      2. Twisted Saltergater
        • 16 Years

Surely VORP only works retrospectively or until a pattern has emerged, no? There is no guarantee of points - just take Hazard from last year.

What this post is aiming to highlight is that having a spread of prices based on the actual % of players in each bracket, means you can jump off one player to another without storing up 2 FT's. Nothing more, nothing less.

VORP certainly works better after a few game-weeks have been played and patterns are starting to emerge.

But it could also be used with figures taken from the RMT tool, making allowances for any that don't look right.

One interesting point from your second spreadsheet is that defenders scored slightly more last season than midfielders who are at the same price this season, especially in the price range 5.0 to 6.5. But perhaps some midfielders have greater potential for dramatic improvement than do defenders.

I like your work, but when I tried to put it in a few instances, I found myself in a few problems.

Let's say I went exactly with this team budget distribution and had Aguero, Lukaku and Austin as my strikers. In GW1 against Bournemouth, Ibra and Aguero scored double digits points and masses are all transferring them in. I already have Aguero, but how do I get Ibra? My funds are tied up in a lot of players and I'd have to make an extra 1-2 transfers apart from the Ibra move with this team style.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Cheers AK. I'm not saying you should go with exact distribution of funds, but it does give the most flexibility for the way FPL Towers have priced the players this year. Should you be happy sticking with a 4.5m GK week in, week out for instance, then you're 2nd keeper could be a non-playing 4m or 4.5m, and you can distribute the extra 0.5m where you wish to prioritise.

Similarly, the defence is quite heavy. If you don't think you'll jump on a Koscielny if he score and gets a CS in the first couple of GW's, then you could save 0.5 - 1m there and invest elsewhere.

Responding directly to the example you gave, if Aguero and Ibra get off to a fast start, then we might see pressure on Hazard or KdB's as people switch funds to the strikers. On the other hand, they may start slow and the likes of Negredo, Wilson, Long, Gray and Austin start on fire - hence the need for balance.

No worries! There are no wrong and right answers to setting up a team for the season (ok, there are some wrongs!). I'd actually like to see results go according to fixture more, rather than form, which means we'll see more transfer rotation rather than sitting on the likes of Alli and Mahrez for the season.

^This, Exactly this! I am wondering of the same issue. See if you have both Aguero and Ibra in your team while the midfield's budget distribution is the same, you are not losing much if a 5.5m defender starts scoring points, as you can hope to cover those points from 4.5m defenders. But if a striker like Ibra becomes a heavy scorer, it might be less likely to cover that gap from the 9m striker.

        1. Twisted Saltergater
          • 16 Years

That is true - we see attackers as a more valuable source of points. I think that view is changing though. So long as our squads have a reliable couple of captain choices, then a defender at 5.5m can easily match a midfielder or striker - the numbers show that. There was a point last season where Fuchs was scoring what seemed like 9 PPG.

We have to compromise somewhere - if you go big with Aguero and Ibrahimovic then you compromise elsewhere. In my case, I'm seeing value in the 6.5m midfielders and choosing an extra one of these over a 9m midfielder. That decision means I'm covered up front but have less flexibility in midfield and defence.

This is wonderful and I agree. I've always done it like this but the absolute dearth of mid price striker options has led me to create an aguero plus two 6.5 this season.

I know this is madness. It let me down last year and it will let me down again. Needing multiple hits to fix the balance.

But it's either that or pick Rooney and Ayew over long and Mkhitaryan...

Good insight. And I do love premium priced defenders... but the reason we could afford them last season is that we saw several key budget mids.

The point is - it's hard to be punty and go for the fischers and feghoulies from the start of the season. We just have to wait and see.

Otherwise this math-y balance concept could be just a trap to punt ourselves into a corner.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q0xdI9z_lhyQXOXm-7aviARcfRmyEcKMLCx0k36vsGs/edit?usp=sharing

I've put another column in with minutes per goal or assist. Obviously the data will favour those that came on and scored late on in a game, but it's there to play around with anyway.

I'll fill in the data as the rest of the games go on, i.e. update minutes, goals, assists, etc. so the minutes per goal/assist column can stay up to date.

For anyone wanting to see the breakdown of goals and assists, I have a document with each preseason game and any match reports that I managed to draft up while watching the game(s).

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/10IGtUCCSAZxYI21AzU8JsMJF2GJrTPY7okrMgOKeZ-U/edit?usp=sharing

This will also be updated as the games go on.

        That is correct 😆

Gray has 8, and Barrow has some form recently for Swansea; 6 assists already. Such a shame he's classified as a striker

You need to think long and hard about him. Swansea have a history of wide men and mids playing further up the ptch than the striker on avg. Siggy, Rutledge, Ayew, Michu (and others) have done it for a few seasons.

Routledge is the only one who has under scored FPL wise.

        Due.

In terms on playing around with it from a user perspective it could be sorted by column j (mins per goal / assist) from smallest to largest and if you applied filters across your top field you could manually remove players who had only played a small amount of minutes that are skewing the stats a bit.

Not sure if you have much experience with excel /ssheets but they are handy enough anything I have done I've learnt in work or self taught through Google.

      Good work, fair play.

Hazard is obviously a great FPL prospect but wouldn't people rather wait and see where he fits in Conte's system.

Presumably he'll be competing with Michy, Costa and possibly Lukaku for a striker spot as I get the impression Conte prefers more defensive wingers in Moses, Cuardrado, Willian etc.

Personally I'm going with Mahrez for GW1 against Hull and saving the 0.5 just in case Hazard explodes against WHU.

Hey guys. Toying witha 433. Really want all 4 big hitters to start with. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

      DDG (Robinson)
      Wolly / Cedric / Williams / McCauly (4.0 fodder)
      Hazard / KDB / Townsend (Capoue,Fletcher)
      Kun (c) / Ibra (vc) / Austin

      0.5itb

Planned WC in GW4 but no doubt in GW2 when it all goes horribly wrong. 🙂

Am I the only one here who has no plans to WC early?

I'll do it if I pick my initial team horribly wrong. But, I feel with a few hits early on, WC could be avoided for better use later wen you really need it.

Don't get this 'have' to WC after gw 3 or 4 theory.

I am not planning to WC early. Not something I do. I use it when I need to use it.

You're not the only one. I don't see the point of pre-determining when to WC. Totally depends on the situation

Not sure why this hasn't had any replies. I like it a lot.

Have toyed with something very similar for a 352. I'd probably go with Deulofeu or Mirallas instead of Bolasie, but that's just a personal taste thing.

So, Deolufeu. At one point last season he became a red hot bandwagon - absolutely electric talent and developed an understanding with Lukaku that delivered a streak of assists. Bandwagon quickly derailed when it became clear that he simply wasn't shooting. Something like 2 shots in 8 games.

Now he seems to be shooting and he's obviously back on radars. Two of his goals have been set-pieces but I've read reports of open play shots so he seems to still be an option.

But is this new-found shooting just due to being played in a false nine? Or is it something to do with Koeman or just one season added maturity? Will he keep shooting when he goes back to the wing? Because if he doesn't, and he's back to relying on assists, I'm wondering if he's worth a midfield spot.

            Thoughts?

Over quite a short period though, and (almost?) all from assists.

Absolutely love watching him play but if he isn't going to shoot, and especially if his buddy Lukaku leaves, I don't know what to make of his prospects.

He'd be well suited to that. He scored a good few international goals too now that I think of it so I guess that could point to it being a Martinez effect.

I watched him a lot during his time at Barca B. His problem then was that he was sometimes too greedy and would shoot unnecessarily.
The two times I saw him play for the main Barca squad, he was still greedy and wouldn't pass, every time he got the ball he would just run out to the corner and try and cut inside and shoot. His time at Barca B this was seen as a trait of his, the fact he wasnt afraid to take defenders on and have a shot on goal.
When playing for the full squad however I think it was seen as a negative and he wasn't adapting his play.
I think this is why during his early times at Everton he was a lot more reserved than usual on the ball but I think now he is realising that his 'greediness' is his strength so I think we will see him playing a lot more direct this year and not being afarid to shoot! 😀

Rashford at 7.0 will only be a bench warmer. That money could be better spent elsewhere. Dier is not so hot for me since he's now classified as midfielder. He won't be scoring so can't expect much in terms of point return. Same goes for Henderson.

Overall, this would have been a good team for the last few rounds of last season, but not for this season.

I just rate that Lei defence. People forget that Lei has been the best team in the league for a year and a half now. On top of that you have a defender who is on set pieces, is quality when it comes to attacking and is an absolute BAPs beast. He got the most BAPS last year despite playing 600 minutes lesser than Williams who was #2 for BAPS.

I agree that he's not an FPL type of player, and I'm fairly certain I won't have him, but I reckon that over the season he will outscore many of the other players in that price range. 5.5 for a nailed on City mid is still quite cheap imo 🙂

                  Underpriced: Walker and PVA.

                  Over-priced: Mane and Musa.

6 goals and 4 assists as a defender at 5.0 is a bargain in my opinion, plus I don't think Sunderland will struggle as much this year in terms of clean sheets.

I like Koné at 4.5m with goal threat also.

I think he should be a lot closer to Aguero in terms of price given he has outscored him over last 2 years..

                        Fair dues.

Last season people were saying he wasn't worth the money also.

                        Then he hit 200pts.

Backing Spurs to go very strongly again this season.. Wanyama will make them even more solid and Kane Alli Eriksen Dier etc i expect to continue to improve

For me Wanyama was the proper DMC at Southampton not Schneiderlin.

I voiced that on here at the time it was pretty much dismissed.

I think he's a great buy for Spurs.

Thinking Vardy nailed on pens from the start of the season could represent the same value as Kane last year myself.

Yes that's fair Schneiderlin was a little more box to box with the Saints.. certainly more so than Wanyama... Vardy will go well again i agree

A bit of a trend emerging.

Firmino & Foster getting a lot of mentions.

As is Mané as a negative.

I think Siggy could have a lonely season carrying Swansea with no players around him I think it could impact his points scoring potential.

You don't fancy Vardy & Alli to score well again?

Kane to start slow IMO like last season. But that is a pretty solid team there Sir.

Loving the Valencia punt - I'm taking a gamble on that one also. Would really like to have Firmino in my team also but will likely wait until the fixtures get a bit easier.
