Having already drafted in talented young players such as Jordon Ibe, Lewis Cook and Lys Mousset in this transfer window, Bournemouth signed left-back Brad Smith from Liverpool on Wednesday. The 22-year-old arrives at Dean Court for a reported fee worth up to £6 million including add-ons.

After penning a four-year contract with the Cherries, the Australian international is determined to earn more pitch time after struggling to convince at Anfield:

“It all happened quite quickly. I knew there was a bit of interest and then they put the bid in, Liverpool accepted and it went from there. I flew to America (with Liverpool) and was there for about five days. Once I found out the bid had been accepted, I stopped training with the team to make sure everything went the right way. It’s a great stadium here and it’s a great opportunity for me to come and play in front of the fans. Hopefully I’ll do well, learn a lot and progress in my career”.

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Smith’s big break came when he was scouted as a teenager by Liverpool. He moved over to England at the age of 14, and progressed through the academy to make his first-team debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 2013.

That would be Smith’s only appearance of the 2013/14 season, though, and he would spend the opening months of the following campaign on loan at Swindon Town, where he played 10 matches in all competitions, registering one assist.

In September last year, Smith signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, but while he managed 10 first-team appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists, three of his four Premier League outings came when manager Jurgen Klopp rested many of his regular starters around the Europa League campaign.

Due to Smith’s parents being English, the defender was eligible to play for both England and Australia at international level. He featured for England at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, playing 16 times in total, before deciding to represent Australia. He made his senior debut for the Socceroos in September 2014 against Saudi Arabia, and currently has nine caps to his name. He has also played eight matches at Under 23 level for Australia, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

Costing a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Smith’s acquisition will obviously put us on alert to the prospect of a cut-price route into Bournemouth’s back-four.

The new boy was handed his first start against Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, less than 24-hours after Charlie Daniels was the preferred left-back against Reading.

It’s fair to say that Smith faces a tough task to nail down a starting berth for the beginning of the season. Given that Daniels racked up an impressive three goals and five assists last term, and ranked fifth among defenders for key passes, it seems like the left-back berth is his to lose at present.

So far, Daniels is currently owned by 5.9% of FPL managers, more than double any other Cherries defender.

There’s no doubt that Daniels’ price rise to 5.0 is off-putting, though, bearing in mind that Bournemouth conceded 67 times last term and served up just seven clean sheets.

Similarly, Steve Cook’s valuation has also climbed out of the budget bracket on the back of four goals and two assists last season – having carried a strong set-piece threat last season, finishing joint-fifth among defenders for shots in the box with 21, helping him claim four goals and two assists.

At 4.5, then, Simon Francis currently makes the most persuasive case for consideration as the Cherries prepare to face Palace, West Brom, Watford and Hull in the opening eight Gameweeks.

The new skipper produced just one key pass less than Daniels last season despite featuring at centre-half on numerous occasions and with Adam Smith only just returning from injury to earn 45 minutes against Cardiff on Saturday, the versatile Francis could start the season at right-back.

It’s worth noting, though, that Francis is looking to become a regular in central defence this term, which suggests that Adam Smith – also costing 4.5 – could also be one to monitor if he claims the right-back slot once his fitness is up to scratch.

Despite last season’s defensive record, it’s somewhat surprising to see that the Cherries were the fifth most resilient team in terms of minutes per shot conceded in 2015/16, while they ranked seventh for shots conceded inside the box.

Ultimately, there’s too much uncertainty over Brad Smith’s minutes to take unnecessary risks, in spite of such a budget-friendly price tag. His arrival now offers Howe two viable options at left-back, which, in turn, lessens the likelihood of Nathan Ake featuring there. The on-loan Chelsea man was utilised in this position whilst at Watford last year and is now determined to nail down a central midfield role for the Cherries. At 4.5 and listed as a defender, his situation is also clearly worth monitoring – Ake made his debut as a centre-half on Friday evening against Reading.

I think this year has been the hardest year to create a team!!

    Lots of expensive options
No team with a run of stand out fixtures
and only 2 weeks to go

Absolutely agree. Have ended up back on Zlatan purely because pretty much all the other big options I like have too much uncertainty surrounding them (Vardy injury, Kane dip in form/tiredness from Euros, Costa injury/potential move, Lukaku potential move). By contrast there are just too many good options in midfield that missing out on any of KDB, Mkh, Firmino, Sanchez, Mahrez, Payet etc worries me.

True, but i'm pretty sure that is beeing said every year 🙂

No team with a good run of fixtures is because this year there are more strong teams then any year before, there is like 10 teams who can beat anyone, home or away.

    Thoughts on this? -

    Courtois - Jakupovic

    Shaw - Reid - Friend - Souare - Evans

    Hazard - Mkhitaryan - Ayew - Townsend - Capoue

    Aguero - Lukaku - Gray

Pretty standard for a non Kibra/Kubra team - balance is okay, defence looks a tad weaker than other teams I've seen here.

I thought about it for a while - and whilst I think Benteke has brilliant potential, he's in the same mental category as Sterling - suffering a significant loss of confidence....

So if the move happens, I'm going to wait and see how he adjusts.

          here's a bunch non-educated guesses
Azpi> Terry in Conte's system Azpi and Ivan wont attack as much.
Pieters rotates with 4.0 playing Lenihan--don't rec just saying.
Shaw>Williams (Souare rotates) 2nd by 1pt in def bonus
I know Gray is on fire but to get Kun I rotate Carroll and Long. SOT and WHU are the bast roation by a mile for the first 5gw's. sorry that was lengthy

I'm personaly not a fan of leaving 6,5 forward on the bench every week(or 6,0 mid) but its a decent team, good luck. Only problem i see is if Ibra,Kane or Sturr start to score a lot it could be a problem raising 5 mil to get them (Haz or Mkhi downgrade obviously but they could start the season well and then it would be hard to ditch one of them).

Many (including me) wouldn't believe so much in "attacking cover" - attacking players should be picked on their own individual ability to score, particularly the most premium players (people doubling up on Kdb and Aguero is perhaps a good example of this)

Personally I'd go deulofeu anyway. Lukaku may well end up moving so hard to tell at this stage

I know 4th midfield is a risky optio and anyone could come good, but Ibe stats offer little hope. Fischer for me and fixtures are not bad. Valencia great optio. Based on end of season stats last year but is he nailed?

Sorry did not even notice Ibra in there. Excellent team considering this. At least a 9 out of 10. Can I copy paste?

Anyone know if Redmond is nailed on? Soton don't have too many pacey players. He should be the one to take Mane's place no?

    Thoughts on these fellas

    Heaton - Pickford

    FMori - Gabs/other 5.0 - Naylor + Jevans rotating h/a apart from 2 weeks all season - Alex Bruce

    Mahrez - Hazard - Eriksen - Routledge - Fletcher

    Kun - Zlatan - Gray

Think better options that Routledge and Fletcher available.

Right, I can't decide between Mahrez or Hazard so I am having both! Now where to take the hit?

    a)
    Mkhitaryan - Hazard - Mahrez - 4.5m - 4.5m (Fletcher/Hojbjerg)

    Aguero - Lukaku - Negrado

    b)
    Mkhitaryan - Hazard - Mahrez - Fischer - 4.5m (Hojbjerg)

    Aguero - Lukaku - 5.5m (Grabban?)

The other option would be to downgrade Lukaku and go with something like this:

      c)
      Mkhitaryan - Hazard - Mahrez - Deulofeu - 4.5m

      Aguero - 6.5m - 6.5m (Long/Negredo)

      Leaves me with 0.5m too

Changing twice a day :-D, but currently on:

    Heaton, Jakupovic
Alderweireld, Gabriel, Funes Mori, Francis, Lenihan
    Hazard, Silva, Eriksen, Townsend, Mirallas
    Agüero, Gray, Wilson

    My worries:
Is Funes Mori nailed on? (If so, the man seems capable to score... If not, I was thinking of Wes Morgan, or maybe a WBA defender)
Is Gabriel nailed on? (now that Meresacker is injured)
    Heaton or Foster?
    Mirallas or Deulofeu?
Downgrade somebody (Silva maybe?) to upgrade in other areas?

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance! 😉

      1. Will become clearer once stones goes or stays
      2. Yes, unless Arsenal sign another CB
      3. If just one, foster
      4. Deulofeu personally
      5. Very expensive midfield, 6.5 is your cheapest. Playing 3-5-2?

        Yes, 3-5-2 was my idea.
I could as well downgrade Wilson for an even cheaper forward. But I think Wilson can be a bench player cheap enough and one who can give me points when needed as well.

Tadic or Ayew? I like Tadic more but those Swansea fixtures can't be ignored!

A good replacement for Ayew if he leaves?

The fixtures can be ignored, burnley are solid enough and the fixtures after the first two are hoorrible

I wouldn't consider the Swansea fixtures for Ayew. He'll be a West Ham player this week.

The thing which made me Happiest when the pricings came out was Tadic at 7.5

I think he's class and playing at #10 behind two strikers is very enticing

Obviously is Ayew is guaranteed OOP then he is also tempting, just all depends on where he ends up/if Swansea sign someome

Ayew has a great two opening fixtures, being played as a striker, and can easily be swapped to Tadic after.

That being said he is in a transfer saga with West Ham atm, so there's a lot of question marks there atm.
