Great Expectations

While Anthony Martial may have arrived at Old Trafford last September as something of an unknown quantity, the exorbitant amount it took to sign him from Monaco meant much was expected from the-then 19-year-old attacker.

The Frenchman ended the campaign with a reasonable return of 11 goals and six assists from 31 Premier League appearances, playing predominantly on the left wing, with his personal highlights including a goal on his debut against Liverpool, while he also scored a last minute winner in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.

A fifth place finish in the Premier League saw Louis van Gaal replaced by Jose Mourinho as Man United manager, and with the Portuguese boss able to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, it’s expected that United will considerably improve on the meagre 49 goals they managed last term.

Having had a year to find his feet in England, Martial looks poised to better his attacking output from last season this time around, and reclassified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, is likely to prove a popular option for Fantasy managers.

  • The Van Gaal era at Old Trafford saw United regress significantly as an attacking force, so the arrival of Mourinho should see some improvement on that front. While the Portuguese manager’s sides haven’t always been the most attack-minded, Chelsea did score 73 goals in their 2014/15 title winning campaign, more than any side managed last term. Expectations for the likes of Martial should certainly be higher this time around then.
  • With Mkhitaryan’s creativity and Ibrahimovic’s ability to bring his team-mates into play, United’s forward line should be much improved this season. Martial only managed a goal attempt every 48.6 minutes last time out, but with the new boys providing 15 and 13 league assists for Dortmund and PSG respectively, the Frenchman’s ability to run in behind opposition backlines could come to fruition more often.
  • Martial impressively produced 213 penalty box touches last season, just two less than Tottenham’s Harry Kane despite playing seven less matches and being mainly stationed on the left flank. A goal conversion rate of 19.3% compared favourably to the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (15.8%), Kane (15.7%) and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (15.3%), so if he United can create him more opportunities, Martial’s clinical nature in front of goal should see an improvement on last year’s 11 strikes.
  • Martial was a major beneficiary of the Bonus Point System (BPS) last season, accruing 21 in total, a number that would have ranked him sixth among midfielders. Only Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (274) and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (255) managed more dribbles than Martial’s 207 last season among midfielders and forwards, which is one area the former Monaco attacker should continue to shine in. His reclassification as a midfielder will also see him earn an extra point for each goal scored and clean sheet registered, so after United claimed 18 shut-outs last term, there is clearly plenty of scope for Martial to better his 141 points in FPL from last season.
  • The 20-year-old currently sits in just 7.5% of FPL 15-man squads, whereas fellow United midfielder Mkhitaryan has an ownership of 19.1%, with Ibrahimovic leading the way among Mourinho’s side with 31.8% ownership. The France international is shaping up to be a differential heading into Gameweek 1, then, and considering his place in the starting XI looks pretty secure, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard offering back-up, he certainly appears an overlooked option at this point in time.
  • Given United’s generally favourable start (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) to the new campaign, many Fantasy managers will be trying to find a spot for at least one of their attackers. With Martial and Mkhitaryan (both 9.5) offering a 2.0 saving from the Swede, the pair may offer the superior value, particularly if Rooney maintains spot-kick duties ahead of the former PSG striker. With Mkhitaryan still an unknown quantity when it comes to English football, despite his impressive attacking statistics whilst playing for Dortmund, Martial could be the one to favour from the off.

If Pep decides to replicate his Barcelona setup, we'd be looking at:

    -----------------Hart---------------
    Sagna-Kompany-Stones-Clichy
    ----------Fernandinho-----------
    Gundogan-----------Silva------
    De Bruyne-Aguero-Nolito

Could see Toure starting instead of Gundogan, Otamendi instead of Kompany, and maybe Sterling instead of De Bruyne in GW1.

He's arrived late to training. I think the Arsenal friendly will give us more hints. I think we now know for a fact after Sane's comments that Sane won't be starting, so it comes down to whether or not Sterling will start.

A lineup like this would probably make Nolito the best choice of the City midfielders, but it would come with rotation risk.

I'd rather get Alli and not touch him for the entire year.

        Eriksen: 178pts (2936 mins)
        Alli: 166pts (2471 mins)

I always tend to favour goal scoring mids because of the two extra points compared to assists and the bap system favours them aswell. They're also more explosive making them better captain material.

What's with the Fischer love? 24 goals in 79 games in the Dutch league is good..

Is still feel Gradel is the best 5.5 mid:

He scored 17 goals in a season in the French league and plays for the more attacking team. Looking at his career starts, he scores a goal every 2.62 games... Natural goalscorer me thinks 🙂

Fischer's appearances are skewed because he was used as a sub so much. Last season he made 28 league appearances but only 10 of them were starts.

Differential FPL was my go-to app, it's fantastic as long as you understand its limitations (i.e. it's only useful for tracking specific rivals, not entire leagues).
The live scores, bonus point predictions and notifications are excellent.

To be able to check live updates of your own and all your rivals teams as well as others you're interested in, across leagues, including the current projected bonus points was invaluable.

Like fff it also did notifications on price changes and injuries suspensions etc.

Just the best app I've tried including both free and paid for (including fff) by some distance.

Now the author Steve Penna is unable to continue with it but has made the source code available and is hoping someone can update for the new season

Hull: Jakupovic, Bruce, Maguire, Davies, Odubajo, Elmohamady, Meyler, Huddlestone, Diame, Powell, Diomande. Subs: Kuciak, Tymon, Robertson, Livermore, Taylor, Aluko, Hernandez.

Arsenal: Ospina, Chambers, Mertesacker, Gabriel, Gibbs, Flamini, Elneny, Walcott, Iwobi, Campbell, Giroud. Subs: Macey, Monreal, Ramsey, Reine-Adelaide, Willock, Ozil, Sanchez.

I would do Fabregas and Watmore to Sigurdsson and Fischer/Gradel.

What is it with Chelsea players that's making people avoid them at all costs? Aren't Chelsea bound to bounce back after last season, Fabregas was awesome at times the year before.

Not avoiding them at all. I have no intention of taking Hazard out of my team. I just think two Chelsea midfielders is a tad extreme given the value on offer in the mid-premium range.

The member area is great for comparing players who were in the premier league last season. But it would be great if you could get similar data for players new to the league.

You would obviously need to takes some of the data witha pinch of salt as different leagues contains varying quality of teams/players.

Generally you can get basic goal/assist data easily enough but jsut imahine being able to get stats and compare Martial and Micky for example.

It would be like comparing an apple to an orange. Compare them in the Community Shield. Micky obviously has the better stats as is more involved.

I know it would a bit but there are always entrants to the league who who we know little about and do not get the opportunity to see play prior to GW1.

I do appreciate the downside as well though and don't expect it to happen

Need some RMT help for Sky Fantasy Footy . Prices are just as crazy as they are in actual transfer window !

    Forster
    Williams (SWA/EVE) , Dann , Dawson
Coutinho , Sigurdsson , Tadic , Erikson , £7M or less (looking at Morrison WBA)
    Aguero Zlatan

    Any advice ?

Just go with the one who doesn't have another forward who wants his starting spot.

I have the Pre-Season essential pack and it has some interesting research on the top 50 players from last season as well as All-time top 50. Was a bit disappointed though, that they don't offer actual team analysis like they did last year as this time it's only statistics and possible starting lineup.

All in all a good resource but I think you'll get along just fine without it, too.

Just made a 3-5-2 team and I quite like the look of my front 8

    Hazard Mhki Firmino Tadic Deulofeu
    Aguero Negredo Diomande

Pretty much mine except I have KdB and Fischer over Firmino and Deulofeu.

Didn't know you were also going with a 3-5-2

When I look at each of the bigger teams (except City), I just prefer a middfielder over a striker: Hazard (Chelsea), Martial/Mhki (ManU), Sanchez/Ozil (Arsenal), Alli (Spurs), Firmino/Coutinho (Liverpool) ....

If Lukaku leaves Everton and they will play Deulofeu as a striker, I strongly believe he is close to a must have. KDB is certainly someone who is on my watchlist but might miss out on gw1 so...

If you go 352, your strikers need to be Kun and Ibra imo

This would mean downgrading one of my middfielders heavily. I rate Mhki or Martial higher than Zlatan actually
