Having only brought in goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and youngsters Bassala Sambou and Chris Ranshaw in the transfer window, Everton completed their first major signing of the summer earlier this week with the capture of Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye, after triggering the Senegal international’s £7.1 million buyout clause.

The 26-year-old agreed a four-year deal with the Merseysiders, and speaking about his first significant new addition since taking over at Goodison Park, Everton manager Ronald Koeman outlined what Toffees fans can expect from the former Lille midfielder:

“Idrissa will provide quality in our squad in the midfield and we want to increase the quality in the team. He was one of the players last season with the best record in interceptions and pressing in the midfield”.

The History

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, featuring alongside the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign, although he once again failed to register any attacking returns. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, only managing one assist, before establishing a key player for Les Dogues.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals from 32 league appearances, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered three assists. His performances attracted reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace, but it was Aston Villa who landed the midfielder last summer in a deal reportedly worth around £9 million.

The new boy earned just a single assist league outings, though his ball-winning displays in the centre of the park caught the eye in spite of Villa’s relegation to the Championship.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011, and has since racked up 33 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to find the net for his country.

The Prospects

Whether in the 4-2-3-1 set-up Koeman mainly employed at Southampton, or the 3-5-2 trialled against Man United in midweek, it’s expected that Gueye will compete for a central midfield position along with James McCarthy and Gareth Barry.

Considering he ranked second only to N’Golo Kante last season for both successful tackles (108) and interceptions (141), the summer signing looks odds-on to establish himself as a regular starter as the new manager adds more energy in the centre of the park.

Gueye’s arrival on Merseyside should help provide some much needed protection in front of the back four, given the Toffees conceded 55 goals last season, with only the bottom five sides letting in more. The appointment of Koeman should also help in that regard, bearing in mind that Southampton held the joint-fifth best defensive record in the top flight last term, conceding just 41 goals.

So while Gueye’s Fantasy appeal is likely to be limited to games that reward defensive actions such as FanDuel and DraftKings, he should help bolster the appeal of their nailed on defenders such as Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman.

Both have seen their prices drop to 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, and with Gueye’s presence in midfield likely to allow them more freedom to bomb forward down the flanks, we could see their attacking potential increase – certainly, Koeman’s decision to utilise the duo as wing-backs earlier this week has boosted their appeal.

Ramiro Funes Mori (5.0) is another to keep an eye on, though, given the Argentinian’s set-piece threat, having scored four goals in just 28 league matches last term, while he averaged a goal attempt every 97.1 minutes, better than the likes of Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann (114.8) and Leicester’s Wes Morgan (172.4).

In terms of the Everton midfield, Gueye – despite a favourable 5.0 price tag in FPL – is unlikely to merit our attention due to his little attacking threat.

Both Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu have been impressive during pre-season thus far, with the latter having netted three times playing primarily as a “false nine” in the absence of Romelu Lukaku, after the Belgian was handed an extended break following his participation at the Euro 2016.

With speculation linking Lukaku with a return to Chelsea, Deulofeu may offer some out of position potential heading into Gameweek 1 should the Belgian depart, but that will likely be short lived, with Koeman certain to bring in attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Everton’s fixture list over the opening seven Gameweeks (TOT, wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL) is particularly favourable though, facing just one of last season’s top eight, so Toffees players look good options as we look to finalise our initial 15-man squads.

So while Gueye himself offers little Fantasy appeal, his energy and ability to break up opposition attacks should be good news for the prospects of both the Everton defence and flair players such as Barkley and Deulofeu.

Nothing major. Playing Feghouli every week might hurt, when he isn't guaranteed to start, and I prefer Foster to Mandanda, but otherwise fine.

For all the problems and turmoils about Hull City and the state it is in right now, their starting XI doesn't look the worse. Given that nobody else gets injured, they'll probably go:

Jakupovic; Elmohamady, Davies, Clackstone, Robertson; Clucas, Huddlestone, Livermore/Meyler, Snodgrass; Hernandez, Diomande. (4-4-2)

*** Bench strength is like zero, and CB is a big worry zone, but they've won their last 3 friendlies, don't think they will get rolled over as much as people think.

-1. Capoue is there for a guaranteed 2 pts all season. Nothing more; nothing less. Fixtures are meaningless. The worst thing a 5th midfielder can be is a rotation risk.

Really like it...mostly because it's very similar to mine.

      Stones > Terry
      Tadic > Lamela
      Ramirez > Gradel

Are the only major points of difference.

I'm backing Kane to score another 20 this year. The theory that he can't score without Dembele is just bonkers.

      2.

No. 1 GK and strikers are obviously grand, but you'll struggle to have 11 starters, have literally no backup in case somebody gets dropped or injured, and the midfield and defence are very second row on starters too.

Monitoring Stones/Lukaku situation but I figure whether they stay or go I would prob keep them.

    Foster/Mandanda

    Shaw – Azpilicueta – Stones (Friend/Pieters)

Mhkitaryan – Eriksen – Siggy – Bolasie (Feghouli)

    Aguero – Lukaku – Negredo

Is anyone tempted to pop £5.5m Borini up top as their third striker?

I could roll out a 3-5-2 in GW1 with Borini warming the bench and then promote him to the first team for Sunderland's crunch home game against Middlesbrough in GW2?

His record in Pre-Season is pretty sharp! - I'd be replacing Shane Long and using the additional budget to upgrade Townsend to Tadic.

    So,

    A) Long & Townsend

    or,

    B) Borini & Tadic

You cannot compare Aguero to anything else.

I think this is possibly the first time I've seen one of these with Aguero in!

Depends if you've got other captaincy options. If not, probably Aguero and Ramirez.

Over the course of the season though I'd be almost certain that B) would score more points.

      Weird logic, I know.

    Morning all!!
Any chance of a RMT?? Much obliged!

    Foster/Heaton
    Shaw/Stones/PVA/Pieters/Paredes
    Silva/Eriksen/Townsend/Deulofeu/Fegouhli
    Kun/Ibra/Long

Not to sure on Silva, hwoever the midfield and forward are v. strong

      generally a great team, 8.5/10

Sound, cheers. Happy with the balance of it myself and I am hoping that if Silva stays fit that Pep will get him firing on all cylinders. Could end up being a bargain at 9 mil!

      3/10

      Stones is rotation risk.
      Downgrade PVA to a £4.5. m
      Upgrade Paredas to a £4.5m
Not hugely keen on Silva at £9m, particularly with the number of options they've got in there now.
Townsend and Deulofeu flatter to deceive.
Fegouhli cost £1m more than a 5th midfielder should, if you're not planning on playing 3-5-2 sem regularly.

    How am I looking?

    Courtois Jako
Shaw Baines Friend Evans B. Smith
    Hazard Mkhitaryan Tadic Siggy Capoue
    Aguero Gray Musa

    0.5 itb

Undecided on whether to go with Musa or not.

Aiit, time to RMT. I'll rate yours back if you want 🙂

    Courtois - Jak
    Simpson - Pieters - Friend - Evans - 4.0
    Haz - Mahrez - Ozil - Bolasie - Cap
    Kun - Rooney - Gray

    Cheers guys

Wouldn't go with Rooney. Ozil won't start GW1 I'd say. Pieters is a bit of a card magnet.

        Martial and Giroud then...?
        Kone for Pieters?

Giroud not likely to start either. I would go with Mkhitaryan over Martial personally.

I would downgrade Ozil to Tadic and upgrade Pieters to Shaw.

Ozil rumoured to not be playing v Liv

Rooney is a risk but could pay off, thought mou played 4231 so dont know how thats working

Pretty weak defence ill be honest

      Bolasie is risky, too inconsistent

      7/10

I have him in as martial and Musa is 4.0 m cheaper than Ibrah and mahrez, however i need assurance he will play

I'm not feeling Alexis , but that could be because im a Lpool fan and want to win gw1

I think its also on money spent by leister and a difference from the long/gray/Wilson/negredo haha
Had fuchs as well but may think of baines instead of stones if I can find £0.5m from somewhere...

Anyone here (Charity Shield) dependent thinking of starting with Musa?

If so I've got 12.5 for 2 mids.
    Townsend&Redmond?
    Deo&Bolasie?
    Tadic&5.5?

Yes I am along with kun and ibra, just tricky to fit in haha
My question is bolasie or Townsend as a way into palace attack. Is townsend nailed on??

That's the think. Townsend, Deo, and Redmond could all end up upfront. But they're 3 risks right? Maybe Townsend less so.

not really you're trying the 5-man 4.5 rotation right? make your keepers 9.0. IMO

the back 5 rotate well over the first 6 weeks, Not rotating keepers this season, due to having a nightmere last season with Ruddy and Butland. Missed out on loads of Butland points last year due to playing Ruddy.

    Something slightly different:

    Foster
    Shaw, Gabriel, Souare
    Hazard, Eriksen, Wallcott, Tadic
    Augero, Vardy, Gray

    Sub: Jaku, Kone, Friend, Capoue

Wallcott playing as striker till Giroud returns. Vardy on pens and Hull first game.

    Off topic, any help appreciated...

Trying to find simply the stats for Brendan Rodgers and Garry Monk but only for the premier league games they managed Swansea for? Just total games in charge in the PL, and the amount won/drawn/lost for each

    Cheers

Why no love for Feghouli. Forget about last season. (see the 4 seasons before)

    Goals+Assists
    2014- 14 from 33 (6g, 8a)
    2013- 14 from 32 (4g, 10a)
    2012- 9 from 27 (3g, 6a)
    2011- 14 from 30 (6g, 8a)

I dont think there is any other 5.5 mid with better stats no ?

Add to that he's a very classy player
