After three successful seasons with Barcelona, Cesc Fabregas’ return to the top-flight proved pivotal to Chelsea’s 2014/15 title-winning campaign.

Snapped up by Jose Mourinho after former club Arsenal opted against reacquiring him, the playmaker delivered three goals and 19 assists in his first year at Stamford Bridge to leap back into Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ plans.

Chelsea’s disastrous defence of their Premier League crown in 2015/16 forced a reassessment.

The Blues simply failed to rediscover their cutting edge and despite replacing Mourinho with Guus Hiddink midway through the season, their big-hitters proved a bitter disappointment.

Having earned just two assists in the first 20 Gameweeks, Fabregas racked up five goals and as many assists in the final 18 rounds of fixtures but it was a case of too little, too late for the Spaniard.

Although he ultimately collected just 133 points, Fabregas was still only two points off Willian as the top-scoring Chelsea player in FPL and comfortably bettered Eden Hazard’s tally of 104 points, despite the latter’s late run of four goals in the final five fixtures.

The Prospects

Last term aside, there can be no doubting Fabregas’ potential as a consistent Fantasy asset.

Indeed, the 2015/16 campaign was the first time in his last seven active Premier League seasons that the playmaker has failed to provide at least ten assists.

Even when adding in last term’s tally, Fabregas has racked up 98 assists over that time frame – that’s an average of 14 assists per season.

Considering that reliable output, Fabregas’ price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League may well prove to be a bargain if he can remain a regular starter under new manager Antonio Conte.

With N’Golo Kante on board, Conte’s preferred formation is likely to dictate how we assess the Chelsea midfield. Conte had utilised a 4-2-4 in pre-season but switched to 4-1-4-1 for the Frenchman’s debut against AC Milan, with the new boy screening in front of the Blues’ back-four.

The 4-2-4 is perhaps the less enticing of the two. Kante certainly looks nailed on, which would leave Fabregas, Oscar and Nemanja Matic battling it out for the role alongside the former Leicester ball-winner.

Clearly, the latter formation offers Conte more scope with his central midfield selection and could allow Fabregas to benefit from Kante’s energy, affording him the freedom to dictate matters in the centre of the park.

Identically priced to the Spain international, Oscar is another contender who could also play his way into consideration. The Brazilian netted twice against Milan in midweek – including a converted spot-kick whilst Hazard was on the pitch – and, having started just 20 times last term, will be looking to establish himself as a viable option under the Italian.

Chelsea’s lack of European commitments – due to their tenth placed finish in 2015/16 – also limits the likelihood of rest and rotation this time around and affords Conte the chance to make his stamp on the Blues’ starting XI.

At present, Hazard’s two goals as a sub in a recent friendly against Real Madrid suggests the Belgian is gearing up for a revival under Conte. Should he be utilised through the middle – as he was against Madrid – there’s every chance that the former Lille man will emerge as the most enticing option at Stamford Bridge.

Nonetheless, Fabregas – who is currently owned by 8% of FPL managers – cannot be overlooked. Granted, he doesn’t have the same explosive potential as Hazard but, if he secures a place in Conte’s first XI plans, history suggests he could make a mockery of that very kind price tag.

By game week 4 do you think there will have been any major price hikes?
I can see Aguero, Hazard, Shaw and Stones going up 0.3 max.

Can't see any moving more than 0.3+ in 3 weeks.

      No way Aguero rises.
Highest price in the game, pretty high ownership, people who don't have him will struggle to get him in unless they WC.
He can only go down in price.

Right, start at the back. Best 4.5m GK pairing?

Both first choice and decent rotation, no need to be perfect.

Cheers! It's maybe a bit punty but a lot is invested in attack. Maybe Musa > Gray and upgrade Eriksen. Redmond & Townsend I like because they're very attacking and probably nailed.

I think your mid is fine, my concern would be Townsend as I think he could face some rotation.

Up top I'd be a bit wary of Musa being played as a winger effectively leaving you playing 3-5-2. Because of that I've plumped for out and out strikers at 6.5m.

Thanks, you make some good points! Community Shield sunday will probably give us some answers on Musa. Yeah Townsed is maybe a bit punty, but he's a great FPL option, very goal minded. Maybe I do Townsend > Feghouli and upgrade Eriksen.

International break gives players to pull the trigger to play the value game as traditionally lots of transfers done on the off week. If you plan to do it early you may like to consider a more putty team with the safety of a early wildcard.

Also useful if there was a standout out transfer before the closure of the window which would mean that you would have to resign team to accommodate.

Other strategy is to keep in your back pocket in case of injury Armageddon at some point

Given the KDB news, just a reminder that we can expect other Euro 2016 participants to miss out in the first couple of gameweeks, particularly the midfielders and forwards at clubs with squad depth...

In an attempt to better understand the impact of Euro 2016/Copa America on the game minutes of players in gameweeks 1-3, I've had a look at Euro 2012 and it's impact on gameweeks 1-3 of the 2012-2013 season. There was no Copa America that year.

There were 48 days between the Euro 2012 Final and the start of the Premier League season (the gap is just 34 days this time).

There were 56 players in Euro 2012 tournament squads who played some part in gameweeks 1-3 of the new season.

    Some key takeaways:
    - Goalkeepers were immune from rest/rotation. All first-choice keepers played every available minute of those gameweeks (Given was dropped for GW3)
    - A couple of noteworthy players had reduced gametime in GW1 and subsequently played the full 90 in GWs 2 & 3 - Robin van Persie (22 mins in GW1), Giroud (26).
Cabaye and Balotelli were substituted in both GWs 1 & 2 before playing the full 90 mins in GW3
    - Several players were rested/rotated completely for GW2, including John Terry, Nani, Lescott, Clichy and Downing - all from clubs with the squad depth to do it
    - Defenders were much safer than midfielders and attackers. The 12 defenders played an average of 82.5 mins in GW1, 21 midfielders an average of 53.5 mins, 9 forwards 52.8 mins.
    - Of those 30 midfielders and forwards, only 4 played every minute of the first three gameweeks (Torres, Gerrard, Ben Arfa and Walters).

Summary - You're right to be wary of players who have come back to pre-season training late (Ozil, Sanchez, Payet, Vardy, Martial, Giroud, Lukaku, Kane, Alli etc). Big clubs in particular will rotate in a way they perhaps wouldn't have otherwise. Pay close attention to the pressers of course. The quick turnaround from Euro 2016 will mean game time will be managed for certain players, and some of it might not be obvious until gameweeks 2 and 3.

*I've removed Agger (sent off in GW1) and Rooney (injured in GW2 from the 2012 data completely)

Anybody here having borini on their radar? 5.5 forward for moyes' Sunderland with Defoe doubtful. He was quite a handful towards the end of last season

If he is to play up top, yes, but he played out wide last season. On penalties though.

Right. After some thoughtful feedback I have readjusted my team. Please tell me its perfect so I can get back to work.

    Heaton / Foster
Shaw / VVD with Byram / Souare / Friend rotation
    Hazard / Silva / Mahrez / Townsend / Ramirez
    Ibrahimovic / Gray / Carroll

1.5 ITB to upgrade Mahrez to Sanchez or Ibra > Aguero depending on who stands out.

I see Sanchez is well and truly out of the template. Fair enough, I'm happy to be in the minority on that one, even with a slight bench risk game 1 (if you believe he won't start). Also not seen one Ozil yet. I'd understand not many having him, and of course a template emerges, but not one? That's bonkers. The Arsenal attack has been very good to me that past couple of seasons, I'm not sure why it is so out of favour at the moment.

Would say that Sanchez being benched is a moderate to high chance

He almost certainly won't play the whole game. Perhaps a late impact sub?

Ozil isn't in most teams because there are doubts over his availability in GW1. Same for Sanchez

hmmm, is zlatan naild on? im fearing mourinho using him as some kind of super sub due to his age.

I think that it is more likely that he will be subbed early, but who knows?

I think Rashford is the planned super sub, at least at the start.

      Nailed on 100%.

No one benches Zlatan except maybe Zlatan.

I'm so confident he's nailed on that I named my team. ...... 'Zlat's Farrrked Bro!'

I think he's nailed on, with maybe caution over his minutes in the first couple

For those of you like me who are unsure whether Musa starts against Hull, a few things to consider are:

    1. Yes he only scored 2 goals against a second string Barca defence, but is Hull's current depleted defence going to be any better?

    2. Yes he may not have premier League experience, however his past stats are impressive, and wouldn't a weak Hull side be the perfect opportunity to give him his first taste of PL action over 70-90 minutes?

    3. Based on his previous stats, transfer fee, and the skill he displayed in scoring those two goals, is it fair to assume he's a much better player than both Albrighton or Okazaki and therefore first in line to start ahead of either player on the wing or up front?

In my opinion the answer to all those questions is yes when I think about his potential to start the season.

How do you all see it in the context of the points I've raised?

      3. One off albeit excellent perforce enough to secure him a start?

          Sorry, no offense. 😉

I didn't think anyone was going to respond initially.

          Sorry again son. 🙂

          Thanks for your thoughts.

For those saying you'll wait for the CS, what exactly will you be waiting to see? Whether he starts, or how he plays if and when he's introduced?

If he has a poor match against the best defense in the league, do you think this will really dictate if he then starts against the worst defence in the league when gw1 comes?

    Thoughts on Mane or Firmino?

    Will Delefeou start?

He does indeed, but how many will Boro score? 3 goals max in those four probably.

I'm avoiding Liverpool until after those fixtures.
