This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

Captain options for gw1 is not so straight forward as looking at fixtures. This is my opinion regarding the heavy hitters:

    1. Kun. Has cl midweek minutes will be limited to 60-70. He doesn't need more than that explode but that is when he is fully fit and firing not when he is lacking match fitness and sharpness. Don't see more than a goal from him.
    2. Ibra. A good option but Mou said clearly he is lacking match fitness so minutes will be limited. Like Kun, I expect a goal but no more.
    3. Arsenal assets on extended holidays and no preseason whatsoever so I would avoid.
    4. Kane. No dembele will affect Spurs. Koeman's first home game

      Hit post by mistake.

Koeman teams have a good home record.

I believe given Arsenal's depleted defense, Liverpool assets like Firmino and Mane can be very good differential. Vahrez are a safe bet against a depleted hull. Gray could be a shrewd option but owning him is enough at the moment. Hazard in a derby match given his former is a good option too. I'm just saying Kun is not a no brainer for captaincy. Owning him can be enough at this stage. A differential captain is a good way to start gw1 as mahrez proved last season

I think the problem with him is that he scored a lot of headed goals last season and Carroll will just hog all the headed chances if he's playing. Cresswell being out is also a massive blow for West Ham.

His appeal at Swansea was that he was being used up front. I would wait until we see how and where he fits into the side.

        Mid's not awful, I didn't think 🙂

I figure after last year's 43K finish and very template-like teams, I'm due a little risk in my portfolio. Of course that doesn't mean I won't drop Vardy for Gray and spread the wealth at the 11th hour.

    Posted in the DZ.

No reason why Ayew won't be a good prospect at West Ham. For two seasons at Marseille he played alongside Payet - on the left flank of a three man midfield.

During the Payet/Ayew years, here are Ayew's stats:
    2013/14
    25 starts, 6 goals, 2 assists

    2014/15
    27 starts, 10 goals, 3 assists

    That compares to:
    2015/16 at Swansea
    34 starts, 12 goals, 2 assists

OK, Ligue 1 is not the EPL. But Payet and Ayew know each other and Ayew has a good record of finding the net when playing in a wide position.

I love Butland after week5 but you can get Pieters @4.5 for stoke cover. I am a supporter of going with one keeper, however with so many new managers/injuries n systems the big teams might be in tough for CS at the start.

Cheers.. Pretty set on my defence but would honestly downgrade Sanchez + Hazard for now if I knew who else would start in the two midfields 100%.. Think Iwobi/Oscar are amazing value as long as they start.. Originally had Iwobi, Oscar, Mahrez, Ibra in place of Sanchez, Hazard, Ramirez, Gray.. Suppose I'll see what we hear this week!

    Foster / Jaku
Valencia / Byram / Souare / Friend / Kone (good rotation fixtures first 8 GWs)
    Hazard / Firmino / Tadic / Lamela / Capoue
    Aguero / Vardy / Gray

    - 1 million in the bank for flexibilty (Vardy -> Kane or Hazard -> Sanchez)

Byram place under threat now West Ham signed a new LB
