Welcome to the first Scout Picks Squad article of the season, which for the 2016/17 campaign has been revamped to offer you a greater insight into the decision making process behind each Friday’s selection.

Each midweek Mark, Paul and myself will list the 18 players we think have the best chance of success across the four positions, listing them in rank order. This article will then highlight some of the likely discussions and disagreements that will take place behind the scenes as the Scouts look to back their players and secure a place for them in the Scout Picks as well as our Spot the Differential articles.

Finally, we will also reveal the Community Champion who has been selected by our lottery to represent the community and be in with a chance of winning a £100 Amazon voucher.

Goalkeepers

This looks to be a good Gameweek for those opting for a budget friendly goalkeeper with Paul, Mark and myself all backing key value picks.

Burnley’s Tom Heaton (4.5), who faces Swansea at home, features in all three Scout Squad selections and is Mark’s top choice after Burnley kept 20 clean sheets in the Championship last season, 12 of which were at home.

Mark is also backing Middlesbrough stopper Victor Valdes and Palace’s Wayne Hennessey, who face home clashes against Stoke and West Brom respectively. Both are priced at 4.5 and of the pair Valdes has the larger FPL ownership, of 8.2% compared to Hennessey’s 5.7%.

Meanwhile, Paul and myself are both optimistic of the clean sheet prospects of two 5.0 priced stoppers. Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel (12.1% FPL ownership) faces a manager-less Hull side away, while Southampton’s Fraser Forster (4.8% FPL ownership) squares up at home to a Watford side that was amongst the bottom five sides in terms of goals scored on the road last season.

Defenders

There is a clear concensus over the prospects of 5.5 priced defenders, Southampton’s Virgil van Djik and Leicester full back Christian Fuchs, who was the fifth highest point scoring defender in FPL last term. Van Djik’s three goals and 29 goal attempts last season has also attracted the interest of 12.4% of FPL managers, compared to Fuch’s 11.9%.

Areas of contention could centre around Manchester United’s defence against Bournemouth. While Mark and Paul have shunned their backline altogether, I am opting for Antonio Valencia (also 5.5), after the right back impressed in pre-season, including three assists in Manchester United’s 5-2 win over Galatasary. With 6.5% FPL ownership Valencia is certainly the differential Manchester United option over the 18.1% owned Luke Shaw.

Both Mark and Paul have drafted in City new boy John Stones (5.0) as a result of today’s switch from Everton. Having featured in pre-season for the Toffees there should be no concerns over his fitness and considering that Pep Guardiola started with Aleksandar Kolarov and Fernando at centre-half in the 3-2 loss to Arsenal, Stones could well be fast-tracked to the first XI at home to Sunderland. He’s climbed to 20% ownership in FPL as a result of this morning’s switch.

Both Paul and Mark will also be looking to persuade me that Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann is worth his price hike to 5.5 this season on the back of five goals last term. Currently he is owned by 8% of FPL managers. Dann’s threat from set-pieces is clearly a factor, along with West Brom’s struggle for a cutting edge.

In addition, I face a tough task trying to include Chelsea’s 6.0 full back Cesar Azpilicueta in this Friday’s picks. Paul in particular believes that, on the back of a strong pre-season, West Ham are more than capable of scoring when they visit Stamford Bridge on Monday. Meanwhile, I’m backing the strong organisational skills of new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte to shackle Slaven Bilic’s side.

Midfielders

Despite some potential arguments brewing amongst the Scouts regarding midfielders there are two players where there is already strong agreement.

Dusan Tadic’s role at the tip of Southampton manager Claude Puel’s midfield diamond in pre-season has been picked up by all three of us. The 7.5 midfielder, who is also on penalties, certainly looks to be an ideal differential pick this week with just 4.8% FPL ownership. Interestingly there’s no sign of Nathan Redmond (6.0) despite his potential role up front – with Tadic clearly the preferred option until we’ve put Claud Puel’s system under scutinty.

All three Scouts have also taken note of Arsenal’s defensive problems, with Gabriel and Per Mertesacker injured and Laurent Koscielny only just returning to training. As a result they are backing Roberto Firmino (8.5) to carry on his sensational pre-season form, in which he has scored three goals, when Liverpool visit the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The midfielder is in just 8.8% of FPL teams, perhaps due to a lack of awareness of Arsenal’s defensive woes.

Areas of potential fireworks though include my pick of Alexis Sanchez (11.5), who could be set to take the striker role in the expected absence of Oliver Giroud. Mark and Paul remain unconvinced of his prospects despite the Chilean being deployed in this position in Arsenal’s friendly against Manchester City last weekend. FPL managers also agree with Paul and Mark, with just 6.6% selecting him.

Eden Hazard (10.0)’s potential to bounce back from a dire 2015/16 also looks to be a keen source of debate ahead of Friday’s picks, with Mark shunning the Chelsea man, who is being backed by Paul, myself and 16.3% of FPL managers. Instead Mark has opted for Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) as a key premium pick. He and 10.1% of FPL managers are hoping he will run riot when Sunderland visit in the early evening Saturday kick off.

Last season’s form and fixture has driven Mark and Paul’s selection of Leicester’s 9.5 priced midfielder Riyad Mahrez. Paul says:

Hull are hammered by injuries and Leicester could have a field day.

However, I feel that on the back of a tepid Community Shield display and continuing speculation about his future, Mahrez may not be in the right frame of mind to orchestrate a rout against Hull.

Paul and I may also come to blows over the inclusion of Spurs’ 8.5 priced and 13% FPL owned midfielder Dele Alli, away to Everton. While Paul will be able to say that eight of his 10 goals came on the road last term, I remain optimistic Everton under new boss Ronald Koeman will be able to handle a Spurs outfit without key midfielder Mousa Dembele, who is suspended.

Forwards

On the subject of Dembele, his absence is the major reason why Harry Kane is not in my five forward picks. Paul remains convinced that he will prevail, but Mark has also left him out after the Spurs striker only managed to score once in the nine games when Dembele was absent last term.

Elsewhere, there is an unsurprising lack of debate around the 39.4% owners Sergio Aguero (13.0)’s ability to deliver at home against Sunderland or that Jamie Vardy (10.0) will lead the charge when Leicester visit Hull.

All three Scouts have also picked Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.5), who is in 37.3% of FPL teams, for Manchester United’s visit to Bournemouth, but Mark points out this is reluctantly in his case. Mark says:

I’m taking a big risk by largely overlooking Manchester United but I genuinely think that the trip to Dean Court is a major test for them. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has to remain in my thinking but I do feel that Eddie Howe’s men are equipped to deal with him – for me, it will be the midfield runners posing the major goal threat.

Each of us has also put forward an individual pick, which may help form our thinking for our Spot the Differential articles.

For Mark, Southampton’s Shane Long (6.5), who is owned by 14.8% of FPL managers, looks set to prosper when Watford visit. His 10 goals and four assists last term certainly give him cause for optimism.

Paul remains convinced that West Ham will do well at Chelsea and believes Andy Carroll (6.5) will bring his strong pre-season form, in which he has scored four times, to Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, I think Chelsea’s 9.5 priced striker Diego Costa is being unfairly overlooked and could be set to make a mockery of his meagre 5.2% ownership, especially after getting on the score sheet in Chelsea’s final pre-season game against Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 1 will be Fantasy veteran Frankie the Gent, who is about to start his 11th FPL season. His 2010/11 rank of 17,915 is his highest finish so far.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2016/17 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

This is what a rational person's team should like like but we all want 2 premium forwards. When it is time to bring in Sanchez only place to go to fund it for most of us will be front line...

Not so sure on Stoke this year, maybe Friend or Kone?

Any thoughts on Carroll instead of Gray -- he has been firing well in pre-season and reckon Ayew/Feghouli will only help. Gray has tough opening fixtures

            Appreciate the comments guys,

            on the defense:

Il have city, chel, utd, everton, and boro cover with most having assist potential, im liking that whilst still having premiuim strikers.

            On those premium mids:

            Ozil; wont start gw1
Mkhi & Martiial: have utd cover in ibra
            Firmino: Terrible first 4 fixtures
Mahrez: Have musa cover for hull game and hazard if he moves.

Payet : Really want him but might as well start from scrath if I squeeze another £9.5M into midfield.

feel free to pick apart my logic... but i still think im done

What do you think about this:

              Foster - Jaku
              Valencia - Friend - Evans - Kone - Amat
              Hazard - Tadic - Lamela - Ramirez - Capoue
              Aguero - Kane - Vardy

I'm tired of seeing Gray in every team, so I figured I'd go with big hitters up top. Has it left me too thin in defense and 4th mid?

Thanks. I try not to plan out too many transfers, but after Tadic's first three matches I envision downgrading him to the best 6.5 at the time (Deulofeu, Townsend, Mirallas, etc.) and upgrading two 4.5 defenders to Williams and Stones. We'll see.

we still think alike. it must be a geographical thing.

i sat down for the first time last night and decided to try to get last year's 3 top strikers
in my team and see what it looks like. i can't find the draft, but it was very similar to this one.
i think the midfield was identical. defense may have been a bit different, but not much.

i like it tons . . . but it scares me at the same time.

                here's what bothers me:

                A) i do not believe enough in Lamela. i know he was terrific late last season, and had had a whale
of a pre-season. but i can see Son getting some of his starts, and replacing him after 70 minutes in
others. also, Kane and Eriksen and Alli should get more points than him, so that leaves him 4th top
for Spurs, or maybe even lower. I really want Eriksen, but the extra 1.5 is a deal breaker with the
Kun-Vardy-Kane front lone. Plus, i really have a good feeling about Gray. and yes, i know it's crowded there.

                B) this defense could turn into a real scramble. i like Valencia over Shaw too, so i think that's ok. but when will Darmian show up? i love Friend, but now there's word that Fabio is coming from Cardiff. i would think he will be backup, but what if he pushes for the left-back spot? and then Kone may go to Everton. i think that will be ok too, as i have a feeling Koeman will play three at the back. but what if those 3 are Williams, Funes-Mori, and Jagielka? and word is that Amat will play, but will he really? what can you expect from a 4.0? and then there's Evans, the glass man.

                C) i have Jaku in all my teams, but why wouldn't Hull upgrade there this week or next?

i may have a similar team to this one, but i have a feeling my front line will be Kun-Vardy-Gray (or even Kun-
Ibra-Gray is i decide to be more conservative and stay with the crowd early on), which allows me to resolve many of the above worries.

it's many hours after you posted this. i hope you get my thoughts, as i would love to hear what you think about them.

This is great stuff. I've considered most of your concerns--and share many of them--but I'm starting to feel like just about any team I put together has me concerned.

I have to wrap up something for work this morning, but I'll respond in more detail later.

Thanks, again, for the thorough response. I was actually in Stone Harbor this past weekend and watched the Community Shield at 96th Street Bar & Grill.

My thinking for wanting three big hitters is twofold: I was getting tired of seeing every single team have Kun/Ibra/Gray, and I also wasn't liking any of the 6.5 forwards enough to undo my big hitters lineup.

That said, I'm wavering a bit (see below).

                  In response to your points:

                  A) I've actually been on Lamela since the end of last season. So, for me, it's not a bandwagon thing. His stats for the final three months of the season were nearly identical to Eriksen's and Alli's, and he pretty much started every match during that span. The only thing putting me off him is Champions League. I'm hoping Poch treats that like he did Europa, and he hands Son the starting spot in those matches, but I'm sure that's wishful thinking. Anyway, I'm in the camp of this being Lamela's breakout year.

                  B) I mostly agree about the defense. I do like both Shaw and Valencia, but I don't see why Valencia (with Darmian) is under any greater threat than Shaw (with Rojo). Maybe my thinking will change in the next two days. Likewise with Friend. I guess Fabio is a threat, but I just don't see Friend losing his spot. I'd actually prefer Kone go to Everton. I don't see them bidding $18m just to sit him. Amat I'm not really banking on (he's fodder...but with the other spots being shaky I could see where having a non-playing fifth defender is dicey). And I agree about Evans. He will either become Souare, or he'll become Williams by week four when I'll likely downgrade Tadic due to their crap run of fixtures at that point.

                  C) Again, this is probably shortsighted, but I'm not planning on playing Jaku at all. I like Foster's fixtures for the first seven weeks. The risk, of course, is Foster getting hurt...and then I'm either stuck with Jaku playing (which isn't good) or him being replaced (which is even less good).

Anyway, below are the two options I'm considering. Just an FYI: I'm not a fan of Gray at all. Maybe it's my Burnley blinders, but I don't think his style will translate well (I probably said that about Deeney too--look where that got me), and I don't see Burnley scoring enough goals for him to be reliable.

                  Foster - Jaku
                  Valencia - Kone - Friend - Amat - EVANS
                  Hazard - Tadic - Lamela - Capoue - RAMIREZ
                  Aguero - Kane - VARDY

                  or

                  Foster - Jaku
                  Valencia - Kone - Friend - Amat - WILLIAMS
                  Hazard - Tadic - Lamela - Capoue - FIRMINO
                  Aguero - Kane - CARROLL

I fully understand trying to get a 34.0 frontline together. I tried like crazy to put one together that I was happy with.

and I have no problem envisioning a Lamela breakout this year. It's probable. I just like both Eriksen and Alli more, and would rather ride one of them along with Kane. I am all for having 2 Spurs attackers.

I will probably have Amat in my team, and carrying a 4.0 on the backline I want 4 nailed defenders to go with him. i consider Valencia nailed. and Friend. I will add VVD, who may be a season keeper for me. I'd like Kone, but if there are questions going into the weekend I will find another nailed 4.5 instead.

                    I have Foster/Jaku too. I would prefer Foster/Heaton, if I can find the .5

Andre Gray will put the ball in the net at this level. i am convinced. i watched him play all last year. and i think Dyche is a fantasy player's dream manager. he will play the same lineup week in, week out if they are healthy. he does not muck about. Gray will play 90 minutes, every game, unless injured, period. i would love to add Michael Keane to my team too. my shoulders slumped when i saw he was 5.0 . . . i was hoping for 4.5. Burnley will keep cleans, and Keane is a big threat with his head on set plays.

of your 2 teams, i prefer the second by half an inch. Williams is an upgrade, and Firmino is a big upgrade. plus i'm a Hammers' fan, and like Big Andy. my fingers are crossed he stays injury-free. he is a beast.

here's what i'm up to -- i'm building my team from the frontline back. i'm starting with 4 options, and going from there:

                    A) Kun, Kane, Vardy
                    B) Kun, Kane, Gray
                    C) Kun, Vardy, Gray
                    D) Kun, Ibra, Gray

I look at D as the most conservative (which suits my nature) due to Zlatan's high ownership. I like B because Harry is the prime (c) candidate for week 2 in my mind, so i am leaning that way slightly at present. I think I have eliminated A. C is probably out to, because I want to (c) Harry next game.

I want Eriksen and Hazard. I love Firmino, and actually think he will do well the first 2 weeks, but 'pool's opening fixtures are rugged, so i think i'll get him later on when they turn. I think Tadic will be my third mid,
either Townsend or Ramirez my 4th. Capoue is a lock for 5th mid for me.

Just being able to upgrade Lamela (who I would have with the 3 big strikers) to Eriksen, and being able to add VVD (or Williams) over Evans to stabilize the backline makes it worth having Gray up front . . . or Callum Wilson, who i am also fond of.

Glad to have the PL back . . . I missed it.

reckon you can downgrade one of ibra or sanchez and upgrade a lot of other spots

            How about this?

Almost as funny as Jonny Evans to Arsenal instead of Ashley Williams. What a shambles!

Bony is funnier, I think. Evans is only funny cos he's so injure prone 😛

They could get Benteke for that. Similar style but a much better finisher

I've gone Gradel just because he has goalscoring pedigree in Ligue 1

No chance. Never scores, never assists and rarely plays. What a combination

feel like Eriksen + Kane is too much Tottenham but also don't feel safe on transferring them. contemplating Firmino + Kane or Eriksen + Ibra, but I srsly can't decide.
