It’s time for the first pre-Gameweek members article of the 2016/17 season as we check out the main captaincy contenders on offer. As usual, we analyse the Opta numbers and also check up on the Rate My Team ratings before offering up a couple of differential options in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

Not surprisingly, Sergio Aguero is the outright frontrunner for our Gameweek 1 Captain Poll, with over 55% of the votes cast ahead of City’s home encounter against Sunderland.

The Argentine netted 15 of his 24 goals at the Etihad last time around and faces a Black Cats backline that was breached more times on their travels than any other side in 2015/16.

Sunderland managed just two away clean sheets all season and given that Aguero has scored in both his pre-season matches, we can’t see the visitors spoiling Pep Guardiola’s first match in charge.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic takes the runners-up spot ahead of his Premier League debut for United. The second most popular player in Fantasy Premier League, he’s selected by 14% after notching twice over the recent pre-season matches, including a Community Shield winner against Leicester.

Having already clinched the first silverware of the season, United will roll up to Dean Court in confident mood. Bournemouth boasted the second-worst home defence in the league last year – only Villa conceded more – and managed just four clean sheets in front of their own fans.

Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez head the chasing pack behind the big Swede.

Selected by just 5% and 4% respectively for Leicester’s trip to crisis club Hull, the duo look very viable differentials this weekend – both bagged double-figure goal hauls on their travels last term, with 12 of Mahrez’ 17 strikes arriving on the road.

Further down, Eden Hazard (3%) and Burnley’s Andre Gray (2%) offer form alternatives for their home encounters against West Ham and Swansea.

Having scored nine times over the summer, the latter, in particular, could prove a very brave punt – the Swans conceded in all nine away fixtures under Francesco Guidolin in 2015/16 and are reeling from the departure of former skipper Ashley Williams.

    Better option?

That's a difficult call. I think Koeman will settle on Mori/Williams in back, Jags on the bench, unless he uses 3 defenders against stronger teams.

Either way you'll probably stash for GW1 vs. Spurs. Coinflip. I'd take Mori in case Williams has a setback getting fit.

OK deadzone. I tried and tried... I just can't improve. My objective is a conservative team that may WANT a couple of changes by GW2, but not NEED any changes.

Tell me why you think I should change anything here. Be more convincing than "fixtures bad" if you could.

    Friend - Fuchs - Ward
    Eriksen - Arnautovic - Townsend - Firmino
    Gray - Aguero - Vardy

      No Chelsea or ManU

      Coleman wasted on your bench.

      Not too sure about Arnie.

Pretty similar to my team but I think I will try to get Hazard in.

Coleman is injured and playing Spurs anyway. I could have Bisan Lauren and he'd be on my bench vs. Spurs. my others have better fixtures.

Arnie is a stallion, and my punt.

I'll buy hazard when I sell Vardy GW3/4ish

well apart from the bad fixtures for various players and the fact that palace can't defend for toffee and the fact that masuaku probably won't play much or at all and the fact that gray has never played against a decent defence (probably)...it looks a pretty tidy team to me

on first glance i do approve, on second glance i just know that you can save yourself some heartache with the arnie and townsend picks, however, it could very well work out, and if you like arnie then by all means go for it.
Defence and forward line is fine, stick with that.
Coleman is a slight doubt but you knew that anyway and he will come good i believe. There's not at all much wrong with it to be honest, all just comes down to preference on the arnie pick.
      It's solid overall 🙂

I'll rate yours if you rate mine (scroll up)

I love the differential GK, but those fixtures are rough. maybe you want save pts.

Solid defense, if a bit safe. That's how I like my GW1 side, too.

Mids: I'm not big on Tadic. I def don't like Routledge, but maybe you see an angle I don't? Swansea are a dumpster fire IMO! Love the hazard and Dele picks.

Front: I'll opt in on Ibra, but I'm not talking you out of that one I think.

If United do well, you'll do well.

Sure no probs and thank you for commenting.

Well, with the routledge pick, i had 0.5 left over, and have always liked Forster, clean sheets are something i feel slightly more comfortable with rather than racking up save points from a weaker side's keeper until one eventually goes past them, but i do see your point.

Tadic is purely a gut feeling, was always gutted when he was in the points last season haha.
As for Ibra yeah he's defo staying haha.
        I'll scroll up now 🙂

Repost with more info. I've set up a 5-4-1 that I really like. I've doubled down on all three of Chelsea, Man City and Man U in defence. I'm betting on them paying off over the season. The rest of my starters are Aguero, Sanchez, Hazard, Firmino and Deufoleu. The bench is fodder.

I'm considering dropping Hazard and a Man City defender for Oscar and Ali. Worth it in the long run?

This is what beer and late night tinkering does to me.

    I currently have Sterling.

If you've had enough beer to pick Sterling, your team may be a complete surprise in the morning morning :p

Pick one from each of the following two options:
Vardy or Kane? (will probably trade Vardy to Kane for GW2 onwards)
    Alli or Townsend?

    Rest of team:
    Foster (Jakupovic)
    Valencia Stones Friend (Evans Amat)
    Hazard Firmino Redmond **** (Capoue)
    Aguero Gray ****

Guys, which one do you prefer?

    a) Foster/Heaton

    Shaw/vanDijk/Mee(McAuley/Friend)

    Mkhitaryan/Ayew/Payet/Eriksen/Tadic

    Kane/Gray/Wilson

    b) Foster/Heaton

    Shaw/Stones/Mee (McAuley/Friend)

    Mkhitaryan/Payet/Tadic/Zaha/Capoue

    Aguero/Kane/Gray

    Btw, Stones or Morgan?

Feel free to leave your opinions guys!
