Jan Vertonghen recovers from injury in time for Spurs’ trip to Goodison. Laurent Koscielny is still unavailable for Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool. Ashley Williams misses out for the Toffees, who have worries at both ends of the pitch, whilst Southampton have defensive concerns as Watford roll up to St Mary’s.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche is optimistic that left-back Stephen Ward will shrug off a hamstring problem in time for the home clash against Swansea. Jon Flanagan has stepped up his fitness in training, whilst Ashley Barnes (hamstring) is expected to miss out.

Alan Pardew was somewhat reluctant to give away any information for Palace’s clash against West Brom. The Eagles boss conceded he’s still trying to get one or two players “up to full speed”.

Laurent Koscielny is “not ready” to return for Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool, according to Arsene Wenger.

Ashley Williams misses his debut for Everton due to a lack of match fitness, according to Ronald Koeman. Seamus Coleman and Romelu Lukaku are doubtful for the visit of Tottenham, though Phil Jagielka has been passed fit.

Claudio Ranieri has no injury concerns for Leicester’s trip to Hull, though the champions are without Robert Huth due to suspension. The Foxes manager has admitted he doesn’t expect his side to reach last year’s fitness levels “until the fifth or sixth game”.

Aitor Karanka has revealed that Bernardo Espinoza, Daniel Ayala and Grant Leadbitter will all miss Middlesbrough’s home encounter against Stoke.

Southampton pair Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares will have their fitness assessed after a late return to training due to their exertions for Portugal in Euro 2016. Ryan Bertrand misses out with a knee injury.

Glen Johnson is Stoke’s only injury worry for their trip to the Riverside. Marko Arnautovic is expected to feature after stepping up his recovery from a minor hamstring issue, whilst Xherdan Shaqiri is available, having shrugged off a knock.

Jermain Defoe has declared himself available for Sunderland’s trip to Man City. Jan Kirchhoff, Billy Jones and Seb Larsson all remain doubts.

Francesco Guidolin has admitted that Swansea’s record signing Borja Baston is unlikely to be involved in the weekend trip to Burnley.

Jan Vertonghen has recovered from the ankle injury that forced him to miss Euro 2016 and is available for Tottenham’s trip to Goodison. Mousa Dembele serves the third of a six-match suspension.

Brice Dja Djedje has been ruled out of Watford’s trip to St Mary’s, whilst fellow new boy Isaac Success is almost certainly unavailable, too. Midfield duo Valon Behrami and Adlene Guedioura are set to have their fitness assessed.

Gokhan Tore has resumed training ahead of West Ham’s trip to Chelsea on Monday evening. Diafra Sakho is still sidelined with a back problem, whilst Cheikhou Kouyate, Pedro Obiang and Darren Randolph have all recovered from knocks. Slaven Bilic has admitted Dimitri Payet isn’t fit to play 90 minutes, though the Frenchman is expected to play some part in the Stamford Bridge showdown.

Junior Stanislas has been ruled out of Bournemouth’s clash against United on Sunday. Eddie Howe has admitted he has “one or two niggles” to contend with in the squad.

Just another thought on Hazard... Are we honestly all that confident that he will suddenly regain his form of 2 years ago? Even if he did... he doesn't have pens, which made up a lot of his goals. Can't help but feel that forking out an extra 1m for Sanchez, who will probably be playing up front and consistently has the best stats of any mids, is more than worth it?

Am on Hazard, but having similar doubts. Is also renowned for starting seasons slow... but can't afford Sanchez atm. Until another premium mid clearly emerges (KDB, Sanchez) think Hazard is as good as any to stick with.

Same thoughts. He has been a lock in my draft team since the beginning... but his two good seasons in the league he got 14 goals each. I'd imagine 3-6 of those were penalties?

So he's never really been prolific. He solves the chelsea coverage issue so well though. I don't have rrom for a chelsea forward and in midfield you're left with Willian.. who is fairly 'meh'.

re-post, last one ended at bottom of the page.

Part of the article from outsideoftheboot. It may help you if you have have tough time choosing between Mkhitaryan and Martial or Shaw and Valencia.

Another aspect where the system differs is the very structured and traditional link-up in the wider areas of the creative third. The full-back link-up is most often restricted to involving the winger and fullback, which is unlike most modern systems, such as Pochettino’s, where the deep playmaker and attacking midfielder are more involved in the wide link-up. The approach keeps central positions more stable, and additionally allows the No.10 to take up attacking positions to supplement the Center Forward’s presence.

    Real Madrid 2011/12

The team set up with Xabi Alonso in the playmaking role and Sami Khedira placed slightly more defensively.

Alonso made 9 assists that season, and had competed more passes on average than any other player in the team, averaging over 80 passes per game (atleast 20 passes more than any other player).

Alonso also averaged the most number of long passes (9 per game).

Both Khedira and Alonso ended the season with considerably high pass completion rates (88%).

Together, the duo also contributed an average of 4.6 tackles per game, the same as that totaled by Ramos and Pepe.

    Chelsea 2014/15

Chelsea played most of the season with Matic and Fabregas filling the two midfield spots.

Fabregas made 18 assists in the season, completing an average of 80 passes per game (20 more passes per game than any other player on the pitch).

Fabregas averaged the most number of long passes in the team (5.5 per game).

Together, Matic and Fabregas made an average of 6 tackles per game, while John Terry and Cahill together averaged 2 tackles per game.

On both occasions, the midfield duos had phenomenal seasons and pivotal roles in their team’s success.

On a gross analysis of chance creation in Mourinho’s system over the years, the right side of attack seems more involved in delivering crosses to the attackers while the left side involves more link-up play and short-pass play around the edge of the box.

The inverted winger and left fullback often link up with the Center Forward and No.10 with shorter passes to create chances. On the other flank, the right full-back and winger pair up to get deliveries to the attackers. The approach recently saw success at Chelsea with Hazard/Fabregas on the left and Ivanovic/Willian on the right.

Redmond vs Tadic

Redmond - if he starts, he will be OOP. Puel's system doesn't ask for a winger so he will be played as one of two upfront, probably next to Long. Redmond has much more competition - particularly with a proven PL striker lurking on the sidelines, in Charlie Austin. He's more likely, thus, to get goals.

Tadic - has the set pieces that Redmond doesn't have (and is likely to be on pens once again) and is pretty assured of starting in the CAM position in Puel's diamond. Having just signed a new contract, he's clearly seen as Puel's architect and his performances are thought to be the reason Puel hasn't bought another creative midfielder. Set pieces and no. 10.

The broader picture - Saints have been solid in pre-season without dazzling. The defence looks pretty solid and will be enhanced by Fonte's return. But goals may be a concern. 7.5m is a lot to invest in a player from team that has EL pressures for the first time and hasn't experienced the investment seen at West Ham for example. If we struggle for goals in early fixtures, Puel may well spend cash on attackers - local journos understand him to have significant funds to improve the squad as he sees fit.

1.5m difference. This is where I struggle. I think Tadic's set pieces and nailed-onness is definitely worth extra investment. But I'm not convinced this amounts to 1.5m, when Redmond will play OOP. I'll let you decide 🙂

Thanks for the insight Lucy! Something I've been struggling with for the past couple of weeks.

I've been invested in Tadic since the end of last year, and I think I'm going to hold my nerve for now.

It's an easy downgrade to Redmond if that looks like the best move.

Holy crap, LUCY!! Blah blah blah, how was the wedding? How was the honeymoon? Is Shane Long nailed on?

Wedding was amazing. But it went crazy fast. I also got very drunk and poured Jaegerbombs down my dress. #classy

Honeymoon was BEAUTIFUL. But reality hurts.

Long isn't nailed but he's probably the most nailed of our strikers.

    Something a bit different....

My Girlfriend has a team made up of entirely Spanish speaking players, vs. my team of players eligible to play for African Nations (by virtue of African parents in some cases - took a bit of wiki research and failed on 2nd keeper...).

    Who will come out top?

Who would you change? (Note - Brazilians speak Portuguese, and just having played in Spain does not qualify you!)

    'Diego Someone'

    De Gea / Adrian
Valencia / Funes Mori / Azpi (Fernandez / Amat)
Sanchez / Bojan / Lamela / Deulofeu (Montero)
    Costa / Aguero (c) / Hernandez

    1.0 itb

(Best options: GK: Robles, Romero, Speroni. DEF: Zabaleta, Moreno, Paredes, Hernandez, Barragan, Bellerin, Monreal, Otamendi, Rojo, Britos. MID: Mata, Fab, Silva, Navas, Herrera, Ramirez, Yacob, Cazorla, Cuadrado, Obiang, Nolito, Romeu. FOR: Rondon, Ulloa, Joselu, Valencia, Negredo, Llorente - waiting for Calleri and Borja to be added)

    VS

    'Kalakuta Republic'

    Mandanda / 4.0
Bailly / Sagna / Nsue (Ogbonna / Kone)
    Mane / Ayew / Mahrez (c) / Alli (Gradel)
    Lukaku / Musa / Ighalo

    1.5 itb

(Best options: DEF: Matip, Kabasele, Ake, Kompany, Zouma, Nyom, Sakho etc. MID: Yaya, Kouyate, Feghouli, Bolasie, Zaha, Ibe, Leko, Elmohamady, Moses, Iwobi, Khazri, Adomah, Success, Wanyama etc. FOR: Origi, Afobe, Barrow, Batshuayi, Diomande, Benteke, Diouf, Bony, Iheanacho). Looking for a Lukaku replacement for GW1. Desperately hoping for nice transfers for Benteke and Bony.

Also, anybody interested in a second team 'theme team' mini league? Suggestions: Brits, U-21, Reds, Veterans (over 30), French Speakers (inc Belgium and some Africans), South Americans?
