In one of the more surprising moves of deadline day, Chelsea re-signed Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £34 million.

The 29-year-old Brazilian international penned a three-year contract with the Blues, and speaking about his return to west London, revealed his delight at being given the opportunity to win further silverware with the club:

“I’m here because I have ambition to play for a big club and when you play for a big club you need to think about winning every single match… I am very happy to be here again. It is fantastic to have a second opportunity to play for this club, I love this club, that’s why I’m here. Let’s try to continue the nice history with a lot of joy and try to get success.

The History

Luiz began his youth career at Sao Paulo in his native Brazil, before joining Vitoria at the age of 14. It was there where he was afforded his professional debut in 2006 and, after making 26 appearances, scoring one goal, he signed on loan for Benfica in January 2007.

Luiz played 10 league matches during the second half of the 2006/07 season, and impressed enough to earn a permanent move ahead of the 2007/08 campaign.

The Brazilian struggled to gain a regular starting berth during his first two full seasons with the Portuguese giants, with his big breakthrough campaign coming in 2009/10.

Luiz’ stock continued to rise at the beginning of the 2011/12 season, and having played 130 matches in all competitions for Benfica, scoring six goals and registering nine assists, the defender joined Chelsea in January 2011 for €25 million.

The defender took little time to settle at Stamford Bridge and, during the 2011/12 season, played a crucial role in the club winning the Champions League for the first time.

Following Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea in the summer of 2013, Luiz found himself falling down the pecking order, and after making 142 appearances in all competitions over a three-and-a-half year spell, scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists, he was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for around £50 million.

Over the past two seasons, Luiz has been an integral part of PSG’s success in Ligue 1, picking up two consecutive winners medals, and playing 89 matches in total, which yielded eight goals and four assists.

After playing twice for Brazil at Under 20 level, Luiz made his senior debut in a 2-0 win over the United States in August 2010. He currently has 55 caps to his name, with three goals and three assists, although he has recently been out of favour.

The Prospects

Having been linked with the likes of Juventus pair Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini in addition to Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly Luiz’ return has raised more than a few eyebrows.

With the ageing John Terry nearing the end of his career, it was a position where the new Chelsea boss had clearly pinpointed as an area which needed strengthening, although with no European matches to contend with this season, the need for depth in the position is not perhaps as great as it would normally be.

Although Conte preferred a three-man backline during his time in charge for Juventus and Italy, the Blues have started the season well operating with a 4-1-4-1 formation. The addition of Luiz certainly brings about the possibility of using a three-man defence, as does the signing of Marcos Alonso, who is comfortable playing as a full-back, wing-back or central defender in a back-three, but it remains to be seen whether that’s something Conte will look to change.

Conte’s arrival at Stamford Bridge has resulted in Chelsea conceding fewer shots in the box (11) than any other side during the opening three Gameweeks though. While that may be in part due to the quality of opposition the Blues have faced so far, the early evidence suggests the Italian will oversee one of the stronger defences in the Premier League this season.

It’s also not clear if Luiz will immediately jump ahead of either Terry or Gary Cahill in the pecking order, leaving Fantasy managers with plenty of uncertainty in regards to the exact make up of the Chelsea defence, with Branislav Ivanovic also able to play at centre-back should Conte look to start Alonso at left-back and Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back. There’s also Kurt Zouma to consider once he’s back from injury, though the acqusition of Luiz and Alonso doesn’t bode well for the youngster’s likelihood of starts.

Looking at last season’s underlying statistics, Luiz averaged a clearance every 27.8 minutes, inferior to both Cahill (18) and Terry (22.6), although he did lead the way in terms of interceptions, managing one every 34.8 minutes, considerably better than Terry (53.9) and Cahill (56.4).

All three players have historically offered a decent goal threat, with Luiz averaging a shot every 139.2 minutes last term, slightly better than Cahill (160.4) and in particular Terry (210.1).

The statistics suggest there’s little to split the trio, though, both in terms of CBI and potential goal threat, so it’s interesting to see that Luiz has been handed a price tag of 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same as Cahill, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic and Alonso, with Terry cheaper at 5.5.

The problem for FPL bosses is that there is too much uncertainty over who will be the regular starters, and whether Conte will consider using a three-man backline.

With a tough upcoming schedule (swa, LIV, ars, hul, LEI, MUN), it certainly appears best to stay away from the Chelsea defence for the time being, allowing us to sit back and ascertain their most secure defensive options ahead of a kind scheduel from Gameweek 15 onwards.

      All of them.

Strange but true...If Defoe scores at the weekend (which he will) and Kane blanks at the weekend (which he will) Defoe will be the second highest scoring striker in the prem for 2016 (calander year) behind Aguero...

And still we don't pick him.

We don't think twice about spending an extra few million on a mid/striker but god forbid anyone consider a 6.5 defender with great CS prospects having multiple attempts on goal per game

He's not a differential amongst casuals, but is amongst more seasoned players. Could easily have had 3 headed goals already this year; missed some pretty standard chances.

Looking at the stats tables and noticed that some teams have conceded more goals than big chances. Is the definition of a big chance really "a big chance that didn't result in a goal"?

Big Chance = A situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score usually in a one-on-one scenario or from very close range

Thanks. I saw that definition on Opta's blog. So Chelsea this season have conceded 1 big chance and 2 goals. Does that mean only one of the goals came from a big chance (one-on-one scenario or from very close range) or that they really conceded 3 big chances?

You can obviously work out which game had the big chance. Collins goal was pretty lucky etc.

They didn't concede 3 big chances, teams can concede goals that aren't from a 'big chance' you know. E.g. Collins jammy goal GW1 out of nowhere, Capoue stunner out of nowhere GW2. They were not big chances.

Some goals have an element of luck about them (probably much higher than we think) and some goals are scored from nothing (so to speak)

A big chance is when they are expected to score/concede depending on which view you are taking.

        Player Prices

Player prices change during the season dependent on the popularity of the player in the transfer market. Player prices do not change until the season starts.

The price shown on your transfers page is a player's selling price. This selling price may be less than the player's current purchase price as a sell-on fee of 50% (rounded up to the nearest £0.1m) will be applied on any profits made on that player.

For example, if you buy a player for £8.3m and when you transfer him his price is £9.0m, his selling price will be £8.6m.

It's just a play around with a 4-3-3 for WC Parm. Tempted to go with that formation. This is how the team would be:

          Heaton
          Walker - Baines - Bellerin - Valencia
          Sanchez - Hazard - Antonio
          Benteke - Defoe - Ibra

I like the intent but I think a stronger 4th midfielder would give you more flexibility, as good as those four defenders are there will be occasions where you'll want to bench them.

I do agree, but i'm thinking of just playing a 4-3-3 for a large duration, at least until the next WC comes along, just finding it so hard to decide on that 4th mid for when Aguero comes back, and can\t fit both aguero and Ibra in and have a decent midfield. i'd be happy playing Capue some games for his easier fixtures should i ever want to bench a defender, soes this sound like a no go area all together or something taht could work ya reckon?

It could work, especially given the current crop of form players but once that cheap midfielder emerges I think you'll end up crawling back to a 3-4-3.

that's true, it could be done i suppose with a simple downgrade from one of the defenders with a couple of free transfers, i may just take the gamble going this way.

                    I say go for it.

Bellerín, Baines and Højbjerg -> Koscielny, Williams and Snodgrass/King/Ramírez/Januzaj gives you a similar effect but with more security.

Wow, great team. You may get talked out of it here though.

Getting a decent 3-4-3 is hard, too hard atm. I've seen some very good ones but not with the sort of compromises I'd fancy. Sacrificing the 7th attacker for a better attacking 6 and 11 overall seems smart to me as things stand.

Cheers Ser, must admit i do like it, i had even thought about starting this season with a 4-3-3 but ended up going 3-4-3.
it really is proving difficult this season with the 3-4-3 though, price brackets etc, playing the heavy defender line seems to take some pressure off that whole conundrum, and the 3rd midfielder can be chopped and changed to practically anyone provided i did sanchez to ozil which i may well have to do once aguero comes back, plus sacrifices have to be made, and i think ibra will be getting the chop for aguero.

I empathise, I really do (see my previous comments, particularly about factors).

Atm I have a very similar draft but with Ozil and Sterling over Benteke and Defoe.

This isn't forever, we know that. As we have more clarity I'm sure 3-4-3 will come to the fore.

3-5-2 worked an absolute treat this time last season and starting with a heavy defence was a major boost a few years back.

Cool, i'll check out the comments.

I was all for sterling and have had him in my team for over a week now, but would only be for two games and i dont bank on him doing anything against united, so that leaves one game i'd have him for.

I do agree 3-4-3 will probably work out best once the cheap mid comes to the fore, like i say above though that can be catered for with a downgrade from the back line, could work.

I see quite many teams want Benteke too. Scott Dann is enough right?

      GW3 performance (small sample only)

      Shots inside the box
      Benteke 3
      Dann 4

      Shots on Target
      Benteke 0
      Dann 2

Dann also have potential clean sheet point.

Almost always better to wait on transfers especially in an international week! A 0.1 rise/fall is usually less important than the potential of an injury (or suspension in this case) and no FT left to fix it

Not Feghouli. Too risky. Prefer Valencia/Shaw to Bailly for attacking prospects even if there's some chance they won't play v City (probably not a CS game anyway)

Januzaj over Feghouli simply because he's nailed. Feghouli probably won't start.

Valencia over Bailly because of his attacking threat, though Bailly looks a BAPS beast. Valencia is one also, though.

Interesting hadn't heard that! I'd still consider Valencia since defence is more about the long term. This Man City game probably won't yield a clean sheet anyway but for future games Valencia will be a better pick than Bailly. Up to you though Bailly does look like a baps beast.

4 points are hard to come by but so easy to burn when you "need" to get that player in instead of waiting one week and having him for free... Isn't this the Stanford experiment?

There seems to be a surprising degree of consensus around here that transferring out Aguero is even Worth the hassle. Are we sure about this? We know we are using two transfers to both lose him and get him back. Could always play someone like Capoue or an extra defender for two weeks. Are the alternatives really that appealing?

I'm talking here of non-WCers of course

I am lucky to not have any pressing transfers to do and in that case you're also looking at "gaining tv" if he drops below 13m. It's a lot of your teams value sitting on your bench for 2 games imo.
