In one of the more surprising moves of deadline day, Chelsea re-signed Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £34 million.

The 29-year-old Brazilian international penned a three-year contract with the Blues, and speaking about his return to west London, revealed his delight at being given the opportunity to win further silverware with the club:

“I’m here because I have ambition to play for a big club and when you play for a big club you need to think about winning every single match… I am very happy to be here again. It is fantastic to have a second opportunity to play for this club, I love this club, that’s why I’m here. Let’s try to continue the nice history with a lot of joy and try to get success.

The History

Luiz began his youth career at Sao Paulo in his native Brazil, before joining Vitoria at the age of 14. It was there where he was afforded his professional debut in 2006 and, after making 26 appearances, scoring one goal, he signed on loan for Benfica in January 2007.

Luiz played 10 league matches during the second half of the 2006/07 season, and impressed enough to earn a permanent move ahead of the 2007/08 campaign.

The Brazilian struggled to gain a regular starting berth during his first two full seasons with the Portuguese giants, with his big breakthrough campaign coming in 2009/10.

Luiz’ stock continued to rise at the beginning of the 2011/12 season, and having played 130 matches in all competitions for Benfica, scoring six goals and registering nine assists, the defender joined Chelsea in January 2011 for €25 million.

The defender took little time to settle at Stamford Bridge and, during the 2011/12 season, played a crucial role in the club winning the Champions League for the first time.

Following Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea in the summer of 2013, Luiz found himself falling down the pecking order, and after making 142 appearances in all competitions over a three-and-a-half year spell, scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists, he was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for around £50 million.

Over the past two seasons, Luiz has been an integral part of PSG’s success in Ligue 1, picking up two consecutive winners medals, and playing 89 matches in total, which yielded eight goals and four assists.

After playing twice for Brazil at Under 20 level, Luiz made his senior debut in a 2-0 win over the United States in August 2010. He currently has 55 caps to his name, with three goals and three assists, although he has recently been out of favour.

The Prospects

Having been linked with the likes of Juventus pair Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini in addition to Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly Luiz’ return has raised more than a few eyebrows.

With the ageing John Terry nearing the end of his career, it was a position where the new Chelsea boss had clearly pinpointed as an area which needed strengthening, although with no European matches to contend with this season, the need for depth in the position is not perhaps as great as it would normally be.

Although Conte preferred a three-man backline during his time in charge for Juventus and Italy, the Blues have started the season well operating with a 4-1-4-1 formation. The addition of Luiz certainly brings about the possibility of using a three-man defence, as does the signing of Marcos Alonso, who is comfortable playing as a full-back, wing-back or central defender in a back-three, but it remains to be seen whether that’s something Conte will look to change.

Conte’s arrival at Stamford Bridge has resulted in Chelsea conceding fewer shots in the box (11) than any other side during the opening three Gameweeks though. While that may be in part due to the quality of opposition the Blues have faced so far, the early evidence suggests the Italian will oversee one of the stronger defences in the Premier League this season.

It’s also not clear if Luiz will immediately jump ahead of either Terry or Gary Cahill in the pecking order, leaving Fantasy managers with plenty of uncertainty in regards to the exact make up of the Chelsea defence, with Branislav Ivanovic also able to play at centre-back should Conte look to start Alonso at left-back and Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back. There’s also Kurt Zouma to consider once he’s back from injury, though the acqusition of Luiz and Alonso doesn’t bode well for the youngster’s likelihood of starts.

Looking at last season’s underlying statistics, Luiz averaged a clearance every 27.8 minutes, inferior to both Cahill (18) and Terry (22.6), although he did lead the way in terms of interceptions, managing one every 34.8 minutes, considerably better than Terry (53.9) and Cahill (56.4).

All three players have historically offered a decent goal threat, with Luiz averaging a shot every 139.2 minutes last term, slightly better than Cahill (160.4) and in particular Terry (210.1).

The statistics suggest there’s little to split the trio, though, both in terms of CBI and potential goal threat, so it’s interesting to see that Luiz has been handed a price tag of 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same as Cahill, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic and Alonso, with Terry cheaper at 5.5.

The problem for FPL bosses is that there is too much uncertainty over who will be the regular starters, and whether Conte will consider using a three-man backline.

With a tough upcoming schedule (swa, LIV, ars, hul, LEI, MUN), it certainly appears best to stay away from the Chelsea defence for the time being, allowing us to sit back and ascertain their most secure defensive options ahead of a kind scheduel from Gameweek 15 onwards.

This Aguero situation is fascinating, you think about keeping him on the bench for a couple of weeks but the idea of losing ground is too much and sway towards selling with a potential price drop in mind whether using wildcard or not. Buying him back also has to be at the forefront of plans so with that in mind I have a free transfer and my wildcard available, I want to keep my wildcard as long as possible and if I don't use it this will be my squad for the time Aguero is out:

    De Gea Heaton
    Valencia Terry Baines Evans Amat
Hazard Eriksen Tadic Bojan J King
    Lukaku Rondon Llorente

    Or wildcard to this:

    Cech Pickford
    Koscielny Valencia Baines Kaboul Amat
Sanchez Hazard Firmino Bojan J King
    Lukaku Rondon Benteke

Wildcard would mean 8 transfers so it's sort of in between as I'm definitely happy with half my squad for the long-term and can get by with a few others. It's only 1-2 I desperately want out and the need to get Sanchez in. Problem is I would have to lose him or Hazard for an Aguero return and do that change without a wildcard.

    Thoughts please?

Your wildcard team has Kaboul, Bojan and Rondon in it. I don't think that's the best use of funds.
To answer your question I would be tempted to wildcard your current team.

I think im going to go with this midfield in 2 wks time

    Haz Mane Chadli Bolasie Kenedy

Right now I have Sterling/Lamela instead of Chad/Ken for their next few fixtures

    Good plan or not ?

Also what do I do with Stones do I get Valencia even with bad fixtures or get Janmaat with his nice fixtures then get Valencia later ?

What about Foster + Heaton to Cech + Pickford and Koscielny + Mee to Evans and Amat

This way you can get Lukaku + Bony + Lamela/Antonio no?

Nevertheless, your defence is just too pricy, no point in investing 9.0 in Mee + Robertson if you ever never going to play them

    A) Antonio or B) Lamela

    1) Lukaku or 2) Costa

Thats the thing I actually think he's better coming from behind the play and making late runs into the box from rb then when hes on the wing

Players returning could mean he gets put in different position wouldnt be surprised if he gets pushed into midfield

It seems the benefits of a later WC aren't being given enough merit over the break.

Considering many only really have 2-3 players that need shifting, and that can be done through a -4 hit.

I will be transferring out Aguero + Gray > anyone + anyone and have a fairly strong 11 this coming week.

I'll also be able to see:
    1) more time to decide on Arsenal assets (Giroud, Perez, Caz's nailedness, some more of Ozil)
    2) We really don't know how to predict Benteke and Bony's success without first seeing how they mesh in their new teams
    3) West Ham's options need some more time on our eyes, I think namely how Payet fairs in value compared to Antonio.
    4) A Kane or Vardy revival could be on the cards, maybe a thing to keep in mind and look out for.
    5) An effortless Aguero in come GW6 with a WC

What're your thoughts? Do some feel pressured into the WC, but faced with the same minor issues in a different year or at a different point in the season, would've settled for -4 hit or slightly less ideal XI to give time for the above?

    1. Sharpe Shuffle
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

I'm holding. The people playing their wildcard are more vocal, that's all. It's burning a hole in their pockets. If your team can be fixed with a -4, just hold it

To be honest I was going to WC anyway because I'm not happy with my midfield (Mahrez - Firmino - Redmond - Lamela) and want to get Hazard and some Arsenal in there.

Aguero's ban and Gray's possible ban is just a bonus that will make room for temporary Sanchez and hopefully a couple of otherwise unexpected price rises.

More a case of WCers using Aguero ban as validation for a WC after an average start

Sanchez normally scores in clusters, will probably get a brace this week, hatrick next, few price rises and then a load of blanks for the GW6 wildcards.

Anyone know roughly how long it takes the 'squad value' and 'in the bank' section to update:

    Squad value: £0.00
    In the bank: £0.00

Does team value still update throughout the week when one has wildcarded?

In my opinion, Dele Alli made a big impact when he came on and played in the No. 10 role.

Rooney undoubtedly has class but, if there's uncertainty now, how will he be performing in 2018 when the World Cup is here?

Time to move on. Breed the younger players in to the team now, give them the chance to gain more experience. Maybe we'll have a better chance in two years.

Oh and get rid of Henderson.

      Agree/disagree anyone?

The restriction Giroud creates for Alexis Sanchez is MASSIVELY overstated AND it ignores that not only was Cazorla out most of last season, but that they also have Xhaka who is a huge improvement on Coquelin.

Take a look at Alexis' goals:shots in the box ratio and his assists:chances created ratio. Part of the story says that he wasn't totally keyed in but was getting tons of chances, part of the story says his teammates weren't finishing what they should.

subjectively I think it's overstated because he still got the chances, he just didn't capitalize. as far as the rest, take a look at first half v second half of last season for him in the comparison tool and look at his shots in the box/on target and his goals and similarly his chances created/assists. looks like he was a touch unfocused but that Arsenal also just didn't perform

Not only that but I have always thought that Sanchez was one of those players that play better in the warm weather and not so well in the cold winter. Maybe being a South American, the cold weather ruins his game in a way. I cannot prove such a thing but it something I have noticed with him and some other South Americans playing in Europe generally.

Just had a very quick look into this, possibly some substance to it.

Whilst it's previously been noted that Sanchez performs in 'streaks' or 'clusters', the timing of his goals during the season seems to concur with your point to a degree.

A quick image of when he scored last season in the league:
        https://postimg.org/image/bu20pxv95/c9ce4da0/

He started his first streak in September last year. Getting him in asap! 😉

Disclaimer: There are obviously many more variables.

Those hoping to profit from price rises/falls by playing wildcard over the international break, do you expect there's more money to be made because of the 2 week gap? If so, why? Non-wildcarders still only have 1FT per week regardless

It would be interesting to see after the next GW starts if there really were more price changes than normal over the break or if this effect is more imagined than real. Anyone got any data on this from previous seasons?

Transfers can be made during the 2 week gap which count towards price rise/falls.

A manager can then activate their wildcard at the end of the 2 weeks, therefore cancelling all point hits/deductions. This way the transfers still count towards rise/falls though, I believe.

Not a lot of .2 rises but a lot of .1 that will get another .1 next week. Very hard to gain actual .1 selling price increase to plow back into final WC team. Most increasing by .2 you probably want anyway.

Hi guys, need help with a decision...

    Current Team (0.7 in bank):

    Heaton - Forster
Baines - van Dijk - Dann - McAuley - Stones
    Alli - Barkley - Tadic - Eriksen - Townsend
    Gray - Aguero - Borini

    Possible Changes to make:
    A) Sanchez and Lukaku for Tadic and Aguero
    B) Lukaku and Benteke for Aguero and Borini
    C) Sanchez and Lukaku and Benteke for Tadic and Aguero and Borini (Take a hit)
    D) Any other better choice?

I'd say so, simply because he's injured. If you want to invest the Aguero money in midfield though, go for it. Your current midfield has a lot of issues (4/5 are out of form) so you may want to just play the wildcard to sort it out

That team badly needs a wildcard.
You are wasting 1 mil on Forster.
You have no Utd coverage at the back.
Your midfield bar Barkley are all currently misfiring, although tadic and eriksen will come good. Alli should absolutely be removed as soon as possible.
You can't really afford to ignore hazard or ozil/sanchez at the moment.
2 of your forwards are unavailable and Gray may soon also be getting a ban.
      Wildcard this 100%

    Wildcarded

    Heaton-Pickford
    Valencia-Shaw-McAuley-Friend-Amat
    Hazard-Ozil-Sterling-Lamela-Hojbjerg
    Ibra-Costa-Defoe

Undecided on best 4.5 option, have Friend at the moment but other opinions could be useful.
I realise I'm missing Everton coverage but I can't stand the inconsistency of Barkley and Lukaku.

Either take a hit to reinvest the Aguero cash now or leave it ITB to get him straight back. If you wait a week to get Ozil/Sanchez, you'll use next week's FT and will need a hit to get Kun back anyway

Jakupovic - under threat from David Marshall.

Amat - possibly under threat, poor performances.

keep. i feel like mane is fixture proof, the man can score on any team on any given day, creative and lighting pace and good finisher (better than coutinho imo lol but coutinho is a hog and shoots long range heaps so theres always a chance he knocks one in). this pretty much sums up liverpool tho tbh lol. only risk is consistency, any of the front 3 could go off, but i feel like mane is the most dangerous goal wise and creating chances. he couldve had 2 assist against spurs if coutinho finished better.

if you need to free up some money, i feel like dropping down to firmino (.05) is better than dropping to coutinho.

      my 2c.
