Leicester’s summer recruitment drive came to its conclusion on Wednesday evening with the club-recordsigning of Sporting Lisbon forward Islam Slimani. The 28-year-old arrives for an undisclosed fee believed to be worth up to £29 million.

Slimani put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Foxes and, speaking to the club’s official website, explained how he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to link up with compatriot Riyad Mahrez:

“I’ve always wanted to play my football in the Premier League and to get the opportunity to do that with the reigning champions was something I simply could not turn down… My friend Riyad Mahrez spoke to me about the Club and about the atmosphere the Leicester fans create at King Power Stadium. I will give absolutely everything I have on the pitch for them and for my team-mates and I hope that together we can achieve something special.”

The History

Slimani’s career began in his homeland at JSM Cheraga, scoring 21 goals in 22 matches in 2008/09, before he joined another Algerian side, CR Belouizdad in May 2009.

Over the next four seasons, Slimani’s development continued at a steady pace, scoring 32 goals in 96 appearances, before securing a move to Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in August 2013.

He wasn’t a regular starter during the first few months at the club, but, by the end of the 2013/14 season, had forced his way into the starting XI, and ended the campaign with a reasonable eight goals and four assists from 26 league outings.

Slimani entered 2014/15 as the main man in attack for Sporting, and improved his goal output, netting 12 times in 21 league matches, and adding four assists. He also scored twice in six Champions League appearances.

It was only last season when Slimani emerged as a prolific goalscorer, though, scoring 27 goals in 33 league matches, while also totalling six assists.

Slimani made his international debut in a 3-0 win over Niger in May 2012, and has an impressive goal scoring record for his country, netting 23 times in 43 matches, including two goals at the 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

With the additions of Ahmed Musa and Slimani this summer, Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri looks to have bought players to help ease the burden on Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, who scored a combined 41 of the Foxes 68 goals in the Premier League last season.

While that will undoubtedly help Leicester in their quest to challenge on multiple fronts, the issue from a Fantasy perspective is that we can expect to see plenty of rotation, with Ranieri this season likely to live up to his “Tinkerman” tag.

Given the significant outlay on Slimani, the Algerian will expect to play a prominent role, so it could be that Ranieri looks to operate with 4-4-2 more often this season, partnering Slimani and Vardy up front.

That would appear to make sense on paper at least. Standing at 6ft 2in tall, the Algerian isn’t the quickest and is more of a natural target man who can hold the ball up due to his strength. Crucially, he also possesses the high work-rate required from Ranieri’s charges.

Vardy could play off his strike partner, getting on the end of knock-downs with his electric pace, and making runs in behind the opposition defence.

Shinji Okazaki’s vital contribution to Leicester’s success last season can’t be forgotten, while the increase in central options could see Musa earn more pitch time on the flank at the expense of Marc Albrighton.

Vardy will surely remain the first choice striker, then, but the signing of Slimani could allow Ranieri to manage the England international’s minutes around Champions League matches.

Interestingly, Slimani has been priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 1.4 less than Vardy at 9.9, with Mahrez the other standout option among the Leicester attack available at 9.5.

With so many premium options in good form to start the season, and with Leicester’s fixture list (liv, BUR, mun, SOT, che, CPL, tot) pretty tough over the coming period, it’s unlikely many Fantasy managers will be prioritising a Foxes attacker at this point of the season.

In reality, that schedule, combined with the Champions League campaign getting under way later this month, should hand us the ideal opportunity to get an idea of Ranieri’s favoured tactics and personnel.

At present, there looks to be too much uncertainty surrounding Slimani, with the Algerian also expected to need time to settle into his new surroundings.

Vardy and Mahrez look to remain the key attacking targets at the King Power Stadium, then, with the issue of penalty duties likely to decide which is the superior option. After Mahrez failed to convert from the spot against Swansea last time out, his third miss from his last four penalties, it may be that Vardy takes Leicester’s next spot-kick.

So while Slimani’s arrival will hand Ranieri a different option in attack, the Algeria international may not feature on our radars too prominently during the opening months of his Leicester career.

    Thoughts on this WC team:
    Heaton
    Evans Valencia Baines
    Sanchez Sterling Hazard Barkley Antonio
    Benteke Ibra

And yes there is a plan to bring Aguero back in for GW6

Thanks. Subs: Robinson (in case for some reason Heatpn doesn't play) Amat, Diomande, Love - realise he doesn't play but is third sub and 4mil so can use cash elsewhere.

No would still keep ibra. Would save 2 free transfers for GW6 then swap Sanchez to Ozil, Barkley to Capoue and Baines to a cheaper defender.

I see what you're saying. But surely best starting with Williams instead of Baines. Saves you a hit

Would need to go down to a 4.5mil defender unfortunately so would still have to remove Williams.

Back up plan would be keep Monitor Utds midfield performers and swap Aguero for Ibra then a midfielder for a performing Utd midfielder. In my opinion though it's worth having Ibra and Aguero long term

Most of us have avoided Pogba due to an "on paper" withdrawn position....even though he still looks quite good.

What "on paper" position did he play for France for that last game?

    Would like different opinions

    A - Antonio + Evans*

    B - Bolasie + van Aanholt

*Evans would be a WBA double up with Foster and would play every game
Though I could just replace my 4.5m with a Watford defender to come in only for the really hard fixtures

Repost. Would appreciate a response, perhaps from someone I responded to?

Could I have a WC opinion guys? -
    Pickford, Foster
    Morgan, Mee, Amat, Shaw, Williams
    Barkley, Hazard, Antonio, Sanchez, Sterling
    Ibra, Benteke and Diomande.

When Aguero is back I will do Ibra for Aguero and bring in a cheaper mid option for Sanchez (Ozil), Hazard (Firmino) or Sterling/Barkley (Bolasie/Redmond).

      I personally prefer 3-4-3 over 3-5-2.

I might change to a 433 at somepoint in the future when I know how Benteke, Bony and Remy are doing. But at the moment I prefer the form and fixtures of Barkley and Antonio and sideways midfield transfers when I want to amend (Esp the Liverpool options).

Basically Mee and Morgan are to be rotated, with Mee swapped for Pieters in five weeks.

That gives me the following rotation:

        Hull (H), Burnley (H), Watford (H) Southampton (H) Sun (H) CPL (H), SWA (H) WBA (H), Bou (H), Mid (H), Burnley (H).

I dont have Lukaku and not planning on getting him but he is hardly anti FPL points. When he is in form he is good. He has just not been in form for some time.

Had him for first 3 GWs and he ticked over nicely 5,5,5. But he was a hairs breath away from getting sent off twice so thats why hes not in my WC team. Bless him.

Hazard fixtures regress after Swansea. If he's still on form will you keep him after that game or switch to another form player with fixtures?

I was planning to swap at the start of the season but he looks so good. I think he is back tbh, and near undroppable.

I think Hazard, Sanchez, and Aguero will be the best points scorers in the game.

WC team looking like this, subject to change:

          Foster, Pickford
          Valencia, Baines, Evans, Collins*, Amat
          Sanchez, Hazard, Lamela, Antonio
          Aguero, Lukaku, Benteke

          What do you think?

The main sticking points are Sanchez&Lamela ---> Ozil&Sterling?

And the James Collins spot. Might ditch him as he's not nailed, but those fixtures...

Those without Ibra, have you considered Rooney as an alternative?

Production in every game thus far, will potentially take some penalties this season, and rather promising shooting stats.

Every game I watch I'm unimpressed with him, but he's looking a decent fantasy asset.

I pushed him all summer. It's impossible for a player like him to play alongside Ibra and not get good pts.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

          Different Wildcard/coping without Aguero ideas

For those wildcarding/or using two or more transfers to deal with Aguero's absence are you considering a different approach?

          Firstly, what is the norm/template?

This is to move some of the Aguero money into midfield with an ideal of drafting back the Man City man in GWK 6/7.

So that gives a template of something like this

          Hazard - Ozil/Sanchez - Antonio/Barkley - Sterling - Capoue
Costa/Lukaku - Ibrahimovic - Negredo (for those that don't look at underlying stats)/Benteke/Bony

          So what are the alternatives?

4-4-2 - Looking at Everton is Baines a good option instead of Lukaku/barkley? - with attacking and defensive points available. Investing in him and a cheap striker means you can divert even more money into midfield. Or ensure you have money in the bank for Aguero and afford Hazard/Sanchez/Costa and Ibrahimovic without any worry.

With West Ham and West Brom having good fixtures arguably 4-4-2 could be the way to go while Aguero is away.

Puncheon - ok, this may sound a bit odd, but Puncheon has been racking up a few chances over the last few weeks and presents a cut price Palace alternative to Benteke. Upgrading Capoue to him could present the chance to go for a 3-5-2.

What other 'different' or alternative wildcard plans/coping without Aguero plans are you considering?

The high ownership of Kante and the continued drafting in of Negredo I think proves that perhaps there are a few more casuals out there than some people thought. 😉

Ditching both of Aguero and Ibra and going with a Lukaku Benteke Bony front line with Sanchez Hazard Pogba Fixtures (Bolasie) in midfield.

I'll struggle but I want a different sort of team to my two rivals.....I see no point playing with too similar teams.

Some of my very favourite players in that line up though so I win without a ball being kicked.

I'm going with the ultimate alternative wildcard strategy. Getting rid of Aguero, wildcarding in GW8 and not bringing him back.

I have this alternate WC draft atm, planning a 3-5-2.

            Heaton (Pickford)

Valencia Masuaku Williams van Aanholt (Amat)

            Sanchez Hazard Nolito Bolasie Antonio

            Benteke Ibrahimovic (Barrow)

Could even line up 4-4-2 depending upon fixtures.

I'm looking at 3-5-2 with a swap to a future 3-4-3 if the new striking options perform.

I like the 3-5-2 at the moment because there are so many exciting options in midfield, and that extra mid gets extra goal points and clean sheet points.

I'm considering building a team without Zlatan (although he'll be a place holder until Kun returns). Pumping that cash into a killer midfield (Hazard Sanchez Sterling/Mane and Puncheon with Capoue on the bench, for example) and also a huge defence (Baines Walker Shaw Valencia). The idea being that I can play double United defence on plum Man U fixtures to try and rival the zlatan ownership when I feel most vulnerable, with the theory that I back their defence more than I back them to score multiple goals...

If that makes any sense. It's risky and a slightly unconventional spread of funds but I quite like it

Why will everyone be on Deeney over Ighalo in 2 weeks?

However, Burnley (A) Bournemouth (H) Middlesbrough (A) Swansea (A) Hull City (H) - Is very tempting for the Watford forwards.

Punt on Iheanacho for me. Not done anything yet still waiting on the Gray verdict. But Kelechi and Haz in whilst moving on Eriksen makes sense to me. Then I can get rid of Oscar to get Kun back or wildcard.

I think Pep will be more likely to play an overloaded midfield with possibly Sterling/Nolito upfront. According to the paper(s) "Sterling could easily move inside and test the sharpness of Daley Blind and Eric Bailly. Don't forget, Pep loves to pull big surprises in big games."

Fiso's crack the code was one of the earliest (perhaps the earliest) of price prediction websites, has an excellent forum for discussing price change algorithms, and is a good source of information for the latest price and status changes.

Its predictions also used to be very good till a couple of years ago, but fplstatistics is now far better.

Remember that these only give predictions - it is not guaranteed that players beyond the 100% and -100% thresholds will definitely change price, or that players below these thresholds won't.

In general fplstatistics claims over 90% accuracy, but watch out for players who are rising rapidly and getting close to the thresholds.

Also note that transfers made on wildcards do not count towards price changes, so predictions are more difficult when many wildcards are active.

Price drops for players with very low ownership are also very difficult to predict.

Interesting to learn WC don't count towards price changes, one of the reasons I used wildcard was because I thought loads would wildcard and I would benefit from price rises on template team. live and learn I suppose.

Also, FPL's secret price change algorithms tend to change slightly each season, so fplstatistics has to start by assuming the same algorithm as the previous season, and then gradually refine its predictions according to the changes that actually do or don't occur.

Payet could be an amazing differential over the next few gameweeks.

WHU fixtures are good as it gets and I haven't seen him in a single WC team with most opting for Antonio or Lanzini instead.

Seems like people are quick to forget his form last season, and at the Euros, just because he hasn't been fit to start yet.

Yeah Payet could be great, but Hazard and Ozil are very similar in price.

I also think that Antonio, playing in his preferred wing position, might not be a million miles away from Payet's score. And 2.5 is a big saving.

Not transferring Kun out of the team as it was absolute hassle to get him back in last year.

            Heaton
            Bailly Stones Morgan Amat
            Ozil(VC) Lamela Capoue Tadic
            Ibra(C) Llorente

            Bench: Foster,Deulofeu,Olsson & Aguero

Ideally I want rid of Olsson,Tadic,Llorente & possibly Deulofeu 0.5 in the bank who goes first for a -4 hit this GW? Not using my WC till later on in the season & on 4 players either.

            A) Deulofeu > Mirallas
            B) Llorente > Deeney or Ineanacho
            C) Olsson > Mashauku

            WC, considering dropping Ibra...
            A) Antonio/Lamela, Barkley, Rooney
            B) Mane, Bolasie, Rooney
            C) Bolasie, Puncheon/Zaha, Ibra

Keeping him means playing two weaker (5.5-6.5) midfielders alongside Haz and Ozil. Or having a terrible defence. If Mkhitaryan was fit and a starter he could be a good alternative.

If Sanchez worth it. Ozil looked sharper to me. Osu just scored 2 in half an.hour of international. If he is scoring well, he is on form I say. Sanchez got a lucky goal, or lucky lucky finish more precisely, and he got an assist for that penalty.I need to see more of Sanchez. Looked pretty ordinary at end of last year too
