Diego Costa scores twice as Eden Hazard bring home a one-point return. Leroy Fer strengthens his claim as a budget midfielder, whilst Stephen Kingsley seems to have convinced Francesco Guidolin he’s a worthy starter. Here’s the Stock Check following today’s events..

On the Rise

Diego Costa
Whilst Eden Hazard offered us nothing more than a yellow card, Costa maintained his momentum under Antonio Conte by netting both of the Blues’ goals at the Liberty.

Over 362,000 FPL managers turned to Costa as a result of Sergio Aguero’s suspension last week and today’s display means is the only forward to score or assist in all four Gameweeks.

Conte has failed to curb the Spain international’s penchant for falling foul of referees, though – this afternoon’s caution was his third of the season, continuing a run that has seen him booked in every league match that he has scored in this term.

Leroy Fer
Along with Etienne Capoue, the Swansea midfielder continues to bely his budget price tag, with this afternoon’s goal a third in the first four Gameweeks.

Granted, the upcoming fixtures continue to look dire but having scored against Leicester and Chelsea in back-to-back fixtures, Fer seems to have the form to prevail.

Capoue’s cheaper price (4.7 to the Dutchman’s 5.2) and kind set of fixtures from Gameweek 6 suggests he’s likely to remain the favoured fifth midfielder.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
Without a goal or assist in the first three Gameweeks, the Swansea playmaker had dropped to 7.3 ahead of Chelsea’s visit.

Sigurdsson’s spot-kick duties came to the rescue, though, and with a couple of bonus points also in the bag, his season now looks up and running.

Fer may currently be the form option, yet Siggurdsson is established Fantasy royalty and could be one to consider when the fixtures start to improve in Gameweek 9.

Stephen Kingsley
The Scot was expected to drop to the bench to accommodate Neil Taylor’s return but instead retained a role in the first XI thanks to a change in tactics by Francesco Guidolin.

The Swansea manager’s decision to begin with a 3-5-1-1 allowed Kingsley to start for the fourth successive Gameweek, stationed alongside Jordi Amat and Federico Fernandez in a back three, with Taylor utilised as a left wing-back.

Guidolin’s first-half decision to haul off Taylor and bring on Mo Barrow suggests Kingsley may well be ahead in the pecking order.

Regardless, with Southampton, City, Liverpool and Arsenal next, he looks set for a spot on our FPL benches for now.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
Okay, it was his first blank of the season.

Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that if Hazard had delivered yet again today, the bandwagon would have kicked into overdrive.

Although a rare off day will certainly be forgiven by his owners, some would-be suitors may now think twice over bringing in the Belgian right now.

With the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Roberto Firmino and Michail Antonio all bagging double-figure hauls ahead of some great fixtures, Chelsea’s schedule – which sees them face Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester and Man United in the next five Gameweeks – could prove enough of a short-term deterrent.

The Chelsea Defence
Antonio Conte handed new boys David Luiz and Marcos Alonso a place amongst the substitutes, opting instead to keep faith in the defence that produced a clean sheet against Burnley in the previous Gameweek.

Branislav Ivanovic may have collected an assist for Costa’s acrobatic leveler yet the nature of Chelsea’s capitulation indicates their backline is very much a work in progress right now.

Given the aforementioned fixtures, Conte will be desperate to address his rearguard’s shortcomings. With John Terry doubtful for Liverpool’s visit with an ankle problem, the Italian may well consider a reshuffle against Jurgen Klopp’s in-form attack.

Neil Taylor
Hauled off just 40 minutes into his first appearance of the season, the left-back looked none too happy with his manager’s decision as Swansea reverted to a back-four.

Post-match, Guidolin apologised, conceding he should have replaced the Wales international at the break, though the bottom line is that Taylor now seems to have fallen behind the cut-price Kingsley as the Italian’s preferred left-back for now.

    A. Smalling, Cahill, Abel Hernandez

    B. G.Johnson, Ogbonna, Deeney

      Mate...those are both atrocious.

Smalling hasn't played a game yet. Cahill could very well lose his place and has looked far from solid anyways. Hernandez, no. Johnson at 5.0 is poor value compared to PVA/Williams/Stones etc. Ogbonna also hasn't played a game yet. Deeney could be good.

      Leaning more towards Morgan>Holebas based + 0.5

Already have Capoue. Ibra Costa and Gray. Gray could become Ighalo but I'll keep my options open

      1. Lovren an elevator
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

Well yes the fixtures also lean towards getting Holebas although be wary that I still don't rate them defensively and there's a chance Walter may opt for a back 4 meaning Holebas loses his appeal and maybe even his starting place

    2. Postman Ty
      • 11 Years

Ighalo seems to be better from open play, especially last year, but I think this year Deeney could be better value with penalties.

After those fixtures, I'd ship him anyway cos of the Africa cup of nations but those fixtures are delightful and like you said, he's promising in open play. Admittedly there are great options in his price range, looking mainly at tekkers and bony

I'm likely going either Ighalo or Defoe starting GW6. I think how Defoe plays against Everton, and how they both play next week will determine it for me.

It doesn't seem prudent to transfer out Lamela (home to Sunderland) and Redmond (home to Swansea) this week, unless all points sign to Son playing over Lamela again. But with Champions League midweek I'd expect Son to be taking Eriksen's or Alli's spot instead so they can get a break next week against Sunderland.

Thinking this is the most potential front 8

    hazard antonio arsenal liverpool xxx
    aguero ibra xxx

going with ozil/sanchez for arsenal and firmino/mane for liverpool leaves a mere 4.5 for the blank spots which means we may have a 4.5 playing every week. i know capoue has been scoring freely and does that mean he should be utlized as a playing option going forward?

geting cazorla and lallana as the arsenal and pool options is another way to go but just seems to unreliable compared to the other options in the team.

Cheers. Not bothered by that at all tbh. I always try to play the long term game, in terms of planning and building TV for the last 1/3 of the season. Just want to play the guy with the best fixture and form. Away to Pulis may not be ideal, but Antonio is on fire and could do very well.

Don't sweat it, just correct your team slowly. I chased points heavily in my first year and it went badly, last year I tried to hold back and got a bit better.

This year I'm just trying to be even more patient.

Patience is the biggest bit of advice in this game. Be. Patient. And don't panic.

    Jaku or pickford?

For next week? Jaku I guess as they are home.

Long term, probably neither as they are both likely to lose their place. Pickford has the better chance to stay #1 longer I guess.

I am not sure Pickford will now that Mika has been brought in. Sunderland didn't take this all the way to FIFA just to get a number 2 keeper to sit on the bench.

So you are saying jaku is the better one to keep

Hypothetical question: I won't be making an rash decisions based on today's return of 1 point for him, but how long a bad run of games would you sit through with Hazard (assuming he has a bad run)? Last season I kept Aguero for weeks/months hoping he would come good but that is a lot of money to not be producing.

I don't think Chelsea really have a "bad run" of games. Chelsea will still score/ win in the majority of those games and Hazard will still play a big role creating those chances/ scoring goals.

Hmmmm yes, class is permanent. Which is why I will keep him (for the foreseeable future anyway) but Aguero DID have a bad run of games last year and City were still winning and doing well and he is probably the best outfield player in the league. Kane is another example. The same could happen for Hazard. As I said, this is just a hypothetical question to see how long people would keep him for.

i plan on keeping him until the end of the season, unless he gets injured

Agreed. I think he played well today. Got forward and made a few efforts. Just unlucky. I just want to see how long people would keep a large sum of money (in this case Hazard but it could be Aguero from last season) playing for if they weren't producing.

    Benteke or Defoe or Bony?
Bony has the best fixtures but plays for Stoke. Is there any attacking threat from Stoke against Spurs?

Defoe is great player and have already scored 2. Next two GW fixtures is tough, but great fixtures following after.

Benteke scored one this week, but only one attempt on goal. How was Crystal Palace looking in attack?

Firmino to Barkley the dumbest move of the season.

Keep for now and see what happens with Wilson now he has scored. If he makes a habit of it, he may be worth a punt.
