An impressive first-half display was enough to see Liverpool beat Chelsea in their own backyard for a second successive season.

Phillipe Coutinho played his part, eased into the Liverpool starting XI courtesy of Roberto Firmino’s untimely groin tweak; he was back amongst the points. As was Diego Costa, who maintained his relentless early season form without seeing yellow. Here’s the Stock Check following Friday’s action…

On the Rise

Diego Costa
Another goal and no booking, this version of Costa undoubtedly requires serious consideration.

Many recruited the Chelsea man as an understudy for Sergio Aguero until Gameweek 6; he has passed that audition.

Some will surely be pondering their options before clicking the eject button to welcome back the City man. Having returned in each of his five Gameweeks, with five goals so far, they will be considering a downgrade in midfield to retain Costa’s services.

However, the Spaniard will need to demonstrate fixture proof qualities to maintain such form: Arsenal, Leicester City and Manchester United arrive in the next four Gameweeks.

Philippe Coutinho
Having blanked in three Gameweeks since his big haul at Arsenal, the Brazilian returned to the Liverpool line-up and provided a delicious assist for their opener. That was enough to seal him two bonus points.

On a night when Roberto Firmino missed out with a minor injury, Coutinho took his opportunity to strengthen the hold on his 28% Fantasy Premier League ownership.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
Okay, it’s too early to panic but, given the competition for spots and funds in our squads, Hazard can’t afford to embark on a run of blanks.

Three points from his last two rings alarm bells, as does the dip in his vital statistics – Hazard has mustered two goals attempts over these two blanks, compared to 14 from the opening three Gameweeks.

The Chelsea Defence
Liverpool have had a tough opening with four away trips in the first five. However, Antonio Conte’s outfit don’t have that excuse.

The Blues have enjoyed three home matches but have just the shut-out against Burnley to show for it.

With a combined ownership of 39%, Chelsea’s back five are expensive investments and, with the aforementioned tough fixtures to come, future returns appear limited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who the #%&! do we want in our teams from that Liverpool midfield?

Firmino/Mane but even these are risky..
Lallana was all the rage before Chelsea cos seemingly he was the most nailed.

Maybe just avoid and go for a defender to be safe?

Is there any real advantage in holding the WC longer than this/next GW?
I have a big decision to make here.

For me it is either a -4 to bring in Aguero and then hope the likes of Lamela, Ozil, Hazard, Barkley (well I would remove him as part of the -4 prob), Friend, Foster, Stones suddenly hit form or look great options again..
    OR
WC to freshen things up right now.
Some fixtures are turning and my WC team looks pretty good I think.
Time to jump on Watford/WHU/Everton for example before those players start rising and scoring well.

    Current team.
    Foster, Heaton.
    Valencia, Baines, Stones, Friend, Amat.
    Ozil, Hazard, Barkley, Lamela, Hojbjerg.
    Lukaku, Benteke, Ibra.
    0.0m in bank, 1ft.

There is a significant fixture swing around GW11. A wildcard then could be profitable.

City, Leicester, Liverpool (from GW9), Chelsea for example. Meanwhile Arsenal, West Ham, Everton have fixtures turning for the worse.

I have almost the exact same team and dilemma. I am playing my WC this week unless Barkley and Lamella change my mind. I was 100% certain of keeping Hazard, not so sure now. It's still to early to tell which of the big mids will be consistent early on.

Said the same thing last week and he duly justified my tip with a goal this gw.

I think he's a shrewd punt given his price and fixtures.

Besides the lapse in concentration that led to Costa's goal they were very solid defensively last night and Chelsea struggled to carve out any chances, especially in the first half.

I think I'll be bringing him in based on those fixtures alone. Can't go wrong for 4.9mil.

Any ideas how to best get Aguero / Liverpool mid into this?

    Foster (Pickford)
    Valencia - Williams - Evans / Collins / Amat
Hazard - Sanchez - Sterling - Antonio (Capoue)
    Lukaku - Ibrahimovic - Zaza

    0.1 itb, 1x ft

Was initially thinking Haz to Firmino this week, then Sterling/Lukaku to 6ish / Aguero week 8 to avoid hits, keeping Lukaku for good fix and getting Aguero after Spurs.

  9. Giovanni Giorgio

    WC TEAM template 1:

    Heaton Robinson
    Valencia Baines McAuley Amat 4.5
    Antonio Firmino Capoue Snodgrass 8.6
    Lukaku Aguero Ibrahimovic

Looking at Cazorla. That leaves me with 0.9 itb to upgrade elsewhere.

What do you think? Bit front heavy?

I am fully aware of their fixtures mate. The thing is, the harder the fixtures the better they perform. At least thats my impression of Liverpool.

I have to agree with Sondre.

The only time you should really double up in the same position is if you know almost 100% that both players are going to return points consistently each game. An example that I last remember clearly was SAS (Sturridge and Saurez).

It could work, but at the moment it looks like Liverpool are going to share the points in midfield, and it's too soon to know if they're capable of each consistently returning points week in and week out.

Of course you also run the risk of a double blank from one match if neither fire in a match.

With all the options available I don't think a double up is necessary, but I wouldn't knock it entirely if you want to take the punt.

Personally I'd prefer to spread the risk.

            • 14 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

I get what you're saying but the thing is both Mane and Firmino are both explosive players, so either can get a double digit haul any week. Might be worth the risk with those fixtures.

Fair play. If your confident then follow your gut. At least then you know the buck starts and stops on the back of your decision alone. 😉

I hope it works out for you as I'll have one of those players myself. 🙂

It's the players around him that's the problem.

He is one of the best players I have ever seen play in that position, especially last season.

Don't forget his at a new club so it takes time to settle. Can't judge him based on one or two poor matches.

      • 11 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

You just don't understand the position if you think he's poor. Today wasn't a good game, but his stats for interceptions and clearances are very good. He runs around and keeps the defence out of trouble from open play, although our defence has been gifting goals lately. He isn't in the team to shoot, he shouldn't be shooting, and he's not an Ozil passer either, not his job.

Hard to get rid of Lukaku with the form he is in and the fixtures Everton have. So A for me.

The team to concede most penalties last year was Norwich with 10 pens conceded. Behind them were West_Ham, Watford and Sunderland with 8.

Add to that Mike Dean reffing the Sunderlang-Spurs game this week. Kane(c) 😎

For only 10 points (tripled)... got about as lucky as he could be and still a disappointing result. The chips help the casuals have fun.

"With a combined ownership of 39%"

You can't just add ownership percentages like that. It doesn't make sense. If every person in the game owned all 5 of the backline, would you say "With a combined ownership of 500%"???

Your point is absolutely correct. Do you have any Chelsea defenders? Probably not. Chill 🙂
