A Stamford Bridge firesale, a lack of belief in Zlatan and Nacer Chadli reaching hero status. Gameweek 5 has delivered some unexpected lessons…

Hazard owners are unforgiving…
The sudden evacuation of Eden Hazard from FPL squads is somewhat shocking.

The Belgian has been evicted by almost 140,000 managers at the time of writing, already leading to a pair of price drops in the space of 48 hours.

A number of factors have conspired against him.

Etienne Capoue’s seemingly relentless campaign to break Fantasy Football has ensured that Hazard can be earmarked as a makeweight to allow for the return of Sergio Aguero.

The form of Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling have also offered obvious straight swap options.

To be fair, Hazard has brought this on himself; with just three points and two shots on goal in his last pair of Premier League outings, there are clearly warning signs of a slump. After last season’s malaise, there’s every right to be concerned.

Chelsea’s fixtures offer little respite. Hazard must emerge from this dry spell and prove his fixture proof status if he is to stem the tide of transfer traffic from looking elsewhere.

We’re none the wiser on Arsenal’s penalties….
Arsene Wenger seems as non-plussed as us on just why Alexis Sanchez took and missed Arsenal’s first-half penalty at Hull City.

Santi Cazorla’s owners were left forlorn and empty-handed following Saturday’s contest – although rely on a constant stream of penalties to keep up with Sanchez and Mesut Ozil’s scoring is somewhat optimistic.

As it is, Sanchez didn’t need the penalty. He was awarded a fortunate opener but blasted a convincing second to underline that he is undoubtedly the crown jewel ahead of Arsenal’s obliging run of opponents.

Some Hazard sales have doubtless been sparked by Sanchez’ form, although with City’s assets demanding attention, the Chilean looks destined to remain a powerful differential over the coming Gameweeks.

Slimani can be a factor…
Just not quite yet.

At 8.5 and with an enviable strike record, playing in a team served by Riyad Mahrez, you would have thought that we’d be able to find room for Islam Slimani.

But with Aguero’s return and Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa firing, his rank in the pecking order is diminished. The Foxes punishing fixtures are also a factor.

Nonetheless, Saturday’s pair of headers made their mark and Slimani’s relationship with Mahrez and Jamie Vardy sparked enough to give us hope that he could eventually present an effective alternative.

We can’t get enough City cover…
Aguero seems a given, but there’s clearly a strong case to go well beyond that.

Pep Guardiola’s side appear to be at a different level in terms of fluidity and goal threat and, in Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling, have two obvious assets that demand consideration.

Sterling is obviously the easiest to accommodate given his price point – the 8.4 seems ridiculously kind in the light of his underlying numbers.

Yes, we have some concerns about his consistency and pitch time but, here and now, it’s difficult to question his form and points output.

Nolito’s ban can only appears to increase his potential minutes over the next two and with Pep handed the League Cup to appease Leroy Sane, we can surely expect the Sterling starts to roll on.

…but Pep’s back four remains a minefield…
With Vincent Kompany back on the bench and John Stones rested, it’s now clear that Guardiola’s entire back four is in question.

Stones could still warrant the outlay given his price tag, although week to week worries over his start will be tough to bear given City’s current inconsistency at the back – Saturday was their first clean sheet of the campaign.

Chadli is an unlikely hero…
But a hero he shall be if he can single-handedly inject a goal threat into West Brom’s attack.

Saturday’s events indicated the Belgian is capable of achieving just that, not only by providing goals and assists himself but also by reviving the fortunes of Salomon Rondon as a budget option.

Fantasy managers will not be complaining.

We need the likes of Chadli and Rondon to help us fund big name signings and if the Baggies defence have goals to protect and rumble forward for more corners won, that’s all gravy.

Alarm bells are ringing at the London Stadium…
Michail Antonio is serving us just fine but, around him, there appears to be chaos in the West Ham ranks.

Slaven Bilic is suddenly clinging to his job.

Bereft of ideas, solutions and options to stop the flow of goals going in their net, the fear is that the Croatian will react by shutting down the Hammers attack and dragging Antonio back to defensive duties.

They’re also imminent at Old Trafford…
That Manchester derby setback appears to have rattled Jose Mourinho.

Two matches and two defeats later, United suddenly seem to be well over the initial honeymoon and are squabbling and searching for inspiration.

Sunday’s reverse at Watford revealed a worrying lack of organisation and flair, reminiscent of the dark days under Louis van Gaal.

Such a scenario arrives just as we put Zlatan Ibrahimovic under the microscope.

Even goalscoring legends are at risk in the current Fantasy landscape and an edgy and moody Zlatan may just fail to keep pace with the rich array of talents currently pulling up trees elsewhere.

Only Hazard and Alvaro Negredo have been sold more than Ibrahimovic so far heading into Gameweek 6.

It’s all falling for Lukaku…
He may have applied a touch, but Lukaku’s “strike” in the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough will still go down as a phantom goal according to those without him in their squads.

Typically perhaps, fortune favoured Lukaku, and he kept his tally ticking.

A total of 29 points over Aguero’s two-Gameweek absence is a compelling argument to retain the Belgian.

Everton’s fixtures and the momentum under Ronald Koeman another.

With Luakaku claiming Saturday’s “goal”, you have to wonder if he’ll also bully penalties from Leighton Baines. In Koeman’s words post-match, Everton need their goalscorer scoring.

If that’s the case, it could be the factor that unlocks a legitimate Golden Boot chase and convinces more to trade from Ibrahimovic.

Dann’s threat has us questioning our principles…
We’re never likely to back the Crystal Palace defence for clean sheets but, in Scott Dann, they appear to offer a freakish Fantasy option.

Over the season, the 5.5 centre back has averaged two goal attempts per match – all from inside the box.

That’s currently surpassing the efforts of new signing Christian Benteke, who somehow emerged from a 4-1 win over Stoke City without points to his name.

Such is the emphasis on set-pieces from Palace, Dann seems almost guaranteed to get regular goalscoring opportunities.

With this season’s law change making it more difficult to shackle attackers at set-plays, you have to wonder if Dann will go on delivering and force us to shelve the basic principles of selecting defensive assets as we go in search of an unlikely source of goals.

Kane blow could see us go Dutch…
Just as Harry Kane was hinting that he might have thrown off his sluggish form, an ankle injury threatens to banish him to the sidelines.

The full prognosis is not yet known but if ligament damage is confirmed and a term of absence with it, our radars would suddenly blink with the Vincent Janssen option.

The Dutchman has a lot to prove and is yet to fire but playing in a Spurs side that creates 31 efforts on goal yesterday might just present him as a new value proposition.

Pickford is going nowhere fast….
At first, we were unsure on Jordan Pickford’s start. Now we couldn’t be more certain.

The 22-year-old’s display at White Hart Lane kept the scoreline at a more than respectable level and underlined the 4.0 stoppers’ potential as a…ahem…season keeper.

Vito Manonne may well recover in three months but will surely face an uphill struggle to displace Pickford should he maintain his current level of performance.

With two save points returned in every match so far, there’s an argument building for Pickford to come off our benches.

Time for UTB's now regular Monday run down of Boro's assets!

Firstly to say, Everton are not our rivals this season - they were a league apart once they equalised, however from our perpsective we kind of already knew that so we were hoping to really just take some positives from the game - or at least learn something new an maybe try to sneak a point. I'll highlight a few of those points in player profile form:

Valdes - Typical of a lot of Spanish keepers not used to the Premier League, he looks to be really struggling with crosses at the moment...and I can't believe how small he is. I'm sure he used to look huge on the TV.

Barragan - Arguably our best player again. The only defensive asset I would be interested in right now and I dare say, the safest defensive option right now.

Friend - George, we have a problem. There was always a question mark about whether he would step up and we thought that would be from an attacking point of view rather defensive, but it appears not. He's being targeted week in week out now and is very much above the radar. Despite an assist, he is becoming a bit of a problem that Karanka may need to address. If I had him I would be monitoring it very closely - particularly once Fabio is back (Barragan to LB and Chambers in at RB is also an option).

Gibson/Ayala - Once again Gibson did his job well (possibly could have done more for Lukaku's goal) and on more than one occasion saved Ayala's bacon. Just back from injury Ayala though and usually takes a few games to get back to his best. He needs to improve though with Chambers sniffing about.

De Roon/Forshaw - Neat and tidy, but ultimately overran by a far more experienced midfield. It looks like the midfield of choice for the time being, though Clayton could come in for Forshaw against the better teams for a more defensive approach.

Nsue- I called it a few weeks back that he might become an OOP option, and so it proved. However it's not an option I would be recommending because he was terrible. In for the injured Stuani, who for the record, would have made absolutely no difference at all.

Downing - Solid again, but having to do a fair bit of defensive work to help Friend out, so not really a fantasy option right now.

Ramirez - hounded out of the game again away from home, despite starting well. In fairness, I just think that was Everton stepping up once they scored more than it being his fault. Still nailed on but will score all of his points at home.

Negredo - Same as Ramirez, we just couldnt really match Everton so was isolated for much of the game.

The subs Fischer, Nugent and Clayton didn't really have much impact/time. Nugent seems to be ahead of Rhodes in terms of Karanka's trust but remains not good enough - doesn't say much for Rhodes does it?

Overall, not to disapointed becasue Everton are a cut above us, and a lot of other teams this season, but it's true that one or two of our players are struggling a bit - Friend, Clayton, Ayala, Valdes and the right hand side of attack is all a bit of a problem.

I'd recommend staying away from Boro to be honest until the dust has settled on the above players. Players like Bernardo Espinosa, Callum Chambers, Adama Traore and Viktor Fischer could all be seeing more game time soon.

Barragan looks the best bet in the short term, but again the fixtures aren't great. I can see Chambers being involved sooner rather than later.

    Ibra v Sanchez

From most of the wildcard teams and RMTs I've seen they either have Sanchez or Ibra. That seems to be the key decision many are making as having Ibra makes having Lukaku and Aguero difficult and having Sanchez makes it tricky to justify Ibra and Aguero, with so many good 8-9m midfielders around.

Which do you prefer? Ibra or Sanchez?

And has anyone plan to have both from GWK 6 - if so please share your teams -be good to see how it's done.

Quick pros and cons of Ibra

Pros - Two home games - second one is against Stoke when he looks a good captaincy shout. No striker has had more goal attempts over the last two. He is the only credible ManU attacking option.

Cons - ManUnited look poor at the moment. Ibra looks in fine form, the rest of his side doesn't. Plus Leic could be tricky

Quick pros and cons of Sanchez

Pros - Good GWK 7 fixture when he looks a good captaincy shout. He is on form, and so is the rest of his team. Possibly now on penalties.

Con - tough GWK 6 fixture. Pricey - has to compete with KDB to be a credible option.

I go Ibra. Doesn't have any competition and is nailed as n°9 spot. He is on pens. He does not blank much and is involed in many of his team's attack. He is a central piece unlike Sanchez who is very frustrating by alternating Hauls and Blanks.

Indeed. But Sanchez and Ibra are both great options in GWK 7. Aguero, KDB and Lukaku also great.

Its more that most wildcard teams seem to come down to a choice between these two as many have decided that both is not possible/doable/desirable/affordable.

Won't be on penalties. Wenger even said so in his interview that he did not understand why Sanchez took it as they have an agreed pecking order that has Cazorla down as the main one for spot kick duties.

Both can be done if you're happy to go without Lukaku and Sterling or Firmino

So standard midfield is something like - Firmino - Sterling - Antonio - Capoue - Cheap or Sanchez

With Ibra and Sanchez it looks something like:

      Firmino - Antonio - Capoue - Snodgrass - Sanchez

      Aguero - Ibra - 7.6m~

I'm on wildcard and looking at Ibra+Snodgrass for GW6+7 and then do a swap to Sanchez+7.6m or less striker. That gives me Ibra for next 2 weeks (including Stoke) when Sanchez has Chelsea (h) and Burnley (a) - could be a quiet one in both.

Not sure about planning 2 transfers just after wildcard though.

Don't think Sanchez will be on pens either. Straight back to Cazorla.

No doubt in my mind, Sanchez over Ibra.
Better individual form, better team form, plays OOP as a striker whilst getting midfielder points, good captaincy choice and most of all much better upcoming fixtures compared to Ibra.
KdB point is completely negated by Sterling's form and price.
Why is it even a discussion?

Prefer Sanchez. I wasn't keen on keeping him, but for fixtures, value to Arsenal's attack and possible pens (althought that would be a bonus, not expecting it), he seems the only Arsenal attacker worth owning. City and Pool have multiple options, Arsenal do not, imo

Yes keeping Ibra and Sanchez with Lukaku / Kun.

Only way I can do it is upgrade Tekkers to Kun and downgrade Hazard to a 4.6.

      - If I go for Ibra, it will be Snodgrass, Chadli or Bolasie.

My Aguero transfers boiled down to having Ibra/Bolasie or Lukaku/Sanchez. Went for the latter. I had Ibra from the start and swore by his class and potential of Utd in general. That's not looking so good now. Got to follow form premiums and Ibra used up too much money.

I think Sanchez is the better option, even though I highly doubt he'll take another penalty any time soon. Sanchez has the edge because Arsenal will score more goals overall so there's a bigger chance of him getting points and bonus.

Ibra is still potent, but with their form faltering Mourinho may want to go back to basics, set up a solid team and grind out 1-0 wins. Ibra's biggest advantage over Sanchez is that he does not have international duty, so you don't need to nervously wait for that teamsheet after the international break.

I've been looking at something like this to fit both in:

      Foster / Pickford
      McAuley Amat 4.5 4.5 4.5
      Snodgrass Capoue Chadli Sanchez Sterling
      Lukaku Aguero Ibra

It leaves me with a very average defense, I could potentially just get some 4.0 bench fodder (Love) and bring in Williams.

Although I am probably more likely to take Firmino and Antonio for Chadli Sanchez.

I'm in the camp of keeping Ibra he's just too dangerous because of his ownership compared to Sanchez

I have both but thinking of switching out of Sanchez for GW 6 because of the Chelsea game (although is that hard now?) Definitely want Ibra for GW7 vs Stoke. WC'ing and have Sterling - Alexis - Antonio - Snoddy/Capoue and Ibra - Kun - RASHFORD! (This enables me to have some decent defenders).

Make no mistake, after GW7 Ibra is gone for me. If Kane is fit I may even put him in for Ibra GW6, upgrade a midfielder and then switch to Ibra for one week vs Stoke and back again. But am I the only one thinking Rashford is now a starter? Even if on the wing he's clearly dangerous and maybe cheap? Will he end up diluting Ibra?

I always trust Arsenal to score +2 goals, I'm not seeing that of Utd right now. Plus, I wouldn't be able to rest easy without Alexis as you KNOW a double digit score is coming if not this week then next. Is that true of Ibra? I'm yet to see it.

I already have Alexis and I've just done two free transfers from Hazard/Ibra to Firminho/Aguero. I appreciate the risk involved but looking at fixtures and seeing Hazard v Swansea & Liverpool, I'm relaxed.

I also intend to take a punt on Rashford for GW7

      Jonty, two questions?

1.) Why does it have to be Ibra or Sanchez? Some will have all 3.

2.) You're known for being quite dull, do you not think it's a bit wild to consider losing a 60% owned player that will be captained by loads? What will your mindset be when Aguero is away to Spurs and Ibra is home to Stoke? Lukaku is home to Palace who beat them last year so that's not that great a fixture.

I am on wildcard and am sticking with Ibra. Ibra is on pens, no way Sanchez is on pens after the weekend, Sanchez has champions league and a trip to South America coming up soon so he could easily be rested for a game or 2, Ibra is 100% nailed.

I actually have both in my team, which will be as follow from GW6 (wildcarded GW4) :
      Mandanda / Pickford
      Baines/Evans/McAuley/Amat/Kingsley
      Sanchez/Sterling/Antonio/Capoue/Barry
      Ibra/Aguero/Lukaku
Risking Capoue as 4th mid and going cheap in defence allows going bigger up front.
Downside could be if defense becomes a must have or Capoue gets injured or in a really bad run...
      Hoppefully won't happen...
Other question I ask myself is : is it worth having 3-4 captain options every week and not spreading the money a bit more...

I have both and Ibra and Lukaku.. I had a pretty balanced team until yesterday but I did Hazard - Marney and Valencia - Kingsley so that I could afford Hernandez - Aguero... I had to do it before Agueros price rose last night, now my team looks like:

        Foster

        Evans - Coleman - Stones

        Antonio - Sanchez - Capoue - Sterling

        Kun - Ibra - Lukaku

        Bench: Marney, Kingsley, Amat

I've sacrificed some strength in depth for Aguero and I might live to regret it since I was in 70k position before taking an 8 point hit last night to do this but I really think we have to be aggressive this season. My plan is after 2-3 weeks to drop either Ibra or Sanchez, depending on fixtures and form and to use the money to upgrade Marney and Kingsley to decent options. I just want to try this for 2-3 weeks and see where I am then.

I have gone with Sanchez and sacrificed Ibra. I think Ibra will be the better point scorer, but I see far more value in Lukaku as a second striker than the cheaper midfield options that could replace Sanchez (especially as I already have Firmino). So it was simply a question of balance and chasing the value... but it could well prove to be a huge mistake!

Following the excellent Boro post a few pages back, just thought I'd post some thoughts about Watford as people are actually interested in more than just our strikers for once. *Longer than I thought it would be*

Gomes - excellent keeper but .5 too expensive. Brilliant save from Ibrahimovic and was confident in the air

Britos/Cathcart/Prodl - all played well, especially Prodl (although his position in the middle of the three could be retaken by Kaboul), dominated Ibra in the air. CBs potentially more at risk to quicker strikers, although Britos can shift.

Janmaat - superb going forward before his shoulder injury, which didn't look too bad as lots of people were hugging him after the game! Sent in a few very dangerous crosses, and obviously got the assist. Shaw played well, but still got caught out a few times, and considering Janmaat has the most assists of any defender during his two years in England, he could be a huge point scorer.

Holebas - my pick of the defence for his price, all set piece duties and rampaging runs. Kenedy is still a threat (more so than Zuniga imo, who will be used as a injection of energy late in the game as yesterday). The five at the back often changes to a four to allow one of Janmaat/Holebas to advance even further than normal (Cathcart played RB for periods in the second half yesterday, mainly because Amrabat is more of a winger). With our threat in the air, Holebas' set pieces could prove huge. I'd get him at 5.0 let alone 4.5.

Behrami - infinitely better than Watson, obviously not a fantasy option though. Made Pogba look Sunday League.

Capoue - what else can I say? Beautiful player to watch and has deservedly been rewarded with goals and points. Won't keep up his Ronaldo-like record but working in a 3 gives him much more space, as does the threat of the marauding wingbacks - cutbacks could be a theme of the season. Will continue to get chances and shots, since the fluid nature of the team, which shifts numbers in defence and attack, makes him and Pereyra difficult to mark. I don't own him but I have no idea why.

Pereyra - our best player. Fairly quiet yesterday, but played a nice pass for the 2nd goal. Points in all his games so far, and should flourish against the weaker teams if he is allowed a bit more space. Often plays the quarterback role, moving behind and in front of Capoue. Only player who can really play an incisive through ball, so potentially more of an assister than a scorer. Unlikely those with Capoue would want a midfield double up, but certainly a good option.

Ighalo - worked very hard, often on the wing. Missed a huge chance, and hasn't been the player in 2016 that he was the year before. That said, this team will create chances for him, and I'd back him to outscore Deeney. Will come off for Success a lot.

Deeney - absolutely terrified Smalling and Bailly, which is surprising since I'm sure Smalling only came in because of his physicality compared to Blind. A mammoth performance from a colossal player (literally, as still seems a little fat), threatened with a couple of headers but not too much else before the penalty. More chances will fall to Ighalo.

      Subs:

Amrabat - came in at RWB/RM and looked threatening. Classified as mid though.

Zuniga - moaned when he came on as he looked sh*t for Napoli. I'm so sorry Juan! As important as he was, he came on in midfield, and I don't expect him to threaten any mids, or Holebas/Janmaat unless there's an injury.

Success - this guy is unbelievable. If Ighalo gets injured he's going straight in my team - OOP, incredibly direct, fast, strong, nightmare to defend against (Bailly got rekt). Will continue to be an impact sub though.

tl;dr - Holebas, Capoue, Ighalo are my picks (though I have Deeney), Man United are sh*t

Cheers. Noticed in the members area that Ighalo looks better than Deeney, but you would still pick the former despite Deeney having pens and being 0.4m cheaper?

Hopefully Holebas keeps his place and stops the yellows, he looks amazing for attacking potential

I picked Deeney because of budget issues. He scored 7 pens last year which is loads, unlikely he'll get as many this year. It's a tough call but I think Ighalo will grab more goals, he just needs a little more confidence. Unlike last year, this is an attacking side, however - both are good options.

Holebas loves a YC and playing as WB means he's probably likely to continue picking them up. Hopefully he'll be getting too many goals/assists to worry about that though 🙂

This is a fair point. Considering the fixtures, I don't think it's criminal that we've conceded a few goals. Having said that you're completely right, the shifts in formation create space at both ends. Remains to be seen if we can defend properly against the weaker sides, although the defence looked very solid yesterday.

    38. Clean Sheets In Short Supply
      Judas
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 2 months ago

As clean sheets this season seem to be in short supply, I did some digging to see if this is just an illusion or if BPL defences this season really are struggling more than usual.

I had a look back at the amount of clean sheets kept at this stage of the season in the previous 4 Premier League campaigns in order to compare them to the amount of clean sheets kept so far this season.

      2012/2013: 27
      2013/2014: 38
      2014/2015: 29
      2015/2016: 33

      This season: 20

So in conclusion, BPL defences at this early stage of the season are taking MUCH longer to settle than they have in previous years. Obviously many other factors could contribute to this such as changes in tactics and attacking play. But if you are on your Wilcard, it might be advisable to not spend big in your defence. However perhaps in coming weeks we will see a massive increase in clean sheets across the league?

Going off my own research I think that although you are right but you are not completly

I picked 3 teams last year which I though had the best defence early on a picked three this year which I think are the best.

This year top 3 : 6 clean sheets

Last years top 3 :7 clean sheets

        Conclusion

Although I think the small teams aren't doing as well I'd argue the bigger defenders are and in fact the smart this would be to spend more in defence.

Yeah it's definitely worth taking a punt with £4.5s who, although unlikely to keep clean sheets, might offer attacking returns (Friend, Holebas, Kone). I'm on my WC and will have Walker + a mix of cheap punts. Pochetino's defence is always a good investment.

I don't really agree. If you consider 4.5m to be the minimum you're spending on 3 or 4 of your defenders, then surely the extra 1m for the likes of Walker, Baines or Valencia over the 4.5m options such as Friend is worth more points than 1m might be elsewhere in your team? Spurs and Everton both look sound defensively, and I expect a lot of cleanies from United and Arsenal once they settle down. The above 3 are what I started with and I don't plan on shifting them with my wildcard.

I have baines + coleman and everton still have 3 good fix in the next 4.

Started out with shaw + valencia, getting 2 (x 2) cs in 3 gw, sold shaw and brought in baines + coleman, getting 1 (x2) cs + 1 goal in 2 gw.

Looking to get in fuchs+kos, i think the 5.5 defenders will do well when you play them around the good fixtures (higher CS potential) and odd goal/assist/bonus.

Backs up my brief look at points distribution for the various positions when thinking about my wildcard this week.

Defenders are way down, only Walker getting anywhere near mid/attack.

In fact I decided 3-5-2 was the way to go on this basis.

Klopp confirmed on Friday it was a last minute decision to not play Firmino. He was in the team until very late on. Klopp confirms today that Firmino could've played.

100%. People who say keep him will be owners and people who say ditch will be non owners (never owned). I have been an owner since GW2 and I say he is easily replaceable with Costa and even Lukaku but I dont like him. Spend the change on a better 4th mid than Capoo/Snodgrass.

Took the plunge on a WC:

            Jaku Foster
            Walker Coleman Holebas Smith Kingsley
            Sanchez Sterling Firmino Capoue Puncheon
            Kun Lukaku Deeney

            0.6 ITB

I had Antonio, Lovren and Williams instead of Puncheon, Walker and Coleman... Think this is better?

              TEAM ATM:

              SUBS: Heaton--Puncheon--Love--Amat
              2FT--2.6ITB

Ibra is a must? I could take out him+Benteke > Kun+Deeney. Take a hit to afford Hazard > KdB/Sterling(no Liverpool coverage) and left about 1.3-3.6ITB.
My original plan was Benteke+Hazard to Kun+Lallana(no hit, left 0.1TB).
