A Baggies attacker, a consistent Everton and a volatile market that’s showing the door to a goalscoring legend. We say goodbye to Gameweek 5 with a tale of the unexpected…

The Player

Immediately filed under “promising, must monitor”, Nacer Chadli was always going to be an interesting option once he’d made the move to West Brom.

An erratic Fantasy asset while at White Hart Lane, the Belgian nonetheless demonstrated the ability to spark to life in the box, raiding for goals and suddenly turning a forgettable average six out of ten performance, into a match-winning display.

That wasn’t the case in Gameweek 5.

On Saturday, the Baggies record signing carried the game to West Ham from the kick-off; Chadli single-handedly transformed West Brom from a ponderous, impotent attacking force to a team that bristled with threat.

His two goals and two assists have immediately brought him to the attention of the masses but, distracted by leading lights elsewhere, he’s yet to register the transfer interest Saturday’s points tally deserves.

We still have reservations. It’s still difficult to trust West Brom’s potential to score goals: we can hardly make a judgement based on a single performance against a beleaguered Hammers defence.

But with penalty duties unexpectedly tucked away in his locker, Chadli is clearly alive and back in the game.

Another handy mid-price candidate to call upon once West Brom’s schedule softens.

The Team

Five Gameweeks in and Everton’s recognition as a Fantasy force is already long overdue.

While Everton barely had to break into their third gear to see off Middlesbrough, it’s clear that they have become a very different proposition under Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman has revived their Fantasy assets.

We’ve already dwelt on the appeal of Romelu Lukaku.

While we remain wary of a player that has teased us for so long, his displays and output thus far have given us every reason to believe that we will see him make another stride towards genuine heavy-hitter status. A true challenge for the Golden Boot is on – 25 goals perhaps a realistic target.

But the supporting cast also warrants attention.

At the back, Seamus Coleman’s fine opener against ‘Boro was his reminder of his six-goal season back in 2013/14.

While we’re willing Leighton Baines to rediscover his returns from bygone years, Coleman has the legs on the left-back and could yet emerge as the stronger option.

Then we add Ashley Williams – a statistical monster who can potentially offer an even cheaper route into covering Everton’s new level of resilience.

In midfield, Koeman has added Yannick Bolasie on the right and appears to be investing faith in Kevin Mirallas on the opposite flank.

Both have the talent to provide us with mid-price options – particularly for those who still baulk at the concept of Ross Barkley following Lukaku’s lead in shaking off his frustrating inconsistencies.

The Talking Point

The mighty really are falling.

Eden Hazard’s price has tumbled 0.2 in the space of 48 hours with thousands of owners panicked at his meagre returns with Manchester City’s midfield assets sparkling.

Three points over his last two Gameweeks, plus an alarming decline in his underlying numbers, has provided the catalyst for what some would describe as a knee jerk reaction.

Last season’s decline will have also spooked some – we’ve seen how severely Hazard can regress; three encouraging Gameweeks has clearly not been enough to win back our trust.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is close to mirroring Hazard’s sudden collapse.

Triggered by Manchester United’s current malaise and Sergio Aguero’s return, Ibrahimovic is being mercilessly shown the door at pace, despite returning a goal or an assist in four of his five Gameweeks.

It fits the profile of the season discussed in last week’s ScoutCast.

The transfer activity of the last ten days is typical of a campaign that will see heavy-hitters frequently slide in and out of favour.

Last season we sat on the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Dele Alli because they provided such value: we were wary of selling them and absorbing a big cash loss and, given their price and a lack of alternatives, we could afford to sit tight.

With big funds tied up in both Hazard and Ibrahimovic, this is not the case. FPL managers will feel compelled to act quickly, driven by a market where every 0.1 counts.

The money tied up in failing heavy-hitters can be used to carry out significant surgery, or to move to the next big name edging into form and rising in price. There’s been a constant supply of those so far.

Regardless of the trend, many will sit still, discounting toughening fixtures for both Hazard and Ibrahimovic, backing them to punish the fickle amongst us.

It remains to be seen who will win out. But one thing is certain: the short-lived shelf life of the big hitters is already making for a fascinating season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

No but there will be a new release "Finding Mou a job" if he does not keep his rants to the dressing room. Has he learnt nothing. I think his own ego is eating him at this stage.

This. If it's the same as every other season, and there's no evidence yet to suspect otherwise, Hazard has finished dropping for week. But this is the first test I believe of whether that rule is still in place this year.

I would not worry about Capoue as 4th mid. You team is still solid enough when fixtures are taken into account. Problem may come finding suitable replacement for fixtures down the line. If you want the big 3 you can't do much better than what you have.

Kingsley will be dropped for Taylor. Stones is on shaky ground. So I'd rethink the defense a bit.

You don't have much to work with if you are committed to that front eight, so you might have to go with some combination of Evans/Kone/A. Smith/ to replace Stones and Kingsley.

If it were me, I'd seriously consider downgrading Costa to Deeney. It would allow you to improve multiple defenders.

I wouldn't worry about Capoue as 4th, Watford look on a good run - personally I would maybe consider Lukaku over Costa (what I have) to free up bit of funds and fixtures are fantastic.

And there must be better than Stones out there considering current state of City defence/CS record, especially if chance he rotation risk. Leciester defence, or even Dann or West Brom defender.

it doesn't matter. while social media has lead to more exposure for 'punts' and options, this idea of a template still exists among a minority of the overall FPL universe.

I don't think there's really a clear template atm coz there are many good shouts for goalscoring mids & Kun can be partnered by any 2 up front

Why is template bad? Template basically is the team that everyone kind of agrees is the best at the current time based on form with not too many risks. I pretty much have a template team with 3 puntier options

Yellow cards etc are included in these games and not those. Games in Europe are by themselves. Game could be cancelled tonight meaning suspended for weekend hence the red flag. May as well not included those games so he would be suspended for weekend anyway then.

For me its pretty certain. Redmond could have easily had a goal and assist last gw. His playing striker against a team thats conceded 8 in 2 games.

If i had to pick one it would clearly be redmond. I know capoue is the top goalscorer and may be the mahrez of this year, but cant deny redmond as a top pick for this gw

So with Everton losing to Norwich last night, maybe their defense isn't as solid as people first thought.

Well for starters Jagielka and Baines didn't play, but I don't think people were really that excited about how good their defence is, more so their fixtures and the reemergence of Baines as an attacking option and Williams the (former) baps machine.

For context, my current wc team is:

    GK: Pickford, Jakupovic
DEF: Clyne, Holebas, Glen Johnson, Adam Smith, Kingsley
MID: De Bruyne, Firmino, Iwobi, Payet, _______
    ATT: Aguero, Lukaku, _______

Currently on a WC, which of the following two combinations look best:
    -- Son & 4.5m Striker
    -- Ighalo & 4.5m midfielder

    -- Goalkeepers provide good rotation.
-- Defence is admittedly weak, however there are a few positives. All of my options are attacking full backs with good fixtures and they rotate well amongst each other.
-- Midfield looks strong when checking the underlying stats, I understand Iwobi is a risk, but its one I'm willing to take having watched the hull game.
    -- Attack is rather template...

Thank you for reading, thoughts would be highly appreciated, especially if like me, you have also activated your WC.

Mate, will be honest there is alot there i would change
GK- this may work out or both may lose places soon. No one knows. Get a heaton/Foster in there
Def- Clyne, no no no. Nor Stoke
Mid- KDB is nice but with Kun as well? not for me. Antnio over Payet. Is Iwobi ok for starts? Son will be rotated.
FW- if no Ibra go Aguero, Luk and Deney

        Thanks for your advice Joggers.

Johnson & Clyne both have a very good run of fixtures and both love to get forward, that much is evident on paper.

        With regards to:
De Bruyne, keeping 0.5 in the bank, to upgrade to Sanchez the following week depending on their performances.
Payet, his underlying statistics are in my opinion better than Antonio's.
Iwobi, this admittedly is a risk, but surely his last performance merits a start, he was the best player on the park.
Son, once again, not nailed to start, his underlying stats however are very impressive.

      Upgrade the two keepers
Defense - Clyne > Lovren and upgrade Johnson
      Midfield - Payet > Antonio.
Not sure about Iwobi. You could downgrade KDB > Sterling and then upgrade Iwobi.
I'd get Snodgrass as another midfielder.
Striker - Deeney is a good shout

This is what it is coming down to with my WC. So stuck

Sanchez: Good fixtures, form, explosive, captain material. Other options: Ozil/Cazorla(pens) or Hazard (out of form)

Ibra: Scores when he wants, potential to punish you if you go without him with his high ownership, captain material and the only Man U player worth considering. Other options: Costa (form, cards, low BAPS) Lukaku, Aguero.

KDB: The best player of the three, maybe will play deeper with Silva coming back, slightly cheaper than Sanchez, fixture proof with City's amazing football. Other options: Silva, Hazard.

Also have said before Ozil is being overlooked massively this season where value is so important. I'm tearing my f**king hair out right now

New to the game. Why do people consider hits as such a negative? If the player you bring in scores 4 more points than the one you sold, you're doing alright I guess?
For example : I know that Collins won't score more than 2 this game week, and with 2 ITB, I can pretty much get any defender I want who has good next 4-5 fixtures?

    1. Albrightondknight
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 10 Years

If you look at 4-5 fixtures fine. The one week logic for a defender goes costs 4 you would have got 2 anyway even with a cleansheet for 6 no net gain. If conceding even 1 it is really a loss of 4. Therefore logic goes never a hit for a defender.

      1. Sanchit
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Cheers. But then hits are okay to consider attacking changes?
I have Benteke and could change him to Costa/Deeney/Ighalo/Slimani

Valid point. I think the logic is that attackers are more likely to score highly if you get it right, does not mean they won't blank and score 1 or 2 though. Never gets a mention. But you are correct then it is the same as a defender.
I punted on Benteke not worked so far. Fixtures were good but will turn soon. I like Rashford as a replacement if he plays next week for GW8 against Stoke. All your options are nice too.

      I dont.
Like you said, if getting off a dropped/ injured player then all good.
Though do look at the next 3-5 weeks of fixtures rather than each week in isolation imo

It requires patience for that kind of hit to pay off. Hits for defenders usually don't go well. Even if the guy you let go gets only two, and the guy you picked up gets a shutout (but no bonus), it's a wash.

Then there is the unexpected injury that comes up, and the player that's now in form that you want to pick up, and before you know it you're racking up hits left and right.

Anyone got any stats to back up the "KDB does not do as well / plays deeper with Kun in the team" argument. Are Nacho and Kun that different in style of play? Really want to do Sterling to KDB as I don't trust Sterling medium term maybe not even short term.

    1. Sanchit
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

I think that KDB's role isn't changed much with Aguero in the team. Rather, It's about Silva. When Silva and KDB play together in midfield, sometimes Silva will go up and KDB will stay, sometimes vice versa but when KDB is paired with Gundogan, KDB is the one who goes up everytime and Gundogan stays back everytime.

The United game was different because KDB played a false 9 after 60 minutes.
