A wasteful Dele Alli maintains his scoring form, Mesut Ozil wins the plaudits but blanks again, while injuries to Ryan Bertrand and Darren Fletcher cause early Gameweek 8 concerns. Here are the notes from Saturday’s international tussles…

Alli Nets Again

England found a way past the Maltese bus at Wembley, with Spurs midfielder Dele Alli (8.2) scoring the second goal.

The Spurs man could, and should, have had more, but his strike confirmed his blossoming form – you just wouldn’t know it from his Fantasy Premier League ownership.

Alli has scored a solid 24 points over the last four Gameweeks and yet he has consistently suffered sales. Having started the season as part of 415,753 FPL squads, Alli is now found in just over half of that figure, although he looks to have enjoyed a small gain in ownership heading into next weekend’s fixtures – the first Gameweek where he has shown an increase this season.

This trend is undoubtedly attributed to the popularity of team-mate Heung Min-Son (7.6), who has seen a big surge in his ownership (141,900 transfers in this week alone) on the back of four goals and two assists from his last four starts up front.

Spurs’ remain in the thick of the international action, and with a UEFA Champions League fixture looming, Mauricio Pochettino would not have been overly pleased to see Danny Rose (5.9) playing such a full part at Wembley.

He came on for the injured Ryan Bertrand (5.4), whose hamstring issue has already ruled him out of the Slovenia clash.

Rose has himself only just returned from a spell on the sidelines and Pochettino must now be pondering his rotation options in the light of his international minutes.

The 5.3% of FPL managers who own Rose will be hoping that he gets the nod for the trips to West Brom and Bournemouth, rather than the Champions League fixture at Bayer Leverkusen.

Bertrand Concern for Saints

Bertrand’s hamstring injury will be a major worry for Claude Puel with the club confirming that their left-back will now return to the south-coast for an assessment.

Should Bertrand face a spell on the sidelines, Puel will likely turn to Matt Targett as his replacement, although he was also nursing a minor injury which saw him miss out for England U21’s and remain with the club over this break.

Targett started the first three Premier League matches and would be of interest to FPL managers given his 4.4 price tag.

The Saints have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league heading into their Gameweek 8 home encounter with Burnley – they’ve kept six successive shut-outs in all competitions.

Ozil sparkles but draws a blank

Things seemed to be looking up for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (9.5) when he was initially credited with an assist in Germany’s 3-0 win over the Czech Republic.

It soon transpired that he had in fact missed helping on the pass that led to the German opener – par for the course for a man who had 19 assists last season but has none in six league matches this campaign.

Two goals have sugared the pill for the 7.4%-owned midfielder, but his premium price is surely testing the patience of his FPL owners.

Ozil’s performance against the Czechs garnered high praise, but he could do with improved returns to back up his undoubted influence.

Domestic matches at home to Swansea City and Middlesbrough and a trip to Sunderland have a last chance saloon feel to them, with Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott continuing to offer more explosive potential in the Gunners’ camp.

McArthur on target as Fletcher pulls up

Scotland’s last-gasp draw at home to Lithuania confirmed the unlikely goalscoring form of Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur (4.9).

His late, late header was his third goal in four matches. Throw in an assist as part of an impressive 12-point haul in the 3-2 win at Sunderland and it is perhaps unsurprising that McArthur has enjoyed a mini-surge in his FPL popularity – he gained more than 28,000 owners heading into Gameweek 7.

As one budget midfield option grows in strength, another suffers a potential blow.

McArthur’s introduction came as a result of Darren Fletcher’s (4.4) withdrawal at half-time. He suffered a first-half thigh injury and is now a major doubt ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Slovakia.

That’s bad news for the well-owned West Brom veteran, who is found in 9.6% of FPL squads.

Tony Pulis will also be hugely concerned given the forthcoming schedule awaiting his side.

The Baggies face Spurs and Man City at home, along with tough trips to Liverpool and Leicester City over their next four Gameweeks.

An absence for the influential Fletcher would surely have some bearing on their chances in those matches – Fletcher has made more successful passes in the opponents’ half than any other Baggies player.

Out of Africa

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane (9.0) continued his fine start to the season going with an assist for Senegal’s opening goal in the 2-0 win over Cape Verde Islands.

The 15.0%-owned midfielder has three goals and an assist from six league starts and, once Gameweek 8’s home match with Manchester United is done, enjoy a superb run of fixtures all the way through to New Year’s Eve.

Hull City also have a prolonged run of attractive matches to come – their next stern test appears to be Spurs away in Gameweek 16 – so striker Dieumerci Mbokani’s (5.5) brace for DR Congo in a 4-0 win over Libya will have done his prospects no harm.

Mbokani made his first start for the Tigers in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea and, depending on his fatigue levels, he will be in line to retain his start for the trip to Bournemouth next weekend.

    Williams Valencia Collins (Pieters Amat)
    Antonio Sterling Lallana Sanchez (Fletcher)
    Lukaku Feeney Aguero

I have one FT and was planning on using it on my defence (Valencia to Vert). But I know have three injuries to lukaku, sterling and lallana. So I'm not sure who my priority is to get rid now.

A superb article! Both informative and enjoyable to read.

I'm on a WC and it has reaffirmed my likely decision to get at least 2 liverpool as well as the link to the previous one which supports my call of avoiding the 'Deeney train' and going 3-5-2.

To that end, I would really appreciate yours (and the general community) opinion on my WC draft:

      Grant, Pickford
Mustafi, Stones, Pieters (all good fixtures) Cameron (or any 4.4) Amet
      Coutinho, Firminho, Snodgrass, Walcott, Sanchez
Aggy, Costa (easy lukaku switch if booked etc.) Diamente (bench)

      Any advice much appreciated!!

      Current dilemmas:

      1. Get Son in? Who for if so?
      2. Snodgrass for Son is doable but means super uber defence
      3. From the article - do I need Clyne? Is 3 liv too many?
      4. Any other comments would be very welcome

I'm c.80points behind in my mini league so need to get going!

      Thanks in advance

        Thanks a lot mate

If you can do Snodgrass to Son, I'd definitely do it. Son's price will continue to rise I think as his form will probably continue and so I'd be itching to get him in before I get priced out of him.

I have a Coutinho and Firmino double-up and have had it for some time. Has served me well and I'd really encourage in.

Clyne is on my watchlist and could replace A Valencia for me (who is my only premium defender). Attacking potential is huge so could be worth a punt. Undecided on that one though atm.

        Thanks again

Damn I wish I had picked Liverpool now. Was hoping I could perform well for saints then get bought during transfer window.

This is very disappointing. But on other note, FUT is awesome and I highly recommend it.

            1. Jay_
              9 years, 10 months ago

Only other option is to create a pro and play as him in career mode. You can create and edit him to look like yourself and train him up to increase attributes, I had no heart in this though because after all the hours I'd wasted on Hunter, it was a sickener starting from the beginning again with myself, could really feel the difference in lack of pace and shooting accuracy. Plus I'm not sure if you can get sold. Thanks for the FUT heads up I will give it a go, when you do complete the journey I had unlocked quite a few FUT rewards but I can't remember what they were, so that could be helpful for you later in the game.

How do you choose between Defoe or Deeney for the next few weeks?

    Defoe:
+ Main goal threat for Sunderland
+ Involved in 4 out of 6 goals scored (67%)
    + On Penalties
+ Very likely to get BAPS when he scores
    - Sunderland score very few goals (6 in 7 games)
    - No assist potential as such

    Deeney:
+ Plays for a more attacking team
    + On Penalties
+ Decent assist potential (9 assists last season)
    + Better fixtures short term
    - Involved in only 4 out of 12 goals scored (25%)
    - Goals & BAPS shared around at Watford

Struggling to decide, but leaning towards Deeney.

    Appreciate your responses.

I'd like to see it. It would give teams like San Marino etc something to aim for. Qualifying for the next qualifying round would be a major achievement and at least possible.

Hi guys! 1.0 ITB, already -4 this GW.

    Pickford - Heaton
    Valencia - Baines - McAuley - Amat - Smith
    Sanchez - Firmino - Sterling - Snod - Cap
    Kun - Luk - Deeney

I know my defence must be improved, but would you do it for a hit? At the same time i think Baines and valencia will grow valuable soon, especially if baines still have pens. Also tempted by Son, but at the same time i don't fancy sacrificing Snod with those fixtures. So..

    A) Valencia -> Kos
    B) Valencia -> Walker
    C) Valencia, Snod -> Holebas, Son
    D) Patience, dear friend. Upgrade Valencia using FT next GW.

    Good advice needed, thank you!

Will not act before after internationals unless i decide on the Son/holebas alternative and if Son moves closer to a rice that i can't afford.

      Hmmm.

My playing style is always to save FT's where possible/avoid hits.

Mids are fine, leave them alone.

I wouldn't take another -4 to fix defence, but if ever there was a week to do it, VALENCIA --> Koscielny this week when they have Swansea, could be it.

      Personally, I'd stick at -4

Thanx! I will hold steady for now, maybe valencia-> Kos in a last minute transfer.

    1 FT.
    Bank: 0.0.

    Heaton
    Walker - Stones - Holebas
    Lamela - Sanchez - Coutinho - Sterling
    Rashford - Aguero - Lukaku
Subs: Foster, Höjbjerg, Amat and Collins.

Will take me from Sterling and get Son. For Lamela to get another. What do you all mean? Can you help me.

    Any views?......

    Pickford Heaton
    Valencia williams Evans holebas amat
    Sanchez firmino Antonio snoddy capoue
    Kun ibra deeney

Think your midfield and forward line are nicely set for the next gamesweek barring injuries. One or two changes to defense could be what's needed but no hits required.

Dear all, can I seek help and opinions here if I should take out Sanchez for Firmino as I foresee Sanchez might not play a full game?

This might be an additional -4 for me this week.
